ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Melinda Gates - Philanthropist
Melinda French Gates is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she puts into practice the idea that every life has equal value.

Why you should listen

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. As co-chair, Melinda French Gates helps shape and approve strategies, review results, advocate for foundation issues and set the overall direction. In developing countries, the foundation focuses on improving people's health with vaccines and other life-saving tools and giving them a chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to dramatically improve education so that all young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.

In recent years, Melinda French Gates has become a vocal advocate for access to contraception, advancing the idea that empowering women to decide whether and when to have children can have transformational effects on societies. In 2012, Gates spearheaded the London Summit on Family Planning, with the goal of delivering contraceptives to 120 million women in developing countries by 2020. When asked why she got involved in this issue, Gates said, "We knew that 210 million women were saying they wanted access to the contraceptives we have here in the United States and we weren't providing them because of political controversy in our country. To me, that was just a crime. I kept looking around trying to find the person to get this back on the global stage. I realized I just had to do it."

My first tripयात्रा in Indiaभारत, I was in a person'sव्यक्ति की home

where they had dirtगंदगी floorsमंजिलों, no runningदौड़ना waterपानी,

17

00:58
So in shortकम, I'm startledचौंका by all the things
18
43000
3000
01:01
that they don't have.

01:04
But I am surprisedआश्चर्य चकित by one thing that they do have:

how is it that they can get Cokeकोक

why can't governmentsसरकारों and NGOsगैर सरकारी संगठनों do the sameवही thing?
33

And I'm not the first personव्यक्ति to askपूछना this questionप्रश्न.

Coke'sकोक के successसफलता is relevantप्रासंगिक,
52
131000
2000
02:28
because if we can analyzeविश्लेषण it, learnसीखना from it,
53
133000

then we can saveबचाना livesरहता है.
54

02:33
So that's why I tookलिया a bitबिट of time to studyअध्ययन Cokeकोक.
55
138000
3000
02:37
And I think there are really threeतीन things
56
142000
2000
02:39
we can take away from Coca-Colaकोका कोला.
57
144000
2000
02:41
They take real-timeरियल टाइम dataजानकारी

02:43
and immediatelyहाथोंहाथ feedचारा it back into the productउत्पाद.
59
148000
3000
02:46
They tapनल टोटी into localस्थानीय entrepreneurialउद्यमी talentप्रतिभा,

and they do incredibleअविश्वसनीय marketingविपणन.
61
154000
3000
02:52
So let's startप्रारंभ with the dataजानकारी.
62
157000
3000
02:55
Now Cokeकोक has a very clearस्पष्ट bottomतल lineलाइन --
63
160000
2000
02:57
they reportरिपोर्ट to a setसेट of shareholdersशेयरधारकों, they have to turnमोड़ a profitफायदा.
64
162000
3000
03:00
So they take the data
65
165000
2000
03:02
and they use it to measureमाप progressप्रगति.
66
167000
2000
03:04
They have this very continuousनिरंतर feedbackप्रतिक्रिया loopपाश.
67
169000
2000
03:06
They learnसीखना something, they put it back into the productउत्पाद,
68
171000
2000
03:08
they put it back into the marketबाजार.
69
173000
2000
03:10
They have a wholeपूरा का पूरा teamटीम calledबुलाया "Knowledgeज्ञान and Insightअंतर्दृष्टि."
70
175000

03:12
It's a lot like other consumerउपभोक्ता companiesकंपनियों.
71
177000
2000
03:14
So if you're runningदौड़ना Namibiaनामीबिया for Coca-Colaकोका कोला,
72
179000
2000
03:16
and you have a 107 constituenciesक्षेत्र,
73
181000
2000
03:18
you know where everyप्रत्येक can versusबनाम bottleबोतल
74

3000
03:21

75
186000

03:23

a supermarketसुपरमार्केट or a pushcartpushcart.
77
190000
2000
03:27
So if salesबिक्री startप्रारंभ to dropड्रॉप,
78
192000
2000
03:29
then the personव्यक्ति can identifyकी पहचान the problemमुसीबत

10:51
You startप्रारंभ to talk to them about why openखुला defecationशौच

11:37
this is a roomकक्ष fullपूर्ण of youngयुवा menपुरुषों

12:20
we can changeपरिवर्तन communitiesसमुदायों
283
725000

12:22
and we can changeपरिवर्तन wholeपूरा का पूरा nationsराष्ट्र का.
284
727000
3000
12:26
Well, why is all of this so important
285
731000
3000
12:29
So let's talk about what happensहो जाता when this all comesआता हे togetherसाथ में,
286
734000
3000
12:32
when you tieटाई the threeतीन things togetherसाथ में.
287
737000
2000
12:34
And polioपोलियो, I think, is one of the mostअधिकांश powerfulशक्तिशाली examplesउदाहरण.
288
739000
3000
12:38
We'veहमने seenदेखा a 99 percentप्रतिशत reductionकमी in polioपोलियो in 20 yearsवर्षों.
289
743000
4000
12:42
So if you look back to 1988,
290
747000
2000
12:44
there are about 350,000 casesमामलों of polioपोलियो
291
749000
3000

12:49
In 2009, we're down to 1,600 cases
293
754000
3000
12:52
Well how did that happenहोना?
294
757000
3000
12:55
Let's look at a countryदेश like Indiaभारत.
295
760000
2000
12:57
They have over a billionएक अरब people in this countryदेश,
296
762000
3000
13:00
but they have 35,000 localस्थानीय doctorsडॉक्टरों
297
765000
3000

13:08
They have two and a halfआधा millionदस लाख vaccinatorsvaccinators.
300
773000
3000
13:12
But let me make the storyकहानी a little bitबिट more concreteठोस for you.
301
777000
2000
13:14
Let me tell you the storyकहानी of Shriramश्रीराम,
302
779000
2000
13:16
an 18 monthमहीना boyलड़का in Biharबिहार,
303
781000

13:18
a northernउत्तरी stateराज्य in Indiaभारत.
304
783000
2000
13:20
This yearसाल on Augustअगस्त 8thवें, he feltमहसूस किया paralysisपक्षाघात
305
785000
3000
13:23
and on the 13thवें, his parentsमाता-पिता tookलिया him to the doctorचिकित्सक.
306
788000
3000
13:27
On Augustअगस्त 14thवें and 15thवें, they tookलिया a stoolमल sampleनमूना,
307
792000
2000
13:29
and by the 25thवें of Augustअगस्त,
308
794000
2000
13:31
it was confirmedकी पुष्टि he had Typeप्रकार 1 polioपोलियो.
309
796000
3000
13:34
By Augustअगस्त 30thवें, a geneticआनुवंशिक testपरीक्षण was doneकिया हुआ,
310
799000
3000
13:37
and we knewजानता था what strainतनाव of polioपोलियो Shriramश्रीराम had.
311
802000
3000
13:40
Now it could have come from one of two places
312
805000
2000
13:42
It could have come from Nepalनेपाल, just to the northउत्तर, acrossभर में the borderसीमा,
313
807000
3000
13:45
or from Jharkhandझारखंड, a stateराज्य just to the southदक्षिण.
314
810000
3000
13:48
Luckilyसौभाग्य, the geneticआनुवंशिक testingपरिक्षण provedसाबित
315
813000
3000
13:51
that, in factतथ्य, this strandकतरा cameआ गया northउत्तर,
316
816000
2000
13:53
because, had it come from the southदक्षिण,
317
818000
2000
13:55
it would have had a much widerव्यापक impactप्रभाव in termsमामले of transmissionहस्तांतरण.
318
820000
2000
13:57
So manyअनेक more people would have been affectedलग जाना.
319
822000
2000
13:59
So what's the endgame
320
824000
2000
14:01
Well on Septemberसितम्बर 4thवें, there was a hugeविशाल mop-upसफाई campaignअभियान,
321
826000
3000
14:04
whichकौन कौन से is what you do in polioपोलियो.
322
829000
2000
14:06
They wentचला गया out and where Shriramश्रीराम livesरहता है,
323
831000
2000
14:08
they vaccinatedटीका two millionदस लाख people.
324
833000
2000
14:10
So in lessकम से than a monthमहीना,
325
835000
2000
14:12
we wentचला गया from one caseमामला of paralysisपक्षाघात
326
837000
2000
14:14
to a targetedलक्षित vaccinationटीका programकार्यक्रम.
327
839000
3000
14:17
And I'm happyखुश to say only one other personव्यक्ति in that areaक्षेत्र got polioपोलियो.
328
842000
3000
14:20
That's how you keep
329
845000
2000
14:22
a hugeविशाल outbreakप्रकोप from spreadingप्रसार,
330
847000
2000
14:24
and it showsदिखाता है what can happenहोना
331
849000
2000
14:26
when localस्थानीय people have the dataजानकारी in theirजो अपने handsहाथ;
332
851000
3000
जब स्थानीय लोगों के हाथ में आंकड़े आते हैं;
14:29
they can saveबचाना livesरहता है.
333
854000
3000
14:32
Now one of the challengesचुनौतियों in polioपोलियो, still, is marketingविपणन,
334
857000
3000
14:35
but it mightपराक्रम not be what you think.
335
860000
2000
14:37
It's not the marketingविपणन on the groundभूमि.
336
862000
2000
14:39
It's not tellingकह रही the parentsमाता-पिता,
337
864000
2000
14:41
"If you see paralysisपक्षाघात, take your childबच्चा to the doctorचिकित्सक
338
866000
2000
14:43
or get your childबच्चा vaccinatedटीका."
339
868000
2000
14:45
We have a problemमुसीबत with marketingविपणन in the donorदाता communityसमुदाय.
340
870000
3000
14:48
The G8 nationsराष्ट्र का have been incrediblyअविश्वसनीय रूप से generousउदार on polioपोलियो
341
873000
2000
14:50
over the last 20 yearsवर्षों,
342
875000
2000
14:52
but we're startingशुरुआत में to have something calledबुलाया polioपोलियो fatigueथकान
343
877000
3000
14:55
and that is that the donorदाता nationsराष्ट्र का
344
880000
2000
14:57
aren'tनहीं कर रहे हैं willingतैयार to fundनिधि polioपोलियो any longerलंबे समय तक.
345
882000
2000
14:59
So by nextआगामी summerगर्मी, we're sightedदेखा to runरन out of moneyपैसे on polioपोलियो.
346
884000
3000
15:02
So we are 99 percent
347
887000
3000
15:05
of the way there on this goalलक्ष्य
348
890000
2000
15:07
and we're about to runरन shortकम of moneyपैसे.
349
892000
3000
15:10
And I think that if the marketingविपणन were more aspirationalआकांक्षा,
350
895000
3000
15:13
if we could focusफोकस as a communityसमुदाय
351
898000
2000
15:15
on how farदूर we'veहमने come
352
900000
2000
15:17
and how amazingगजब का it would be
353
902000
2000
15:19
to eradicateउन्मूलन this diseaseरोग,
354
904000
2000
15:21
we could put polioपोलियो fatigueथकान
355
906000
2000
15:23
and polioपोलियो behindपीछे us.
356
908000
2000
15:25
And if we could do that,
357
910000
2000
15:27
we could stop vaccinatingटीका लगाने everybodyहर, worldwideदुनिया भर,
358
912000
2000
15:29
in all of our countriesदेशों for polioपोलियो.
359
914000
3000
15:32
And it would only be the secondदूसरा diseaseरोग ever
360
917000
2000
15:34
wipedनष्ट off the faceचेहरा of the planetग्रह.
361

15:37
And we are so close
362
922000
2000
15:39
And this victoryजीत is so possibleमुमकिन.
363
924000

15:43
So if Coke'sकोक के marketersविपणक cameआ गया to me
