ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Stephen Wolfram - Scientist, inventor
Stephen Wolfram is the creator of Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha, the author of A New Kind of Science, and the founder and CEO of Wolfram Research.

Why you should listen

Stephen Wolfram published his first scientific paper at the age of 15, and received his PhD in theoretical physics from Caltech by the age of 20. Having started to use computers in 1973, Wolfram rapidly became a leader in the emerging field of scientific computing.

In 1981 Wolfram became the youngest recipient of a MacArthur Prize Fellowship. He then set out on an ambitious new direction in science aimed at understanding the origins of complexity in nature. Wolfram's first key idea was to use computer experiments to study the behavior of simple computer programs known as cellular automata. This allowed him to make a series of startling discoveries about the origins of complexity.

Wolfram founded the first research center and the first journal in the field, Complex Systems, and began the development of Mathematica. Wolfram Research soon became a world leader in the software industry -- widely recognized for excellence in both technology and business.

Following the release of Mathematica Version 2 in 1991, Wolfram began to divide his time between Mathematica development and scientific research. Building on his work from the mid-1980s, and now with Mathematica as a tool, Wolfram made a rapid succession of major new discoveries, which he described in his book, A New Kind of Science.

Building on Mathematica, A New Kind of Science, and the success of Wolfram Research, Wolfram recently launched Wolfram|Alpha -- an ambitious, long-term project to make as much of the world's knowledge as possible computable, and accessible to everyone.

Well, I have to admit認める, actually実際に,
28

01:26
that I alsoまた、 had a very selfish利己的 reason理由 for building建物 MathematicaMathematica:
29

3000
01:29
I wanted to use it myself
30
74000
2000
01:31
a bitビット like Galileoガリレオ got to use his telescope望遠鏡
31
76000
2000
01:35
But I wanted to look not at the astronomical天文学的 universe宇宙,
33
80000
3000
01:38
but at the computational計算上の universe宇宙.
34
83000
3000
01:41
So we normally通常は think of programsプログラム as beingであること
35
86000
2000
01:43
complicated複雑な things that we buildビルドする
36
88000
2000
01:45
for very specific特定 purposes目的.
37
90000
2000
01:47
But what about the spaceスペース of all possible可能 programsプログラム?
38
92000
3000
01:50
Here'sここにいる a representation表現 of a really simple単純 programプログラム.
39
95000
3000
01:53
So, if we run走る this programプログラム,
40
98000
2000
01:55
this is what we get.
41
100000
2000
01:57
Very simple単純.
42
102000
2000
01:59
So let's try changing変化 the ruleルール
43
104000
2000
02:01
for this programプログラム a little bitビット.
44
106000
2000
02:03
Now we get another別の result結果,
45
108000
2000
02:05
still very simple単純.
46
110000
2000
02:07
Try changing変化 it again.
47
112000
3000
02:10
You get something a little bitビット more complicated複雑な.
48
115000
2000
02:12
But if we keep runningランニング this for a while,
49
117000
2000
02:14
we find out that althoughただし、 the patternパターン we get is very intricate複雑な,
50
119000
3000
02:17
it has a very regular定期的 structure構造.
51
122000
3000
02:20
So the question質問 is: Can anything elseelse happen起こる?
52
125000
3000
02:23
Well, we can do a little experiment実験.
53
128000
2000
02:25
Let's just do a little mathematical数学 experiment実験, try and find out.
54
130000
3000
02:29
Let's just run走る all possible可能 programsプログラム
55
134000
3000
02:32
of the particular特に typeタイプ that we're looking at.
56
137000
2000
02:36
You can see a lot of diversity多様性 in the behavior動作 here.
58
141000
2000
02:38
Most最も of them do very simple単純 things,
59
143000
2000
02:40
but if you look along一緒に all these different異なる picturesピクチャー,
60
145000
2000
02:42
at ruleルール number 30,
61
147000
2000
02:44
you start開始 to see something interesting面白い going on.
62
149000
2000
02:46
So let's take a closerクローザー look
63
151000
2000
02:48
at ruleルール number 30 here.
64
153000
2000
02:50
So here it is.
65
155000
2000
これです
02:52
We're just following以下 this very simple単純 ruleルール at the bottom here,
66
157000

02:55
but we're getting取得 all this amazing素晴らしい stuffもの.
67
160000
2000
02:57
It's not at all what we're used to,
68
162000

02:59

03:04
And, in fact事実, to understandわかる it,
71
169000

03:06
I eventually最終的に had to create作成する

03:31
Well, I think we've私たちは found見つけた its secret秘密:
82

03:34
It's just samplingサンプリング what's out there in the computational計算上の universe宇宙
83

03:37
and quiteかなり oftenしばしば getting取得 things like Ruleルール 30

06:05
Let's do
145
350000
2000
06:07
some mathyマシー thing,
146
352000
3000
06:10
and with luck it'llそれはよ work out the answer回答
147
355000
3000
06:13
and try and tell us some interesting面白い things
148
358000
2000
06:15
things about related関連する math数学.
149
360000
2000
06:17
We could ask尋ねる it something about the realリアル world世界.
150
362000
3000
06:20
Let's say -- I don't know --
151
365000
2000
06:22
what's the GDPGDP of Spainスペイン?
152
367000
3000
06:25
And it should be ableできる to tell us that.
153
370000

06:27
Now we could compute計算する something related関連する to this,
154
372000

06:29
let's say ... the GDPGDP of Spainスペイン

06:31

2000
Microsoft
06:37
(Laughter
159
382000

06:39
The ideaアイディア is that we can just typeタイプ this in,

161
386000

06:44
So let's try asking尋ねる a question質問,
162
389000
2000
06:46
like a health健康 related関連する question質問.
163
391000

06:48
So let's say we have a lab研究室 finding所見 that ...
164
393000
3000
06:51
you know, we have an LDLLDL levelレベル of 140

07:05
Or let's try asking尋ねる about, I don't know,
171

Here'sここにいる something where we're sortソート of

But it's something that is very precise正確 stuffもの.
271
657000

that causes原因 MathematicaMathematica to know what to do here.
273
663000

11:21
Then on the other handハンド, we have WolframWolfram Alphaアルファ,

With WolframWolfram Alphaアルファ inside内部 MathematicaMathematica,
279
678000

Let's try this here.
286
696000

11:56
is that it really gives与える one the chanceチャンス

14:05
Well, so, that leadsリード to kind種類 of an ultimate究極 question質問:
339
830000
3000
14:08
Could it be that someplaceどこか out there in the computational計算上の universe宇宙
340
833000
3000
14:11
we mightかもしれない find our physical物理的 universe宇宙?
341
836000
3000
14:14
Perhapsおそらく there's even some quiteかなり simple単純 ruleルール,
342
839000
2000
14:16
some simple単純 programプログラム for our universe宇宙.
343
841000
3000
14:19
Well, the history歴史 of physics物理 would have us believe
344
844000
2000
14:21
that the ruleルール for the universe宇宙 must必須 be prettyかなり complicated複雑な.
345
846000
3000
14:24
But in the computational計算上の universe宇宙,
346
849000
2000
14:26
we've私たちは now seen見た how rulesルール that are incredibly信じられないほど simple単純
347
851000
3000
14:29
can produce作物 incredibly信じられないほど richリッチ and complex複合体 behavior動作.
348
854000
3000
14:32
So could that be what's going on with our whole全体 universe宇宙?
349
857000
3000
14:36
If the rulesルール for the universe宇宙 are simple単純,
350
861000
2000
14:38
it's kind種類 of inevitable必然的 that they have to be
351
863000
2000
14:40
very abstract抽象 and very low低い levelレベル;
352
865000
2000
14:44
the levelレベル of spaceスペース or time,
354
869000

14:46
whichどの makes作る it hardハード to represent代表する things.
355
871000
2000
14:48
But in at least少なくとも a large classクラス of cases症例,
356
873000
2000
14:50
one can think of the universe宇宙 as beingであること
357
875000
2000
14:52
like some kind種類 of networkネットワーク,
358
877000
2000
14:54
whichどの, when it gets取得 big大きい enough十分な,
359
879000
2000
14:58
in much the same同じ way as having持つ lots of molecules分子
361
883000
2000
15:00
can behave行動する like a continuous連続 fluid流体.
362
885000
2000
15:02
Well, then the universe宇宙 has to evolve進化する by applying申請中
363
887000
3000
15:05
little rulesルール that progressively徐々に update更新 this networkネットワーク.
364
890000
3000
15:08
And each possible可能 ruleルール, in a senseセンス,

369

15:21
Some of these are hopeless絶望的な universes宇宙,

375
917000

15:35
is that you actually実際に don't have to go very far遠い
376
920000

15:37

that aren'tない obviously明らかに not our universe宇宙.
379
926000
3000
15:44
Here'sここにいる the problem問題:
380
929000

問題は
15:46
Any serious深刻な candidate候補者 for our universe宇宙
381
931000
3000

16:15
So, will we find the whole全体 of physics物理?
391

16:17
I don't know for sure,
