ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ueli Gegenschatz - Aerialist
Ueli Gegenschatz took flight just about every way a human can: paragliding, skydiving, BASE jumping (from the Eiffel Tower), and most breathtakingly: by donning a wingsuit and soaring.

Why you should listen

Ueli Gegenschatz was known for his expert paragliding, skydiving and BASE jumping -- and his utterly jawdropping flight in a wingsuit, a high-tech flying-squirrel-inspired getup that let him soar as close as humanly possible to our shared dream of flight. His "addiction to speed" continues to inspire.

A member of the Swiss national paragliding team for four years, Gegenschatz co-founded the Red Bull acro team in 1995. His BASE jumping stunts are the stuff of YouTube legend: the Eiffel Tower; Petronas Towers in KL; the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks all in one day.

Ueli Gegenschatz's extreme wingsuit-sprongen

Filmed:

3000
Van freeflying ging ik naar skysurfing.
01:29
SkysurfingSkysurfing is skydivingparachutespringen with a boardboord on the feetvoeten.
26
71000
4000
01:33
You can imaginestel je voor with this biggroot surfaceoppervlak

01:36
of a skysurfingskysurfing boardboord,
28
78000
2000
van een skysurfplank,
01:38
there is a lot of forcedwingen, a lot of powermacht.
29
80000
3000
01:41
Of courseCursus I can use this powermacht
30
83000
2000
Natuurlijk kan ik deze kracht gebruiken
01:43
for examplevoorbeeld for niceleuk spinningspinnen -- we call it "helicopterhelikopter movesmoves."
31
85000
6000
01:49
From there I wentgegaan on to wingsuitWingsuit flyingvliegend.
32
91000
4000
Daarna begon ik met wingsuit-vliegen.
01:53
WingsuitWingsuit flyingvliegend is a suitpak,
33
95000
2000
Een wingsuit is een pak,
01:55
that I can make flyvlieg, just only with my bodylichaam.
34
97000
3000
01:58
If I put some tensionspanning on my bodylichaam, tensionspanning on my suitpak,
35
100000
4000
02:02
I can make it flyvlieg. And as you see
36
104000
2000
kan ik het laten vliegen. Zoals je ziet
02:04
the fallvallen ratetarief is much much slowertragere
37
106000
3000
is de valratio veel langzamer
02:07
because of the biggergroter surfaceoppervlak.
38
109000
3000
vanwege het grote oppervlak.
02:10
With a propergoede bodylichaam positionpositie I'm ablein staat to really moveverhuizing forwardvooruit
39
112000
5000
02:15
to gainkrijgen quiteheel some distanceafstand.
40
117000
2000
en een behoorlijk eind af te leggen.
02:17
This is a jumpspringen I did in RioRio dede JaneiroJaneiro.
41

4000
02:21
You can see the CopacabanaCopacabana on the left-handlinkerhand sidekant.
42

4000
02:25
From there with all the skillsvaardigheden and knowledgekennis
43
127000
2000
Daarna, met alle vaardigheden en kennis
02:27
from paraglidingparagliding and all the differentverschillend disciplinesdisciplines
44
129000
3000
van parapente en de verschillende disciplines
02:30
in skydivingparachutespringen, I wentgegaan on to BASEBASE jumpingjumping.
45
132000
3000
in skydiving, begon ik met BASE-jumping.
02:33
BASEBASE jumpingjumping is skydivingparachutespringen from fixedvast objectsvoorwerpen,
46
135000
3000
BASE-jumping is skydiving van vaste objecten,
02:36
like buildingsgebouwen, antennaeantennes, bridgesbruggen and earthaarde --
47
138000
6000
zoals gebouwen, antennes, bruggen en de aarde --
02:42
meaningbetekenis mountainsbergen, cliffskliffen.
48
144000
3000
d.w.z. bergen en kliffen.
02:45
It's for sure -- for me -- it's the ultimateultiem feelinggevoel
49
147000
3000
Het is -- voor mij -- het ultieme gevoel
02:48
of beingwezen in freegratis fallvallen,
50
150000
4000
van een vrije val,
02:52
with all the visualzichtbaar referencesreferenties.
51
154000
3000
met alle rituele referenties.
02:55
So my goaldoel soonspoedig was to discoverontdekken newnieuwe placesplaatsen
52
157000
3000
02:58
that nobodyniemand had jumpedsprong before.
53
160000
3000
waar nog niemand gesprongen had.
03:01
So in summerzomer 2000 I was the first to BASEBASE jumpspringen
54
163000
2000
03:03
the EigerEiger NorthNoord FaceGezicht in SwitzerlandZwitserland.
55
165000
2000
03:05
Two yearsjaar after this, I was the first to BASEBASE jumpspringen from MatterhornMatterhorn,
56
167000
4000
03:09
a very famousberoemd mountainberg- that probablywaarschijnlijk
57
171000
4000
een erg beroemde berg, die waarschijnlijk
03:13
everybodyiedereen knowsweet in here.
58
175000
2000
iedereen hier kent.
03:15
2005 I did a BASEBASE jumpspringen from the EigerEiger, from the MonkMonnik and from the JungfrauJungfrau,
59
177000
6000
03:21
threedrie very famousberoemd mountainsbergen in SwitzerlandZwitserland.
60
183000
3000
drie erg beroemde bergen in Zwitserland.
03:24
The specialspeciaal thing on these threedrie jumpssprongen were,
61
186000
3000
Het bijzondere van deze drie sprongen was,
03:27
I hikedgewandeld them all and climbedbeklommen them all in only one day.
62
189000
5000
03:32
In 2008 I jumpedsprong the EiffelEiffel TowerToren in ParisParijs.
63
194000
6000
03:38
(LaughterGelach)
64
200000
3000
(Gelach)
03:41
So with all this knowledgekennis, I alsoook
65
203000
4000
Met al deze kennis wilde ik
03:45
wanted to get into stuntsStunts.
66
207000
4000
ook stunts gaan doen.
03:49
So with some friendsvrienden we startedbegonnen to do differentverschillend trickstrucs,
67
211000
3000
Dus met enkele vrienden gingen we stunts uithalen,
03:52
like for examplevoorbeeld this jumpspringen here,
68
214000
2000
zoals deze sprong hier,
03:54
I jumpedsprong from a paragliderParaglider.
69
216000
2000
waar ik van een parapente sprong.
03:56
Or here -- everybodyiedereen was freezingbevriezing, prettymooi much, exceptbehalve me,
70
218000
6000
04:02
because it was very coldkoude in AustriaOostenrijk
71
224000
2000
want het was erg koud in Oostenrijk
04:04
where we did this filmingfilmen.
72
226000
2000
toen we dit filmden.
04:06
EverybodyIedereen sittingzittend in a basketmand,

en ik boven op de ballon,

Extreme sporten op dit topniveau
04:30
is only possiblemogelijk if you practicepraktijk stepstap by stepstap,
79
252000
4000
04:34
if you really work hardhard on your skillsvaardigheden
80
256000
3000
04:37
and on your knowledgekennis.
81
259000
2000
en aan je kennis.
04:39
Of courseCursus you need to be in physicalfysiek, very good, conditionstaat,
82
261000
5000
04:44
so I'm trainingopleiding a lot.
83
266000
2000
dus ik train veel.
04:46
You need to have the bestbeste possiblemogelijk equipmentuitrusting.
84
268000
4000
Je hebt de best mogelijke uitrusting nodig.
04:50
And probablywaarschijnlijk the mostmeest importantbelangrijk is
85
272000
4000
Waarschijnlijk het belangrijkst is
04:54
you have to work on your mentalgeestelijk skillsvaardigheden, mentalgeestelijk preparationvoorbereiding.
86
276000
3000
04:57
And all this to come as closedichtbij as possiblemogelijk
87
279000
4000
05:01
to the humanmenselijk dreamdroom of beingwezen ablein staat to flyvlieg.
88
283000
4000
05:05
So for 2009,
89
287000
2000
Voor 2009
05:07
I'm trainingopleiding hardhard for my two newnieuwe projectsprojecten.
90
289000
4000
05:11
The first one, I want to setreeks a worldwereld- recordrecord

05:19
And I want to setreeks a newnieuwe recordrecord,
93

2000
Ook wil ik een nieuw record vestigen
05:21
with the longestlangste distanceafstand ever flowngevlogen.
94

3000
voor de langste afstand ooit gevlogen.
05:24
For my secondtweede projectproject,
95
306000
2000
Voor mijn tweede project,
05:26
I have a sensationalsensationele ideaidee
96
308000
3000
heb ik een sensationeel idee
05:29
of a jumpspringen that never has been donegedaan before.
97
311000
4000
05:33
So now, on the followingvolgend moviefilm you will see
98
315000
5000
Nu, in de volgende film zul je zien
05:38
that I'm much better in flyingvliegend a wingsuitWingsuit
99

10:25
JCJC: YetNog. But people are tryingproberen. Are you amongtussen those --
116
607000
2000
JC: Nog niet. Maar mensen proberen het. Ben jij één van degenen --
10:27
you're not going to commitplegen -- are you amongtussen those tryingproberen to do it?
117
609000
3000
10:30
UEUE: It's a dreamdroom. It's a dreamdroom. Yeah.
118
612000
2000
UE: Het is een droom. Het is een droom, ja.
10:32
We're still workingwerkend on it and we're
119
614000

We werken eraan en we
10:34
developingontwikkelen the wingsuitswingsuits to get better performanceprestatie,

3000
ontwikkelen wingsuits voor betere prestaties,
10:37
to get more knowledgekennis.

om meer kennis te krijgen.
10:39
And I believe soonspoedig.
122

Binnenkort, denk ik.
10:41
JCJC: All right. Well we will watch this spaceruimte. But I have two more questionsvragen.
123
623000
2000
JC: Oké. We gaan het in de gaten houden. Ik heb nog twee vragen.
10:43
What is the -- there was exhaustuitlaat comingkomt eraan
124
625000
2000
Wat waren de uitlaatgassen die
10:45

JCJC: That seemslijkt dangerousgevaarlijk.
131
637000
1000
JC: Dat lijkt gevaarlijk.
10:56
UEUE: No, smokerook is for two reasonsredenen,
132
638000
2000
10:58
you can see the speedsnelheid, you can see the way
133
640000
4000
11:02
where I was flyingvliegend.
134
644000
2000
dat ik aflegde.
11:04
That's reasonreden numberaantal one. And reasonreden numberaantal two:
135
646000
