ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Yves Rossy - Jetman
With a jet-powered wing attached to his body, Yves Rossy expands the possibilities of human flight.

Why you should listen

On May 7 of this year, Swiss pilot Yves Rossy stepped out of a helicopter 8,000 feet above the Grand Canyon and ... took off. Wearing a rigid wing powered by four model jet turbine engines, Rossy flew for eight minutes over the mile-deep trench, soaring over the red rocks before parachuting down to the Colorado River far below. It's the latest exploit in a life powered by one dream: to fly like a bird.

Wearing his single wing, Rossy really flies, steering with the movements of his body. In the last couple of years he has crossed the English Channel, flown over the Swiss Alps and performed aerobatic loops around a hot-air balloon; for his next quest, he is developing a new kind of parachute that will enable him to fly as low as 200 meters.

06:08
You take a positionposición like that.
67
353000
3000
Tomas una posición como esta.
06:11
And especiallyespecialmente when you take a trackingrastreo positionposición,
68
356000
3000
Y especialmente al colocarte en posición de rastreo,
06:14
you have the feelingsensación
69
359000
2000
tienes la sensación
06:16
that you are flyingvolador.
70
361000
2000
de ir volando.
06:18
And that's the nearestmás cercano thing to the dreamsueño.
71
363000

Y esto es lo más cercano a un sueño.
06:22
You have no machinemáquina around you.
72

06:25
You are just in the elementelemento.
73

06:27
It's very shortcorto and only in one directiondirección.
74
372000
3000
Es muy breve y vas en una sola dirección.
06:30
So the ideaidea
75
375000
2000
La idea era:
06:32
was, okay, keep that feelingsensación of freedomlibertad,
76
377000
5000
"bien, sostén esa sensación de libertad,
06:37
but changecambio the vectorvector and increaseincrementar the time.
77
382000

06:40
BGBG: So I'm kindtipo of curiouscurioso, what's your topparte superior speedvelocidad?
78
385000
3000
BG: Por curiosidad, ¿cuál es tu velocidad máxima?
06:43
YRYR: It's about 300 kmkm perpor hourhora before loopingbucle.
79
388000
4000
YR: Es como 300 km por hora antes de un bucle.
06:47
That meansmedio about 190 milesmillas perpor hourhora.
80
392000
3000
Es decir, como 190 millas por hora.
06:50
BGBG: And what's the weightpeso of the equipmentequipo you're carryingque lleva?
81
395000
2000
BG: Y ¿cuánto pesa el equipo que llevas?
06:52
YRYR: When I exitsalida fullcompleto of kerosenequeroseno,
82
397000
3000
YR: Al salir, lleno de combustible,
06:55
I'm about 55 kiloskilos.
83
400000

pesa como 55 kilos.
06:58
I have 55 kiloskilos on my back.
84
403000

Llevo 55 kilos a la espalda.
07:00
BGBG: And you're not pilotingpilotando?
85
405000
2000
BG: ¿Y no lo diriges?
07:02
There is no handleencargarse de, no steeringgobierno nothing?
86
407000
2000
¿No hay palanca ni timón ni nada?
07:04
It is purelypuramente your bodycuerpo,
87
409000
2000
¿Es sólo tu cuerpo?
07:06
and the wingsalas becomevolverse partparte of the bodycuerpo and vicevicio versaversa?
88
411000
2000
¿Las alas se vuelven parte del cuerpo y viceversa?
07:08
YRYR: That's really the goalGol,
89
413000
2000
YR: De eso se trata,
07:10
because if you put [in] steeringgobierno,
90
415000
3000
porque si le agregas un timón,
07:13
then you reinventreinventar the airplaneavión.
91
418000
2000
estás reinventando el avión.
07:15
And I wanted to keep this freedomlibertad of movementmovimiento.
92

Yo quería conservar la libertad de movimiento.

Es como un chico jugando a los aviones.
07:22
I want to go down like that.
94
427000
2000
Quiero bajar así.
07:24
And up I climbescalada, I turngiro.
95
429000
3000
Y subir y voltear.
07:27
It's really purepuro flyingvolador.
96
432000
3000
Es realmente puro vuelo.
07:30
It's not steeringgobierno, it's flightvuelo.
97
435000
3000
No es manejo, sólo vuelo.
07:33
BGBG: What kindtipo of trainingformación do you do,

09:33
about 20 timesveces --
145
558000
2000
unas 20 veces.
09:35
never with that typetipo of wingala, but at the beginningcomenzando.
146
560000
3000
Nunca con este tipo de alas, sino al principio.
09:38
I can releaselanzamiento my wingala
147
563000
3000
Puedo liberar las alas
09:41
when I am in a spingirar or unstableinestable.
148
566000
3000
si voy en un remolino o estoy inestable.
09:44
BGBG: We saw the 2009 crossingcruce of the GibraltarGibraltar StraitEstrecho
149
569000
3000
BG: Vimos el cruce del estrecho de Gibraltar del 2009
09:47
where you lostperdió controlcontrolar
150
572000
2000
cuando perdiste el control
09:49
and then you divedbuceado down into the cloudsnubes
151
574000
2000
y te fuiste en picada por las nubes
09:51
and in the oceanOceano.
152
576000
2000
hacia el mar.
09:53
So that was one of those casescasos where you let the wingsalas go, right?
153
578000
3000
Ese fue uno de aquellos casos en que tuviste que liberar las alas, ¿correcto?
09:56
YRYR: Yeah. I did try in [the] cloudsnubes,
154
581000
3000
YR: Sí. Traté de hacerlo en las nubes,
09:59
but you loseperder [orientationorientación completelycompletamente].
155
584000
3000
pero había perdido la orientación por completo.
10:02
So I did try to take, again,
156
587000
2000
Entonces traté de tomar de nuevo
10:04
a climbescalada altitudealtitud.
157
589000
3000
un ascenso.
10:07
I thought, okay, I will go out.
158
592000
2000
Pensé, bueno, saldré.
10:09
But mostmás probablyprobablemente I did something like that.
159
594000
4000
Pero probablemente hice algo así.
10:13
BGBG: Something that is not very safeseguro in imageimagen.
160
598000
3000
BG: Algo que no parece muy seguro en la imagen.
10:16
YRYR: But you feel great,
161
601000
2000
YR: Pero se siente delicioso,
10:18
but you have not the right altitudealtitud.
162
603000
5000
aunque no tenga la altura correcta.
10:23
So the nextsiguiente thing I saw was just blueazul.
163
608000
3000
Lo siguiente que ví fue todo azul:
10:26
It was the seamar.
164
611000
2000
era el mar.
10:28
I have alsoademás an audibleaudible altimeteraltímetro.
165
613000
2000
También tengo un altímetro sonoro.
10:30
So I was at my minimummínimo altitudealtitud
166
615000
3000
Y estaba a una altura mínima
10:33
in that vectorvector -- fastrápido --
167
618000
3000
en ese vector (rápido)
10:36
so I pulledtirado that.
168
621000
2000
así que lo accioné
10:38
And then I did openabierto my chutetolva.
169
623000
2000
y abrí el paracaídas.
10:40
BGBG: So the wingsalas have theirsu ownpropio parachuteparacaídas, and you have your two parachutesparacaídas.
170
625000
3000
BG: Entonces las alas tienen su propio paracaídas y tú tienes los tuyos.
10:43
YRYR: ExactlyExactamente. There is a rescuerescate parachuteparacaídas for the wingala
171
628000
3000
YR: Así es. Hay un paracaídas de rescate para las alas
10:46
for two reasonsrazones:
172
631000
2000
por dos razones:
10:48
so I can repairreparar it afterwarddespués
173
633000
2000
para poderlas reparar después
10:50
and especiallyespecialmente so nobodynadie takes that, just on his headcabeza.
174
635000
4000
y especialmente para que no le caigan en la cabeza a alguien.
10:54
BGBG: I see. Maybe come back here.
175
639000
3000
BG: Veo. Vuelve aquí.
10:57
This is riskyarriesgado stuffcosas indeeden efecto.
176
642000
2000
Es algo ciertamente riesgoso.
10:59
People have diedmurió tryingmolesto to do this kindtipo of thing.
177
644000
3000
Ciertas personas han muerto tratando de hacer esto.
11:02
And you don't look like a crazyloca guy; you're a Swisssuizo airlineaerolínea pilotpiloto,
178
647000
3000
No pareces un tipo loco; eres un piloto comercial suizo,
11:05
so you're rathermás bien a checklistlista de control kindtipo of guy.
179
650000
3000
eres de los que revisan con lista.
11:08
I assumeasumir you have standardsestándares.
180
653000
2000
Supongo que tienes tus normas.
11:10
YRYR: Yeah. I have no checklistlista de control for that.
181
655000
3000
YR: Sí. Pero no tengo lista de revisiones.
11:13
BGBG: Let's not tell you employerempleador.
182
658000
3000
BG: No se lo digamos a tus jefes.
11:16
YRYR: No, that's really two worldsmundos.
183
661000
3000
YR: No. Son dos mundos distintos.
11:20
CivilCivil aviationaviación is something that we know very well.
184
665000
3000
En la aviación civil hay que saberlo todo muy bien.
11:23
We have a hundredcien yearsaños of experienceexperiencia.
185
668000
3000
Hay cien años de experiencia.
11:26
And you can adaptadaptar really preciselyprecisamente.
186
671000
4000
Y uno se puede adaptar bien, con precisión.
11:30
With that,
187
675000
2000
Con esto,
11:32
I have to adaptadaptar to something newnuevo.
188
677000
2000
tengo que adaptarme a algo nuevo.
11:34
That meansmedio improviseimprovisar.
189
679000
2000
O sea, hay que improvisar.
11:36
So it's really a playjugar betweenEntre these two approachesenfoques.
190
681000
3000
Es un juego entre dos enfoques distintos.
11:39
Something that I know very well --
191
684000
2000
Algo que conozco muy bien,
11:41
these principlesprincipios, for exampleejemplo,
192
686000
2000
por ejemplo, estos principios básicos,
11:43
we have two enginesmotores on an AirbusAerobús;
193
688000
2000
en un Airbus hay dos turbinas
11:45
with only one enginemotor, you can flymosca it.
194
690000
2000
y puedes volar con una sola.
11:47
So planplan B, always a planplan B.
195
692000
3000
Hay un plan B. Siempre lo hay.
11:50
In a fightercombatiente, you have an ejectionexpulsión seatasiento.
196
695000
2000
En uno de combate hay silla de expulsión.
11:52
That's my ejectionexpulsión seatasiento.
197
697000
2000
Esta es mi silla de expulsión.
11:54
So I have the approachenfoque of a professionalprofesional pilotpiloto
198
699000
3000
Tengo el sentido de un piloto profesional
11:57
with the respectel respeto of a pioneerpionero
199
702000
5000
con el respeto de un explorador
12:02
in frontfrente of MotherMadre NatureNaturaleza.
200
707000
3000
frente a la madre naturaleza.
12:05
BGBG: It's well said. It's well said.
201
710000
3000
BG: Bien dicho. Muy bien dicho.
12:08
What happenssucede if one of the enginesmotores stopsparadas?
202
713000
3000
¿Qué pasa si se detiene uno de los motores?
12:11
YRYR: I do a rollrodar.
203
716000
4000
YR: Doy vueltas.
12:15
And then I stabilizeestabilizar,
204
720000
2000
Y luego me estabilizo,
12:17
and accordingconforme to my altitudealtitud,
205
722000
2000
y según la altura,
12:19
I continuecontinuar on two or threeTres enginesmotores.
206
724000
2000
continúo con dos o tres motores.
12:21
It's sometimesa veces possibleposible --
207
726000
2000
A veces es posible.
12:23
it's quitebastante complicatedComplicado to explainexplique --
208
728000
3000
No es fácil de explicar,
12:26
but accordingconforme to whichcual regimerégimen I was,
209
731000
4000
pero según el régimen en que vaya,
12:30
I can continuecontinuar on two
210
735000
2000
puedo continuar con dos,
12:32
and try to get a nicebonito placelugar to landtierra, and then I openabierto my parachuteparacaídas.
211
737000
3000
trato de buscar un lugar adecuado para aterrizar y luego abro el paracaídas.
12:35
BGBG: So the beginningcomenzando of the flightvuelo
212
740000
2000
BG: Para iniciar el vuelo
12:37
is actuallyactualmente you jumpsaltar off a planeavión or a helicopterhelicóptero,
213
742000
2000
tienes que saltar de un avión o un helicóptero,
12:39
and you go on a divebucear and accelerateacelerar the enginesmotores,
214
744000
3000
entras en picada y aceleras los motores
12:42
and then you basicallybásicamente take off mid-airaire somewherealgun lado.
215
747000
3000
para arrancar en pleno vuelo.
12:45
And then the landingaterrizaje, as we have seenvisto,
216
750000
2000
Y luego para el aterrizaje, como hemos visto,
12:47
arrivingllegando on this sidelado of the channelcanal,
217
752000
2000
llegas a este lado del canal
12:49
is throughmediante a parachuteparacaídas.
218
754000
2000
con un paracaídas.
12:51
So just as a curiositycuriosidad,
219
756000
2000
Por curiosidad,
12:53
where did you landtierra when you flewvoló over the Grandgrandioso CanyonCañón?
220
758000
3000
¿en dónde aterrizaste cuando volaste sobre el Gran Cañón?
12:56
Did you landtierra on the rimborde, down at the bottomfondo?
221
761000
3000
¿Aterrizaste en el borde o allá abajo?
12:59
YRYR: It was down on the bottomfondo.
222
764000
2000
YR: Fue allá abajo, en el fondo.
13:01
And I camevino back afterwarddespués
223
766000
2000
Y luego volví
13:03
on the sledtrineo of the helicopterhelicóptero back.
224
768000
2000
en el patín de un helicóptero.
13:05
But it was too stoneypedregoso and fullcompleto of cactuscactus on topparte superior.
225
770000
5000
Pero arriba había muchas piedras y cactus.
13:10
BGBG: That's exactlyexactamente why I askedpreguntó the questionpregunta.
226
775000
2000
BG: Por eso te preguntaba.
13:12
YRYR: And alsoademás the currentscorrientes are quitebastante funnygracioso there.
227
777000
5000
YR: Además hay corrientes allá muy raras.
13:17
There is biggrande thermaltérmico activityactividad,
228
782000
2000
Mucha actividad térmica
13:19
biggrande differencediferencia in altitudealtitud alsoademás.
229
784000
2000
y grandes diferencias en altura.
13:21
So it was much safermás seguro for me to landtierra at the bottomfondo.
230
786000
4000
Así, era mucho más seguro aterrizar en el fondo.
13:25
BGBG: So I think that right now, manymuchos people in the audienceaudiencia
231
790000
3000
BG: Pienso que ahora mismo, muchos en la audiencia
13:28
are askingpreguntando, "Okay, when are you developingdesarrollando a double-seaterbiplaza
232
793000
2000
se están preguntando "¿Cuándo desarrollará uno de dos puestos
13:30
so they can flymosca with you?"
233
795000
2000
para volar con él?".
13:32
YRYR: I have a standardestándar answerresponder.
234
797000
2000
YR: Tengo una respuesta estándar.
13:34
Have you ever seenvisto tandemtándem birdsaves?
235
799000
4000
¿Han visto alguna vez aves en tándem?
13:38
BGBG: PerfectPerfecto answerresponder.
236
803000
2000
BG: Respuesta perfecta.
13:40
(ApplauseAplausos)
237
805000

13:50
YvesYves, one last questionpregunta.
238
815000
2000
Yves, una última pregunta.
13:52
What's nextsiguiente for you? What's nextsiguiente for JetmanJetman?
239
817000
3000
¿Qué será lo próximo? ¿Qué más hará el Jetman?
13:55
YRYR: First, to instructinstruir a youngermas joven guy.
240
820000
4000
YR: Primero, entrenar a un joven.
13:59
I want to sharecompartir it,

824000
2000
Quiero compartirlo,

14:09
YRYR: Yes, with the finalfinal goalGol to take off,

YR: Sí, con el objetivo de despegar,
