ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Neil Burgess - Neuroscientist
At University College in London, Neil Burgess researches how patterns of electrical activity in brain cells guide us through space.

Why you should listen

Neil Burgessis is deputy director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, where he investigates of the role of the hippocampus in spatial navigation and episodic memory. His research is directed at answering questions such as: How are locations represented, stored and used in the brain? What processes and which parts of the brain are involved in remembering the spatial and temporal context of everyday events, and in finding one's way about?

To explore this space, he and his team use a range of methods for gathering data, including pioneering uses of virtual reality, as well as computational modelling and electrophysiological analysis of the function of hippocampal neurons in the rat, functional imaging of human navigation, and neuropsychological experiments on spatial and episodic memory.

A parallel interest: Investigating our human short-term memory for serial order, or how we know our 123s.

03:12
So the cell細胞 on the left, you can see,

it fires火災 wheneverいつでも the animal動物 gets取得 near近く
79

83
189000
3000
03:27
And the cell細胞 on the right there
84
192000

fires火災 wheneverいつでも there's a boundary境界 to the south,

03:31
whetherかどうか it's the dropドロップ at the edgeエッジ of the table or a wall
86
196000

or even the gapギャップ betweenの間に two tablesテーブル that are pulled引っ張られた apart離れて.
87
198000
3000
03:36
So that's one way in whichどの we think
88
201000
2000
03:38
place場所 cells細胞 determine決定する where the animal動物 is as it's exploring探検する around.
89
203000
3000
03:41
We can alsoまた、 testテスト where we think objectsオブジェクト are,
90
206000
3000
03:44
like this goalゴール flagフラグ, in simple単純 environments環境 --
91
209000
3000
03:47
or indeed確かに, where your car would be.
92
212000
2000
03:49
So we can have people explore探検する an environment環境
93
214000
3000
03:52
and see the locationロケーション they have to remember思い出す.
94
217000
3000
03:55
And then, if we put them back in the environment環境,
95
220000
2000
03:57
generally一般的に they're quiteかなり good at puttingパッティング a markerマーカー down
96

where they thought that flagフラグ or their彼らの car was.
97
224000
3000
04:02
But on some trials試行,
98
227000
2000
04:04
we could change変化する the shape形状 and sizeサイズ of the environment環境
99
229000
2000
04:06
like we did with the place場所 cell細胞.
100
231000
2000
04:08
In that case場合, we can see
101
233000
2000
04:10
how where they think the flagフラグ had been changes変更
102
235000
3000
04:13
as a function関数 of how you change変化する the shape形状 and sizeサイズ of the environment環境.
103
238000
3000
04:16
And what you see, for example,
104
241000
2000
04:18
if the flagフラグ was where that crossクロス was in a small小さい square平方 environment環境,
105
243000
3000
04:21
and then if you ask尋ねる people where it was,
106
246000
2000
04:23
but you've made the environment環境 biggerより大きい,
107
248000
2000
04:25
where they think the flagフラグ had been
108
250000
2000
04:27
stretchesストレッチ out in exactly正確に the same同じ way
109
252000
2000
04:29
that the place場所 cell細胞 firing発砲 stretched伸ばされた out.
110
254000
2000
04:31
It's as if you remember思い出す where the flagフラグ was
111
256000
2000
04:33
by storing保存する the patternパターン of firing発砲 across横断する all of your place場所 cells細胞
112
258000
3000
04:36
at that locationロケーション,
113
261000
2000
04:38
and then you can get back to that locationロケーション
114
263000
2000
04:40
by moving動く around
115
265000
2000
04:42
so that you bestベスト match一致 the current現在 patternパターン of firing発砲 of your place場所 cells細胞
116
267000
2000
04:44
with that stored保存された patternパターン.
117
269000
2000
04:46
That guidesガイド you back to the locationロケーション that you want to remember思い出す.
118
271000
3000
04:49
But we alsoまた、 know where we are throughを通して movement移動.
119
274000
3000
04:52
So if we take some outboundアウトバウンド pathパス --
120

perhapsおそらく we parkパーク and we wanderさまよう off --
121

04:56
we know because our own自分の movements動き,
122
281000
2000

05:02
And place場所 cells細胞 alsoまた、 get this kind種類 of pathパス integration統合 input入力
125
287000

from a kind種類 of cell細胞 calledと呼ばれる a gridグリッド cell細胞.
126
291000

05:15
But now as the ratラット explores探検する around,
