ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jonathan Drori - Educator
Jonathan Drori commissioned the BBC's very first websites, one highlight in a long career devoted to online culture and educational media -- and understanding how we learn.

Why you should listen

Jonathan Drori has dedicated his career to media and learning. As the Head of Commissioning for BBC Online, he led the effort to create bbc.co.uk, the online face of the BBC (an effort he recalls fondly). He came to the web from the TV side of the BBC, where as an editor and producer he headed up dozens of television series on science, education and the arts.

After almost two decades at the BBC, he's now a director at Changing Media Ltd., a media and education consultancy, and is a visiting professor at University of Bristol, where he studies educational media and misperceptions in science. He continues to executive produce the occasional TV series, including 2004's award-winning "The DNA Story" and 2009's "Great Sperm Race." He is on the boards of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Woodland Trust.

So if all human人間 life depends依存する on plants植物,

01:43
is by storing保存する seeds種子.
36

01:45
Because seeds種子, in all their彼らの diverse多様 glory栄光,
37

01:56
So here is the building建物;
41
104000
2000
02:01
But it goes行く down below以下 ground接地 manyたくさんの stories物語.
43
109000

02:03
And it's the largest最大 seedシード bankバンク in the world世界.
44
111000
2000
02:05
It exists存在する not only in southern南方の Englandイングランド,

02:11
This is a nuclear-proof核防護の facility施設.
47

02:13
God forbid禁じる that it should have to withstand耐える that.
48
121000
3000
02:16
So if you're going to buildビルドする a seedシード bankバンク, you have to decide決めます
49
124000
2000
02:18
what you're going to store格納 in it. Right?
50
126000
2000
02:20
And we decided決定しました that what we want to store格納 first of all,
51
128000
2000
02:22
are the species that are most最も under threat脅威.
52
130000
3000
02:25
And those are the dryドライ land土地 species.
53
133000

02:27
So first of all we did deals

02:39
We have 120 partnerパートナー institutions機関 all over the world世界,

02:44
People come from all over the world世界 to learn学ぶ,
61
152000
2000
02:46
and then they go away and plan計画 exactly正確に how
62
154000
2000
02:48
they're going to collect集める these seeds種子.
63
156000
3000
02:51
They have thousands of people all over the world世界
64
159000
2000
02:53
taggingタグ付け places場所 where those plants植物 are said to exist存在する.
65
161000
3000
02:56
They searchサーチ for them. They find them in flower.
66
164000
2000
02:58
And they go back when their彼らの seeds種子 have arrived到着した.
67
166000
4000
03:02
And they collect集める the seeds種子. All over the world世界.
68
170000
3000
03:05
The seeds種子 -- some of if is very untechnical無所属.
69
173000
4000
03:09
You kind種類 of shovelシャベル them all in to bagsバッグ and dryドライ them off.
70
177000
3000
03:12
You labelラベル them. You do some high-techハイテク things here and there,
71
180000
3000
03:15
some low-techローテク things here and there.
72
183000
3000
03:18
And the mainメイン thing is that you have to dryドライ them
73
186000
2000
03:20
very carefully慎重に, at low低い temperature温度.
74
188000
3000
03:23
And then you have to store格納 them
75
191000
2000
03:25
at about minusマイナス 20 degrees C --
76
193000
2000
03:27
that's about minusマイナス four4つの Fahrenheit華氏, I think --
77
195000
2000
03:29
with a very critically批判的に low低い moisture水分 contentコンテンツ.
78
197000
4000
03:33
And these seeds種子 will be ableできる to germinate発芽する,
79
201000
3000
03:36
we believe, with manyたくさんの of the species,
80
204000
3000
03:39
in thousands of years,
81
207000
2000
03:41
and certainly確かに in hundreds数百 of years.
82
209000
3000
03:44
It's no good storing保存する the seeds種子 if you don't know they're still viable実行可能な.
83
212000
3000
03:47
So everyすべて 10 years we do germination発芽 testsテスト
84
215000
3000
03:50
on everyすべて sampleサンプル of seeds種子 that we have.
85
218000
3000
03:53
And this is a distributed配布された networkネットワーク.
86
221000
2000
03:55
So all around the world世界 people are doing the same同じ thing.
87
223000
3000
03:58
And that enables可能にする us to develop開発する germination発芽 protocolsプロトコル.
88
226000
3000
04:01
That means手段 that we know the right combination組み合わせ of heat
89
229000
3000
04:04
and coldコールド and the cyclesサイクル that you have to get
90
232000
2000
04:06
to make the seedシード germinate発芽する.
91
234000
3000
04:09
And that is very useful有用 information情報.
92
237000
2000
04:11
And then we grow成長する these things,
93
239000
2000
04:13
and we tell people, back in the countries where these seeds種子 have come from,
94

4000
04:17
"Look, actually実際に we're not just storing保存する this

04:19
to get the seeds種子 later後で,
96
247000
2000
04:21
but we can give you this information情報 about
97
