we've been striving to shorten the gap between us

temos procurado encurtar a distância entre nós

the gap between our physical world

00:26
And this gap has become shorter,
6
14896

E essa distância tem ficado menor,
00:30
shorter, and even shorter,
7
18823

menor, e ainda menor,
00:33
and now this gap is shortened down
8
21588
1486
e agora essa distância foi reduzida
00:35
to less than a millimeter,
9

a menos de um milímetro,

12

00:44
But I wondered, what if there could be no boundary at all?
13
32773
5039
00:49
I started to imagine what this would look like.
14
37812
3744
Comecei a imaginar como seria.
00:53
First, I created this tool
15
41556
2451
Primeiro, eu criei essa ferramenta
00:56
which penetrates into the digital space,
16
44007
2509
que penetra no espaço virtual,
00:58
so when you press it hard on the screen,
17
46516
2091
01:00
it transfers its physical body into pixels.
18
48607
3333
ele transfere seu corpo físico em pixels.
01:03
Designers can materialize their ideas

01:12
So with this tool, this boundary has been broken.
23

Com essa ferramente, esse limite foi quebrado.

01:40
for sensing your fingers and face,
34
88349
1840
para captar nossos dedos e face,
01:42
now you can lift up your hands from the keyboard
35
90189
2234
agora podemos levantar nossas mãos do teclado
01:44
and reach inside this 3D space
36
92423
2914
e alcançar o espaço 3D
01:47
and grab pixels with your bare hands.
37

01:52
Because windows and files have a position in the real space,
39
100808
4206
Porque janelas e arquivos têm uma posição no espaço real,
01:57
selecting them is as easy as grabbing a book off your shelf.
40
105014
3359
02:00
Then you can flip through this book
41
108373
2153
Então, podemos folhear esse livro
02:02
while highlighting the lines, words
42
110526
1717
enquanto destacamos as linhas, palavras
02:04
on the virtual touch pad below each floating window.
43
112243
2564
no touchpad virtual abaixo de cada janela.
02:06
Architects can stretch or rotate the models
44
114807
2535
Arquitetos podem esticar e girar os modelos
02:09
with their two hands directly.
45
117342
2425
diretamente com ambas as mãos.
02:11
So in these examples,
46
119767
1620
Nesses exemplos,
02:13
we are reaching into the digital world.
47
121387
2737
estamos entrando no mundo digital.
02:16
But how about reversing its role
48
124124
2346
Mas que tal reverter seu papel
02:18
and having the digital information reach us instead?
49
126470
4819
02:23
I'm sure many of us have had the experience
50
131289
1756
02:25
of buying and returning items online.
51
133045
2423
de comprar e devolver produtos online.
02:27
But now you don't have to worry about it.
52
135468
1793
02:29
What I got here is an online augmented fitting room.
53
137261
4822
02:34
This is a view that you get from
54
142083
1902
Essa é a visão que você tem
02:35
head-mounted or see-through display
55
143985
1744
do display head-mounted
02:37
when the system understands the geometry of your body.
56
145729
5147
02:42
Taking this idea further, I started to think,
57
150876
3551
Levando essa idéia adiante, comecei a pensar,
02:46
instead of just seeing these pixels in our space,
58
154427
3369
02:49
how can we make it physical
59
157796
1522
como podemos torná-lo físico
02:51
so that we can touch and feel it?
60
159318
4262
para que possamos tocá-lo e sentí-lo?
02:55
What would such a future look like?
61
163580
3049
Como esse futuro seria?
02:58
At MIT Media Lab, along with my advisor Hiroshi Ishii
62
166629
3658
Na MIT Media Lab, juntamente com meu orientador Hiroshi Ishii
03:02
and my collaborator Rehmi Post,
63
170287
2023
e meu colaborador Rehmi Post,
03:04
we created this one physical pixel.
64
172310
3644
criamos esse pixel físico.
03:07
Well, in this case, this spherical magnet
65
175954
2624
Nesse caso, esse ímã esférico
03:10
acts like a 3D pixel in our space,
66
178578
2352
03:12
which means that both computers and people
67
180930
2904
03:15
can move this object to anywhere
68
183834
1898
podem mover esse objeto para qualquer lugar
03:17
within this little 3D space.
69
185732
1969
dentro desse pequeno espaço 3D;
03:19
What we did was essentially canceling gravity
70
187701
3492
03:23
and controlling the movement by combining
71
191193
2139
e controlar o movimento combinando
03:25
magnetic levitation and mechanical actuation
72
193332
2824
levitação magnética e acionamento mecânico
03:28
and sensing technologies.
73
196156
2477
e tecnologias de sensoriamento.
03:30
And by digitally programming the object,
74
198633
2505
E programando o objeto digitalmente,
03:33
we are liberating the object from constraints
75
201138
2777
estamos liberando o objeto das limitações
03:35
of time and space, which means that now,
76
203915
3435
03:39
human motions can be recorded and played back
77
207350
3896
movimentos humanos podem ser gravados, reproduzidos
03:43
and left permanently in the physical world.
78
211246
3619
e armazenados permanentemente no mundo físico.
03:46
So choreography can be taught physically over distance
79
214865
3033
03:49
and Michael Jordan's famous shooting can be replicated
80
217898
2525
03:52
over and over as a physical reality.
81
220423
3549
várias vezes como uma realidade física.
03:55
Students can use this as a tool
82
223972
2180
Estudantes podem utilizar isto como uma ferramenta
03:58
to learn about the complex concepts
83
226152
1942
para aprender sobre conceitos complexos
04:00
such as planetary motion, physics,
84
228094
4084
como movimento dos planetas, física,
04:04
and unlike computer screens or textbooks,
85
232178
2819
e, diferente de telas de computadores e livros didáticos
04:06
this is a real, tangible experience
86
234997
2482
esta é uma experiência real, tangível
04:09
that you can touch and feel, and it's very powerful.
87
237479
3658
04:13
And what's more exciting
88
241137
1982
E o que é mais interessante
04:15
than just turning what's currently in the computer physical
89
243119
3348
04:18
is to start imagining how programming the world
90
246467
3189
é começar a imaginar como programar o mundo
04:21
will alter even our daily physical activities.
91
249656
3696
04:27
(Laughter)
92
255460
2483
(Risada)
04:29
As you can see, the digital information
93
257943
2756
Como vocês podem ver, a informação digital
04:32
will not just show us something
94
260699
1518
não irá apenas nos mostrar algo
04:34
but it will start directly acting upon us
95
262217
2110
mas começará a agir diretamente sobre nós
04:36
as a part of our physical surroundings
96
264327
2299
04:38
without disconnecting ourselves from our world.
97
266626
4198
sem nos desconectar do nosso mundo.
04:42
Today, we started by talking about the boundary,
98
270824
4346
Hoje, começamos falando sobre o limite,
04:47
but if we remove this boundary,
99
275170
2680
mas se removermos esse limite,
04:49
the only boundary left is our imagination.
100
277850

o único que irá continuar existindo será nossa imaginação.
