Christopher deCharms - Brain researcher
Christopher deCharms is working on a way to use fMRI scans to show brain activity -- in real time.

Why you should listen

Neuroscientist Christopher deCharms is helping to develop a new kind of MRI that allows doctor and patient to look inside the brain in real time -- to see visual representations of brain processes as they happen. With his company Omneuron, deCharms has developed technology they call rtfMRI, for "real-time functional MRI" -- which is exactly what it sounds like. You move your arm, your brain lights up. You feel pain, your brain lights up.

How could we use the ability to see our brains in action? For a start, to help treat chronic pain with a kind of biofeedback; being able to visualize pain can help patients control it. And longer-term uses boggle the mind. Ours is the first generation, he believes, to be able to train and build our minds as systematically as a weightlifter builds a muscle. What will we do with this?

deCharms is also the author of the book Two Views of Mind, studying Buddhist theories of perception from a neuroscientist's perspective.

00:30
I'm going to tell you about that technology技术.
6
18000
3000
00:33
People have wanted to look inside the human人的 mind心神,
7
21000
1000
00:34
the human人的 brain, for thousands数千 of years年份.
8
22000
3000
00:37
Well, coming未来 out of the research研究 labs实验室 just now, for our generation, is the possibility可能性 to do that.
9
25000
5000
00:42
People envision预见 this as being存在 very difficult.
10
30000
2000
00:44
You had to take a spaceship飞船, shrink收缩 it down, inject注入 it into the bloodstream血液.
11
32000
4000
00:48
It was terribly可怕 dangerous危险. (Laughter笑声)
12
36000
2000
00:50
You could be attacked袭击 by white白色 blood血液 cells细胞 in the arteries动脉.
13
38000
3000
00:53
But now, we have a real真实 technology技术 to do this.
14
41000
4000
00:57
We're going to fly into my colleague同事 Peter's彼得 brain.
15
45000
2000
00:59
We're going to do it non-invasively非侵入性 using运用 MRIMRI.
16
47000
3000
01:02
We don't have to inject注入 anything. We don't need radiation辐射.
17
50000
4000
01:06
We will be able能够 to fly into the anatomy解剖学 of Peter's彼得 brain -- literally按照字面, fly into his body身体 --
18
54000
5000
01:11
but more importantly重要的, we can look into his mind心神.
19
59000
2000
01:13
When Peter彼得 moves移动 his arm, that yellow黄色 spot you see there
20
61000
3000
01:16
is the interface接口 to the functioning功能 of Peter's彼得 mind心神 taking服用 place地点.
21
64000
4000
01:20
Now you've seen看到 before that with electrodes电极 you can control控制 robotic机器人 arms武器,
22
68000
3000
01:23
that brain imaging成像 and scanners扫描仪 can show显示 you the insides内部 of brains大脑.
23
71000
4000
01:27
What's new is that that process处理 has typically一般 taken采取 days or months个月 of analysis分析.
24
75000
5000
01:32
We've我们已经 collapsed倒塌 that through通过 technology技术 to milliseconds毫秒,
25
80000
3000
01:35
and that allows允许 us to let Peter彼得 to look at his brain in real真实 time as he's inside the scanner扫描器.
26
83000
4000
01:39
He can look at these 65,000 points of activation激活 per second第二.
27
87000
5000
01:44
If he can see this pattern模式 in his own拥有 brain, he can learn学习 how to control控制 it.
28
92000
4000
01:48
There have been three ways方法 to try to impact碰撞 the brain:
29
96000
3000
01:51
the therapist's治疗师 couch长椅, pills and the knife.
30
99000
3000
01:55
This is a fourth第四 alternative替代 that you are soon不久 going to have.
31
103000
4000
01:59
We all know that as we form形成 thoughts思念, they form形成 deep channels渠道 in our minds头脑 and in our brains大脑.
32
107000
5000
02:04
Chronic慢性 pain疼痛 is an example. If you burn烧伤 yourself你自己, you pull your hand away.
33
112000
4000
02:08
But if you're still in pain疼痛 in six months'个月 or six years'年份' time,
34
116000
4000
02:12
it's because these circuits电路 are producing生产 pain疼痛 that's no longer helping帮助 you.
35
120000
4000
02:16
If we can look at the activation激活 in the brain that's producing生产 the pain疼痛,
36
124000
3000
02:19
we can form形成 3D models楷模 and watch in real真实 time the brain process处理 information信息,
37
127000
5000
02:24
and then we can select选择 the areas that produce生产 the pain疼痛.
38
132000
3000
02:27
So put your arms武器 back up and flex柔性 your bicep二头肌.
39
135000
3000
02:30
Now imagine想像 that you will soon不久 be able能够 to look inside your brain
40
138000
4000
02:34
and select选择 brain areas to do that same相同 thing.
41
142000
2000
02:36
What you're seeing眼看 here is, we've我们已经 selected the pathways途径 in the brain of a chronic慢性 pain疼痛 patient患者.
42
144000
4000
02:40
This may可能 shock休克 you, but we're literally按照字面 reading this person's人的 brain in real真实 time.
43
148000
4000
02:44
They're watching观看 their own拥有 brain activation激活,
44
152000
2000
02:46
and they're controlling控制 the pathway that produces产生 their pain疼痛.
45
154000
4000
02:50
They're learning学习 to flex柔性 this system系统 that releases发布 their own拥有 endogenous内源性 opiates鸦片.
46
158000
4000
02:54
As they do it, in the upper left is a display显示
47
162000
3000
02:57
that's yoked同负一轭 to their brain activation激活 of their own拥有 pain疼痛 being存在 controlled受控.
48
165000
4000
03:01
When they control控制 their brain, they can control控制 their pain疼痛.
49
169000
4000
03:05
This is an investigational研究性 technology技术,
50
173000
2000
03:07
but, in clinical临床 trials试验, we're seeing眼看 a 44 to 64 percent百分 decrease减少 in chronic慢性 pain疼痛 patients耐心.
51
175000
5000
03:12
This is not "The Matrix矩阵." You can only do this to yourself你自己. You take control控制.
52
180000
5000
03:17
I've seen看到 inside my brain. You will too, soon不久.
53
185000
4000
03:21
When you do, what do you want to control控制?
54
189000
3000
03:24
You will be able能够 to look at all the aspects方面 that make you yourself你自己, all your experiences经验.
55
192000
5000
03:29
These are some of the areas we're working加工 on today今天 that I don't have time to go into in detail详情.
56
197000
5000
03:34
But I want to leave离开 with you the big question.
57
202000
3000
03:37
We are the first generation that's going to be able能够 to enter输入 into,
58
205000
3000
03:40
using运用 this technology技术, the human人的 mind心神 and brain.
59
