00:25
from the University大學 of Chicago芝加哥 and I
4
10000
2000
00:27
devised設計 maybe 15 years年份 ago.
5
12000
3000
00:30
The program程序, in a sense,
6
15000
2000
00:32
is an example of behavioral行為的 finance金融
7
17000
2000
00:34
on steroids類固醇 --
8
19000
2000
00:36
how we could really use behavioral行為的 finance金融.
9
21000
3000
00:39
Now you might威力 ask, what is behavioral行為的 finance金融?
10
24000
3000
00:42
So let's think about how we manage管理 our money.
11
27000
3000
00:45
Let's start開始 with mortgages抵押貸款.
12
30000
3000
00:48
It's kind of a recent最近 topic話題,
13
33000
2000
00:50
at least最小 in the U.S.
14
35000
2000
00:52
A lot of people buy購買
15
37000
2000
00:54
the biggest最大 house they can afford給予,
16
39000
3000
00:57
and actually其實 slightly bigger than that.
17
42000
3000
01:00
And then they foreclose
01:03
And then they blame the banks銀行
19
48000
2000
01:05
for being存在 the bad guys who gave them the mortgages抵押貸款.
20
50000
3000
01:08
Let's also think about
21
53000
2000
01:10
how we manage管理 risks風險 --
22
55000
2000
01:12
for example, investing投資 in the stock股票 market市場.
23
57000
2000
01:14
Two years年份 ago, three years年份 ago, about four years年份 ago,
24
59000
3000
01:17
markets市場 did well.
25
62000
2000
01:19
We were risk風險 takers考生, of course課程.
26
64000
3000
01:22
Then market市場 stocks個股 seize搶占
27
67000
2000
01:24
and we're like, "Wow.
28
69000
2000
01:26
These losses損失, they feel, emotionally感情上,
29
71000
3000
01:29
they feel very different不同
30
74000
3000
01:32
from what we actually其實 thought about it
31
77000
3000
01:35
when markets市場 were going up."
32
80000
2000
01:37
So we're probably大概 not doing a great job工作
33
82000
3000
01:40
when it comes to risk風險 taking服用.
34
85000
2000
01:42
How many許多 of you have iPhonesiPhone手機?

48
119000
2000
02:16
that many許多 more of you

121000
2000
02:18
insure保證 your iPhonesiPhone手機 than your lives生活,
50
123000
3000
02:21
even when you have kids孩子.
51
126000
2000
02:23
We're not doing that well when it comes to insurance保險.
52
128000
3000
02:26
The average平均 American美國 household家庭

135000
3000
02:33
on lotteries彩票.
55
138000
2000
02:35
And I know it sounds聲音 crazy.
56
140000
3000
02:38
How many許多 of you spend a thousand dollars美元 a year on lotteries彩票?
57
143000
3000
02:41
No one.
58
146000
2000
02:43
So that tells告訴 us that the people not in this room房間
59
148000
3000
02:46
are spending開支 more than a thousand
60
151000
2000
02:48
to get the average平均 to a thousand.
61
153000
3000
02:51
Low-income低收入 people
62
156000
2000
02:53
spend a lot more than a thousand on lotteries彩票.
63
158000
4000
02:57
So where does it take us?
64
162000
2000
02:59
We're not doing a great job工作 managing管理的 money.
65
164000
3000
03:02
Behavioral行為的 finance金融 is really a combination組合

03:05
of psychology心理學 and economics經濟學,
67
170000
2000
03:07
trying to understand理解
68
172000
2000
03:09
the money mistakes錯誤 people make.
69
174000
2000
03:11
And I can keep standing常設 here
70
176000
2000
03:13
for the 12 minutes分鐘 and 53 seconds that I have left
71
178000
4000

03:19
we manage管理 money,
73
184000
2000
03:21
and at the end結束 you're going to ask, "How can we help people?"
74
186000
3000
03:24
And that's what I really want to focus焦點 on today今天.
75
189000
3000
03:27
How do we take an understanding理解
76
192000
2000
03:29
of the money mistakes錯誤 people make,
77
194000
3000
03:32
and then turning車削 the behavioral行為的 challenges挑戰
78
197000
3000
03:37
And what I'm going to talk about today今天
80
202000
2000
03:39
is Save保存 More Tomorrow明天.
81
204000
2000
03:41
I want to address地址 the issue問題
82
206000
2000
03:43
of savings.
83
208000
2000
03:45
We have on the screen
84
210000
2000
03:47
a representative代表 sample樣品
85
212000
2000
03:49
of 100 Americans美國人.
86
214000
2000
03:51
And we're going to look at their saving保存 behavior行為.
87
216000
3000
03:54
First thing to notice注意 is,
88
219000
2000
03:56
half of them
89
221000
2000
03:58
do not even have access訪問
90
223000
2000
04:00
to a 401(k) plan計劃.
91
225000
2000
04:02
They cannot不能 make savings easy簡單.
92
227000
3000
04:05
They cannot不能 have money go away from their paycheck薪水
93
230000
3000
04:08
into a 401(k) plan計劃
94
233000
2000
04:10
before they see it,
95
235000
2000
04:12
before they can touch觸摸 it.
96
237000
2000
04:14
What about the remaining其餘 half of the people?
97
239000
3000
04:17
Some of them elect not to save保存.
98
242000
3000
04:20
They're just too lazy.
99
245000
2000
04:22
They never get around to logging記錄 into a complicated複雜 website網站
100
247000
3000
04:25
and doing 17 clicks點擊 to join加入 the 401(k) plan計劃.
101
250000
3000
04:28
And then they have to decide決定 how they're going to invest投資
102
253000
2000
04:30
in their 52 choices選擇,
103
255000
2000
04:32
and they never heard聽說 about what is a money market市場 fund基金.
104
257000
4000
04:36
And they get overwhelmed不堪重負 and the just don't join加入.
105
261000
2000
04:38
How many許多 people end結束 up saving保存 to a 401(k) plan計劃?
106
263000
5000
04:43
One third第三 of Americans美國人.
107
268000
3000
04:46
Two thirds三分之二 are not saving保存 now.
108
271000
2000
04:48
Are they saving保存 enough足夠?
109
273000
2000
04:50
Take out those
110
275000
2000
04:52
who say they save保存 too little.
111
277000
2000
04:54
One out of 10
112
279000
2000
04:56
are saving保存 enough足夠.
113
281000
3000
04:59
Nine out of 10
114
284000
2000
05:01
either cannot不能 save保存 through通過 their 401(k) plan計劃,
115
286000
3000
05:04
decide決定 not to save保存 -- or don't decide決定 --
116
289000
3000
05:07
or save保存 too little.
117
292000
3000
05:10
We think we have a problem問題
118
295000
2000
05:12
of people saving保存 too much.
119
297000
2000
05:14
Let's look at that.
120
299000
2000
05:16
We have one person --
121
301000
2000
05:18
well, actually其實 we're going to slice him in half
122
303000
3000
05:21
because it's less than one percent百分.
123
306000
3000
05:24
Roughly大致 half a percent百分 of Americans美國人
124
309000
3000
05:27
feel that they save保存 too much.
125
312000
5000
05:32
What are we going to do about it?
126
317000
2000
05:34
That's what I really want to focus焦點 on.
127
319000
2000
05:36
We have to understand理解
128
321000
2000
05:38
why people are not saving保存,
129
323000
2000
05:40
and then we can hopefully希望 flip翻動
130
325000
2000
05:46
and then see how powerful強大 it might威力 be.
133
331000
3000
05:49
So let me divert轉移 for a second第二
134
334000
2000
05:51
as we're going to identify鑑定 the problems問題,
135
336000
2000
05:53
the challenges挑戰, the behavioral行為的 challenges挑戰,
136
338000
3000
05:56
that prevent避免 people from saving保存.
137
341000
2000
05:58
I'm going to divert轉移 and talk about bananas香蕉 and chocolate巧克力.
138
343000
4000
06:02
Suppose假設 we had another另一個 wonderful精彩 TEDTED event事件 next下一個 week.
139
347000
3000
06:05
And during the break打破
140
350000
2000
06:07
there would be a snack小吃
141
352000
2000
06:09
and you could choose選擇 bananas香蕉 or chocolate巧克力.
142
354000
2000
06:11
How many許多 of you think you would like to have bananas香蕉
143
356000
3000

06:16
Who would go for bananas
145
361000
2000
06:18
Wonderful
146
363000
2000
不錯
06:20
I predict預測 scientifically科學
147
365000
2000
06:22
74 percent百分 of you will go for bananas香蕉.
148
367000
3000

06:30
And then count計數 down the days
150

3000
06:33
and see what people ended結束 up eating.

What does it have to do with time and savings,

this issue問題 of immediate即時 gratification享樂?
161

07:04
Or as some economists經濟學家 call it, present當下 bias偏壓.
162
409000
4000
07:08

07:18
So this issue問題 of present當下 bias偏壓
167
423000

Not many許多 people like checking檢查 boxes盒子.
185
466000
2000
08:03
It takes effort功夫. You need to think.
186
468000
2000
08:05

187

08:08

08:26
if you do not want to donate your organ器官.
196
491000
4000
08:32
That's kind of too much effort
198
497000
2000
08:34
One percent百分 check the box. The rest休息 do nothing.
199
499000
3000
08:37
Doing nothing is very common共同.
200
502000
2000
08:39
Not many許多 people check boxes盒子.
201
504000
3000
08:42
What are the implications啟示

08:46
and having organs器官 available可得到?
204
511000
3000
08:49
In Germany德國, 12 percent百分 check the box.
205
514000
2000
08:54
Huge巨大 shortage短缺 of organs器官,
207
519000
2000
08:56
God forbid禁止, if you need one.
208
521000
2000
08:58
In Austria奧地利, again, nobody沒有人 checks檢查 the box.
209
523000
3000
09:01
Therefore因此, 99 percent百分 of people

526000
3000

215
537000
3000

09:15
Very powerful強大.
216
540000
2000
09:17
We're going to talk
217
542000
2000
09:19
about what happens發生 if people are overwhelmed不堪重負 and scared害怕
218
544000
4000

09:26
Are we going to make them automatically自動 join加入 the plan計劃,
220
551000
3000
09:29
or are they going to be left out?
221
554000
2000
09:31
In too many許多 401(k) plans計劃,
222
556000
3000
09:34
if people do nothing,
223
559000
2000
09:36
it means手段 they're not saving保存 for retirement退休,
224
561000
3000
09:39
if they don't check the box.
225
564000
2000
09:41
And checking檢查 the box takes effort功夫.
226
566000
3000
09:44
So we've我們已經 chatted about a couple一對 of behavioral行為的 challenges挑戰.
227
569000
3000
09:47
One more before we flip翻動 the challenges挑戰 into solutions解決方案,
228
572000
3000
09:50
having to do with monkeys猴子 and apples蘋果.
229
575000
2000
09:52
No, no, no, this is a real真實 study研究
230
577000
2000
09:54
and it's got a lot to do with behavioral行為的 economics經濟學.
231
579000
4000
09:58
One group of monkeys猴子 gets得到 an apple蘋果, they're pretty漂亮 happy快樂.
232
583000
3000
10:01
The other group gets得到 two apples蘋果, one is taken採取 away.
233
586000
2000
10:03
They still have an apple蘋果 left.
234
588000
2000
10:05
They're really mad.
235
590000
3000
10:08
Why have you taken採取 our apple蘋果?
236
593000
3000
10:11
This is the notion概念 of loss失利 aversion厭惡.
237
596000
3000
10:14
We hate討厭 losing失去 stuff東東,
238
599000
2000
10:16
even if it doesn't mean a lot of risk風險.
239
601000
3000
10:19
You would hate討厭 to go to the ATM自動取款機,
240
604000
3000
10:22
take out 100 dollars美元
241
607000
2000
10:24
and notice注意 that you lost丟失 one of those $20 bills票據.
242
609000
2000
10:26
It's very painful
243
611000
2000
10:28
even though雖然 it doesn't mean anything.
244
613000
2000
10:30
Those 20 dollars美元 might威力 have been a quick lunch午餐.
245
615000
4000
10:34
So this notion概念 of loss失利 aversion厭惡
246
619000
4000
10:38
kicks in when it comes to savings too,
247
623000
3000
10:41
because people, mentally精神上
248
626000
2000
10:43
and emotionally感情上 and intuitively直觀地
249
628000
3000
10:46
frame savings as a loss失利
250
631000
2000
10:48
because I have to cut my spending開支.
251
633000
3000
10:51
So we talked about
252
636000
2000
10:53
all sorts排序 of behavioral行為的 challenges挑戰
253
638000
2000
10:55
having to do with savings eventually終於.
254
640000
4000
10:59
Whether是否 you think about immediate即時 gratification享樂,
255
644000
3000
11:02
and the chocolates巧克力 versus bananas香蕉,
256
647000
3000
11:05
it's just painful痛苦 to save保存 now.
257
650000
3000
11:08
It's a lot more fun
258
653000
2000
11:10
to spend now.
259
655000
2000
11:12
We talked about inertia慣性 and organ器官 donations捐款
260
657000
3000
11:15
and checking檢查 the box.
261
660000
2000
11:17
If people have to check a lot of boxes盒子
262
662000
2000
11:19
to join加入 a 401(k) plan計劃,
263
664000
2000
11:21
they're going to keep procrastinating拖延
264
666000
2000
11:23
and not join加入.
265
668000
2000
11:25
And last, we talked about loss失利 aversion厭惡,
266
670000
2000
11:27
and the monkeys猴子 and the apples蘋果.
267
672000
2000
11:29
If people frame mentally精神上
268
674000
3000
11:32
saving保存 for retirement退休 as a loss失利,
269
677000
3000
11:35
they're not going to be saving保存 for retirement退休.
270
680000
3000
11:38
So we've我們已經 got these challenges挑戰,
271
683000
2000
11:40
and what Richard理查德 Thaler泰勒 and I
272
685000
2000
11:42
were always fascinated入迷 by --
273
687000
2000

11:46
make it behavioral行為的 finance金融 on steroids類固醇
275
691000
2000
11:50
or behavioral行為的 finance金融 in action行動 --
277
695000
2000
11:52
flip翻動 the challenges挑戰 into solutions解決方案.
278
697000
4000
11:56
And we came來了 up with an embarrassingly尷尬 simple簡單 solution
279
701000
3000
11:59
called Save保存 More, not today今天, Tomorrow明天.
280
704000
4000
12:03
How is it going to solve解決 the challenges挑戰
281
708000
2000
12:05
we chatted about?
282
710000
2000
12:07
If you think about the problem問題
283
712000
2000
12:09
of bananas香蕉 versus chocolates巧克力,
284
714000
2000
12:11
we think we're going to eat bananas香蕉 next下一個 week.
285
716000
3000
12:14
We think we're going to save保存 more next下一個 year.
286
719000
3000
12:17
Save保存 More Tomorrow明天
287

12:20

12:36
Now we also talked about checking檢查 the box
295
741000
3000
12:39
and the difficulty困難 of taking服用 action行動.
296
744000
3000
12:42
Save保存 More Tomorrow明天

12:46

299

12:48
Once一旦 you tell me you would like to save保存 more in the future未來,
300
753000
4000
12:54
you're going to be saving保存 more automatically自動
302
759000
3000
12:57
and it's going to go away from your paycheck薪水 to the 401(k) plan計劃
303
762000
3000
13:00
before you see it, before you touch觸摸 it,
304
765000
2000
13:02
before you get the issue問題
305
767000
2000
13:04
of immediate即時 gratification享樂.
306
769000
3000
13:07
But what are we going to do about the monkeys猴子
307
772000
3000
13:10
and loss失利 aversion厭惡?
308
775000
2000
13:14
and people might威力 feel that if they save保存 more,
310

2000
13:16
they have to spend less, and that's painful痛苦.
311
781000
3000
13:20
Well, maybe it shouldn't不能 be just January一月.
312
785000
2000
13:22
Maybe we should make people save保存 more
313
