ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Doris Kim Sung - Architect
Doris Kim Sung is a biology student turned architect interested in thermo-bimetals, smart materials that respond dynamically to temperature change.

Why you should listen

Architect Doris Kim Sung asks: Why can't building materials be more adaptable? Why can't they function more like clothing, or even human skin? Having studied biology at Princeton University intending to go to medical school, Sung applies principles of biology to her work as an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Southern California. She explores architecture as an extension of the body, challenging the notion that buildings ought to be static and climate-controlled. Rather, they should be able to adapt to their environment through self-ventilation. In November 2011, Sung exhibited her art installation "Bloom" in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. The installation is 20 feet tall and made with 14,000 completely unique pieces of thermo-bimetal, a smart material made of two different metals laminated together. This metal is dynamic and responsive, curling as air temperatures rise, resulting in a beautiful sculpture that breathes.

If we look at biologybiologie, and manyveel of you probablywaarschijnlijk don't know,

Kijk naar biologie.
Waarschijnlijk weten jullie niet

I was a biologybiologie majorgroot before I wentgegaan into architecturearchitectuur,

dat ik biologie heb gestudeerd

02:44
the humanmenselijk skinhuid is the organorgaan that naturallyvan nature regulatesregelt

and so what I proposevoorstellen is that our buildinggebouw skinsskins
50
165671

Mijn voorstel is dat de huid van onze gebouwen
03:04
should be more similarsoortgelijk to humanmenselijk skinhuid,
51
168175

meer op de menselijke huid moet lijken.
03:07
and by doing so can be much more dynamicdynamisch, responsivesympathiek

Daardoor kan ze dynamischer zijn,

And this getskrijgt me back to my researchOnderzoek.

Dat brengt me terug bij mijn onderzoek.
03:17
What I proposedvoorgestelde first doing is looking at a differentverschillend materialmateriaal palettepalet to do that.
55
181125
5310
Ik ging eerst op zoek

03:22
I presentlydadelijk, or currentlymomenteel, work with smartslim materialsmaterialen,

Ik werk op dit moment

en slim thermo-bimetaal.
03:26
First of all, I guessraden we call it smartslim because it requiresvereist
58
191065
2912
We noemen het slim
03:29
no controlscontrols and it requiresvereist no energyenergie,
59
193977

omdat het zonder regeling
en zonder energie werkt.
03:32
and that's a very biggroot dealtransactie for architecturearchitectuur.
60
196707
2663
Dat is erg belangrijk in architectuur.
03:35
What it is, it's a laminationlamineren of two differentverschillend metalsmetalen togethersamen.
61
199370

Het is een laminaat

You can see that here by the differentverschillend reflectionreflectie on this sidekant.
62

Je ziet dat hier door de verschillende reflectie

03:41
And because it has two differentverschillend coefficientscoëfficiënten of expansionuitbreiding,

04:35
and in other areasgebieden, it's a ventilatingventileren systemsysteem,

Elders is het een ventilatiesysteem,

You can see here in this time-lapsetime-lapse videovideo- that the sunzon,

Keep in mindgeest, with the digitaldigitaal technologytechnologie that we have todayvandaag,

Onthou dat we dit

Ze zijn allemaal verschillend.
05:04
And the great thing with that is the factfeit that we can calibratekalibreren
87
288477

Het geweldige is dat we kunnen kalibreren

05:31
It's still with that glassglas boxdoos because we still want that visualzichtbaar accesstoegang,

Het is nog steeds een glazen doos,
want we willen visuele toegang,
05:35
but now it's sheathedommanteld with this thermo-bimetalThermo-bimetal layerlaag,
97

05:46
In additiontoevoeging to that, it can alsoook screenscherm areasgebieden for privacyprivacy,
100
330298

Bovendien kan het ruimtes afschermen

05:55
And what it basicallyeigenlijk impliesimpliceert is that, in houseshuizen now,
103
339748

Dat betekent dat we vandaag in huizen
05:58
we don't need drapesgordijnen or shuttersrolluiken or blindsjaloezieën anymoremeer
104
343011
3417
geen gordijnen of rolluiken of stores nodig hebben
06:02
because we can sheathschede the buildinggebouw with these things,
105
346428

omdat we het gebouw hiermee kunnen inpakken
06:04
as well as controlcontrole the amountbedrag of airlucht conditioningconditioning you need insidebinnen that buildinggebouw.
