Tavi Gevinson: A teen just trying to figure it out

Tavi Gevinson: uma adolescente apenas tentando entender

Filmed:

00:18
I started a fashion blog called Style Rookie.

3096
00:21
Last September of 2011, I started an online magazine

00:25
for teenage girls called Rookiemag.com.

para garotas adolescentes chamada Rookiemag.com.
00:29
My name's Tavi Gevinson, and
4

4191
Meu nome é Tavi Gevinson, e
00:33
the title of my talk is "Still Figuring It Out,"
5
17845
3140
o título da minha palestra é "Ainda descobrindo",
00:36
and the MS Paint quality of my slides
6
20985
2247
e a qualidade MS Paint dos meus slides
00:39
was a total creative decision in keeping with today's theme,
7
23232
3312
00:42
and has nothing to do with my inability
8
26544
1616
00:44
to use PowerPoint. (Laughter)
9
28160
3345
de usar o PowerPoint. (Risos)
00:47
So I edit this site for teenage girls. I'm a feminist.
10
31505
4560
00:51
I am kind of a pop culture nerd, and I think a lot about
11
36065
2871
00:54
what makes a strong female character,
12
38936
2416
o que faz uma personagem feminina forte,
00:57
and, you know, movies and TV shows,
13
41352
2088
a, você sabe, filmes e séries de TV,
00:59
these things have influence. My own website.
14
43440
4266
estas coisas têm influência. Meu próprio site.
01:03
So I think the question of what makes a strong female
15
47706
2791
01:06
character often goes misinterpreted,
16
50497
2377
frequentemente é mal interpretada,
01:08
and instead we get these two-dimensional superwomen
17
52874
3293
e então nós temos estas super mulheres bidimensionais
01:12
who maybe have one quality that's played up a lot,
18
56167
3592
01:15
like a Catwoman type,
19
59759
2593
estilo a Mulher Gato,
01:18
or she plays her sexuality up a lot,
20
62352
3878
ou ela usa bastante sua sexualidade,
01:22
and it's seen as power.
21
66230
1192
e isto é visto como poder.
01:23
But they're not strong characters who happen to be female.
22
67422
3399
01:26
They're completely flat,
23
70821
1728
Elas são completamente achatadas
01:28
and they're basically cardboard characters.
24
72549
2484
elas são basicamente personagens de cartolina.
01:30
The problem with this is that then
25
75033
1817
O problema disto é que então
01:32
people expect women to be that easy to understand,
26
76866
3846
as pessoas esperam que as mulheres sejam assim tão fáceis de entender,
01:36
and women are mad at themselves
27
80712
2327
01:38
for not being that simple,
28
83039
1342
por não serem tão simples,
01:40
when, in actuality, women are complicated,
29
84381
2957
quando, na verdade, as mulheres são complicadas,
01:43
women are multifaceted -- not because women are crazy,
30
87338
3398
01:46
but because people are crazy,
31
90736
1752
mas porque as pessoas são loucas,
01:48
and women happen to be people. (Laughter)
32
92488
3662
e as mulheres por acaso são pessoas. (Risos)
01:52
So the flaws are the key.
33
96150
2270
Então as falhas são a chave.
01:54
I'm not the first person to say this.
34
98435
1843
Eu não sou a primeira pessoa a dizer isto.
01:56
What makes a strong female character
35
100278
2048
O que faz uma personagem feminina forte
01:58
is a character who has weaknesses, who has flaws,
36
102326
4904
é uma personagem com fraquezas, com falhas,
02:03
who is maybe not immediately likable,
37
107230
1984
que talvez não seja imediatamente amável,
02:05
but eventually relatable.
38
109214
2462
mas eventualmente relacionável.
02:07
I don't like to acknowledge a problem
39
111676
1469
Eu não gosto de reconhecer um problema
02:09
without also acknowledging those who work to fix it,
40
113145
2666
02:11
so just wanted to acknowledge shows like "Mad Men,"
41
115811
3067
então só quero reconhecer séries como "Mad Men",
02:14
movies like "Bridesmaids," whose female characters
42
118878
2880
filmes como "Damas de Honra", onde as personagens femininas
02:17
or protagonists are complex, multifaceted.
43
121758
4131
ou protagonistas são complexas, multifacetadas.
02:21
Lena Dunham, who's on here, her show on HBO
44
125889
4216
02:26
that premiers next month, "Girls,"
45
130105
2191
estréia no próximo mês, "Girls",
02:28
she said she wanted to start it because she felt that
46
132296
2517
02:30
every woman she knew was just a bundle of contradictions,
47
134813
2988
02:33
and that feels accurate for all people,
48
137801
2208
02:35
but you don't see women represented like that as much.
49
140009
2664
02:38
Congrats, guys. (Laughs)
50
142673
3584
Parabéns, caras. (Risos)
02:42
But I don't feel that — I still feel that there are some types
51
146257
3703
02:45
of women who are not represented that way,
52
149960
2536
02:48
and one group that we'll focus on today are teens,
53
152496
2456
02:50
because I think teenagers are especially contradictory
54
154952
3280
02:54
and still figuring it out,
55
158232
3040
e ainda estão se descobrindo,
02:57
and in the '90s there was "Freaks and Geeks"
56
161272
3349
e nos anos 90 existia "Freaks and Geeks"
03:00
and "My So-Called Life," and their characters,
57
164621
2779
e "My So-Called Life", e suas personagens,
03:03
Lindsay Weir and Angela Chase,
58
167400
2656
Lindsay Weir e Angela Chace,
03:05
I mean, the whole premise of the shows
59
170056
2688
quero dizer, a premissa das séries
03:08
were just them trying to figure themselves out, basically,
60
172744
3446
03:12
but those shows only lasted a season each,
61
176190
3098
03:15
and I haven't really seen anything like that on TV since.
62
179288
4962
03:20
So this is a scientific diagram of my brain — (Laughter) —
63
184250
6386
03:26
around the time when I was,
64
190636
1457
na época em que eu estava,
03:28
when I started watching those TV shows.
65
192108
2642
em que eu comecei assistindo aquelas séries.
03:30
I was ending middle school, starting high school --
66
194750
2195
Eu estava terminando o colegial, começando o ensino médio -
03:32
I'm a sophomore now —
67
196945
2264
Eu sou uma estudante universitária agora -
03:35
and I was trying to reconcile
68
199209
2756
e eu estava tentando reconciliar
03:37
all of these differences that you're told you can't be
69
201965
2659
03:40
when you're growing up as a girl.
70
204624
1347
quando você está crescendo como uma garota.
03:41
You can't be smart and pretty.
71
205971
2620
Você não pode ser inteligente e bonita.
03:44
You can't be a feminist who's also interested in fashion.
72
208591
2823
03:47
You can't care about clothes if it's not for the sake
73
211414
3894
03:51
of what other people, usually men, will think of you.
74
215308
3033
do que as outras pessoas, normalmente homens, pensam de você.
03:54
So I was trying to figure all that out,
75
218341
2971
Então eu estava tentando entender tudo aquilo,
03:57
and I felt a little confused,
76
221312
3301
e eu me senti um pouco confusa,
04:00
and I said so on my blog,
77
224613
1742
e eu disse isto no meu blog,
04:02
and I said that I wanted to start
78
226355
4185
e eu disse que eu queria começar
04:06
a website for teenage girls
79
230540
2504
um site para garotas adolescentes
04:08
that was not this kind of one-dimensional
80
233044
3438
que não fosse tivesse esse empoderamento de
04:12
strong character empowerment thing
81
236482
2704
personagens femininas fortes de uma dimensão
04:15
because I think one thing that can be very alienating
82
239186
2990
04:18
about a misconception of feminism is that
83
242176
2632
04:20
girls then think that to be a feminist, they have to live up to
84
244808
3595
04:24
being perfectly consistent in your beliefs,
85
248403
2491
sendo perfeitamente consistente em suas crenças,
04:26
never being insecure, never having doubts,
86
250894
3411
nunca sendo inseguras, nunca tendo dúvidas,
04:30
having all of the answers. And this is not true,
87
254305
2902
tendo todas as respostas. E isto não é verdade,
04:33
and, actually, reconciling all the contradictions I was feeling
88
257207
4053
04:37
became easier once I understood that feminism
89
261260
3743
04:40
was not a rulebook but a discussion,
90
265019
2187
04:43
a conversation, a process,
91
267206
2124
uma conversa, um processo,
04:45
and this is a spread from a zine that I made last year
92
269330
3171
04:48
when I -- I mean, I think I've let myself go a bit
93
272501
3350
quando eu - quer dizer, eu acho que eu me deixei levar
04:51
on the illustration front since.
94
275851
2103
pela ilustração desde então.
04:53
But, yeah.
95
277954
3974
Mas, sim.
04:57
So I said on my blog that I wanted to start this publication
96
281944
4399
05:02
for teenage girls and ask people to submit
97
286343
2489
05:04
their writing, their photography, whatever,
98
288832
2105
05:06
to be a member of our staff.
99
290952
1651
para ser um membro da nossa equipe.
05:08
I got about 3,000 emails.
100
292603
2924
Eu recebi aproximadamente 3.000 e-mails.
05:11
My editorial director and I went through them and
101
295527
2672
Meu diretor de editorial e eu
05:14
put together a staff of people,
102
298199
3003
então juntamos um equipe,
05:17
and we launched last September.
103
301202
2600
e nós lançamos setembro passado.
05:19
And this is an excerpt from my first editor's letter,
104
303802
2355
05:22
where I say that Rookie, we don't have all the answers,
105
306157
3354
05:25
we're still figuring it out too, but the point is not to
106
309511
2729
05:28
give girls the answers, and not even give them permission
107
312240
3959
05:32
to find the answers themselves,
108
316199
2574
para achar as respostas por elas mesmas,
05:34
but hopefully inspire them to understand that
109
318773
2168
05:36
they can give themselves that permission,
110
320941
1723
05:38
they can ask their own questions, find their own answers,
111
322664
2884
05:41
all of that, and Rookie, I think we've been trying to make it
112
325548
2751
tudo isto, e Rookie, eu acho que nós temos tentado fazer
05:44
a nice place for all of that to be figured out.
113
328299
5343
05:49
So I'm not saying, "Be like us,"
114
333642
1935
05:51
and "We're perfect role models," because we're not,
115
335577
2368
e "Nós somos modelos perfeitos", porque nós não somos,
05:53
but we just want to help represent girls
116
337945
5112
05:58
in a way that shows those different dimensions.
117
343057
3021
06:01
I mean, we have articles called
118
346078
3794
Eu quero dizer, nós temos artigos chamados
06:05
"On Taking Yourself Seriously: How to Not Care What People Think of You,"
119
349872
3182
"Sobre levar você mesma à sério: Como não se importar com o que as outras pessoas pensam de você",
06:08
but we also have articles like,
120
353054
1967
mas nós também temos artigos como,
06:10
oops -- I'm figuring it out!
121
355021
3961
opa - Eu estou descobrindo!
06:14
Ha ha. (Laughter)
122
358982
2526
Ha ha. (Risos)
06:17
If you use that, you can get away with anything.
123
361508
3798
Se você usar isto, você consegue qualquer coisa.
06:21
We also have articles called
124
365306
1191
Nós também temos artigos chamados
06:22
"How to Look Like You Weren't Just Crying in Less than Five Minutes."
125
366497
3506
"Como parecer que você não estava chorando em menos de cinco minutos".
06:25
So all of that being said, I still really appreciate
126
370003
3033
06:28
those characters in movies and
127
373036
3967
aquelas personagens em filmes e
06:32
articles like that on our site,
128
377003
1813
artigos como aqueles em nosso site,
06:34
that aren't just about being totally powerful,
129
378816
3243
06:37
maybe finding your acceptance with yourself
130
382059
3050
talvez achando aceitação com você mesma
06:41
and self-esteem and your flaws and how you accept those.
131
385109
5559
06:46
So what I you to take away from my talk,
132
390668
3618
06:50
the lesson of all of this, is to just be Stevie Nicks.
133
394286
4222
06:54
Like, that's all you have to do. (Laughter)
134
398508
3374
(Risos)
06:57
Because my favorite thing about her,
135
401882
2879
Porque a minha coisa favorita sobre ela,
07:00
other than, like, everything, is that
136
404761
3060
além de, tipo, tudo, é que
07:03
she is very -- has always been
137
407821
2408
ela é muito - e sempre tem sido
07:06
unapologetically present on stage,
138
410229
2905
indesculpavelmente presente no palco,
07:09
and unapologetic about her flaws
139
413134
2807
e indesculpável sobre suas falhas
07:11
and about reconciling all of her contradictory feelings
140
415941
4138
07:15
and she makes you listen to them and think about them,
141
420079
3592
07:19
and yeah, so please be Stevie Nicks.
142
423671
1382
e sim, então por favor sejam Stevie Nicks.
07:20
Thank you. (Applause)
143
425053
5098
Obrigada. (Aplausos)

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tavi Gevinson - Blogger and fashion icon
Tavi Gevinson is a fashion blogger and a feminist who encourages everyone to embrace their complexity and look cool doing it.

Why you should listen
