ABOUT THE SPEAKER
George Whitesides - Chemist
In his legendary career in chemistry, George Whitesides has been a pioneer in microfabrication and nanoscale self-assembly. Now, he's fabbing a diagnostic lab on a chip.

Why you should listen

Someday Harvard chemistry professor George Whitesides will take the time to look back on the 950 scientific articles he's coauthored, the dozen companies he's co-founded or the 50-plus patents on which he's named. (He works in four main areas: biochemistry, materials science, catalysis and physical organic chemistry.) In the meantime, he's trying to invent a future where medical diagnosis can be done by anyone for little or no cost. He's co-founded a nonprofit called Diagnostics for All that aims to provide dirt-cheap diagnostic devices, to provide healthcare in a world where cost is everything.

Among his solutions is a low-cost "lab-on-a-chip," made of paper and carpet tape. The paper wicks bodily fluids -- urine, for example -- and turns color to provide diagnostic information, such as how much glucose or protein is present. His goal is to distribute these simple paper diagnostic systems to developing countries, where people with basic training can administer tests and send results to distant doctors via cameraphone.

03:18
So, this is an exampleexemplu of a devicedispozitiv madefăcut from a simplesimplu piecebucată of paperhârtie.
64
183000
3000
03:21
Now, how simplesimplu can you make the productionproducere?
65
186000
3000
03:24
Why do we choosealege paperhârtie?
66
189000
2000
De ce am ales hârtia?
03:26
There's an exampleexemplu of the samela fel thing on a fingerdeget,

3000

03:31
One reasonmotiv for usingutilizând paperhârtie is that it's everywherepretutindeni.
69
196000
3000
03:34
We have madefăcut these kindstipuri of devicesdispozitive usingutilizând

03:41
So, the productionproducere capabilitycapacitate is there.
73
206000
3000
Deci capacitatea de producţie există.
03:44
The secondal doilea is, you can put lots and lots
74
209000
2000
Al doilea e că poţi pune multe multe
03:46

03:48
I'll showspectacol you in a momentmoment that the stackgrămadă of paperhârtie there

03:50
would probablyprobabil holddeține something like
77
215000
2000
ar conţine probabil ceva de genul
03:52
100,000 teststeste, something of that kinddrăguț.
78
217000
3000
100.000 de teste, aproximativ.
03:55
And then finallyin sfarsit, a pointpunct that you don't think of so much
79
220000
3000
03:58
in developeddezvoltat worldlume medicinemedicament:
80
223000
3000
în lumea dezvoltată a medicinei,
04:01
it eliminateselimină sharpsspărturi.
81
226000
2000
e că elimină obiectele ascuţite.
04:03
And what sharpsspărturi meansmijloace is needlesAce, things that stickbăț.
82
228000
3000
Obiecte ascuţite înseamnă ace, obiecte care înţeapă.
04:06
If you've takenluate a sampleprobă of someone'se cineva bloodsânge
83
231000
2000
Dacă ai luat o mostră de sânge a cuiva
04:08
and the someonecineva mightar putea have hepatitisHepatita C,
84
233000
3000
şi acela ar putea avea hepatită C,
04:11
you don't want to make a mistakegreşeală and stickbăț it in you.
85
236000
2000
04:13
It just -- you don't want to do that.
86
238000
2000
04:15
So, how do you disposedispune of that? It's a problemproblemă everywherepretutindeni.
87
240000
2000
Deci, cum poţi să scapi de astea? Constituie o problemă peste tot.
04:17
And here you simplypur şi simplu burna arde it.
88
242000
2000
Aici pur şi simplu arzi hârtia.
04:19
So, it's a sortfel of a practicalpractic approachabordare
89
244000
2000
Deci, e un fel de abordare pragmatică
04:21
to startingpornire on things.
90
246000
3000
asupra începerii lucrurilor.
04:24
Now, you say, "If paperhârtie is a good ideaidee,
91
249000
3000
Acum, aţi putea spune, dacă hârtia e o idee bună,
04:27
other people have surelycu siguranţă thought of it."
92
252000
2000
04:29
And the answerRăspuns is, of coursecurs, yes.
93
254000
3000
Şi răspunsul e, desigur, da.
04:32
Those halfjumătate of you, roughlyaproximativ,
94
257000
2000
Acea jumătate dintre dumneavoastră, în mare,
04:34
who are womenfemei,
95
259000
2000
care sunteţi femei,
04:36
at some pointpunct mayMai have had a pregnancysarcina testTest.
96
261000
2000
04:38
And the mostcel mai commoncomun of these
97
263000
3000
Şi cel mai obişnuit dintre acestea
04:41
is in a devicedispozitiv that looksarată like the thing on the left.
98
266000
3000
04:44
It's something calleddenumit a laterallateral flowcurgere immunoassayimunodozare.
99
269000
2000
04:46
In that particularspecial testTest,
100
271000
2000
Şi, în acel test despre care vorbeam,
04:48
urineurină eitherfie, containingcare conţin
101
273000
2000
urina, care conţine sau nu
04:50
a hormonehormon calleddenumit HCGHCG, does or does not
102
275000
3000
un hormon numit HCG fie se absoarbe
04:53
flowcurgere acrosspeste a piecebucată of paperhârtie.
103
278000
2000
fie nu, pe o bucată de hârtie.
04:55
And there are two barsbaruri. One barbar indicatesindică that the testTest is workinglucru,
104
280000
4000
Există două bare. Una indică faptul că testul funcţionează.
04:59
and if the secondal doilea barbar showsspectacole up, you're pregnantgravidă.
105
284000
3000
Dacă apare şi a doua bară, înseamnă că sunteţi gravidă.
05:02
This is a terrificteribil kinddrăguț of testTest in a binarybinar worldlume,
106
287000
3000
05:05
and the nicefrumos thing about pregnancysarcina
107
290000
2000
Ce e drăguţ legat de sarcină
05:07
is eitherfie you are pregnantgravidă or you're not pregnantgravidă.
108
292000
2000
e că ori eşti însărcinată, ori nu.
05:09
You're not partiallyparţial pregnantgravidă or thinkinggândire about beingfiind pregnantgravidă
109
294000
2000
05:11
or something of that sortfel.
110
296000
2000
sau ceva de genul ăsta.
05:13
So, it workslucrări very well there,
111
298000
2000
Deci, în acest caz funcţionează foarte bine.
05:15
but it doesn't work very well when you need more quantitativecantitativ informationinformație.
112
300000
3000
05:18
There are alsode asemenea dipsticksdipsticks,
113
303000
2000
Există şi fâşii de hârtie.
05:20
but if you look at the dipsticksdipsticks, they're for
114
305000
2000
05:22
anothero alta kinddrăguț of urineurină analysisanaliză.
115
307000
2000
un alt tip de analiză a urinei.
05:24
There are an awfulîngrozitor lot of colorscolorate and things like that.
116
309000
3000
05:27
What do you actuallyde fapt do about that in a difficultdificil circumstancecircumstanţă?
117
312000
3000
05:30
So, the approachabordare that we starteda început with is to askcere:
118
315000
5000
05:35
Is it really practicalpractic to make things of this sortfel?
119
320000
4000
05:39
And that problemproblemă is now, in a purelypur engineeringInginerie way, solvedrezolvat.
120
324000
4000
05:43
And the procedureprocedură that we have is simplypur şi simplu to startstart with paperhârtie.
121
328000
4000
05:47
You runalerga it throughprin a newnou kinddrăguț of printerimprimantă calleddenumit a waxceara printerimprimantă.
