ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Pierre Barreau - AI and music entrepreneur
Pierre Barreau is an entrepreneur, computer scientist, composer and director who loves to create impactful things.

Why you should listen

Pierre Barreau is the CEO of AIVA, an artificial intelligence that composes music. As Barreau writes: "Ever since I was a child, I was always passionate about building things. This drive to make the imaginary real is what pushed me to create a company as soon as I got out of university. The seed of the idea for AIVA was planted once I saw the science fiction movie Her, where an AI composes a beautiful piece of piano that captures the essence of the moment she is currently living. This simple concept of creating an artificial intelligence capable of composing personalized music is how I believe that I can make the world a slightly more magical place and meaningfully support the storytelling of content creators through music."

Pierre was nominated for a Gold Panda Award in the "Best Director" category when he was 15 years old for a four-film documentary series, One Night in the Cosmos.

00:44
Her name名称 is AIVA利雅华柏芬毕克,
and she's an artificial人造 intelligence情报
9
32847
3488
00:48
that has learned学到了 the art艺术
of music音乐 composition组成
10
36359
2393
00:50
by reading over 30,000 scores分数
of history's历史上 greatest最大.

00:54
So here's这里的 what one score得分了
looks容貌 like to the algorithm算法
12

2456
00:56
in a matrix-like矩阵式 representation表示.
13
44645
2202
00:58
And here's这里的 what 30,000 scores分数,
14
46871
2246
01:01
written书面 by the likes喜欢

01:03
look like in a single frame.
16
51261

01:07
So, using运用 deep neural神经 networks网络,
AIVA利雅华柏芬毕克 looks容貌 for patterns模式 in the scores分数.
17
55609
4340
01:12
And from a couple一对 of bars酒吧
of existing现有 music音乐,

3563
01:15
it actually其实 tries尝试 to infer推断 what notes笔记
should come next下一个 in those tracks轨道.
19
63847
3708
01:19
And once一旦 AIVA利雅华柏芬毕克 gets得到 good
at those predictions预测,
20
67887
2498
01:22
it can actually其实 build建立 a set
01:26
for that style样式 of music音乐
22
74046
1166
01:27
in order订购 to create创建
its own拥有 original原版的 compositions成分.
23
75236
2788
01:30
And in a way, this is kind of
how we, humans人类, compose撰写 music音乐, too.
24
78490
3709
01:34
It's a trial-and-error试错 process处理,
25
82561
1492
01:36
during which哪一个 we may可能 not
get the right notes笔记 all the time.
26
84077
3008
01:39
But we can correct正确 ourselves我们自己,
27
87109
1389
01:40
either with our musical音乐 ear
or our musical音乐 knowledge知识.
28
88522
3293
01:45
But for AIVA利雅华柏芬毕克, this process处理
is taken采取 from years年份 and years年份 of learning学习,
29
93495
4143
01:49
decades几十年 of learning学习 as an artist艺术家,
as a musician音乐家 and a composer作曲家,
30
97662
3262
01:52
down to a couple一对 of hours小时.
31
100948
1733
01:55
But music音乐 is also a supersubjectivesupersubjective art艺术.
32
103030
2880
01:57
And we needed需要 to teach AIVA利雅华柏芬毕克
33
105934
1564
01:59
how to compose撰写 the right music音乐
for the right person,
34
107522
2445
02:01
because people have different不同 preferences优先.
35
109991
2141
02:04
And to do that, we show显示 to the algorithm算法
over 30 different不同 category类别 labels标签
36
112156
4190
02:08
for each score得分了 in our database数据库.
37
116370
1945
02:10
So those category类别 labels标签 are like mood心情
38
118339
2516
02:12
or note注意 density密度 or composer作曲家
style样式 of a piece
39
120879
2920
02:15
or the epoch时代 during which哪一个 it was written书面.
40
123823
2524
02:18
And by seeing眼看 all this data数据,
41
126371
1935
to very precise精确 requirements要求.
42
128330
3056
02:23
Like the ones那些, for example,
we had for a project项目 recently最近,
43
131966
3103
02:27
where we were commissioned委托
to create创建 a piece
44
135093
3035
02:30
that would be reminiscent让人联想起
of a science-fiction科幻小说 film电影 soundtrack声带.
45
138152
3027
02:33
And the piece that was created创建
is called "Among其中 the Stars明星"
46
141839
4500
02:38
and it was recorded记录
with CMGCMG Orchestra乐队 in Hollywood好莱坞,

02:43

03:42
So, as you've seen看到, AIAI can create创建
beautiful美丽 pieces of music音乐,
55
210001
4055
03:46
and the best最好 part部分 of it
56
214080
1803
03:47
is that humans人类 can actually其实
bring带来 them to life.
57
215907
2581
03:51
And it's not the first time in history历史
58
219506
1838
03:53
that technology技术 has augmented增强
03:56
Live生活 music音乐 was almost几乎 always
used in silent无声 films影片
60
224736
3072
03:59
to augment增加 the experience经验.
61
227832
1666
04:01
But the problem问题 with live生活 music音乐
is that it didn't scale规模.
62
229522
3182
04:04
It's really hard to cram填满 a full充分 symphony交响乐
into a small theater剧院,
63
232728
3429
04:08
and it's really hard to do that
for every一切 theater剧院 in the world世界.
64
236181
2991
04:11
So when music音乐 recording记录
was actually其实 invented发明,
65
239196
2849
04:16
to have prerecorded预录 and original原版的 music音乐
67
244442
2786
04:19
tailored量身定制 to each and every一切 frame
of their stories故事.
68
247252
2873
04:22
And that was really
an enhancer增强 of creativity创造力.
69
250149
2626
04:26
Two and a half years年份 ago,
when I watched看着 this movie电影 "Her,"
70
254617
3286
04:29
I thought to myself
04:32
would be the next下一个 single biggest最大 change更改
in how we consume消耗 and create创建 music音乐.
72
260858
4417
04:38
Because nowadays如今, we have
04:42
that have hundreds数以百计 of hours小时
of interactive互动 game游戏 plays播放,
74
270433
3015
04:45
but only two hours小时 of music音乐, on average平均.
75
273472
2113
04:47
And it means手段 that the music音乐
loops循环 and loops循环 and loops循环
76
275609
2492
04:50
over and over again,
and it's not very immersive身临其境.
77
278125
2332
04:52
So what we're working加工 on
is to make sure that AIAI can compose撰写
78
280467
3951
04:56
hundreds数以百计 of hours小时 of personalized个性化 music音乐
79
284442
2302
04:58
for those use cases
where human人的 creativity创造力 doesn't scale规模.
80
286768
3866
05:03
And we don't just want
to do that for games游戏.
81
291363
2206
05:06
Beethoven贝多芬 actually其实 wrote a piece
for his beloved心爱, called "Für Elise爱 丽 丝,"
82
294657
4428
05:11
