ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Thurman - Buddhist scholar
The first American to be ordained a Tibetan Monk by the Dalai Lama, Robert A.F. Thurman is a scholar, author and tireless proponent of peace.

Why you should listen

Tenzin Robert Thurman became a Tibetan monk at age 24. He's a professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies at Columbia University, and co-founder of Tibet House US, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization.

Thurman's focus is on the balance between inner insight and cultural harmony. In interpreting the teachings of Buddha, he argues that happiness can be reliable and satisfying in an enduring way without depriving others.

He has translated many Buddhist Sutras, or teachings, and written many books, recently taking on the topic of Anger for the recent Oxford series on the seven deadly sins. He maintains a podcast on Buddhist topics. And yes, he is Uma's dad.

06:21
I'll figurefigura out what to do with the maggotscucs."
113
369000
3000
ja veuré què faig amb els cucs."
06:24
So he startscomença to do that. He can't grabagafar the maggotscucs.
114
372000
2000
I comença a fer-ho. Però no pot agafar els cucs.
06:26
ApparentlyAparentment they wriggleretorçar around. They're kindamable of harddur to grabagafar, these maggotscucs.
115
374000
4000
Sembla que no s'estan quiets. Són difícils d'agafar, aquests cucs.
06:30
So he saysdiu, "Well, I'll put my tonguellengua on the dog'sdel gos fleshcarn.
116
378000
4000
06:34
And then the maggotscucs will jumpsaltar on my warmermés càlid tonguellengua" --
117
382000
2000
06:36
the doggos is kindamable of used up --
118
384000
2000
El gos sembla acabat.
06:38
"and then I'll spitescopir them one by one down on the thing."
119
386000
3000
06:41
So he goesva down, and he's stickingenganxant his tonguellengua out like this.
120
389000
3000
Així doncs, comença i posa la llengua,
06:44
And he had to closea prop his eyesulls, it's so disgustingdesagradable, and the smellolor and everything.
121
392000
5000
06:49
And then, suddenlyde sobte, there's a pfftpfft, a noisesoroll like that.
122
397000
2000
06:51
He jumpssalta back and there, of coursecurs, is the futurefutur BuddhaBuda MaitreyaMaitreya
123
399000

"Doncs cercava el Buda en persona." va respondre.
07:30
And he said, "You didn't have, untilfins a this momentmoment, realreal compassioncompassió.
135
438000

136

07:39
"MaitreyaMaitreya" meanssignifica love, "the lovingestimant one," in SanskritSànscrit.
137
447000
4000
Sabeu?
07:43
And so he lookedmirava very dubiousdubtosa, AsangaAsanga did.
138

07:45

07:48
And so he tookva prendre the MaitreyaMaitreya -- it shrunkreduït into a globeglobus terraqüi, a ballbola --
140

07:53
tookva prendre him on his shoulderespatlla.
141

08:13

147
481000

08:20
So, naturallynaturalment, they chasedperseguit him out of townciutat.
149

08:22
But on the edgevora of townciutat, one elderlyancians ladysenyora, a charwomancharwoman in the charnelcharnel groundterra,

saw a jeweledJEWELED footpeu on a jeweledJEWELED lotuslotus on his shoulderespatlla and then the doggos,
151

08:31

08:35
So that encouragedva animar him, and he wentva anar with MaitreyaMaitreya.
153
503000
3000
08:38
MaitreyaMaitreya then tookva prendre him to a certaincert heavencel,

08:43
And MaitreyaMaitreya then keptmantingut him in heavencel for fivecinc yearsanys,

08:52
And then I thought I would shareCompartir with you what that methodmètode is, or one of them.
159
520000
3000
08:55
A famousfamós one, it's calledanomenat the "SevenfoldSevenfold CausalCausal MethodMètode of DevelopingDesenvolupament CompassionCompassió."
160
523000
5000
09:00
And it beginscomença first by one meditatingmeditant and visualizingvisualitzar that all beingséssers are with one --
161
528000
7000
09:07
even animalsanimals too, but everyonetothom is in humanhumà formforma.
162
535000
4000
09:11
The animalsanimals are in one of theirels seus humanhumà livesvides. The humansels éssers humans are humanhumà.
163
539000
3000
09:14
And then, amongentre them, you think of your friendsamics and lovedestimat onesuns, the circlecercle at the tabletaula.
164
542000
5000
09:19
And you think of your enemiesenemics, and you think of the neutralneutral onesuns.
165
547000
3000
09:22
And then you try to say, "Well, the lovedestimat onesuns I love.
166
550000
4000
I mires de dir, "Bé, als estimats els estimo.
09:26
But, you know, after all, they're niceagradable to me.
167
554000
2000
09:28
I had fightslluites with them. SometimesVegades they were unfriendlyantipàtic.
168
556000
2000
De vegades m'hi barallo. De vegades són antipàtics.
09:30
I got madboig. BrothersGermans can fightlluitar. ParentsPares and childrennens can fightlluitar.
169
558000
3000
M'hi he emprenyat. Els germans es barallen. Pares i fills es barallen.
09:33
So, in a way, I like them so much because they're niceagradable to me.
170
561000
4000
09:37
While the neutralneutral onesuns I don't know. They could all be just fine.
171
565000
4000
Dels indiferents no en puc dir res. Podrien estar bé.
09:41
And then the enemiesenemics I don't like because they're mean to me.
172
569000
4000
09:45
But they are niceagradable to somebodyalgú. I could be them."
173
573000
3000
09:48
And then the BuddhistsBudistes, of coursecurs, think that, because we'vetenim all had infiniteinfinit previousanterior livesvides,
174
576000
4000
09:52
we'vetenim all been eachcadascun other'sd'altres relativesfamiliars, actuallyen realitat.
175
580000
4000
tots hem sigut parents, en realitat.
09:56
ThereforePer tant all of you, in the BuddhistBudista viewveure,
176
584000
2000
09:58
in some previousanterior life, althoughencara que you don't rememberrecorda it and neithercap dels dos do I,
177
586000
4000
10:02
have been my mothermare -- for whichquin I do apologizedemaneu disculpes for the troubleproblemes I causedcausat you.
178
590000
5000
heu estat la meva mare, i demano perdó pels problemes que hagi pogut crear-vos.
10:07
And alsotambé, actuallyen realitat, I've been your mothermare.
179
595000
3000
I jo també he estat la vostra mare.
10:10
I've been femalefemella, and I've been everycada singlesolter one of yours'teva' mothermare in a previousanterior life,
180
598000
3000
He sigut dona i he sigut la mare de tots vosaltres en vides passades
10:13
the way the BuddhistsBudistes reflectreflecteixen.
181
601000
2000
així és com pensen els Budistes.
10:15
So, my mothermare in this life is really great. But all of you in a way
182
603000
3000
10:18
are partpart of the eternaleterna mothermare.
183
606000
3000
sou part de la mare eterna.
10:21
You gaveva donar me that expressionexpressió; "the eternaleterna mamamare," you said. That's wonderfulmeravellós.
184
609000
4000
10:25
So, that's the way the BuddhistsBudistes do it.
185
613000
2000
Així és com ho fan els Budistes.
10:27
A theistteista ChristianCristiana can think that all beingséssers, even my enemiesenemics, are God'sDe Déu childrennens.
186
615000
5000
10:32
So, in that sensesentit, we're relatedrelacionat.
187
620000
2000
També, d'aquesta manera, estem emparentats.
10:34
So, they first createcrear this foundationfundació of equalityigualtat.
188
622000
3000
10:37
So, we sortordenar of reducereduir a little of the clingingaferrar-se to the onesuns we love --
189
625000
4000
10:41
just in the meditationmeditació -- and we openobert our mindment to those we don't know.
190
629000
4000
només en la meditació -- i obrim la ment a qui no coneixem.
10:45
And we definitelydefinitivament reducereduir the hostilityhostilitat and the "I don't want to be compassionatecompassiu to them"
191
633000
4000
I sobre tot reduïm l'hostilitat i el "No vull sentir compassió d'ells"
10:49
to the onesuns we think of as the baddolent guys, the onesuns we hateodi and we don't like.
192
637000
5000
10:54
And we don't hateodi anyoneningú, thereforeper tant. So we equalizeigualar. That's very importantimportant.
193
642000
3000
I ja no odiarem ningú. Ens estem igualant. Això és molt important.
10:57
And then the nextPròxim thing we do is what is calledanomenat "mothermare recognitionreconeixement."
194
645000
4000
11:01
And that is, we think of everycada beingser as familiarfamiliar, as familyfamília.
195
649000
5000
11:06
We expandampliar. We take the feelingsensació about rememberingrecordant a mamamare,
196
654000
5000
Ens expandim. Agafem el sentiment de recordar la mare,
11:11
and we defusedesactivar that to all beingséssers in this meditationmeditació.
197
659000
4000
11:15
And we see the mothermare in everycada beingser.
198
663000
2000
I veiem la mare en cada ésser.
11:17
We see that look that the mothermare has on her facecara,
199
665000
3000
11:20
looking at this childnen that is a miraclemiracle
200
668000
2000
11:22
that she has producedproduït from her ownpropi bodycos, beingser a mammalmamífer,
201
670000
3000
11:25
where she has trueveritat compassioncompassió, trulyveritablement is the other, and identifiesidentifica completelycompletament.
202
673000
4000
on té veritable compassió, veritablement és l'altre i s'hi identifica completament.
11:29
OftenSovint the life of that other will be more importantimportant to her than her ownpropi life.
203
677000
4000
11:33
And that's why it's the mostla majoria powerfulpotent formforma of altruismaltruisme.
204
681000
3000
11:36
The mothermare is the modelmodel of all altruismaltruisme for humanhumà beingséssers,
205
684000
4000
11:40
in spiritualespiritual traditionstradicions.
206
688000
3000
en les tradicions espirituals.
11:43
And so, we reflectreflecteixen untilfins a we can sortordenar of see that motherlymaternal expressionexpressió in all beingséssers.
207
691000
6000
11:49
People laughriure at me because, you know, I used to say that
208
697000
3000
11:52
I used to meditatemeditar on mamamare CheneyCheney as my mommare,
209
700000
4000
11:56
when, of coursecurs, I was annoyedmolest with him about all of his evildolent doingsfets in IraqL'Iraq.
210
704000
5000
12:01
I used to meditatemeditar on GeorgeGeorge BushBush. He's quitebastant a cutevalent mommare in a femalefemella formforma.
211
709000
3000
12:04
He has his little earsorelles and he smilessomriu and he rocksroques you in his armsarmes.
212
712000
3000
12:07
And you think of him as nursingd'Infermeria you.
213
715000
3000
12:10
And then SaddamSaddam Hussein'sHussein seriousgreu mustachebigoti is a problemproblema,
214
718000
3000
12:13
but you think of him as a mommare.
215
721000
3000
Però hi penses com a mare.
12:16
And this is the way you do it. You take any beingser who looksaspecte weirdestrany to you,
216
724000
2000
I així és com ho fas. Agafes qualsevol ésser que et sembli estrany,
12:18
and you see how they could be familiarfamiliar to you.
217
726000
4000
i mires com podria ser familiar per a tu.
12:22
And you do that for a while, untilfins a you really feel that.
218
730000
4000
12:26
You can feel the familiarityfamiliaritat of all beingséssers.
219
734000
2000
12:28
NobodyNingú seemssembla alienestranger. They're not "other."
220
736000
2000
Ningú sembla aliè. Ja no són "l'altre."
12:30
You reducereduir the feelingsensació of othernessalteritat about beingséssers.
221
738000
3000
12:33
Then you movemoure's from there to rememberingrecordant the kindnessbondat of mothersmares in generalgeneral,
222
741000
5000
12:38
if you can rememberrecorda the kindnessbondat of your ownpropi mothermare,
223
746000
2000
12:40
if you can rememberrecorda the kindnessbondat of your spousecònjuge,
224

12:45
And you begincomençar to get very sentimentalsentimental; you cultivatecultivar sentimentalitysentimentalisme intenselyintensament.
226

I comences a posar-te nostàlgic, cultives aquesta nostàlgia intensament.
12:50
You will even weepplorar, perhapstal vegada, with gratitudegratitud and kindnessbondat.
227
758000

Potser fins i tot ploraràs de gratitud i bondat.
12:53
And then you connectconnectar that with your feelingsensació that everyonetothom has that motherlymaternal possibilitypossibilitat.
228

12:57
EveryCada beingser, even the mostla majoria mean looking onesuns, can be motherlymaternal.
229
765000

13:02
And then, thirdtercer, you steppas from there to what is calledanomenat "a feelingsensació of gratitudegratitud."
230
770000
4000
13:06
You want to repayreemborsar that kindnessbondat that all beingséssers have shownmostrat to you.
231
774000
4000
13:10
And then the fourthquart steppas, you go to what is calledanomenat "lovelypreciosa love."
232
778000
4000
13:14
In eachcadascun one of these you can take some weekssetmanes, or monthsmesos, or daysdies
233
782000
2000
Per cada pas pots trigar setmanes, mesos o dies

234
784000
4000
13:20
And then you think of how lovelypreciosa beingséssers are when they are happyfeliç,
235
788000
5000
13:25
when they are satisfiedsatisfet.
236
793000
2000
quan estan satisfets.
13:27
And everycada beingser looksaspecte beautifulbonic when they are internallyinternament feelingsensació a happinessfelicitat.

4000
I cada ésser és bonic quan internament se sent feliç.
13:31
TheirSeva facecara doesn't look like this. When they're angryenutjat, they look uglylleig, everycada beingser,

13:35
but when they're happyfeliç they look beautifulbonic.
239
803000
2000
però quan són feliços són macos.
13:37
And so you see beingséssers in theirels seus potentialpotencial happinessfelicitat.
240
805000
3000
13:40
And you feel a love towardcap a them and you want them to be happyfeliç, even the enemyenemic.
241
808000
3000
13:43
We think JesusJesús is beingser unrealisticrealista
242
811000
2000
13:45
when he saysdiu, "Love thineteu enemyenemic."
243
813000
4000
quan diu "estima el teu enemic".
13:49
He does say that, and we think he's beingser unrealisticrealista
244
817000
3000
Ell ho diu i pensem que no toca de peus a terra
13:52
and sortordenar of spiritualespiritual and highfalutinhighfalutin. "NiceNiça for him to say it, but I can't do that."
245
820000
3000
i que és espiritual i un exagerat. "Està bé que ell ho digui, però jo no puc fer-ho."
13:55
But, actuallyen realitat, that's practicalpràctic.
246
823000
2000
Però, de fet, és molt pràctic.
13:57
If you love your enemyenemic that meanssignifica you want your enemyenemic to be happyfeliç.
247
825000
3000
14:00
If your enemyenemic was really happyfeliç, why would they bothermolestar to be your enemyenemic?
248
828000
4000
14:04
How boringavorrit to runcorrer around chasingperseguint you.
249
832000

Quin avorriment anar sempre darrera teu.
14:06
They would be relaxingrelaxant somewhereen algun lloc havingtenint a good time.
250
834000
3000
Estaria tranquil·lament en algun lloc passant-s'ho bé.
14:09
So it makesfa sensesentit to want your enemyenemic to be happyfeliç,
251
837000
2000
14:11
because they'llho faran stop beingser your enemyenemic because that's too much troubleproblemes.
252
839000
3000
14:14
But anywayDe tota manera, that's the "lovelypreciosa love. "
253
842000
2000
14:16
And then finallyfinalment, the fifthcinquè steppas is compassioncompassió, "universaluniversal compassioncompassió."
254
844000
4000
14:20
And that is where you then look at the realityrealitat of all the beingséssers you can think of.
255
848000
6000
14:26
And you look at them, and you see how they are.
256
854000
2000
Els mires i veus com són.
14:28
And you realizeadonar-se how unhappyinfeliç they are actuallyen realitat, mostlysobretot, mostla majoria of the time.
257
856000
4000
14:32
You see that furrowedArrufat browcella in people.
258
860000
2000
Veus la gent amb el front arrugat.
14:34
And then you realizeadonar-se they don't even have compassioncompassió on themselvesells mateixos.
259
862000
3000
I te n'adones que no tenen compassió ni d'ells mateixos.
14:37
They're drivenimpulsat by this dutydeure and this obligationobligació.
260
865000
2000
Els mouen el deure i l'obligació.
14:39
"I have to get that. I need more. I'm not worthydigne. And I should do something."
261
867000
4000
"He d'obtenir allò. Necessito més. No sóc digne. I hauria de fer alguna cosa."
14:43
And they're rushingcorrent around all stressedva destacar out.
262
871000
2000
I van corrent estressats tot el dia.
14:45
And they think of it as somehowd'alguna manera machomascle, harddur disciplinedisciplina on themselvesells mateixos.
263
873000
4000
14:49
But actuallyen realitat they are cruelcruel to themselvesells mateixos.
264
877000
3000
14:52
And, of coursecurs, they are cruelcruel and ruthlesscruel towardcap a othersaltres.
265
880000
2000
14:54
And they, then, never get any positivepositiu feedbackcomentaris.
266
882000
2000
14:56
And the more they succeedtriomfar and the more powerpoder they have,
267
884000
2000
14:58
the more unhappyinfeliç they are.
268
886000
2000
són molt més desgraciats.
15:00
And this is where you feel realreal compassioncompassió for them.
269
888000
3000
I aquí és on sents veritable compassió per ells.
15:03
And you then feel you musthaver de actactuar.
270
891000
3000
I sents que has de fer-hi alguna cosa.
15:06
And the choiceelecció of the actionacció, of coursecurs,
271

2000
I triar l'acció, per suposat,
15:08
hopefullyamb sort will be more practicalpràctic
272

4000
15:12

15:21
But, of coursecurs, that is impracticalimpracticable. He should have foundedfundat the ASPCAASPCAT in the townciutat
276

15:34
And so the nextPròxim steppas -- the sixthsisè steppas beyondmés enllà "universaluniversal compassioncompassió" --
279
922000
4000
15:38
is this thing where you're linkedenllaçat with the needsnecessitats of othersaltres in a trueveritat way,
