ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kakenya Ntaiya - Educator and activist
Kakenya Ntaiya refused to accept the continued oppression of women in her Maasai village -- so she built a school that's shifting gender expectations in her community.

Why you should listen

Kakenya Ntaiya was set to follow the traditional path of girls born in the small village of Enoosaen, Kenya. Engaged at the age of 5, she was to participate in a female circumcision ceremony as a young teenager and then be married. But she had a different plan. First, she negotiated with her father and willingly agree to be circumcised -- only if he would allow her to finish high school. Later, when she was accepted to Randolph-Macon Women's College in Viriginia, she negotiated with her village elders to do what no girl had ever done before: leave her village to go to college in the United States.

She didn’t leave forever, though. Deeply proud of her heritage and of her community, Ntaiya returned to the village after school and worked with her elders to establish a school for girls there. The Kakenya Center for Excellence was established in 2009 with 32 students. A primary grade boarding school just for girls, the curriculum focuses on academics, leadership and female empowerment, along with cultural preservation and life skills. While families that can afford tuition do, Ntaiya also works with donors to provide scholarships for others.

In addition to her work with the school, Ntaiya is also a National Geographic emerging explorer.

These people are tall.

Pertsona hauek altuak dira.

They jump high. They wear red.

Salto handiak egiten dituzte.
Gorriz janzten dira.
00:31
And they kill lions.

Eta lehoiak hiltzen dituzte.
00:33
You might be wondering, who are these people?
5
17738

Galdetuko duzue:
nor dira pertsona hauek?
00:36
These are the Maasais.
6
20795

Masaiak dira.
00:39
And you know what's cool? I'm actually one of them.
7
23389

Eta badakizue zer den hoberena?
Horietako bat naizela.
00:45
The Maasais, the boys are brought up to be warriors.
8
29291
4360
Masai etniako mutilak
gerlariak izateko hezten dituzte.
00:49
The girls are brought up to be mothers.
9
33651
3247
Neskak, berriz, amak izateko.
00:52
When I was five years old,
10
36898
2528
Bost urte nituenean,
00:55
I found out that I was engaged
11
39426
2568
pubertarora iritsi bezain laster
00:57
to be married as soon as I reached puberty.
12
41994
3086
ezkondu beharko nuela esan zidaten.
01:00
My mother, my grandmother, my aunties,
13
45080
2986
Nire amak, nire amonak eta nire izebek
01:03
they constantly reminded me that
14
48066
2178
etengabe gogorarazten zidaten:
01:06
your husband just passed by.
15
50244
2720
"Zure senarra etxetik pasa da".
01:08
(Laughter) Cool, yeah?
16
52964
4946
(Barreak) Primeran, ezta?
01:13
And everything I had to do from that moment
17
57910
3165
Eta handik aurrera nire eginbeharreko bakarra
01:16
was to prepare me to be a perfect woman at age 12.
18
61075
4631
12 urterekin emakume perfektu bat bihurtzea zen.
01:21
My day started at 5 in the morning,
19
65706
3577
Nire eguna goizeko bostetan hasten zen,
01:25
milking the cows, sweeping the house,
20
69283
2157
behiak jetzi, etxea erraztu,
01:27
cooking for my siblings, collecting water, firewood.
21
71440
4539
nire neba-arrebentzat janaria prestatu
ura, abarrak biltzeko.
01:31
I did everything that I needed to do
22
75979
3242
Emazte perfektua bihurtzeko
01:35
to become a perfect wife.
23
79221
3627
egin beharreko guztia egin nuen.
01:38
I went to school not because the Maasais'
24
82848
3064
Eskolara joaten nintzen
01:41
women or girls were going to school.
25
85912
2641
ez masai etniako neskak
eskolara joaten zirelako,
01:44
It's because my mother was denied an education,
26
88553
3157
baizik eta nire amak
eskolara ezin izan zuelako joan,
01:47
and she constantly reminded me and my siblings that
27
91710
3469
eta etengabe gogorarazten zigun
bai niri eta baita nire neba-arrebei ere
01:51
she never wanted us to live the life she was living.
28
95179
3948
ez zuela inolaz ere nahi
berak bizitakoa guk bizitzea.
01:55
Why did she say that?
29
99127
2529
Zergatik esaten zuen hori?
01:57
My father worked as a policeman in the city.
30
101656
3328
Nire aita polizia zen hirian.
02:00
He came home once a year.
31
104984
1630
Urtean behin bakarrik etortzen zen.
02:02
We didn't see him for sometimes even two years.
32
106614
3357
Batzuetan ez genuen bi urtean behin ere ikusten.
02:05
And whenever he came home, it was a different case.
33
109971
3888
Eta etxera etortzen zenean,
dena ezberdina izaten zen.
02:09
My mother worked hard in the farm
34
113859
2005
Amak baserrian oso gogor egiten zuen lan
02:11
to grow crops so that we can eat.
35
115864
1866
uzta bildu eta gu elikatzeko.
02:13
She reared the cows and the goats
36
117730
2103
Ahuntza eta behiak hazten zituen
02:15
so that she can care for us.
37
119833
2015
gutaz arduratzen zelako.
02:17
But when my father came, he would sell the cows,
38
121848
2830
Baina nire aita zetorrenean, behiak saldu,
02:20
he would sell the products we had,
39
124678
2383
gure produktuak saldu
02:22
and he went and drank with his friends in the bars.
40
127061
4195
eta tabernara joaten zen lagunekin mozkortzera.
02:27
Because my mother was a woman,
41
131256
1393
Amak, andrea zenez,
02:28
she was not allowed to own any property,
42
132649
3001
ezin zuen inolako ondasunen jabea izan.
02:31
and by default, everything in my family anyway
43
135650
2494
eta familian geneukan guztia aitarena zen,
02:34
belongs to my father, so he had the right.
44
138144
2672
beraz eskubidea zuen horretarako.
02:36
And if my mother ever questioned him,
45
140816
2289
Eta amak inoiz ezer esaten bazion,
02:39
he beat her, abused her, and really it was difficult.
46
143105
6788
jo egiten zuen,
oso gogorra zen guretzat.
02:45
When I went to school, I had a dream.
47
149893
3006
Eskolara joaten nintzenean, amets bat nuen.
02:48
I wanted to become a teacher.
48
152899
2405
Irakasle izan nahi nuen.
02:51
Teachers looked nice.
49
155304
1806
Irakasleak atseginak zirela ematen zuen.
02:53
They wear nice dresses, high-heeled shoes.
50
157110
2253
Soineko politak
eta takoidun zapatak janzten zituzten.
02:55
I found out later that they are uncomfortable, but I admired it.
51
159363
3103
Geroago deserosoak zirela ikasi nuen,
baina miretsi egiten nituen.
02:58
(Laughter)
52
162466
3255
(Barreak)
03:01
But most of all, the teacher was just writing on the board --
53
165721
3501
Baina gehienbat,
irakasleek arbelean idazten zuten,
03:05
not hard work, that's what I thought,
54
169222
3074
lan erraza zela uste nuen,
03:08
compared to what I was doing in the farm.
55
172296
2880
nire baserriko lanarekin alderatura behintzat.
03:11
So I wanted to become a teacher.
56
175176
1947
Beraz, irakasle izan nahi nuen.
03:13
I worked hard in school, but when I was in eighth grade,
57
177123
3903
Eskolan oso gogor egiten nuen lan.
Zortzigarren mailan
03:16
it was a determining factor.
58
181026
2404
faktore erabakitzaile bat zegoen.
03:19
In our tradition, there is a ceremony
59
183430
2573
Gure tradizioan bada zeremonia bat,
03:21
that girls have to undergo to become women,
60
186003
2833
neskek emakume bihurtzeko
jasan behar dutena,
03:24
and it's a rite of passage to womanhood.
61
188836
2581
emakume bihurtzeko erritu bat da.
03:27
And then I was just finishing my eighth grade,
62
191417
3568
Zortzigarren maila amaitzear nengoen,
03:30
and that was a transition for me to go to high school.
63
194985
2551
institutura joateko
trantsizio puntu bat zen.
03:33
This was the crossroad.
64
197536
1581
Gurutzagunea zen.
03:35
Once I go through this tradition, I was going to become a wife.
65
199117
5522
Tradizio hau jasan ondoren,
emazte bihurtuko nintzen.
03:40
Well, my dream of becoming a teacher will not come to pass.
66
204639
4242
Irakasle izateko ametsa
ez zen egi bilakatuko.
03:44
So I talked -- I had to come up with a plan
67
208881
2515
Beraz, plan bat bilatu beharra neukan
03:47
to figure these things out.
68
211396
2564
arazo hauek konpontzeko.
03:49
I talked to my father. I did something that most girls have never done.
69
213960
4136
Aitarekin hitz egin nuen.
Neska gutxik egindako zerbait egin nuen.
03:53
I told my father, "I will only go through this ceremony
70
218096
3200
Aitari esan nion:
"Zeremonia hori pairatuko dut
03:57
if you let me go back to school."
71
221296
2580
eskolara itzultzen uzten badidazu".
03:59
The reason why, if I ran away,
72
223876
2588
Hanka egiten banuen,
aitak izen txarra izango zuen,
04:02
my father will have a stigma, people will be calling him
73
226464
3446
jendeak ezizena jarriko zion,
04:05
the father of that girl who didn't go through the ceremony.
74
229910
3041
zeremoniara joan ez zen neskaren aita
deituko zuten.
04:08
It was a shameful thing for him to carry the rest of his life.
75
232951
4019
Bizitza osoan eraman beharko zuen
zama lotsagarria zen.
04:12
So he figured out. "Well," he said, "okay,
76
236970
2852
Pentsatu eta esan zidan: "Ondo da,
04:15
you'll go to school after the ceremony."
77
239822
3333
zeremonia eta gero eskolara joango zara".
04:19
I did. The ceremony happened.
78
243155
2620
Eta hala egin nuen.
Zeremonia iritsi zen.
04:21
It's a whole week long of excitement.
79
245775
3581
Asaldurazko aste oso bat da.
04:25
It's a ceremony. People are enjoying it.
80
249356
2165
Zeremonia bat.
Jendeak ongi pasatzen du.
04:27
And the day before the actual ceremony happens,
81
251521
2968
Eta zeremoniaren bezperan
04:30
we were dancing, having excitement,
82
254489
2488
denok dantzan aritu ginen, asaldatuta
04:32
and through all the night we did not sleep.
83
256977
3923
eta ez genuen lorik egin gau osoan.
04:36
The actual day came, and we walked out of the house
84
260900
3330
Eguna iritsi zen
eta dantza egiten egondako etxetik
04:40
that we were dancing in. Yes, we danced and danced.
85
264230
2154
atera ginen.
Dantza eta dantza egin genuen.
04:42
We walked out to the courtyard, and there were a bunch of people waiting.
86
266384
3869
Patiora atera ginenean,
jende mordoa zegoen zain.
04:46
They were all in a circle.
87
270253
2611
Denak zirkuluan zeuden jarrita.
04:48
And as we danced and danced,
88
272864
1659
Dantzan ari ginela
04:50
and we approached this circle of women,
89
274523
2845
zirkulura hurreratu ginen,
04:53
men, women, children, everybody was there.
90
277368
3151
emakumez, gizonez eta umez egindako zirkulura.
Denak zeuden han.
04:56
There was a woman sitting in the middle of it,
91
280519
2568
Emakume bat zegoen erdian eserita
04:58
and this woman was waiting to hold us.
92
283087
4538
eta gure zain zegoen.
05:03
I was the first. There were my sisters and a couple of other girls,
93
287625
3675
Ni izan nintzen lehena.
Nire ahizpak eta beste neska batzuk ere han zeuden
05:07
and as I approached her,
94
291300
2994
eta hurbildu nintzaionean,
05:10
she looked at me, and I sat down.
95
294294
2719
begiratu zidan
eta eseri egin nintzen.
05:12
And I sat down, and I opened my legs.
96
297013
3578
Eseri eta hankak ireki nituen.
05:16
As I opened my leg, another woman came,
97
300591
3468
Ireki nituenean beste emakume bat etorri zen.
05:19
and this woman was carrying a knife.
98
304059
3356
Aizto bat zeraman.
05:23
And as she carried the knife, she walked toward me
99
307415
3584
Aiztoa eskuetan zuela, niregana hurreratu,
05:26
and she held the clitoris, and she cut it off.
100
310999
4389
klitoria heldu eta moztu egin zidan.
05:31
As you can imagine, I bled. I bled.
101
315388
5263
Irudikatu dezakezuen bezala, odola zeridan.
05:36
After bleeding for a while, I fainted thereafter.
102
320651
5098
Odoletan une batez egon ondoren,
zorabiatu egin nintzen.
05:41
It's something that so many girls --
103
325749
2123
Neska asko -
05:43
I'm lucky, I never died -- but many die.
104
327872
3898
nik zortea izan nuen,
ez nintzen hil, baina asko bai.
05:47
It's practiced, it's no anesthesia, it's a rusty old knife,
105
331770
6411
Anestesiarik gabe,
aizto zahar, herdoildu bat da.
05:54
and it was difficult.
106
338181
2801
Oso gogorra izan zen.
05:56
I was lucky because one, also, my mom did something
107
340982
2737
Zortea izan nuen, nire amak egin zuelako
05:59
that most women don't do.
108
343719
2997
ia inork egiten ez duen zerbait.
06:02
Three days later, after everybody has left the home,
109
346716
2827
Hiru egun beranduago,
guztiek alde egin ondoren,
06:05
my mom went and brought a nurse.
110
349543
1722
nire amak erizain bat ekarri zuen.
06:07
We were taken care of.
111
351265
1854
Zaindu egin gintuen.
06:09
Three weeks later, I was healed, and I was back in high school.
112
353119
4593
Hiru aste beranduago sendatuta nengoen
eta institutura itzuli nintzen.
06:13
I was so determined to be a teacher now
113
357712
3471
Inoiz baino ziurrago nengoen
irakasle izan nahi nuela
06:17
so that I could make a difference in my family.
114
361183
4000
nire familia aldatu ahal izateko.
06:21
Well, while I was in high school, something happened.
115
365183
3767
Zerbait gertatu zen institutuan nengoenean.
06:24
I met a young gentleman from our village
116
368950
2614
Herriko gizon gazte bat ezagutu nuen
06:27
who had been to the University of Oregon.
117
371564
2233
Oregoneko unibertsitatean egondakoa.
06:29
This man was wearing a white t-shirt, jeans, camera,
118
373797
5876
Gizon honek kamiseta zuri bat,
bakeroak, argazki-kamera
06:35
white sneakers -- and I'm talking about white sneakers.
119
379673
3296
eta kirol-oinetakoak zeramatzan.
Kirol-oinetako zuriak.
06:38
There is something about clothes, I think, and shoes.
120
382969
3927
Uste dut badagoela zerbait arropa eta zapatekin.
06:42
They were sneakers, and this is in a village
121
386896
3463
Kirol-oinetakoak ziren, eta gure herrian
06:46
that doesn't even have paved roads. It was quite attractive.
122
390359
4070
ez zegoen asfaltatutako biderik.
Nahiko erakargarria zen.
06:50
I told him, "Well, I want to go to where you are,"
123
394429
4987
Esan nion: "Zu zauden lekura joan nahi dut".
06:55
because this man looked very happy, and I admired that.
124
399416
4248
gizon hura pozik zegoela iruditzen baitzitzaidan,
eta hori miretsi egiten nuen.
06:59
And he told me, "Well,
125
403664
2265
Berak hau esan zidan: "Zer diozu?
07:01
what do you mean, you want to go?
126
405929
1134
"Alde egin?
07:02
Don't you have a husband waiting for you?"
127
407063
2320
Ez al duzu senar bat zain?"
07:05
And I told him, "Don't worry about that part.
128
409383
2805
Erantzun nion: "Ez kezkatu,
07:08
Just tell me how to get there."
129
412188
3158
Esadazu hara nola irits naitekeen".
07:11
This gentleman, he helped me.
130
415346
2602
Gizon gazte hark asko lagundu zidan.
07:13
While I was in high school also, my dad was sick.
131
417948
2847
Institutuan nengoenean aita gaixorik zegoen.
07:16
He got a stroke, and he was really, really sick,
132
420795
3268
Apoplexia bat izan zuen,
oso gaixorik zegoen,
07:19
so he really couldn't tell me what to do next.
133
424063
3320
ezin zidan esan
zer egin behar nuen.
07:23
But the problem is, my father is not the only father I have.
134
427383
3691
Baina arazoa zen neure aita
ez zela nik nuen aita bakarra.
07:26
Everybody who is my dad's age, male in the community,
135
431074
3445
Nire aitaren adineko
komunitateko gizon guztiak
07:30
is my father by default --
136
434519
1644
nire aita bezala ziren.
07:32
my uncles, all of them -- and they dictate what my future is.
137
436163
4183
Osabek eta beste guztiek esaten zuten
nola izango zen nire etorkizuna.
07:36
So the news came, I applied to school
138
440346
3133
Berriak iritsi ziren,
unibertsitaterako eskabidea egin nuen
07:39
and I was accepted to Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia,
139
443479
4232
eta Virginiako Randolph-Macon
Emakumeen Unibertsitatean hartu ninduten.
07:43
and I couldn't come without the support of the village,
140
447711
4440
Ezin nuen herriaren laguntzarik gabe joan,
07:48
because I needed to raise money to buy the air ticket.
141
452151
1992
hegazkin txartela erosteko dirua behar bainuen.
07:50
I got a scholarship but I needed to get myself here.
142
454143
3280
Diru-laguntza lortu nuen,
baina dirua behar nuen hara joateko.
07:53
But I needed the support of the village,
143
457423
2688
Herriaren babesa behar nuen.
07:56
and here again, when the men heard,
144
460111
3582
Gizonek entzun zutenean
07:59
and the people heard that a woman had gotten an opportunity to go to school,
145
463693
4077
emakume batek
unibertsitatera joateko aukera zuela,
08:03
they said, "What a lost opportunity.
146
467770
2425
esan zuten: "Galdutako aukera bat da.
08:06
This should have been given to a boy. We can't do this."
147
470195
3645
Mutil bati eman beharko zioten.
Ezin dizugu lagundu."
08:09
So I went back and I had to go back to the tradition.
148
473840
4327
Tradizioari jarraitu behar nion.
08:14
There's a belief among our people
149
478167
2318
Gure herrian bada sinismen bat,
08:16
that morning brings good news.
150
480485
3370
goizak berri onak dakartzala.
08:19
So I had to come up with something to do with the morning,
151
483855
2862
Goizarekin zerikusia zuen zerbait
asmatu behar nuen,
08:22
because there's good news in the morning.
152
486717
2402
berri onak goizean datozelako.
08:25
And in the village also, there is one chief, an elder,
153
489119
4204
Gure herrian badago buruzagi zahar bat,
08:29
who if he says yes, everybody will follow him.
154
493323
3652
eta berak baietz esanez gero,
guztiek onartzen dute bere erabakia.
08:32
So I went to him very early in the morning, as the sun rose.
155
496975
3655
Eguzkia irten bezain laster
berarengana joan nintzen.
08:36
The first thing he sees when he opens his door is, it's me.
156
500630
3761
Goizean atea ireki zuenean,
ni ikusi ninduen.
08:40
"My child, what are you doing here?"
157
504391
2549
"Maitea, zertan zabiltza hemen?"
08:42
"Well, Dad, I need help. Can you support me to go to America?"
158
506940
4275
"Aita, laguntza behar dut.
Lagunduko al didazu Amerikara joaten?"
08:47
I promised him that I would be the best girl,
159
511215
2232
Munduko neskarik onena
izango nintzela agindu nion,
08:49
I will come back, anything they wanted after that,
160
513447
3234
itzultzean berak nahi zuena
egingo nuela,
08:52
I will do it for them.
161
516681
2159
beraientzat edozer egiteko prest nengoela.
08:54
He said, "Well, but I can't do it alone."
162
518840
2094
"Bai, baina ezin dizut nik bakarrik lagundu",
08:56
He gave me a list of another 15 men that I went --
163
520934
3547
Beste 15 gizonen izenak eman zizkidan,
09:00
16 more men -- every single morning
164
524481
2537
beste 16 gizon, eta goizero
09:02
I went and visited them.
165
527018
1584
bisitan joaten nintzaien.
09:04
They all came together.
166
528602
1741
Azkenean ados etorri ziren.
09:06
The village, the women, the men, everybody came together
167
530343
2990
Herria, emakumeak, gizonak,
denak ados etorri ziren
09:09
to support me to come to get an education.
168
533333
3319
hezkuntza lortzeko niri laguntzeko.
09:12
I arrived in America. As you can imagine, what did I find?
169
536652
4763
Amerikara iritsi nintzen.
Eta zer aurkitu nuen?
09:17
I found snow!
170
541415
3209
Elurra!
09:20
I found Wal-Marts, vacuum cleaners,
171
544624
3158
Waltmart dendak, xurgagailuak
09:23
and lots of food in the cafeteria.
172
547782
3076
eta kafetegietan janari mordoa.
09:26
I was in a land of plenty.
173
550858
2653
Ugaritasunezko lurralde batean nengoen.
09:29
I enjoyed myself, but during that moment while I was here,
174
553511
5765
Oso ongi pasa nuen,
baina hemen nengoenean
09:35
I discovered a lot of things.
175
559276
2632
gauza askotaz jabetu nintzen.
09:37
I learned that that ceremony that I went through
176
561908
3041
13 urterekin jasandako zeremonia hura
09:40
when I was 13 years old, it was called female genital mutilation.
177
564949
5195
klitori ablazioa zela jakin nuen,
09:46
I learned that it was against the law in Kenya.
178
570144
3674
eta Kenian legearen aurka doala.
09:49
I learned that I did not have to trade part of my body
179
573818
3952
Ez nuela nire gorputzeko atal batekin
tratuan ibili beharrik
09:53
to get an education. I had a right.
180
577770
4078
hezkuntza lortzeko.
Horretarako eskubidea nuela.
09:57
And as we speak right now, three million girls
181
581848
3439
Momentu honetan hiru milioi neska daude
10:01
in Africa are at risk of going through this mutilation.
182
585287
5341
Afrikan ablazioa jasateko arriskuarekin.
10:06
I learned that my mom had a right to own property.
183
590628
3175
Jakin nuen
amak ondasunak izateko eskubidea zuela.
10:09
I learned that she did not have to be abused
184
593803
2889
Emakumea izateagatik ez zuela
10:12
because she is a woman.
185
596692
2443
kolpatua izan beharrik.
10:15
Those things made me angry.
186
599135
3087
Gauza hauek haserrearazten ninduten.
10:18
I wanted to do something.
187
602222
1901
Zerbait egin nahi nuen.
10:20
As I went back, every time I went,
188
604123
2569
Herrira itzultzen nintzen bakoitzean
10:22
I found that my neighbors' girls were getting married.
189
606692
2968
nire bizilagunen alabak ezkontzen ikusten nituen,
10:25
They were getting mutilated, and here,
190
609660
2074
ablazioa jasaten zutela eta hemen,
10:27
after I graduated from here, I worked at the U.N.,
191
611734
3536
graduatu eta Nazio Batuetan lan egin ondoren,
10:31
I went back to school to get my graduate work,
192
615270
2523
eskolara itzuli nintzen nire graduazio lana hartzera,
10:33
the constant cry of these girls was in my face.
193
617793
4110
neska horien negarrak nituen beti gogoan.
10:37
I had to do something.
194
621903
2826
Zerbait egin behar nuen.
10:40
As I went back, I started talking to the men,
195
624729
2920
Bueltatu eta gizonekin hitz egiten hasi nintzen,
10:43
to the village, and mothers, and I said,
196
627649
1587
herriarekin eta amekin.
10:45
"I want to give back the way I had promised you
197
629236
2020
"Agindutakoa egin nahi dut,
10:47
that I would come back and help you. What do you need?"
198
631256
2712
itzultzean lagunduko nizuela esan nuen.
Zer behar duzue?"
10:49
As I spoke to the women, they told me,
199
633968
2118
Emakumeek hau esan zidaten:
10:51
"You know what we need? We really need a school for girls."
200
636086
1976
"Neskentzako eskola bat behar dugu".
10:53
Because there had not been any school for girls.
201
638062
2756
Ez baitzegoen neskentzako eskolarik.
10:56
And the reason they wanted the school for girls
202
640818
1813
Arrazoia zera zen,
10:58
is because when a girl is raped when she's walking to school,
203
642631
3626
neska bat bortxatzen bazuten
eskolarako bidean,
11:02
the mother is blamed for that.
204
646257
2208
bere ama zelako erruduna.
11:04
If she got pregnant before she got married,
205
648465
3412
Ezkondu baino lehen haurdun geratzen bazen,
11:07
the mother is blamed for that, and she's punished.
206
651877
2369
amaren errua zen,
eta horregatik zigortzen zuten.
11:10
She's beaten.
207
654246
1641
Kolpatu egiten zuten.
11:11
They said, "We wanted to put our girls in a safe place."
208
655887
3735
Amek zioten:
"Neskak babespean eduki nahi ditugu".
11:15
As we moved, and I went to talk to the fathers,
209
659622
2643
Aitekin hitz egitera joan nintzen,
11:18
the fathers, of course, you can imagine what they said:
210
662265
2373
eta badakizue zer esan zuten aitek:
11:20
"We want a school for boys."
211
664638
2403
"Guk mutilentzat eskola bat nahi dugu".
11:22
And I said, "Well, there are a couple of men from my village
212
667041
3304
Esan nien: "Nire herriko mutil batzuk
11:26
who have been out and they have gotten an education.
213
670345
2672
atzerrira joan eta hezkuntza jaso dute.
11:28
Why can't they build a school for boys,
214
673017
2072
Zergatik ez dute haiek
mutilen eskola eraikitzen
11:30
and I'll build a school for girls?"
215
675089
2297
eta nik nesken eskola?"
11:33
That made sense. And they agreed.
216
677386
3275
Zentzuzkoa zen.
Nirekin bat etorri ziren.
11:36
And I told them, I wanted them to show me a sign of commitment.
217
680661
4659
Esan nien
konpromisoaren seinale bat ikusi behar nuela.
11:41
And they did. They donated land where we built the girls' school.
218
685320
4792
Eta hala egin zuten.
Nesken eskolarako lurrak eman zizkiguten.
11:46
We have.
219
690112
1459
Egin dugu.
11:47
I want you to meet one of the girls in that school.
220
691571
3132
Eskola hartako neska bat ezagutzea nahi dut.
11:50
Angeline came to apply for the school,
221
694703
2640
Angeline eskolan izena ematera etorri zen.
11:53
and she did not meet any criteria that we had.
222
697343
3600
Ez zuen
genituen irizpideetako bat ere betetzen.
11:56
She's an orphan. Yes, we could have taken her for that.
223
700943
2743
Umezurtza da.
Bai, horregatik onartuko genuen,
11:59
But she was older. She was 12 years old,
224
703686
2744
baina zaharregia zen.
12 urte zituen
12:02
and we were taking girls who were in fourth grade.
225
706430
3112
eta guk 4. mailako neskak hartzen genituen.
12:05
Angeline had been moving from one place --
226
709542
1795
Angeline toki batetik bestera zebilen
12:07
because she's an orphan, she has no mother, she has no father --
227
711337
2341
umezurtza delako,
ez du ez ama ez aitarik,
12:09
moving from one grandmother's house to another one,
228
713678
2354
eta bere amonen etxetik
izeben etxeetara zebilen,
12:11
from aunties to aunties. She had no stability in her life.
229
716032
3634
alde batetik bestera.
Ez zuen inolako egonkortasunik.
12:15
And I looked at her, I remember that day,
230
719666
2588
Berari begiratu nionean, egun hartan,
12:18
and I saw something beyond what I was seeing in Angeline.
231
722254
4532
une hartan ikusten ari nintzena
baino zerbait gehiago ikusi nuen.
12:22
And yes, she was older to be in fourth grade.
232
726786
2896
4. mailakoak baino zaharragoa zen,
12:25
We gave her the opportunity to come to the class.
233
729682
2970
baina klasera etortzeko aukera
eman genion.
12:28
Five months later, that is Angeline.
234
732652
3227
Hau da Angeline
bost hilabete beranduago.
12:31
A transformation had begun in her life.
235
735879
2766
Bere bizitzan
transformazio bat hasi berri zen.
12:34
Angeline wants to be a pilot so she can fly around the world
236
738645
2742
Angelinek pilotu izan nahi du
munduan zehar bidaiatu
12:37
and make a difference.
237
741387
1733
eta gauzak aldatzeko.
12:39
She was not the top student when we took her.
238
743120
1800
Ez zen ikasle onena hartu genuenean,
12:40
Now she's the best student, not just in our school,
239
744920
2496
baina orain onena da,
eta ez bakarrik gure eskolan,
12:43
but in the entire division that we are in.
240
747416
3149
baizik eta gauden sail osoan.
12:46
That's Sharon. That's five years later.
241
750565
4321
Hau Sharon da.
Eta hau bera bost urte beranduago.
12:50
That's Evelyn. Five months later, that is the difference that we are making.
242
754886
7169
Hau Evelyn da. Bost hilabete beranduago
hau da egiten dugun aldaketa.
12:57
As a new dawn is happening in my school,
243
762055
3275
Aro berri bat hasi da nire eskolan,
13:01
a new beginning is happening.
244
765330
2259
eta hasiera berri baten aurrean gaude.
13:03
As we speak right now, 125 girls will never be mutilated.
245
767589
5344
Momentu honetan, 125 neskek ez dute
ablazioa inoiz jasango.
13:08
One hundred twenty-five girls will not be married when they're 12 years old.
246
772933
4696
125 neskek ez dute 12 urterekin
ezkondu beharrik izango.
13:13
One hundred twenty-five girls are creating and achieving their dreams.
247
777629
5968
125 neska beren ametsak
sortzen eta lortzen ari dira.
13:19
This is the thing that we are doing,
248
783597
2273
Hau da egiten ari garena:
13:21
giving them opportunities where they can rise.
249
785870
3327
hazteko aukerak ematen.
13:25
As we speak right now, women are not being beaten
250
789197
3655
Momentu honetan, emakumeak ez dira kolpatuak
13:28
because of the revolutions we've started in our community.
251
792852
3546
gure komunitatean hasi genituen iraultzengatik.
13:32
(Applause)
252
796398
7680
(Txaloak)
13:39
I want to challenge you today.
253
804078
2835
Erronka jo nahi dizuet gaur.
13:42
You are listening to me because you are here,
254
806913
2904
Hemen zaudete niri entzuten,
13:45
very optimistic.
255
809817
2444
oso optimistak.
13:48
You are somebody who is so passionate.
256
812261
3514
Oso pertsona grinatsuak zarete.
13:51
You are somebody who wants to see a better world.
257
815775
3847
Mundu hobeagoa ikusi nahi duzue.
13:55
You are somebody who wants to see that war ends, no poverty.
258
819622
4506
Gudak eta pobrezia amaitzea nahi duzue.
14:00
You are somebody who wants to make a difference.
259
824128
2749
Gauzak aldatu nahi dituzue.
14:02
You are somebody who wants to make our tomorrow better.
260
826877
3566
Gure etorkizuna hobea izatea nahi duzue.
14:06
I want to challenge you today that to be the first,
261
830443
3778
Erronka egin nahi dizuet
beti lehenak izan zaitezten,
14:10
because people will follow you.
262
834221
2497
zeren modu honetan
jendeak jarraitu egingo zaituzte.
14:12
Be the first. People will follow you.
263
836718
2224
Izan zaitezte lehenak.
Jendeak jarraitu egingo zaituzte.
14:14
Be bold. Stand up. Be fearless. Be confident.
264
838942
5283
Izan ausartak. Altxa zaitezte.
Ez izan beldurrik. Zuengan sinetsi.
14:20
Move out, because as you change your world,
265
844225
3280
Mugi. Mundua aldatzen duzunean,
14:23
as you change your community,
266
847505
2439
zure komunitatea aldatzen duzu,
14:25
as we believe that we are impacting one girl, one family,
267
849944
4800
neska bat, familia bat
herri bat, herrialde batean
14:30
one village, one country at a time.
268
854744
3320
eragina dugula pentsatzen dugunean.
14:33
