Eu voltei a minha escola primária

e enquanto eu preparava
meus slides no projetor
00:24
in the cafetorium,
6

na cantina e auditório,
00:28
I looked across the room,
7
16100
2048
eu olhei pela sala,
00:30
and there she was:
8
18148
2611
e lá estava ela:
00:32
my old lunch lady.
9
20759
1844
minha velha tia da cantina.
00:34
She was still there at the school
10
22603
1967
Ela ainda estava lá na escola,
00:36
and she was busily preparing lunches for the day.
11
24570
2886
ocupada, preparando os lanches para o dia.
00:39
So I approached her to say hello,
12
27456
1644
Eu a abordei para cumprimentá-la,
00:41
and I said, "Hi, Jeannie! How are you?"
13
29100
1887
e disse: "Olá, Jeannie! Como vai?"
00:42
And she looked at me, and I could tell
14
30987
1570
E ela me olhou, e eu percebi
00:44
that she recognized me,
15
32557
1727
que ela me reconheceu,
00:46
but she couldn't quite place me,
and she looked at me and she said,
16
34284
3085
mas não lembrava bem quem eu era,
e ela me olhou e disse:
00:49
"Stephen Krosoczka?"
17
37369
2761
"Stephen Krosoczka?"
Fiquei espantado que ela sabia
que eu era um Krosoczka,
00:52
And I was amazed that she knew I was a Krosoczka,
18
40130
2142
00:54
but Stephen is my uncle who
is 20 years older than I am,
19
42272
3431
mas Stepehen era meu tio
que é 20 anos mais velho que eu,
00:57
and she had been his lunch lady when he was a kid.
20
45703
3137
e ela já era a tia da cantina
quando ele era criança.
01:00
And she started telling me about her grandkids,
21
48840
2505
E ela começou a me contar
sobre seus netos,
01:03
and that blew my mind.
22
51345
2705
e aquilo me deixou surpreso.
01:06
My lunch lady had grandkids,
23
54050
1794
A tia da cantina tinha netos,
01:07
and therefore kids,
24
55844
964
e portanto filhos,
01:08
and therefore left school at the end of the day?
25
56808
3255
e portanto ia embora no final do dia?
01:12
I thought she lived in the cafeteria
26
60063
1743
Eu achava que ela morava
na cantina com as colheres.
01:13
with the serving spoons.
27
61806
873
01:14
I had never thought about any of that before.
28
62679
1943
Eu nunca tinha pensado nisso antes.
01:16
Well, that chance encounter inspired my imagination,
29
64622
3732
Bem, aquele encontro aleatório
inspirou minha imaginação,
01:20
and I created the Lunch Lady graphic novel series,
30
68354
3551
e eu criei a série de quadrinhos
A Tia da Cantina,
01:23
a series of comics about a lunch lady
31
71905
2177
uma série de quadrinhos
sobre uma tia da cantina
01:26
who uses her fish stick nunchucks
32
74082
2598
que usa seus nunchakus de peixe grelhado
01:28
to fight off evil cyborg substitutes,
33
76680
2902
para lutar contra substitutas
ciborgues malvadas,
01:31
a school bus monster, and mutant mathletes,
34
79582
3307
um monstro do ônibus escolar
e "matematletas" mutantes,
01:34
and the end of every book,
35
82889
1467
e o final de cada revista,
01:36
they get the bad guy with their hairnet,
36
84356
1506
elas pegam o vilão com sua rede de cabelo,
01:37
and they proclaim, "Justice is served!"
37
85862
3754
e anunciam: "Justiça está na mesa!"
01:41
(Laughter) (Applause)
38
89616
4253
(Risos) (Aplausos)
01:45
And it's been amazing, because the series
39
93869
2607
E tem sido incrível, porque a série
01:48
was so welcomed into the reading lives of children,
40
96476
2893
foi tão bem recebida
pelas crianças em suas leituras,
01:51
and they sent me the most amazing letters
41
99369
2239
e me mandaram
as cartas mais incríveis
01:53
and cards and artwork.
42
101608
2157
e cartões e desenhos.
01:55
And I would notice as I would visit schools,
43
103765
2474
E eu percebia, enquanto visitava escolas,
que os funcionários da cantina
estavam envolvidos no programa
01:58
the lunch staff would be involved in the programming
44
106239
2554
02:00
in a very meaningful way.
45
108793
2146
de maneira muito significativa.
02:02
And coast to coast,
46
110939
1746
e por todo o país,
Todas as tias da cantina
me diziam a mesma coisa:
02:04
all of the lunch ladies told me the same thing:
47
112685
2095
02:06
"Thank you for making a superhero in our likeness."
48
114780
3895
"Obrigada por criar
um super-herói como nós."
02:10
Because the lunch lady has not been treated
49
118675
2769
Porque a tia da cantina nunca foi tratada
02:13
very kindly in popular culture over time.
50
121444
3522
com gentileza na cultura popular.
02:16
But it meant the most to Jeannie.
51
124966
2172
Mas significou ainda mais para Jeannie.
02:19
When the books were first published,
52
127138
1690
Quando os livros foram publicados,
02:20
I invited her to the book launch party,
53
128828
2104
Eu a convidei para a festa
de lançamento do livro.
02:22
and in front of everyone there,
54
130932
1811
e na frente de todos lá,
02:24
everyone she had fed over the years,
55
132743
1297
todos que ela já tinha servido,
02:26
I gave her a piece of artwork and some books.
56
134040
2940
Eu lhe entreguei
uma peça de arte e alguns livros.
02:28
And two years after this photo was taken,
57
136980
2569
E dois anos depois
de essa foto ter sido tirada,
02:31
she passed away,
58
139549
1811
ela faleceu,
e eu fui ao seu velório,
02:33
and I attended her wake,
59
141360
1087
02:34
and nothing could have prepared
me for what I saw there,
60
142447
2839
e nada poderia ter me preparado
para o que eu vi lá,
02:37
because next to her casket was this painting,
61
145286
3488
porque ao lado de seu caixão
estava este desenho,
02:40
and her husband told me it meant so much to her
62
148774
3566
e seu marido me disse
que significava muito para ela
02:44
that I had acknowledged her hard work,
63
152340
2418
que eu tinha reconhecido
seu trabalho duro,
02:46
I had validated what she did.
64
154758
2866
eu tinha validado o que ela fazia.
02:49
And that inspired me to create a day
65
157624
1892
E aquilo me inspirou a criar um dia
02:51
where we could recreate that feeling
66
159516
2250
em que pudéssemos recriar esse sentimento
02:53
in cafeterias across the country:
67
161766
3015
nas cantinas por todo o país:
Dia do Herói do Almoço Escolar,
onde as crianças
02:56
School Lunch Hero Day, a day where kids
68
164781
1653
02:58
can make creative projects for their lunch staff.
69
166434
2858
fazem projetos criativos
para os funcionários da cantina.
03:01
And I partnered with the
School Nutrition Association,
70
169292
2204
E fiz uma parceria com a
Associação de Nutrição Escolar,
03:03
and did you know that a little over 30 million kids
71
171496
3128
e vocês sabiam que
mais de 30 milhões de crianças
participam do almoço
escolar todos os dias?
03:06
participate in school lunch programs every day.
72
174624
1822
03:08
That equals up to a little over five billion lunches
73
176446
3352
Isso resulta em pouco mais
de 5 bilhões de almoços
03:11
made every school year.
74
179798
1507
preparados todo ano escolar.
03:13
And the stories of heroism go well beyond
75
181305
2386
e as histórias de heroísmo vão muito além
de uma crianças recebendo
alguns nuggets extras
03:15
just a kid getting a few extra chicken nuggets
76
183691
1987
03:17
on their lunch tray.
77
185678
1165
em sua bandeja.
03:18
There is Ms. Brenda in California,
78
186843
1709
A sra. Brenda, na Califórnia,
03:20
who keeps a close eye on every
student that comes through her line
79
188552
2789
que fica de olho em cada aluno
que entra na fila
03:23
and then reports back to the guidance counselor
80
191341
2485
e informa o orientador pedagógico
se algo estiver errado.
03:25
if anything is amiss.
81
193826
1350
Há as tias da cantina em Kentucky
03:27
There are the lunch ladies in Kentucky
82
195176
1424
03:28
who realized that 67 percent of their students
83
196600
2635
que perceberam que 67% dos alunos
dependiam daquelas refeições
todos os dias.
03:31
relied on those meals every day,
84
199235
1973
03:33
and they were going without food over the summer,
85
201208
2116
e ficavam sem comida durante o verão,
03:35
so they retrofitted a school bus
86
203324
2024
então elas adaptaram um ônibus escolar
03:37
to create a mobile feeding unit,
87
205348
1752
em uma unidade móvel
de alimentação,
03:39
and they traveled around the neighborhoods
88
207100
1235
e dirigiam pela vizinhança
03:40
feedings 500 kids a day during the summer.
89
208335
2799
alimentando 500 crianças
por dia durante o verão.
03:43
And kids made the most amazing projects.
90
211134
2595
E as crianças fizeram
os projetos mais incríveis.
03:45
I knew they would.
91
213729
1050
Eu já esperava.
03:46
Kids made hamburger cards
92
214779
1612
Fizeram cartões de hambúrguer
03:48
that were made out of construction paper.
93
216391
1994
que eram feitos de cartolina.
03:50
They took photos of their lunch lady's head
94
218385
1901
Tiraram fotos da tia da cantina
e colaram por cima da heroína
das minhas histórias
03:52
and plastered it onto my cartoon lunch lady
95
220286
1808
03:54
and fixed that to a milk carton
96
222094
1793
e colocaram numa caixa de leite
03:55
and presented them with flowers.
97
223887
2486
e presentearam-lhes com flores.
03:58
And they made their own comics,
98
226373
2003
E fizeram seus próprios quadrinhos,
com a tia da cantina dos quadrinhos
04:00
starring the cartoon lunch lady
99
228376
1361
04:01
alongside their actual lunch ladies.
100
229737
2223
junto com suas próprias tias da cantina.
04:03
And they made thank you pizzas,
101
231960
1936
E fizeram pizzas de agradecimento,
04:05
where every kid signed a different topping
102
233896
1915
onde cada criança
assinou um sabor diferente
04:07
of a construction paper pizza.
103
235811
2959
de uma pizza de cartolina.
04:10
For me, I was so moved by the response
104
238770
3600
Para mim, eu fiquei comovido com a reação
04:14
that came from the lunch ladies,
105
242370
1979
que veio das tias da cantina,
04:16
because one woman said to me, she said,
106
244349
1879
porque uma mulher me disse, ela disse,
04:18
"Before this day, I felt like I was
107
246228
2535
"Antes deste dia, eu me sentia
04:20
at the end of the planet at this school.
108
248763
2437
como se estivesse
no fim do mundo nesta escola.
04:23
I didn't think that anyone noticed us down here."
109
251200
2375
Eu não achava que alguém
se lembrava de nós aqui."
04:25
Another woman said to me,
110
253575
1867
Outra mulher me disse:
04:27
"You know, what I got out of this
111
255442
2548
"Sabe, o que eu tirei disso foi que
04:29
is that what I do is important."
112
257990
2954
o que eu faço é importante."
04:32
And of course what she does is important.
113
260944
2340
E, claro, o que ela faz é importante.
04:35
What they all do is important.
114
263284
2104
O que todas fazem é importante.
04:37
They're feeding our children every single day,
115
265388
3389
Estão alimentando
nossas crianças todos os dias,
04:40
and before a child can learn,
116
268777
2459
e antes de uma criança poder aprender,
04:43
their belly needs to be full,
117
271236
2530
sua barriga precisa estar cheia,
e essas mulheres e homens
04:45
and these women and men
118
273766
1778
estão trabalhando
na linha de frente para criar
04:47
are working on the front lines to create
119
275544
1923
04:49
an educated society.
120
277467
2203
uma sociedade bem educada.
04:51
So I hope that

04:54
you don't wait for School Lunch Hero Day

123
284341
2035
para agradecer
seus funcionários da cantina,
04:58
and I hope that you remember
124
286376
2048
e espero que se lembrem
05:00
how powerful a thank you can be.
125
288424

do poder que um "obrigado" pode ter.

A thank you can change a life.
