ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marcus Byrne - Entomologist
Marcus Byrne is fascinated by the way insects, particularly the intrepid dung beetle, have hardwired solutions to the challenges posed by their environments. Could they help humans solve problems?

Why you should listen

Marcus Byrne is professor of zoology and entomology at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa. His research explores what humans can learn from insects. One of the big questions he's focused on: how can we control alien weeds, which threaten biodiversity? Byrne believes that insects may hold the 'magic bullet' for how to restrain the growth of these plants, which jockey for resources with native flora and fauna.

Byrne's work has also focused on the unique mechnics of the dung beetle. His research has shown that the dung beetle has a highly effective visual navigation system, that allows them to roll balls of animal dung with precision back to their home, even in the dark of night and the hottest of conditions. Byrne wonders: can this beetle teach humans how to solve complex visual problems?

03:51
The first is how it dealsoferte with this obstacleobstacol
68
215119
2562
În primul rând, cum se descurcă
03:53
that we'vene-am put in its way. See, look, it does a little dancedans,
69
217681
2888
dacă vrem să-i tăiem calea.
Vedeți, face un mic dans
03:56
and then it carriespoartă on in exactlyexact the samela fel directiondirecţie
70

A little dancedans, and then headsCapete off in a particularspecial directiondirecţie.
72
227193
3766
Un mic dans, apoi o ia într-o anumită direcție.
04:06
So clearlyclar this animalanimal knowsștie where it's going
73
230959
3377
E clar că știe unde merge,
04:10
and it knowsștie where it wants to go,
74
234336
1339
unde dorește să ajungă,
04:11
and that's a very, very importantimportant thing,
75
235675
1885
iar asta e foarte important
04:13
because if you think about it, you're at the dunggunoi pilemorman,
76
237560
2415
pentru că, gândiți-vă, sunteți la grămada de bălegar,
04:15
you've got this great bigmare pieplacinta that you want to get away from everybodytoata lumea elsealtfel,
77
239975
4523
aveți acest minunat morman pe care vreți

04:20
and the quickestcel mai rapid way to do it is in a straightdrept linelinia.
78
244498
2893
și cea mai rapidă cale de-a o face e în linie dreaptă.
04:23
So we gavea dat them some more taskssarcini to dealafacere with,
79
247391
4379
Le-am mai dat și alte sarcini,
04:27
and what we did here is we turnedîntoarse the worldlume
80
251770
4160
aici le-am modificat direcția.
04:31
undersub theiral lor feetpicioare. And watch its responseraspuns.
81
255930
3679
Priviți reacția.
04:41
So this animalanimal has actuallyde fapt had the wholeîntreg worldlume
82
265287
2796
Acestei insecte i s-a schimbat complet direcția,
04:43
turnedîntoarse undersub its feetpicioare. It's turnedîntoarse by 90 degreesgrade.
83
268083
2847
la 90 de grade,
04:46
But it doesn't flinchclipit. It knowsștie exactlyexact where it wants to go,
84
270930
2472
dar nu se dezorientează, știe exact unde vrea să ajungă
04:49
and it headsCapete off in that particularspecial directiondirecţie.
85
273402
2968
și se îndreaptă într-o anumită direcție.
04:52
So our nextUrmător → questionîntrebare then was,
86
276370
2192
Ne-am pus următoarea întrebare,
04:54
how are they doing this?
87
278562
1960
cum fac asta?
04:56
What are they doing? And there was a cuetac that was availabledisponibil to us.
88
280522
3449
Ce fac de fapt? Aveam un singur indiciu.
04:59
It was that everyfiecare now and then they'dle-ar climba urca on toptop of the ballminge
89
283971
3127
Din când în când se urcau pe bilă
05:02
and they'dle-ar take a look at the worldlume around them.
90
287098
2632
și se uitau în jur.
05:05
And what do you think they could be looking at
91
289730
1720
La ce credeți că se puteau uita
05:07
as they climba urca on toptop of the ballminge?
92
291450

05:09
What are the obviousevident cuesindicii that this animalanimal could use
93
293126
3555
Ce indicatoare evidente putea folosi
05:12
to directdirect its movementcirculaţie? And the mostcel mai obviousevident one
94
296681
4178
pentru a se orienta? Cel mai la îndemână
05:16
is to look at the skycer, and so we thought,
95
300859
4219
e să privească cerul, așa că ne-am întrebat
05:20
now what could they be looking at in the skycer?
96
305078
2264
la ce se pot uita pe cer?
05:23
And the obviousevident thing to look at is the sunsoare.
97
307342
4109
Evident că la soare.
05:27
So a classicclasic experimentexperiment here,
98
311451
2954
Aici e un experiment clasic
05:30
in that what we did was we movedmutat the sunsoare.
99

05:33
What we're going to do now is shadeumbra the sunsoare with a boardbord
100
317944

Vom face umbră cu un placaj,
05:36
and then movemișcare the sunsoare with a mirroroglindă

apoi vom muta soarele cu ajutorul unei oglinzi

to a completelycomplet differentdiferit positionpoziţie.
102
322655
1866
într-o cu totul altă poziție.
05:40
And look at what the beetlegândac does.
103
324521
1912
Priviți mica vietate.
05:42
It does a little doubledubla dancedans,
104
326433
2831
Face un mic dans dublu
05:45
and then it headsCapete back in exactlyexact the samela fel directiondirecţie
105
329264

apoi se întoarce spre aceeași direcție
05:47
it wenta mers in the first placeloc.
106
331543
2409
din care a pornit.
05:49
What happensse întâmplă now? So clearlyclar they're looking at the sunsoare.
107
333952
3727
Ce se întâmplă acum?
E evident că se uită la soare.
05:53
The sunsoare is a very importantimportant cuetac in the skycer for them.
108
337679
3262
Acesta e un reper foarte important pentru ei.
05:56
The thing is the sunsoare is not always availabledisponibil to you,
109
340941
2625
Soarele nu e întotdeauna pe cer,
05:59
because at sunsetapus de soare it disappearsdispare belowde mai jos the horizonorizont.
110
343566
4416
pentru că la apus dispare.
06:03
What is happeninglucru in the skycer here
111
347982
2584
Aici, pe cer,
06:06
is that there's a great bigmare patternmodel of polarizedpolarizate lightușoară in the skycer
112

3659
avem un model de lumină polarizată

06:13
But the sunsoare is at the horizonorizont over here
114
357976

Dar soarele e la orizont aici
06:17

06:34
What we do is we get a great bigmare polarizationpolarizare filterfiltru,

129
402952

spre direcția în care mergea iniţial.
07:02
So obviouslyevident beetlesgândaci can see polarizedpolarizate lightușoară.
130
406874
5817
E clar că gândacii pot vedea lumina polarizată.
07:08
Okay, so what we'vene-am got so fardeparte is,
131
412691
2757
OK, până acum știm
07:11
what are beetlesgândaci doing? They're rollingrulare ballsbile.
132
415448
2776
că gândacii rostogolesc aceste bile.
07:14
How are they doing it? Well, they're rollingrulare them in a straightdrept linelinia.
133
418224
3015
Cum o fac? O fac în linie dreaptă.
07:17
How are they maintainingmentine it in a particularspecial straightdrept linelinia?
134
421239
3578
Cum reușesc să mențină acest traseu?
07:20
Well, they're looking at celestialCelestial cuesindicii in the skycer,
135
424817
2695
Se bazează pe anumite indicii cerești,
07:23
some of whichcare you and I can't see.
136
427512
2244
pe care noi nu le putem vedea.
07:25
But how do they pickalege up those celestialCelestial cuesindicii?
137
429756
1684
Dar cum sesizează aceste indicii?
07:27
That was what was of interestinteres to us nextUrmător →.
138
431440
3044
Asta ne-a interesat mai departe.
07:30
And it was this particularspecial little behaviorcomportament, the dancedans,
139
434484
3188
Credem că acest comportament particular, dansul,
07:33
that we thought was importantimportant, because look,
140
437672
2919
are un rol important pentru că, priviți,
07:36
it takes a pausepauză everyfiecare now and then,
141
440591
1556
ia din când în când o pauză
07:38
and then headsCapete off in the directiondirecţie that it wants to go in.
142
442147
4479
apoi se îndreaptă în direcția pe care și-a propus-o.
07:42
So what are they doing when they do this dancedans?
143
446626
4237
Ce fac ei de fapt prin acest dans?
07:46
How fardeparte can we pushApăsaţi them before they will reorientatereorientate themselvesînșiși?
144
450863
4342
Cât de mult putem să-i abatem înainte de a se reorienta?
07:51
And in this experimentexperiment here, what we did was we forcedforţat them
145
455205
3496
În acest experiment, i-am făcut
07:54
into a channelcanal, and you can see he wasn'tnu a fost
146
458701
2662
să intre în acest canal, puteți vedea
07:57
particularlyîn special forcedforţat into this particularspecial channelcanal,
147
461363
2738
că nu a fost forțat să intre exact în acest canal
08:00
and we graduallytreptat displacedstrămutate the beetlegândac by 180 degreesgrade
148
464101
5298
și puțin câte puțin, am rotit gândacul cu 180 de grade,
08:05
untilpana cand this individualindividual endscapete up going in exactlyexact the oppositeopus directiondirecţie
149
469399
3736
până când a ajuns să se deplaseze în direcția opusă
08:09
that it wanted to go in, in the first placeloc.
150
473135
2565
celei în care voia să meargă inițial.
08:11
And let's see what his reactionreacţie is
151
475700
2801
Să-i vedem reacția
08:14
as he's headedintitulat throughprin 90 degreesgrade here,
152
478501
2610
pe măsură ce se îndreaptă cu 90 de grade
08:17
and now he's going to -- when he endscapete up down here,
153
481111
2104
și cum va fi când va ajunge aici
08:19
he's going to be 180 degreesgrade in the wronggresit directiondirecţie.
154
483215
3047
la 180 de grade, în direcție greșită.
08:22
And see what his responseraspuns is.
155
486262
2298
Vedeți-i răspunsul.
08:24
He does a little dancedans, he turnstransformă around,
156
488560
3193
Face un mic dans, se întoarce
08:27
and headsCapete back in this. He knowsștie exactlyexact where he's going.
157
491753
3734
și merge înapoi.
Știe exact unde vrea să meargă.
08:31
He knowsștie exactlyexact what the problemproblemă is,
158
495487
2279
Știe exact care-i problema,
08:33
and he knowsștie exactlyexact how to dealafacere with it,
159
497766
1595
știe și cum s-o rezolve,
08:35
and the dancedans is this transitiontranziție behaviorcomportament
160
499361
2701
iar dansul e comportamentul acestei tranziții
08:37
that allowspermite them to reorientatereorientate themselvesînșiși.
161
502062
2809
ce le permite să se reorienteze.
08:40
So that's the dancedans, but after spendingcheltuire manymulți yearsani
162
504871
4792
Deci ăsta-i dansul, dar după ce am petrecut mulți ani
08:45
sittingședință in the AfricanAfricane bushtufiș watchingvizionarea dunggunoi beetlesgândaci on nicefrumos hotFierbinte dayszi,
163
509663
3656
studiind gândacii de bălegar din savana africană,
08:49
we noticeda observat that there was anothero alta behaviorcomportament
164
513319
2351
am mai observat un alt comportament
08:51
associatedasociate with the dancedans behaviorcomportament.
165
515670
2489
asociat cu dansul.
08:54
EveryFiecare now and then, when they climba urca on toptop of the ballminge,
166
518159
3938
Din când în când, după ce se urcă pe bilă,
08:57
they wipesterge theiral lor facefață.
167
522097
3406
se șterg pe față.
09:01
And you see him do it again.
168
525503
2963
Iată, o face din nou.
09:04
Now we thought, now what could be going on here?
169
528466
2981
Ne-am întrebat, de ce-ar face asta?
09:07
ClearlyÎn mod clar the groundsol is very hotFierbinte, and when the groundsol is hotFierbinte,
170
531447
2904
E clar că pământul e încins, iar când e foarte cald,
09:10
they dancedans more oftende multe ori, and when they do this particularspecial dancedans,
171
534351
2735
dansează mai des și când dansează în acest mod,
09:12
they wipesterge the bottomfund of theiral lor facefață.
172
537086
1970
își șterg față.
09:14
And we thought that it could be a thermoregulatorytermoreglare behaviorcomportament.
173
539056
2699
Am crezut că poate fi pentru reglarea temperaturii.
09:17
We thought that maybe what they're doing is tryingîncercat to
174
541755
2010
Poate că fac asta ca să se desprindă de sol
09:19
get off the hotFierbinte soilsol and alsode asemenea spittingscuipa ontope theiral lor facefață
175
543765
3441
și să-și răcorească
09:23
to coolmisto theiral lor headcap down.
176
547206
2416
capul cu salivă.
09:25
So what we did was designproiecta a couplecuplu of arenasarene.
177
549622
4442
Am proiectat două suprafețe,
09:29
one was hotFierbinte, one was coldrece.
178
554064
2099
una fierbinte, cealaltă rece.
09:32
We shadednuanțat this one. We left that one hotFierbinte.
179
556163
2377
Pe asta am umbrit-o, pe cealaltă am lăsat-o
să se încălzească.
09:34
And then what we did was we filmedfilmat them with a thermaltermică cameraaparat foto.
180
558540
3467
I-am filmat cu o cameră cu infraroșu.
09:37
So what you're looking at here is a heatcăldură imageimagine
181
562007
4416
Deci aici puteți vedea o imagine termică
09:42
of the systemsistem, and what you can see here emergingîn curs de dezvoltare
182
566423
3921
și puteți vedea că din fecale
09:46
from the poopoo is a coolmisto dunggunoi ballminge.
183
570344
3609
se face o bilă de bălegar.
09:49
So the truthadevăr is, if you look at the temperaturetemperatura over here,
184
573953
3279
Adevărul e că dacă ținem cont de temperatura de aici,
09:53
dunggunoi is coolmisto. (LaughterRâs)
185
577232
4980
bălegarul e rece. (Râsete)
09:58
So all we're interestedinteresat in here is comparingcompararea the temperaturetemperatura
186
582212
3218
Vrem să comparăm temperatura
10:01
of the beetlegândac againstîmpotriva the backgroundfundal.
187
585430
2640
gândacului cu cea a mediului.
10:03
So the backgroundfundal here is around about 50 degreesgrade centigradecentigrad.
188
588070
3944
Aici sunt circa 50 de grade Celsius.
10:07
The beetlegândac itselfîn sine and the ballminge are probablyprobabil around about
189
592014
2608
Gângania și bila au în jur de
10:10
30 to 35 degreesgrade centigradecentigrad,
190
594622
2071
30 până la 35 de grade Celsius,
10:12
so this is a great bigmare ballminge of icegheaţă creamcremă
191
596693
2666
deci aceasta-i o bilă mare de înghețată
10:15
that this beetlegândac is now transportingtransportul acrosspeste the hotFierbinte veldVeld.
192
599359
3127
pe care gândacul o transportă prin savana fierbinte.
10:18
It isn't climbingalpinism. It isn't dancingdans, because
193
602486
2703
Nu se urcă pe ea.
Nu dansează
10:21
its bodycorp temperaturetemperatura is actuallyde fapt relativelyrelativ lowscăzut.
194
605189
2841
pentru că acum temperatura corpului e relativ scăzută.
10:23
It's about the samela fel as yoursa ta and mineA mea.
195
608030
3073
E aproape la fel ca a noastră.
10:27
And what's of interestinteres here is that little braincreier is quitedestul de coolmisto.
196
611103
4964
E interesant faptul că are creierul destul de rece.
10:31
But if we contrastcontrast now what happensse întâmplă in a hotFierbinte environmentmediu inconjurator,
197
616067
4307
Dar dacă punem în contrast ce se întâmplă într-un mediu fierbinte,
10:36
look at the temperaturetemperatura of the soilsol.
198
620374
2150
vedeți temperatura solului.
10:38
It's up around 55 to 60 degreesgrade centigradecentigrad.
199
622524
3450
E în jur de 55 până la 60 de grade.
10:41
Watch how oftende multe ori the beetlegândac dancesdansuri.
200
625974
3442
Priviți cât de des dansează
10:45
And look at its frontfață legspicioare. They're roaringlyroaringly hotFierbinte.
201
629416
4542
și priviți picioarele anterioare, sunt foarte fierbinți.
10:49
So the ballminge leavesfrunze a little thermaltermică shadowumbra,
202
633958
2923
Bila face puțină umbră,
10:52
and the beetlegândac climbsascensiuni on toptop of the ballminge
203
636881
1934
gândacul urcă pe ea,
10:54
and wipesServetele its facefață, and all the time it's tryingîncercat to coolmisto itselfîn sine down,
204
638815
4639
își șterge fața și credem că încearcă să se răcorească,
10:59
we think, and avoidevita the hotFierbinte sandnisip that it's walkingmers acrosspeste.
205
643454
5670
și să evite nisipul fierbinte pe care merge.
11:05
And what we did then was put little bootscizme on these legspicioare,
206
649124
3932
Apoi i-am pus mici încălțări pe aceste membre
11:08
because this was a way to testTest if the legspicioare
207
653056
2962
pentru a testa dacă simte sau nu cu membrele
11:11
were involvedimplicat in sensingdetectare the temperaturetemperatura of the soilsol.
208
656018
3758
temperatura solului.
11:15
And if you look over here, with bootscizme they climba urca ontope the ballminge
209
659776
3977
Dacă vă uitați aici, așa încălțați, se urcă pe bilă
11:19
fardeparte lessMai puțin oftende multe ori when they had no bootscizme on.
210
663753
4191
de mult mai puține ori.
11:23
So we describeddescris these as coolmisto bootscizme.
211
667944
2327
Am denumit aceste încălțări „răcoroase”.
11:26
It was a dentaldentar compoundcompus that we used to make these bootscizme.
212
670271
2922
Le-am făcut dintr-un material dentar.
11:29
And we alsode asemenea cooledrăcit down the dunggunoi ballminge, so we were ablecapabil
213
673193
2887
Am răcit și bila de bălegar și am pus-o
11:31
to put the ballminge in the fridgefrigider, gavea dat them a nicefrumos coolmisto dunggunoi ballminge,
214
676080
3649
în frigider, le-am pus la dispoziție o bilă rece.
11:35
and they climbedurcat ontope that ballminge fardeparte lessMai puțin oftende multe ori
215
679729
2551
Au urcat pe ea de mult mai puține ori
11:38
than when they had a hotFierbinte ballminge.
216
682280
1536
decât atunci când era fierbinte.
11:39
So this is calleddenumit stiltingstilting. It's a thermaltermică behaviorcomportament
217
683816
2974
Merge cu pauze urcându-se pe bilă, e un comportament termic
11:42
that you and I do if we crosscruce the beachplajă,
218
686790
1908
pe care-l avem și noi când traversăm plaja,
11:44
we jumpa sari ontope a towelprosop, somebodycineva has this towelprosop --
219
688698
2718
sărim pe un prosop, prosopul aparține cuiva –
11:47
"Sorry, I've jumpeda sărit ontope your towelprosop." --
220
691416
1223
„Scuze, am călcat pe prosopul tău.” –
11:48
and then you scuttleScuttle acrosspeste ontope somebodycineva else'saltcineva towelprosop,
221
692639
2564
apoi ne îndreptăm spre alt prosop,
11:51
and that way you don't burna arde your feetpicioare.
222
695203
2205
astfel nu ne ardem la picioare.
11:53
And that's exactlyexact what the beetlesgândaci are doing here.
223
697408
2801
Exact același lucru fac și gândacii.
11:56
HoweverCu toate acestea, there's one more storypoveste I'd like to shareacțiune with you,
224
700209
3215
Mai e ceva ce doresc să vă împărtășesc,
11:59
and that's this particularspecial speciesspecie.
225
703424
1572
e vorba de această specie.
12:00
It's from a genusgen calleddenumit PachysomaPachysoma.
226
704996
2793
E din genul Pachysoma
12:03
There are 13 speciesspecie in the genusgen, and they have
227
707789
3032
care are 13 specii cu un comportament
12:06
a particularspecial behaviorcomportament that I think you will find interestinginteresant.
228
710821
6138
pe care-l veți găsi interesant.
12:12
This is a dunggunoi beetlegândac. Watch what he's doing.
229
716959
4660
Iată un gândac de bălegar.
Priviți ce face.
12:17
Can you spotloc the differencediferență?
230
721619
2690
Observați diferența?
12:20
They don't normallyîn mod normal go this slowlyîncet. It's in slowîncet motionmişcare.
231
724309
3232
În mod normal nu merge atât de încet.
E cu încetinitorul,
12:23
but it's walkingmers forwardsredirecţionează,
232
727541
1794
dar merge înainte
12:25
and it's actuallyde fapt takingluare a pelletpe peleti of dryuscat dunggunoi with it.
233
729335
3561
și duce cu el o bucată de balegă uscată.
12:28
This is a differentdiferit speciesspecie in the samela fel genusgen
234
732896
2454
Asta-i o altă specie a aceluiași gen,
12:31
but exactlyexact the samela fel foragingcăutare a hranei behaviorcomportament.
235
735350
3872
care are comportament asemănător de căutare a hranei.
12:35
There's one more interestinginteresant aspectaspect of this
236
739222
2791
Un alt aspect interesant al acestui comportament,
12:37
dunggunoi beetle'sGândacul pe behaviorcomportament that we foundgăsite quitedestul de fascinatingfascinant,
237
742013
4303
pe care în considerăm fascinant,
12:42
and that's that it foragesfuraje and provisionsdispozițiile a nestcuib.
238
746316
4506
e că își caută hrana și își aprovizionează cuibul.
12:46
So watch this individualindividual here, and what he's tryingîncercat to do
239
750822
2691
Priviți acest gândac,
12:49
is seta stabilit up a nestcuib.
240
753513
2720
încearcă să facă un cuib.
12:52
And he doesn't like this first positionpoziţie,
241
756233
1709
Nu-i place prima poziționare,
12:53
but he comesvine up with a secondal doilea positionpoziţie,
242
757942
1623
dar face o a doua
12:55
and about 50 minutesminute latermai tarziu, that nestcuib is finishedterminat,
243
759565
3857
și peste vreo 50 de minute cuibul e gata
12:59
and he headsCapete off to forageplante furajere and provisiondispoziţie
244
763422
3727
și se duce să aducă hrană și provizii
13:03
at a pilemorman of dryuscat dunggunoi pelletspelete.
245
767149
2354
de la mai multe grămezi de balegă uscată
13:05
And what I want you to noticeînștiințare is the outwardpasivă pathcale
246
769503
3166
Vreau să comparați calea de plecare
13:08
comparedcomparativ to the homewardspre casă pathcale, and comparecomparaţie the two.
247
772669
4609
cu calea de întoarcere.
13:13
And by and largemare, you'llveți see that the homewardspre casă pathcale
248
777278
2660
În mare, calea de întoarcere
13:15
is fardeparte more directdirect than the outwardpasivă pathcale.
249
779938
2831
e mult mai directă decât cea de plecare.
13:18
On the outwardpasivă pathcale, he's always on the lookoutLookout
250
782769
2815
Când pleacă, gândacul e în căutare
13:21
for a newnou blobpată de cerneală of dunggunoi.
251
785584
2465
de bălegar proaspăt.
13:23
On the way home, he knowsștie where home is,
252
788049
1551
Când se întoarce, știe exact unde e cuibul
13:25
and he wants to go straightdrept to it.
253
789600
3218
și vrea să ajungă repede.
13:28
The importantimportant thing here is that this is not a one-wayîntr-o direcţie tripexcursie,
254
792818
3575
E important faptul că nu-i un traseu cu un singur sens,
13:32
as in mostcel mai dunggunoi beetlesgândaci. The tripexcursie here is repeatedrepetate
255
796393
3390
ca la majoritatea gândacilor de bălegar.
Aici, traseul se repetă
13:35
back and forthmai departe betweenîntre a provisioningasigurarea accesului siteteren and a nestcuib siteteren.

259

Un vecin îi fură bucata de balegă.
13:49
So what we're looking at here
260
813654
3137
Aici studiem un comportament
13:52
is a behaviorcomportament calleddenumit pathcale integrationintegrare.
261
816791
3328
numit integrarea traseului.
13:56
And what's takingluare placeloc is that the beetlegândac
262
820119
2617
Vedeți ce se întâmplă,
13:58
has got a home spotloc, it goesmerge out on a convolutedcomplicate pathcale
263
822736
4303
gândacul are un colț în cuib, iese pe un traseu întortocheat
14:02
looking for foodalimente, and then when it findsdescoperiri foodalimente,
264
827039
3091
în căutare de hrană și când o găsește,
14:06
it headsCapete straightdrept home. It knowsștie exactlyexact where its home is.
265
830130
4308
o duce direct acasă.
Știe exact care-i direcția.
14:10
Now there's two waysmoduri it could be doing that,
266
834438
3025
Poate face asta prin două metode,
14:13
and we can testTest that by displacingdeplasarea the beetlegândac
267
837463
2960
putem vefirica punând gândacul
14:16
to a newnou positionpoziţie when it's at the foragingcăutare a hranei siteteren.
268
840423
2697
într-o altă poziție când se află la locul de aprovizionare.
14:19
If it's usingutilizând landmarkspuncte de reper, it will find its home.
269
843120
3294
Dacă folosește repere, își va găsi casa.
14:22
If it is usingutilizând something calleddenumit pathcale integrationintegrare,
270
846414
3415
Dacă se folosește de integrarea traseului,
14:25
it will not find its home. It will arriveajunge at the wronggresit spotloc,
271
849829
3784
nu-și va găsi casa.
Va ajunge într-un loc greșit,
14:29
and what it's doing here if it's usingutilizând pathcale integrationintegrare
272
853613
2424
în cazul acesta, gândacul
14:31
is it's countingsocoteală its stepspași or measuringmăsurare the distancedistanţă out in this directiondirecţie.
273
856037
3871
numără pașii sau determină distanța în această direcție.
14:35
It knowsștie the bearingținând home, and it knowsștie it should be in that directiondirecţie.
274
859908
3697
Știe locația casei și știe care-i direcția.
14:39
If you displacedeplasa it, it endscapete up in the wronggresit placeloc.
275
863605
3128
Dacă îl muți, va reveni într-un loc greșit.
14:42
So let's see what happensse întâmplă when we put this beetlegândac
276
866733
2577
Să vedem ce se întâmplă dacă supunem acest gândac
14:45
to the testTest with a similarasemănător experimentexperiment.
277
869310
3316
la un astfel de experiment.
14:48
So here'saici e our cunningviclean experimenterexperimentator.
278
872626
4386
Acesta-i vicleanul experimentator.
14:52
He displacesdeplasează the beetlegândac,
279
877012
2401
Mută gândacul
14:55
and now we have to see what is going to take placeloc.
280
879413
4849
și vrem să vedem ce se va întâmpla.
15:00
What we'vene-am got is a burrowvizuină. That's where the forageplante furajere was.
281
884262
3094
Avem un adăpost.
Aici era hrana.
15:03
The forageplante furajere has been displacedstrămutate to a newnou positionpoziţie.
282
887356
2947
A fost mutată în alt loc.
15:06
If he's usingutilizând landmarkpunct de reper orientationorientarea,
283
890303
2359
Dacă se orientează prin repere,
15:08
he should be ablecapabil to find the burrowvizuină,
284
892662
1760
va putea găsi noul adăpost
15:10
because he'lliad be ablecapabil to recognizerecunoaşte the landmarkspuncte de reper around it.
285
894422
2723
pentru că va recunoaște reperele din jur.
15:13
If he's usingutilizând pathcale integrationintegrare,
286
897145
3043
Dacă folosește integrarea traseului,
15:16
then it should endSfârşit up in the wronggresit spotloc over here.
287
900188
3724
va reveni în acest loc greșit.
15:19
So let's watch what happensse întâmplă
288
903912
2310
Să vedem ce se întâmplă
15:22
when we put the beetlegândac throughprin the wholeîntreg testTest.
289
906222
3291
când supunem gândacul la întregul test.
15:25
So there he is there.
290
909513
1996
Iată gândacul.
15:27
He's about to headcap home, and look what happensse întâmplă.
291
911509

E pe cale de-a se întoarce acasă, priviți ce se întâmplă.
15:33
ShameRuşine.
292
917769
2493
Rușine.
15:36
It hasn'tnu are a cluecheie.
293
920262
2234
Nu are nicio idee.
15:38
It startsîncepe to searchcăutare for its housecasă in the right distancedistanţă
294

295
925416

15:47
So we know now that this animalanimal usesutilizări pathcale integrationintegrare
296
931391
4218
Acum știm că gândacul folosește integrarea traseului
15:51
to find its way around, and the callousdur experimenterexperimentator
297

15:58
So what we're looking at here are a groupgrup of animalsanimale
299
942809
4055
Deci avem de-a face cu niște animale
16:02
that use a compassbusolă, and they use the sunsoare as a compassbusolă
300

2079
ce folosesc o busolă, folosesc soarele ca busolă
16:04
to find theiral lor way around,
301

pentru a se orienta
16:06
and they have some sortfel of systemsistem
302
950583

303

16:10

Știm că aceste specii
16:14

305

306

16:22
We don't know yetinca what dunggunoi beetlesgândaci use.
307
966226
2823
Încă nu știm cum fac asta.
16:24
So what have we learnedînvățat from these animalsanimale
308
969049
2279
Ce am învățat de la aceste animale
16:27

309

16:30
Well, we know that they can rollrulou ballsbile in a straightdrept linelinia
310
974329
4111
Știm că pot rostogoli bile în linie dreaptă
16:34

16:36
We know that the dancedans behaviorcomportament is an orientationorientarea behaviorcomportament
312
980585
3128
Știm că dansul e un comportament de orientare,
16:39
and it's alsode asemenea a thermoregulationtermoreglare behaviorcomportament,
313

și știm că folosesc un sistem de integrare a traseului

putem învăța foarte multe
