ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Full - Biologist
Robert Full studies cockroach legs and gecko feet. His research is helping build tomorrow's robots, based on evolution's ancient engineering.

Why you should listen

UC Berkeley biologist Robert Full is fascinated by the motion of creatures like cockroaches, crabs and geckos having many legs, unusual feet or talented tails. He has led an effort to demonstrate the value of learning from Nature by the creating interdisciplinary collaborations of biologists, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists from academia and industry. He founded CiBER, the Center for interdisciplinary Bio-inspiration in Education and Research, and the Poly-PEDAL Laboratory, which studies the Performance, Energetics and Dynamics of Animal Locomotion (PEDAL) in many-footed creatures (Poly).

His research shows how studying a diversity of animals leads to the discovery of general principles which inspire the design of novel circuits, artificial muscles, exoskeletons, versatile scampering legged search-and-rescue robots and synthetic self-cleaning dry adhesives based on gecko feet. He is passionate about discovery-based education leading to innovation -- and he even helped Pixar’s insect animations in the film A Bug's Life.

06:21
Prettyfrumos powerfulputernic.
131

Destul de puternic.
06:23
So we then wenta mers back and lookedprivit at the animalanimal.
132
365000

06:25
And we rana fugit it up a surfacesuprafaţă.
133
367000

06:27
But this time what we did is we put a slipperyalunecos patchplasture
134
369000
2000
06:29
that you see in yellowgalben there.
135
371000
2000
pe care îl vedeţi în galben acolo.
06:31
And watch on the right what the animalanimal is doing with its tailcoadă

06:39

143
392000
4000
06:57
This is incredibleincredibil.
144
399000
2000
Asta e incredibil.
06:59
The engineersingineri had a really good ideaidee.
145
401000
3000
07:02
And then of coursecurs we wonderedse întreba,
146
404000
2000
Şi apoi bineînţeles, ne-am întrebat,
07:04
okay, they have an activeactiv tailcoadă, but let's pictureimagine them.
147
406000
2000
07:06
They're climbingalpinism up a wallperete, or a treecopac.
148
408000
3000
07:09
And they get to the toptop and let's say there's some leavesfrunze there.
149
411000
3000
07:12
And what would happenîntâmpla if they climbedurcat on the undersideinferioară of that leaffrunze,
150
414000
3000
07:15
and there was some windvânt, or we shookscuturat it?
151
417000
3000
şi a fost ceva vânt sau... am scuturat-o?
07:18
And we did that experimentexperiment, that you see here.
152
420000
3000
07:21
(ApplauseAplauze)
153
423000
1000
(Aplauze)
07:22
And this is what we discovereddescoperit.
154
424000
2000
Şi asta e ceea ce am descoperit.
07:24
Now that's realreal time. You can't see anything.
155
426000
2000
Acum, asta e în timp real. Nu puteţi vedea nimic.
07:26
But there it is slowedîncetinit down.
156
428000
2000
Dar iată-l încetinit.
07:30
What we discovereddescoperit was the world'slume fastestcel mai rapid air-rightingredresare de aer responseraspuns.
157
432000
3000
07:33
For those of you who remembertine minte your physicsfizică, that's a zero-angular-momentumzero-unghiulară-impuls
158
435000
2000
07:35
rightingredresare responseraspuns. But it's like a catpisică.
159
437000
2000
cu moment cinetic zero. Dar, e ca o pisică.
07:37
You know, catspisici fallingcădere. CatsPisici do this. They twistTwist theiral lor bodiesorganisme.
160
439000
3000
Ştiţi voi, pisici căzând. Pisicile fac asta. Îşi răsucesc corpurile.
07:40
But geckosGecko do it better.
161
442000
2000
Dar gecko-urile o fac mai bine.
07:42
And they do it with theiral lor tailcoadă.
162
444000
3000
Şi ei o fac cu coada lor.
07:45
So they do it with this activeactiv tailcoadă as they swingleagăn around.
163
447000
3000
07:48
And then they always landteren in the sortfel of supermanSuperman skydivingparaşutism posturepostură.
164
450000
4000
07:54
Okay, now we wonderedse întreba, if we were right,
165
456000
2000
Okay, acum ne-am întrebat: dacă aveam dreptate,
07:56
we should be ablecapabil to testTest this in a physicalfizic modelmodel, in a robotrobot.
166
458000
3000
07:59
So for TEDTED we actuallyde fapt builtconstruit a robotrobot,
167
461000
2000
08:01
over there, a prototypeprototip, with the tailcoadă.
168
463000
3000
acolo, un prototip, cu coadă.
08:04
And we're going to attemptatentat, încercare the first air-rightingredresare de aer responseraspuns
169
466000
2000
08:06
in a tailcoadă, with a robotrobot.
170
468000
2000
într-o coadă, cu un robot.
08:08
If we could have the lightslumini on it.
171
470000
2000
Dacă am putea avea luminile pe el.
08:10
Okay, there it goesmerge.
172
472000
5000
Okay, începe.
08:15
And showspectacol the videovideo.
173
477000
2000
Şi arătaţi clipul.
08:20
There it is.
174
482000
2000
Iată-l
08:22
And it workslucrări just like it does in the animalanimal.
175
484000
3000
08:25
So all you need is a swingleagăn of the tailcoadă to right yourselftu.
176
487000
4000
08:29
(ApplauseAplauze)
177
491000
2000
(Aplauze)
08:31
Now, of coursecurs, we were normallyîn mod normal frightenedînspăimântat
178
493000
2000
Acum, desigur, eram bineînţeles speraţi
08:33
because the animalanimal has no glidingalunecare adaptationsadaptări,
179
495000
2000
08:35
so we thought, "Oh that's okay. We'llVom put it in a verticalvertical windvânt tunneltunel.
180
497000
4000
aşa că ne-am gândit, "A, asta-i OK. Îl vom pune într-un tunel verical aerodinamic.
08:39
We'llVom blowa sufla the airaer up, we'llbine give it a landingaterizare targetţintă, a treecopac trunktrompă,
181
501000
3000
08:42
just outsidein afara the plexi-glasssticla PLEXI enclosureîmprejmuire, and see what it does.
182
504000
4000
08:46
(LaughterRâs)
183
508000
1000
(Hohote de râs)
08:47
So we did. And here is what it does.
184
509000
3000
Aşa am făcut. Şi aici e ce face.
08:50
So the windvânt is comingvenire from the bottomfund. This is slowedîncetinit down 10 timesori.
185
512000
5000
Deci, vântul vine de jos. Ăsta este încetinit de 10 ori.
08:55
It does an equilibriumechilibru glidealunecare. HighlyFoarte controlleddirijat.
186
517000
4000
Face o planare în echilibru. Foarte controlată.
08:59
This is sortfel of incredibleincredibil. But actuallyde fapt it's quitedestul de beautifulfrumoasa,
187
521000
3000
Asta e oarecum incredibil. Dar, de fapt, e foarte frumos
09:02
when you take a pictureimagine of it.
188
524000
3000
când îi faci o poză.
09:05
And it's better than that, it -- just in the slidealuneca -- maneuversmanevre in mid-airMid-aer.
189
527000
5000
09:10
And the way it does it, is it takes its tailcoadă
190
532000
2000
Şi felul în care o face, e: îşi ia coada
09:12
and it swingsleagăne it one way to yawcherciu left, and it swingsleagăne its other way to yawcherciu right.
191
534000
4000
09:16
So we can maneuvermanevra this way.
192
538000
2000
Deci poate să manevreze în felul acesta.
09:18
And then -- we had to filmfilm this severalmai mulți timesori to believe this --
193
540000
3000
09:21
it alsode asemenea does this. Watch this.
194
543000
3000
face şi asta. Priviţi asta.
09:24
It oscillatesoscilează its tailcoadă up and down like a dolphindelfin.
195
546000
2000
09:26
It can actuallyde fapt swimînot throughprin the airaer.
196
548000
3000
Poate de fapt să înoate prin aer.
09:29
But watch its frontfață legspicioare. Can you see what they are doing?
197
551000
5000
Dar priviţi-i picioarele din faţă. Puteţi vedea ce fac?
09:34
What does that mean for the originorigine of flappingaripi flightzbor?
198
556000
3000
09:37
Maybe it's evolvedevoluat from comingvenire down from treescopaci,
199
559000
3000
Poate că a evoluat coborând din copaci
09:40
and tryingîncercat to controlControl a glidealunecare.
200
562000
2000
şi încercând să controleze o planare.
09:42
StayStaţi tunedreglate for that.
201
564000
2000
Rămâneţi pe frecvenţă pentru asta.
09:44
(LaughterRâs)
202
566000
2000
(Hohote de râs)
09:46
So then we wonderedse întreba, "Can they actuallyde fapt maneuvermanevra with this?"
203
568000
3000
Aşa că apoi ne-am întrebat, "Chiar pot manevra cu asta?"
09:49
So there is the landingaterizare targetţintă. Could they steerpilota towardscătre it
204
571000
3000
Aşa că, aici este ţinta de aterizare. Pot ei cârmi spre ea
09:52
with these capabilitiescapabilități? Here it is in the windvânt tunneltunel.
205
574000
2000
cu aceste abilităţi? Aici este în tunelul aerodinamic
09:54
And it certainlycu siguranță looksarată like it.
206
576000
2000
şi în mod cert aşa pare.
09:56
You can see it even better from down on toptop.
207
578000
3000
09:59
Watch the animalanimal.
208
581000
2000
Priviţi animalul.
10:02
DefinitelyCu siguranta movingin miscare towardscătre the landingaterizare targetţintă.
209
584000
2000
Categoric mişcându-se spre locul de aterizare.
10:04
Watch the whipbici of its tailcoadă as it does it. Look at that.
210
586000
4000
10:08
It's unbelievablenecrezut.
211
590000
2000
Este incredibil.
10:10
So now we were really confusedconfuz,
212
592000
2000
Aşa că acum eram chiar confuzi.
10:12
because there are no reportsrapoarte of it glidingalunecare.
213
594000
2000
Deoarece nu există atestări cu el planând.
10:14
So we wenta mers, "Oh my god, we have to go to the fieldcamp,
214
596000
2000
10:16
and see if it actuallyde fapt does this."
215
598000
2000
şi să vedem dacă face într-adevăr asta."
10:18
CompletelyComplet oppositeopus of the way you'dte-ai see it on a naturenatură filmfilm, of coursecurs.
216
600000
3000
10:21
We wonderedse întreba, "Do they actuallyde fapt glidealunecare in naturenatură?"
217
603000
3000
Ne-am întrebat: "Chiar planează în natură?"
10:24
Well we wenta mers to the forestspăduri of SingaporeSingapore and SoutheastSud-Est AsiaAsia.
218
606000
2000
10:26
And the nextUrmător → videovideo you see is the first time we'vene-am showeda arătat this.
219
608000
2000
10:28
This is the actualreal videovideo -- not stagedîn scenă, a realreal researchcercetare videovideo --
220
610000
3000
10:31
of animalanimal glidingalunecare down. There is a redroșu trajectorytraiectorie linelinia.
221
613000
3000
10:34
Look at the endSfârşit to see the animalanimal.
222
616000
2000
Uitaţi-vă la sfârşit să vedeţi animalul.
10:36
But then as it getsdevine closermai aproape to the treecopac,
223
618000
2000
10:38
look at the close-upa închide. And see if you can see it landteren.
224
620000
3000
10:42
So there it comesvine down. There is a geckoGecko at the endSfârşit of that trajectorytraiectorie linelinia.
225
624000
3000
10:45
You see it there? There? Watch it come down.
226
627000
2000
Îl vedeţi acolo? Acolo? Priviţi-l coborând.
10:47
Now watch up there and you can see the landingaterizare. Did you see it hitlovit?
227
629000
3000
Acum, priviţi acolo sus şi puteţi vedea aterizarea. L-aţi văzut nimerind?
10:50
It actuallyde fapt usesutilizări its tailcoadă too,

10:52
just like we saw in the lablaborator.
229
634000

Aşa cum am văzut în laborator.
10:55
So now we can continuecontinua this mutualismmutualism

Deci, acum putem continua acest mutualism
