ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Henry Lin - Student scientist
At 17, Henry Lin won an Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award for his mathematical models of distant galaxy clusters.

Why you should listen

Henry Lin studies the very hot, very large and very strange -- that is, distant galaxy clusters. (Obviously.) Lin, who matriculated at Harvard University in the fall of 2013, thinks we can learn a lot about astrophysics by studying these giant celestial bodies. In early 2013 he won the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award, the second-highest award at the Intel Science Fair, for his models of far-away galaxies. Lin is a graduate of Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Here are some images of clusters of galaxies.
0
934
3334
Këto janë disa imazhe
të grumbullimeve yjore të galaktikave .
00:16
They're exactly what they sound like.
1
4268
1833
Ato janë pikërisht sic ashtu si tingëllojnë .
00:18
They are these huge collections of galaxies,
2
6101
2553
Ata janë këto grupimet e mëdha të galaktikave ,
00:20
bound together by their mutual gravity.
3
8654
2255
te lidhur së bashku
nga graviteti i tyre i perbashket .
00:22
So most of the points that you see on the screen
4
10909
2662
Shumica e pikave që ju shihni në ekran
00:25
are not individual stars,
5
13571
2529
nuk janë yje individuale ,
00:28
but collections of stars, or galaxies.
6
16100
2836
por grumbullime te yjeve ose galaktikave .
00:30
Now, by showing you some of these images,
7
18936
2331
Tani, duke ju treguar disa nga këto imazhe ,
00:33
I hope that you will quickly see that
8
21267
1747
unë shpresoj qe së shpejti të shihni se
00:35
galaxy clusters are these beautiful objects,
9
23014
2680
grupimet yjore te galaktikave
janë këto objektet e bukura ,
00:37
but more than that,
10
25694
1493
por më shume se kaq,
00:39
I think galaxy clusters are mysterious,
11
27187
2663
Unë mendoj se grupimet yjore
te galaktikave janë misterioze ,
00:41
they are surprising,
12
29850
1553
ato janë të papritura ,
00:43
and they're useful.
13
31403
1417
dhe ato janë të dobishme .
00:44
Useful as the universe's most massive laboratories.
14
32820
3531
Te dobishme si laboratorët
më të medhenj të gjithësisë.
00:48
And as laboratories, to describe galaxy clusters
15
36351
3636
Dhe si laboratorë, të përshkruash
grupimet yjore te galaktikave
00:51
is to describe the experiments
16
39987
1865
do te thotë të përshkruash eksperimente
00:53
that you can do with them.
17
41852
1553
që mund të bëni me ta .
00:55
And I think there are four major types,
18
43405
2280
Unë mendoj se ekzistojnë katër lloje kryesore,
00:57
and the first type that I want to describe
19
45685
2584
dhe lloji i parë që dua të përshkruaj
01:00
is probing the very big.
20
48269
2219
është hetimi me i madh .
01:02
So, how big?
21
50488
1695
Pra, sa i madh?
01:04
Well, here is an image of a particular galaxy cluster.
22
52183
4251
Këtu është një imazh i një grumbullimi
yjor të veçantë galaktike.
01:08
It is so massive that the light passing through it
23
56434
2969
Eshtë aq masiv sa që drita qe kalon nëpër të
01:11
is being bent, it's being distorted
24
59403
2615
është duke u perthyer, duke u shtrembëruar
01:14
by the extreme gravity of this cluster.
25
62018
2509
nga graviteti ekstrem i këtij grumbullimi yjor.
01:16
And, in fact, if you look very carefully
26
64527
1804
Dhe, në fakt, në qoftë se ju shikoni
me shumë kujdes
01:18
you'll be able to see rings around this cluster.
27
66331
2700
do të jeni në gjendje që të shikoni
unaza rreth këtij grumbulli .
01:21
Now, to give you a number,
28
69031
1549
Tani, për t'ju dhene ju një numër ,
01:22
this particular galaxy cluster
29
70580
1783
ky grumbullim yjor i veçantë i galaktikës
01:24
has a mass of over one million billion suns.
30
72363
4208
ka një masë prej mbi një milion miliard diejsh .
01:28
It's just mind-boggling how
massive these systems can get.
31
76571
3313
Është thjesht e pa imagjinueshme se
sa masive mund te behen keto sisteme.
01:31
But more than their mass,
32
79884
1501
Por më shumë se masa e tyre ,
01:33
they have this additional feature.
33
81385
1974
ata kanë këtë funksion shtesë .
01:35
They are essentially isolated systems,
34
83359
2344
Ato janë sisteme të izoluara në thelb,
01:37
so if we like, we can think of them
35
85703
2222
kështu që nëse doni,
ne mund të mendojmë per ta
01:39
as a scaled-down version of the entire universe.
36
87925
3270
si një version i zvogeluar i të gjithë universit .
01:43
And many of the questions that we might have
37
91195
2002
Dhe shumë nga pyetjet që ne mund të kemi
01:45
about the universe at large scales,
38
93197
1968
rreth universit në nje shkalle të madhe,
01:47
such as, how does gravity work?
39
95165
1915
sic eshte, si funksionon graviteti?
01:49
might be answered by studying these systems.
40
97080
3032
mund ti përgjigjemi
duke studiuar këto sisteme.
01:52
So that was very big.
41
100112
1333
Kështu që ishte shumë e madhe.
01:53
The second things is very hot.
42
101445
1885
Gjëja e dytë është shumë e nxehtë.
01:55
Okay, if I take an image of a galaxy cluster,
43
103330
2783
Në qoftë se marr një imazh
të një grumbulli yjor galaktike ,
01:58
and I subtract away all of the starlight,
44
106113
2917
dhe heq të gjitha yjet,
02:01
what I'm left with is this big, blue blob.
45
109030
2795
ajo që me mbetet eshte kjo pika e madhe blu.
02:03
This is in false color.
46
111825
1485
Kjo është një ngjyrë e rreme.
02:05
It's actually X-ray light that we're seeing.
47
113310
2349
Në fakt eshte nje rreze-X drita që po shohim.
02:07
And the question is, if it's not galaxies,
48
115659
2661
Dhe pyetja është, nëse nuk jane galaktikat,
02:10
what is emitting this light?
49
118320
2199
cfare është duke e cliruar këtë dritë?
02:12
The answer is hot gas,
50
120519
1900
Përgjigja është gaz i nxehtë,
02:14
million-degree gas --
51
122419
1823
gaz ne miliona grade --
02:16
in fact, it's plasma.
52
124242
1657
në fakt, është plazma .
02:17
And the reason why it's so hot
53
125899
1659
Dhe arsyeja pse është kaq e nxehtë
02:19
goes back to the previous slide.
54
127558
1980
na kthen prapa te faqja e mëparshme.
02:21
The extreme gravity of these systems
55
129538
2740
Graviteti ekstrem i këtyre sistemeve
02:24
is accelerating particles of gas to great speeds,
56
132278
3042
përshpejton grimcat e gazit
në shpejtësi të medha,
02:27
and great speeds means great temperatures.
57
135320
2582
dhe shpejtësi te medha
do të thotë temperatura te larta.
02:29
So this is the main idea,
58
137902
1719
Pra, kjo është ideja kryesore,
02:31
but science is a rough draft.
59
139621
2366
por shkenca është një projekt i vështrirë.
02:33
There are many basic properties about this plasma
60
141987
2551
Ka shumë perberje themelore
në lidhje me këtë plazmën
02:36
that still confuse us,
61
144538
1698
që ende na ngatërron,
02:38
still puzzle us,
62
146236
1333
ende eshte mister,
02:39
and still push our understanding
63
147569
2086
dhe ende shtyn të kuptuarit tonë
02:41
of the physics of the very hot.
64
149655
2039
rreth fizikës per shumë të nxehtat.
02:43
Third thing: probing the very small.
65
151694
3427
Gjëja e tretë : hetimi i shumë te voglave.
02:47
Now, to explain this, I need to tell you
66
155121
2846
Tani, për të shpjeguar këtë,
më duhet t'ju them
02:49
a very disturbing fact.
67
157967
2020
një fakt shumë shqetësues.
02:51
Most of the universe's matter
68
159987
2790
Shumica e materies së universit
02:54
is not made up of atoms.
69
162777
1811
nuk është e përbërë nga atomet .
02:56
You were lied to.
70
164588
1950
Nuk ështe e vërtete.
02:58
Most of it is made up of something
very, very mysterious,
71
166538
3127
Shumica e saj është e përbërë
nga diçka shume, shume misterioze,
03:01
which we call dark matter.
72
169665
2122
të cilen e quajmë "Materia e errët" .
03:03
Dark matter is something that
doesn't like to interact very much,
73
171787
3667
Materia e errët është diçka që
nuk i pelqen të ndërveprojë shumë ,
03:07
except through gravity,
74
175454
1668
perveç përmes gravitetit ,
03:09
and of course we would like to learn more about it.
75
177122
1612
dhe natyrisht ne duam të mësojme
më shumë në lidhje me të .
03:10
If you're a particle physicist,
76
178734
1543
Nëse ju jeni një fizikant grimcash ,
03:12
you want to know what happens
when we smash things together.
77
180277
2509
ju doni të dini se çfarë ndodh
kur perplasim gjërat së bashku
03:14
And dark matter is no exception.
78
182786
1990
Dhe materia e errët nuk bën përjashtim .
03:16
Well, how do we do this?
79
184776
1660
Mire pra si do ta bëjmë këtë?
03:18
To answer that question,
80
186436
1491
Për t'iu përgjigjur kësaj pyetjeje,
03:19
I'm going to have to ask another one,
81
187927
1393
më duhet t'ju bej një pyetje tjetër,
03:21
which is, what happens when galaxy clusters collide?
82
189320
3166
qe është, cfare ndodh kur grupimet yjore
te galaktikave përplasen?
03:24
Here is an image.
83
192486
2310
Ja një imazh.
03:26
Since galaxy clusters are representative
84
194796
3191
Duke qëne se grupimet yjore te galaktikave
janë përfaqësuese
03:29
slices of the universe, scaled-down versions.
85
197987
3124
te pjeseve te universit, ne versionin e zvogeluar.
03:33
They are mostly made up of dark matter,
86
201111
2123
Ato janë kryesisht të përbëra
nga materia e zezë,
03:35
and that's what you see in this bluish purple.
87
203234
2553
dhe është ajo që shihni
në këtë vjollcë ne te kaltërt.
03:37
The red represents the hot gas,
88
205787
1617
E kuqja përfaqëson gazin e nxehtë,
03:39
and, of course, you can see many galaxies.
89
207404
1967
dhe, natyrisht, ju mund të shihni
shumë galaktika.
03:41
What's happened is a particle accelerator
90
209371
2365
Ajo që ndodhi është
një përshpejtues grimcash
03:43
at a huge, huge scale.
91
211736
1891
në një shkallë
shume, shume, të madhe .
03:45
And this is very important,
92
213627
1777
Dhe kjo është shumë e rëndësishme,
03:47
because what it means is that very, very small
93
215404
1883
sepse do të thotë që
shumë, shumë efekte të vogla
03:49
effects that might be difficult to detect in the lab,
94
217287
3084
te cilat jane te vështira
për t'u zbuluar në laborator,
03:52
might be compounded and compounded
95
220371
2179
mund të komplikohen dhe të komplikohen
03:54
into something that we could
possibly observe in nature.
96
222550
3809
në diçka që ne ndoshta
mund te vëzhgojme në natyrë .
03:58
So, it's very funny.
97
226359
1512
Pra, është shumë per te qeshur.
03:59
The reason why galaxy clusters
98
227871
1948
Arsyeja pse grupimet yjore te galaktikave
04:01
can teach us about dark matter,
99
229819
1666
mund të na mësojne për materien e errët,
04:03
the reason why galaxy clusters
100
231485
1750
arsyeja pse grupimet yjore te galaktikave
04:05
can teach us about the physics of the very small,
101
233235
2553
mund të na mësojnë
rreth fizikës e me të vogles,
04:07
is precisely because they are so very big.
102
235788
3031
eshte pikërisht për shkak se
ato janë kaq shumë të mëdha.
04:10
Fourth thing: the physics of the very strange.
103
238819
4085
Gjëja e katërt : fizika e me të çuditshmes.
04:14
Certainly what I've said so far is crazy.
104
242904
3050
Sigurisht ajo që kam thënë deri tani
është shume e çmendur.
04:17
Okay, if there's anything stranger
105
245954
2283
Nëse ka ndonjë gjë të panjohur
04:20
I think it has to be dark energy.
106
248237
2417
mendoj se duhet të jetë energjia e errët,
04:22
If I throw a ball into the air,
107
250654
1717
Nëse hedh një top në ajër,
04:24
I expect it to go up.
108
252371
1798
Unë pres që ai të shkojë lart.
04:26
What I don't expect is that it go up
109
254169
2124
Ajo që nuk pres është qe ai të shkojë lart
04:28
at an ever-increasing rate.
110
256293
2166
me një shpejtesi gjithnjë e në rritje .
04:30
Similarly, cosmologists understand why
111
258459
2745
Në mënyrë të ngjashme,
kozmologët kuptojne pse
04:33
the universe is expanding.
112
261204
1582
universi po zgjerohet.
04:34
They don't understand why it's expanding
113
262786
2168
Ata nuk e kuptojne pse është duke u zgjeruar
04:36
at an ever-increasing rate.
114
264954
1938
në një shkallë gjithnjë në rritje.
04:38
They give the cause of this
115
266892
1678
Ata i japin shkakut te këtij
04:40
accelerated expansion a name,
116
268570
1592
zgjerimi te përshpejtuar një emër,
04:42
and they call it dark energy.
117
270162
1884
dhe e quajnë atë energji te errët.
04:44
And, again, we want to learn more about it.
118
272046
2688
Përsëri, ne duam të mësojmë
më shumë rreth kësaj .
04:46
So, one particular question that we have is,
119
274734
2387
Pra, një pyetje e veçantë që kemi është,
04:49
how does dark energy affect the universe
120
277121
2695
si ndikon energjia e errët tek universi
04:51
at the largest scales?
121
279816
1618
në nje shkallë më të madhe?
04:53
Depending on how strong it is,
122
281434
1459
Ne varësi se sa e fortë është,
04:54
maybe structure forms faster or slower.
123
282893
3261
ndoshta struktura formohet
më shpejt apo më ngadale.
04:58
Well, the problem with the large-scale structure
124
286154
2549
E pra, problemi me nje struktur te zgjeruar
05:00
of the universe is that it's horribly complicated.
125
288703
2338
te universit eshte qe eshte
tmerresisht i kompikuar
05:03
Here is a computer simulation.
126
291041
2329
Këtu është një simulim kompjuterik.
05:05
And we need a way to simplify it.
127
293370
2128
Kemi nevojë për një mënyrë
për ta thjeshtezuar atë .
05:07
Well, I like to think about this using an analogy.
128
295498
3571
E pra, do të doja ta mendoja këtë
duke përdorur një analogji.
05:11
If I want to understand the sinking of the Titanic,
129
299069
2718
Nëse dua të kuptoj fundosjen e Titanikut,
05:13
the most important thing to do
130
301787
1666
gjëja më e rëndësishme për të bërë
05:15
is not to model the little positions
131
303453
1781
nuk është të modeloj cdo pozicion
05:17
of every single little piece of the boat that broke off.
132
305234
2921
te pjesëve te vogla qe ndodheshin
në varkën që u mbyt.
05:20
The most important thing to do is
133
308155
1665
Gjëja më e rëndësishme për të bërë është
05:21
to track the two biggest parts.
134
309820
2001
të ndjek dy pjesët më të mëdha.
05:23
Similarly, I can learn a lot about the universe

Në mënyrë të ngjashme,
mund të mësojmë shumë rreth universit
05:27
at the largest scales
136
315653
1467
në nje shkallë më të zgjeruar
05:29
by tracking its biggest pieces
137
317120
1751
duke ndjekur copat e saj më të mëdha
05:30
and those biggest pieces are clusters of galaxies.
138
318871
3991
dhe ato copat më të mëdha
janë grupimet yjore te galaktikave .
05:34
So, as I come to a close,
139
322862
2956
Pra, duke arritur drejt fundit,
05:37
you might feel slightly cheated.
140
325818
2002
ju mund të ndjeheni pak të mashtruar.
05:39
I mean, I began by talking about
141
327820
2250
dua te them, e filloj duke folur
05:42
how galaxy clusters are useful,
142
330070
2083
se sa grupimet yjore te galaktikave
janë të dobishme,
05:44
and I've given some reasons,
143
332153
1500
dhe kam dhënë disa arsye ,
05:45
but what is their use really?
144
333653
2600
por cili është përdorimi i tyre ne të vërtetë?
05:48
Well, to answer this,
145
336253
2117
E pra, për t'iu përgjigjur kësaj,
05:50
I want to give you a quote by Henry Ford
146
338370
2616
dua t'ju them një kuotë nga Henry Ford
05:52
when he was asked about cars.
147
340986
1486
kur ai u pyet në lidhje me makinat.
05:54
He had this to say:
148
342472
1359
Ai kishte thënë këtë:
05:55
"If I had asked people what they wanted,
149
343831
2289
" Po të kisha pyetur njerëzit se çfarë donin,
05:58
they would have said faster horses."
150
346120
2783
ata do të kishin thene kuaj më te shpejtë. "
06:00
Today, we as a society are faced
151
348903
2501
Sot, ne si shoqëri perballemi
06:03
with many, many difficult problems.
152
351404
2218
me probleme shumë shumë me te vështira.
06:05
And the solutions to these
problems are not obvious.
153
353622
3831
Dhe zgjidhjet për këto probleme
nuk janë të qarta.
06:09
They are not faster horses.
154
357453
2167
Ato nuk janë kuaj me të shpejtë .
06:11
They will require an enormous amount of
155
359620
2242
Ata kërkojnë një sasi te madhe te
06:13
scientific ingenuity.
156
361862
1706
zgjuarsise shkencore .
06:15
So, yes, we need to focus,
157
363568
1586
Pra, duhet të fokusohemi,
06:17
yes, we need to concentrate,
158
365154
1750
po, ne duhet të përqëndrohemi ,
06:18
but we also need to remember that
159
366904
1966
por gjithashtu duhet të kujtojme qe
06:20
innovation, ingenuity, inspiration --
160
368870
2835
risia, zgjuarsia, frymëzimi--
06:23
these things come
161
371705
1332
këto gjëra vijne
06:25
when we broaden our field of vision
162
373037
1688
kur kemi zgjeruar fushën tonë të pamjes
06:26
when we step back
163
374725
1340
kur ne bejme nje hap prapa
06:28
when we zoom out.
164
376065
1349
kur ne zoom out.
06:29
And I can't think of a better way to do this than
165
377414
1823
Nuk mund të mendoj për një mënyrë
më të mirë për të bërë këtë se sa
06:31
by studying the universe around us. Thanks.
