ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Evan Williams - Twitter co-founder
Evan Williams is the co-founder of Twitter, the addictive messaging service that connects the world 140 characters at a time.

Why you should listen

Evan Williams helps the world answer the question "What are you doing?" Twitter, the tiny, free world-changing app Williams helped launch, has become a vital connector of people and communities (as well as a fantastic way to keep up with Shaq and Demi Moore).

Before Williams worked on Twitter, he was part of a previous revolution in mass communication, Blogger, while working at Google. He left Google in 2004 to launch the podcasting service Odeo, and Twitter spun out from this in 2006 as a side project based on an idea of Jack Dorsey's.

I announced公布 a company公司 I was working加工 with at the time

Odeo.

Odeo。
00:26
And because of that announcement

00:27
we got a big article文章 in The New York纽约 Times,

00:41
One of the guys I hired雇用 was an engineer工程师 named命名 Jack插口 Dorsey多尔西,
10
23000
3846
00:45
and a year later后来, when we were trying to decide决定 which哪一个 way to go with Odeo公司Odeo,
11
26846
3938
00:49
Jack插口 presented呈现 an idea理念 he'd他会 been tinkering修修补补 around with for a number of years年份
12
30784
4662
Jack
00:54
that was based基于 around sending发出 simple简单 status状态 updates更新 to friends朋友.
13
35446
3554
00:57
We were also playing播放 with SMS短信 at the time at Odeo公司Odeo,
14
39000
2246
Odeo
01:00
so we kind of put two and two together一起,
15
41246
1846
01:01
and in early 2006 we launched推出 Twitter推特 as a side project项目 at Odeo公司Odeo.
16
43092
4953
01:06
Now, it's hard to justify辩解 doing a side project项目
17
48045
2478
01:09
at a startup启动, where focus焦点 is so critical危急,
18
50523
2353
01:11
but I had actually其实 launched推出 Blogger博客 as a side project项目
19
52876
2339
01:14
to my previous以前 company公司,
20
55215
1323
01:15
thinking思维 it was just a little thing we'd星期三 do on the side,
21
56538
2462
01:17
and it ended结束 up taking服用 over not only the company公司,
22
59000
2600
01:20
but my life for the next下一个 five or six years年份.
23
61600
2400
01:22
So I learned学到了 to follow跟随 hunches预感
24
64000
2337
01:25
even though虽然 you can't necessarily一定 justify辩解 them
25
66337
1863
01:27
or know where they're going to go.
26
68200
1429
01:28
And that's kind of what's happened发生 with Twitter推特, time after time.
27
69629
3371
01:31
So, for those of you unfamiliar
28
73000
2000
01:33
Twitter推特 is based基于 around a very simple简单, seemingly似乎 trivial不重要的 concept概念.
29
75000
3461
01:37
You say what you're doing in 140 characters人物 or less,
30
78461
3215
01:40
and people who are interested有兴趣 in you get those updates更新.
31
81676
3324
01:43
If they're really interested
32
85000
1446
01:45
they get the update更新 as a text文本 message信息 on their cell细胞 phone电话.
33
86446
3138
01:48
So, for instance, I may可能 Twitter推特 right now
34
89584
2416
01:50
that I'm giving a talk at TEDTED.
35
92000
2044
01:52
And in my case案件, when I hit击中 send发送,
36
94075
2709
01:55
up to 60,000 people will receive接收 that message信息 in a matter of seconds.
37
96784
4266
01:59
Now, the fundamental基本的 idea理念 is that Twitter推特
38
101050
3372
Twitter
02:03
lets让我们 people share分享 moments瞬间 of their lives生活
39
104422
2439
02:05

Twitter推特 was originally本来 designed设计 as a broadcast广播 medium:

Twitter
