ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Roz Savage - Ocean rower
Roz Savage gave up her life as a management consultant to row across the Atlantic in 2005. Her mission now is to row across the Pacific, from the West Coast to Australia, raising awareness along the way of plastic pollution, climate change and eco-heroism.

Why you should listen

A latecomer to the life of adventure, Roz Savage worked as a management consultant for 11 years before setting out in a new life direction -- in a rowboat across the Atlantic Ocean. She completed her solo row across the Atlantic in 2005 and is now on a mission be the first woman to row solo across the Pacific, from the West Coast of the US to Australia. She began the pursuit in 2008, rowing from California to Hawaii, and rowed from Hawaii to Kiribati in 2009. In April 2010 she began the third and final stage of her Pacific row, from Kiribati to Australia.

When not on the open seas, Roz is a passionate environmental campaigner, focused on sustainability and ending plastic pollution. She's working on the new site EcoHeroes.me, where everyday acts of environmental heroism (as simple as refusing a plastic carrier bag) can be tracked and celebrated.

02:44
To try and answer回答 that question of,
58

02:46
"What am I supposed應該 to be doing with my life?"
59
151000
2000
02:48
I satSAT down one day

02:50
and wrote two versions版本 of my own擁有 obituary訃告,

3000

but it wasn't where I wanted to be by the end結束 of my life.
65

03:04
I wanted to live生活 a life that I could be proud驕傲 of.
66
169000
3000
03:07
And I remember記得 looking at these two versions版本 of my obituary訃告
67
172000
3000
03:10
and thinking思維, "Oh boy男孩,

73
185000
2000
03:22
I made製作 a few少數 changes變化,
74
187000
2000
03:24
let go of some loose疏鬆 trappings服飾 of my old life,
75
189000
2000
03:26
and through通過 a bit of a leap飛躍 of logic邏輯,
76
191000
2000
03:28
decided決定 to row across橫過 the Atlantic大西洋 Ocean海洋.
77
193000

03:42
Sure, I had wanted to get outside of my comfort安慰 zone,

03:45
but what I'd sort分類 of failed失敗 to notice注意 was that
84
210000
2000
03:47
getting得到 out of your comfort安慰 zone is, by definition定義,

03:53
And my timing定時 was not great either:
87
218000
2000
03:55
2005, when I did the Atlantic

03:57
was the year of Hurricane颶風 Katrina卡特里娜.

03:59
There were more tropical熱帶 storms風暴 in the North Atlantic大西洋

than ever before, since以來 records記錄 began開始.
91
227000
3000
04:05
And pretty漂亮 early on,
92
230000
2000
04:07
those storms風暴 started開始 making製造 their presence存在 known已知.
93
232000
3000
04:11
All four of my oars broke打破
94
236000
2000
04:13
before I reached到達 halfway across橫過.
95
238000
2000
04:15
Oars are not supposed應該 to look like this.
96
240000
3000
04:18
But what can you do? You're in the middle中間 of the ocean海洋.
97
243000
2000
04:20
Oars are your only means手段 of propulsion動力.
98
245000
2000
04:22
So I just had to look around the boat
99
247000
2000
04:24
and figure數字 out what I was going to use
100
249000
2000
04:26
to fix固定 up these oars so that I could carry攜帶 on.
101
251000
2000
04:28
So I found發現 a boat hook and my trusty可靠 duct tape膠帶
102
253000
3000
04:31
and splintered分裂 the boat hook

256000
2000
04:33
to the oars to reinforce加強 it.
104
258000
3000
04:36
Then, when that gave out,
105
261000
2000
04:38
I sawed啥樣 the wheel axles車軸 off my spare備用 rowing划船 seat座位
106
263000
3000
04:41
and used those.
107
266000
2000
04:43
And then when those gave out, I cannibalized拆解 one of the broken破碎 oars.
108
268000
3000
04:46
I'd never been very good at fixing定影 stuff東東
109
271000
2000
04:48
when I was living活的 my old life,
110
273000
2000
04:50
but it's amazing驚人 how resourceful足智多謀 you can become成為
111
275000
3000
04:53
when you're in the middle中間 of the ocean海洋
112
278000
2000
04:55
and there's only one way to get to the other side.
113
280000
2000
04:57
And the oars kind of became成為 a symbol符號

04:59
of just in how many許多 ways方法

120
297000
3000
05:15
realizing實現 that, if I carried攜帶的 on moving移動 at two miles英里 an hour小時,
121
300000
3000
05:18
3,000 miles英里 was going to
122
303000
2000
05:20
take me a very, very long time.
123
305000
2000
05:22
There were so many許多 times
124
307000

when I thought I'd hit擊中 that limit限制,
125
309000
2000
05:26
but had no choice選擇 but to just carry攜帶 on
126

05:29
and try and figure數字 out how I was going to get to the other side

11:58
And you'll你會 notice注意 something about Tarawa塔拉瓦;
290
703000
3000
12:01
it is very low-lying.
291
706000
2000
12:03
It's that little green綠色 sliver裂片 on the horizon地平線,
292

12:06
which哪一個 makes品牌 them very nervous緊張

12:10
This is big trouble麻煩 for these guys.
295
715000
2000
12:12
They've他們已經 got no points of land土地 more than about six feet above以上 sea level水平.
296
717000
3000
12:15
And also, as an increase增加 in extreme極端
297

12:19
they're expecting期待 more waves波浪

301

12:27
I had a meeting會議 with the president主席 there,
302
732000
2000
12:29
who told me about his

12:33
He expects預計 that within the next下一個 50 years年份,

12:37
will have to relocate搬遷 to

12:39
New Zealand新西蘭 or Australia澳大利亞.
308
744000
2000
12:41
And that made製作 me think about how would I feel
309
746000
2000
12:43
if Britain英國 was going to disappear消失 under the waves波浪;
310
748000
3000

12:52
if all those places地方 were just going to disappear消失 forever永遠.
314
757000
2000
12:56
that would make me feel.
316
761000
2000
13:00
Very shortly不久, I'll be setting設置 out to try and get to Australia澳大利亞,
317
765000
3000
13:03
and if I'm successful成功, I'll be the first woman女人 ever to row solo獨奏
318
768000
3000
13:06
all the way across橫過 the Pacific和平的.
319
771000
2000
13:08
And I try to use this to bring帶來 awareness意識 to these environmental環境的 issues問題,
320
773000
3000
13:11
to bring帶來 a human人的 face面對 to the ocean海洋.
321
776000
3000
13:14
If the Atlantic大西洋 was about my inner journey旅程,
322
779000
3000
13:17
discovering發現 my own擁有 capabilities功能,
323

2000
13:19
maybe the Pacific和平的 has been about my outer journey旅程,
324
784000
3000
13:22
figuring盤算 out how I can use
325
787000
2000
13:24
my interesting有趣 career事業 choice選擇
326
789000
2000
13:26
to be of service服務 to the world世界,
327
791000
3000
13:29
and to take some of those things that I've learned學到了 out there
328
794000
3000
13:32
and apply應用 them to the situation情況
329
797000
2000
13:34
that humankind人類 now finds認定 itself本身 in.
330
799000
3000
13:37
I think there are probably大概 three key points here.
331
802000
3000
13:40
The first one is about
332
805000
2000
13:42
the stories故事 that we tell ourselves我們自己.
333
807000
2000
13:44
For so long, I told myself
334
809000
2000
13:46
that I couldn't不能 have an adventure冒險
335
811000
2000
13:48
because I wasn't six foot腳丫子 tall
336
813000
2000
13:50
and athletic競技 and bearded大鬍子.
337
815000
3000
13:53
And then that story故事 changed.
338
818000
3000
13:56
I found發現 out that people had rowed across橫過 oceans海洋.
339
821000
3000
13:59
I even met會見 one of them and she was just about my size尺寸.
340
824000
3000
14:02
So even though雖然 I didn't grow增長 any taller,
341
827000
2000
14:04
I didn't sprout發芽 a beard鬍子,
342
829000
2000
14:06
something had changed: My interior室內 dialogue對話 had changed.
343
831000
3000
14:09
At the moment時刻, the story故事 that we collectively tell ourselves我們自己
344
834000
3000
14:12
is that we need all this stuff東東,
345
837000
2000
14:14
that we need oil.
346
839000
2000
14:16
But what about if we just change更改 that story故事?
347
841000
3000
14:19
We do have alternatives
14:21
and we have the power功率 of free自由 will
349
846000
2000
14:23
to choose選擇 those alternatives備擇方案, those sustainable可持續發展 ones那些,
350
848000
3000
14:26
to create創建 a greener更環保 future未來.
351
851000
2000
14:30
The second第二 point is about
352
855000
2000
14:32
the accumulation積累 of tiny actions行動.
353
857000
2000
14:35
We might威力 think that anything that we do as an individual個人
354
860000
3000
14:38
is just a drop下降 in the ocean海洋, that it can't really make a difference區別.
355
863000
3000
14:41
But it does. Generally通常, we haven't沒有
356
866000
2000
14:43
got ourselves我們自己 into this mess食堂 through通過 big disasters災害.
357
868000
3000
14:46
Yes, there have been the Exxon埃克森 ValdezesValdezes
358
871000
2000
14:48
and the Chernobyls切爾諾貝利,
359
873000
2000
14:50
but mostly大多 it's been an accumulation積累
360
875000
2000
14:52
of bad decisions決定
361
877000
2000
14:54
by billions數十億 of individuals個人,
362
879000
2000
14:56
day after day and year after year.
363
881000
3000
14:59
And, by the same相同 token代幣, we can turn that tide浪潮.
364
884000
2000
15:01
We can start開始 making製造 better,
365
886000
2000
15:06
And when we do that, we're not just one person.
367
891000
2000
15:08
Anything that we do spreads利差 ripples漣漪.
368
893000
3000
15:11
Other people will see if you're in the supermarket超級市場 line
369
896000
2000
15:13
and you pull out your
370
898000
2000
15:17
Maybe if we all start開始 doing this,
372
902000
2000
15:19
we can make it socially社交上 unacceptable不可接受
373
904000
2000
15:21
to say yes to plastic塑料 in the checkout查看 line.
374
906000
3000
15:24
That's just one example.
375
909000
2000
15:26
This is a world-wide全世界 community社區.
376
911000
2000
15:29
The other point:
377
914000
2000
15:31
It's about taking服用 responsibility責任.
378
916000
2000
15:33
For so much of my life,
379
918000
2000
15:35
I wanted something else其他 to make me happy快樂.
380
920000
3000
15:38
I thought if I had the right house or the right car汽車
381
923000
2000
15:40
or the right man in my life,
382
925000
2000
15:42
then I could be happy快樂.
383
927000
2000
15:44
But when I wrote that obituary訃告 exercise行使,
384
929000
3000
15:47
I actually其實 grew成長 up a little bit in that moment時刻
385
932000
3000
15:50
and realized實現 that I needed需要 to create創建 my own擁有 future未來.
386
935000
3000
15:53
I couldn't不能 just wait passively被動
387
938000
2000
15:55
for happiness幸福 to come and find me.
388
940000
3000
15:58
And I suppose假設 I'm a selfish自私 environmentalist環保人士.
389
943000
2000
16:00
I plan計劃 on being存在 around for a long time,
390
945000
2000
16:02
and when I'm 90 years年份 old,
391
947000
2000
16:04
I want to be happy快樂 and healthy健康.
392
949000
2000
16:06
And it's very difficult to be happy快樂
393
951000
2000
16:08
on a planet行星 that's racked折磨
394
953000
2000
16:10
with famine飢荒 and drought乾旱.
395
955000
3000
16:13
It's very difficult to be healthy健康 on a planet行星
396
958000
2000

16:21
So, shortly不久, I'm going to be
399
966000
2000
16:23
launching發射 a new initiative倡議
400
968000

16:28
And the idea理念 here is that
402
973000
2000
16:30
all our Eco-Heroes生態英雄 will log日誌 at least最小 one green綠色 deed契據 every一切 day.
403
975000
3000
16:33
It's meant意味著 to be a bit of a game遊戲.
404
978000
2000
16:35
We're going to make an iPhone蘋果手機 app應用 out of it.
405
980000
2000
16:37
We just want to try and create創建 that awareness意識
406
982000
2000
16:39
because, sure, changing改變 a light bulb燈泡 isn't going to change更改 the world世界,
407
984000
3000
16:42
but that attitude態度,
408

16:44
