ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Lee Cronin - Chemist
A professor of chemistry, nanoscience and chemical complexity, Lee Cronin and his research group investigate how chemistry can revolutionize modern technology and even create life.

Why you should listen

Lee Cronin's lab at the University of Glasgow does cutting-edge research into how complex chemical systems, created from non-biological building blocks, can have real-world applications with wide impact. At TEDGlobal 2012, Cronin shared some of the lab's latest work: creating a 3D printer for molecules. This device -- which has been prototyped -- can download plans for molecules and print them, in the same way that a 3D printer creates objects. In the future, Cronin says this technology could potentially be used to print medicine -- cheaply and wherever it is needed. As Cronin says: "What Apple did for music, I'd like to do for the discovery and distribution of prescription drugs."

At TEDGlobal 2011, Cronin shared his lab's bold plan to create life. At the moment, bacteria is the minimum unit of life -- the smallest chemical unit that can undergo evolution. But in Cronin's emerging field, he's thinking about forms of life that won't be biological. To explore this, and to try to understand how life itself originated from chemicals, Cronin and others are attempting to create truly artificial life from completely non-biological chemistries that mimic the behavior of natural cells. They call these chemical cells, or Chells.

Cronin's research interests also encompass self-assembly and self-growing structures -- the better to assemble life at nanoscale. At the University of Glasgow, this work on crystal structures is producing a raft of papers from his research group. He says: "Basically one of my longstanding research goals is to understand how life emerged on planet Earth and re-create the process."

one of the things I wanted to askkérdez my researchkutatás groupcsoport a couplepárosít of yearsévek agoezelőtt is,
5

3467
00:31
could we make a really coolmenő universalegyetemes chemistrykémia setkészlet?
6
15245

Lényegében: tudnánk-e alkalmazást írni a vegyi anyagok előállításához?
00:40
Now what would this mean, and how would we do it?
8
24429
3183
Mit is jelentene ez, és hogyan csinálnánk?
00:43
Well to startRajt to do this,
9
27612
1971
Nos, kezdetnek
00:45
we tookvett a 3D printernyomtató
10
29583
1732
vettünk egy 3D nyomtatót
00:47
and we startedindult to printnyomtatás our beakersfőzőpoharak and our testteszt tubescsövek on one sideoldal
11
31315
4302
00:51
and then printnyomtatás the moleculemolekula at the sameazonos time on the other sideoldal
12

14
42836
4434
01:03
we maylehet startRajt to accesshozzáférés this universalegyetemes toolkiteszközkészlet of chemistrykémia.
15
47270
5167
Mit jelenthet ez?
01:08
Now what could this mean?
16
52437
1548
01:09
Well if we can embedbeágyaz biologicalbiológiai and chemicalkémiai networkshálózatok like a searchKeresés enginemotor,
17
53985
5268
01:15
so if you have a cellsejt that's illbeteg that you need to curegyógymód

01:18

vagy baktérium amit meg akarunk ölni,
01:20
if you have this embeddedbeágyazott in your deviceeszköz
20
64121
2331
ha rendelkezünk ezzel a programmal az eszközünkön,
01:22
at the sameazonos time, and you do the chemistrykémia,
21
66452
2449
ugyanakkor tanulmányozzuk a kémiát,
01:24
you maylehet be ableképes to make drugsgyógyszerek in a newúj way.
22
68901
3601
új módon készíthetünk gyógyszereket.
01:28
So how are we doing this in the lablabor?
23
72502
2400
Szóval hogyan csináljuk ezt a laborban?
01:30
Well it requiresigényel softwareszoftver, it requiresigényel hardwarehardver
24
74902
3099
Szükség van egy szoftverre, egy hardverre
01:33
and it requiresigényel chemicalkémiai inksfestékek.
25
78001
2366
és vegyi tintákra.
01:36
And so the really coolmenő bitbit is,
26
80367
1453
És az igazán klassz rész
01:37
the ideaötlet is that we want to have a universalegyetemes setkészlet of inksfestékek
27
81820
3047
01:40
that we put out with the printernyomtató,
28
84867
2269
amit egy nyomatóval együtt kiadunk,
01:43
and you downloadLetöltés the blueprintBlueprint, the organicorganikus chemistrykémia for that moleculemolekula
29
87136
4282
01:47
and you make it in the deviceeszköz.
30
91418
3000
elkészíthetjük azt az eszközünk segítségével.
01:50
And so you can make your moleculemolekula in the printernyomtató usinghasználva this softwareszoftver.
31
94418
5567
Így ennek a szoftvernek a használatával elkészíthetjük a molekulánkat a nyomtatóban.
01:55
So what could this mean?
32
99985
2199
Nos mit jelenthet ez?
01:58
Well, ultimatelyvégül, it could mean that you could printnyomtatás your ownsaját medicinegyógyszer.
33
102184
4947
02:03
And this is what we're doing in the lablabor at the momentpillanat.
34
107131

02:05
But to take babybaba stepslépések to get there,
35
109100

De hogy megtegyük odáig a bébi lépéseket,
02:06
first of all we want to look at drugdrog designtervezés and productionTermelés,
36
111002
2833
02:09
or drugdrog discoveryfelfedezés and manufacturinggyártás.
37
113835
2650
vagyis a gyógyszer felfedezést és -gyártást.
02:12
Because if we can manufacturegyártás it after we'vevoltunk discoveredfelfedezett it,
38
116485
2999
02:15
we could deploytelepítése it anywherebárhol.
39
119484

mindenhová telepíthetjük.
02:17
You don't need to go to the chemistvegyész anymoretöbbé.
40
121618
2116
Nem kell többé gyógyszertárba járnunk.
02:19
We can printnyomtatás drugsgyógyszerek at pointpont of need.
41
123734
2368
02:22
We can downloadLetöltés newúj diagnosticsdiagnosztika.

Letölthetünk új diagnosztikákat.
02:24
Say a newúj superszuper bugbogár has emergedalakult.
43

02:26
You put it in your searchKeresés enginemotor,
44

1617
Mondjuk megjelent egy új szuper-vírus. Beírjuk a keresőmotorba,
02:28
and you createteremt the drugdrog to treatcsemege the threatfenyegetés.
45
132385
3133
és megalkotjuk a gyógyszert, ami kezeli a kórt.
02:31
So this allowslehetővé tesz you on-the-flyon-the-fly molecularmolekuláris assemblygyülekezés.
46
135518

02:35
