ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Aicha el-Wafi + Phyllis Rodriguez - 9/11 mothers
Aicha el-Wafi and Phyllis Rodriguez met around a shared tragedy -- and their friendship has become a powerful symbol for forgiveness and dialogue.

Why you should listen

Phyllis Rodriguez is an artist, a teacher and a social justice activist. On September 11, 2001, her son Greg died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Rodriguez and her husband wrote an open letter, "Not in Our Son's Name," calling on President Bush to oppose a military response in Afghanistan.

Aicha el-Wafi is an activist with the French feminist group Ni Putes Ni Soumise, working with Muslim women. Her son, Zacarias Moussaoui, was tried in relation to the attacks on US soil, and faced the possibility of execution if convicted.

In November 2002, Phyllis Rodriguez and several other relatives of victims of the attacks were invited to meet Aicha el-Wafi. Rodriguez and el-Wafi have since appeared together throughout Europe and the US, telling their story of reconciliation and forgiveness.

Aicha el-Wafi + Phyllis Rodriguez: The mothers who found forgiveness, friendship

03:34
I sufferedsubito a lot as a mothermadre.
62
199000
3000
Come madre ho sofferto molto.
03:41
I was marriedsposato when I was 14.
63
206000
3000
Mi sono sposata a 14 anni.
03:46
I lostperduto a childbambino when I was 15,
64

3000
Persi un bambino a 15 anni,
03:51
a secondsecondo childbambino when I was 16.
65
216000
3000
e un secondo quando ne avevo 16.
03:57
So the storystoria with ZacariasZacarias was too much really.
66
222000
4000
04:03
And I still suffersoffrire,
67
228000
4000
E continuo a soffrire,
04:07
because my sonfiglio
68
232000
2000
04:09
is like he's buriedsepolto alivevivo.
69
234000
3000
fosse stato sepolto vivo.
04:14
I know she really criedpianto for her sonfiglio.
70
239000
5000
So quanto ha pianto per suo figlio.
04:19
But she knowsconosce where he is.
71
244000
3000
Ma almeno sa dove si trova.
04:28
My sonfiglio, I don't know where he is.
72
253000
2000
Io non so dove sia il mio.
04:30
I don't know if he's alivevivo. I don't know if he's torturedtorturati.
73
255000
2000
Non so se sia vivo. Se sia stato torturato.
04:32
I don't know what happenedè accaduto to him.
74
257000
2000
Non so cosa ne è stato di lui.
04:38
So that's why I decideddeciso to tell my storystoria,
75
263000
2000
04:40
so that my sufferingsofferenza is something positivepositivo for other womendonne.
76
265000
3000
04:48
For all the womendonne, all the mothersmadri that give life,
77
273000
4000
04:55
you can give back,
78
280000
2000
potete anche ridare la vita a qualcuno,
04:57
you can changemodificare.
79
282000
2000
fare la differenza.
04:59
It's up to us womendonne,
80
284000
3000
Questa decisione sta a noi,
05:02
because we are womendonne,
81
287000
3000
perché siamo donne,
05:05
because we love our childrenbambini.
82
290000
2000
e perché amiamo i nostri figli.
05:13
We mustdovere be hand-in-handmano nella mano
83
298000
2000
Dobbiamo camminare mano nella mano,
05:15
and do something togetherinsieme.
84
300000
2000
e fare qualcosa insieme.
05:19
It's not againstcontro womendonne,
85
304000
2000
Non è qualcosa contro le donne,
05:21
it's for us, for us womendonne,
86
306000
2000
ma qualcosa per noi, per noi donne,
05:23
for our childrenbambini.
87
308000
2000
e per i nostri figli.
05:34
I talk againstcontro violenceviolenza, againstcontro terrorismterrorismo.
88
319000
3000
05:37
I go to schoolsscuole
89
322000
2000
Vado nelle scuole
05:39
to talk to younggiovane, MuslimMusulmano girlsragazze
90
324000
3000
a parlare alle giovani, alle ragazze musulmane,
05:42
so they don't acceptaccettare to be marriedsposato againstcontro theirloro will very younggiovane.
91
327000
4000
05:58
So if I can savesalvare one of the younggiovane girlsragazze,
92
343000
5000
06:03
and avoidevitare that they get marriedsposato and suffersoffrire as much as I did,
93
348000
3000
06:06
well this is something good.
94
351000
2000
beh, allora questa è una cosa buona.
06:10
This is why I'm here in frontdavanti of you.
