ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Raul Midon - Guitarist
Guitarist and singer Raul Midon blends flamenco, jazz and R&B to create a category-defying sound. His life story is as inspiring as his musical vision.

Why you should listen

Raul Midon is into beating the odds, shattering stereotypes, and making category-defying music. "I was told as a child, 'You're blind; you can't do this,'" Midon told an interviewer in 2005. "I was told when I moved to New York, 'You can't do that, you're not going to make it.'" At 40, however, Midon has clearly made it.

After singing backup vocals for stars like Shakira, Julio Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera, Midon released his major-label solo debut, State of Mind, with help from guest artist Jason Mraz. Midon's innovative songwriting incorporates his lyrics, guitar handiwork (jazz, classical, flamenco, R&B) and "vocal trumpet" improvisation. Though he draws comparisons to Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway and Richie Havens, Midon is the rare original in an industry of few.

His latest album is A World Within a World.

about the meaning of technology,
10

00:56
I started thinking about -- when I was in college,
12
44000
3000
Eu comecei a pensar na época em que estava na faculdade,
00:59
especially as a blind person,
13
47000
3000
principalmente sendo cego,
01:02
doing a research paper was a major undertaking.
14
50000
4000
fazer um trabalho era extremamente difícil
01:06
You had to go to the library,
15
54000
2000
Você tinha que ir à biblioteca,
01:08
see if you could get them to find the books for you,
16
56000
3000
ver se alguém encontrava os livros para você,
01:11
you know, footnotes and all that.
17
59000
2000
sabe, as notas de rodapé e tudo mais.
01:13
Now you can just go on Google. Just look it up.
18
61000
3000
Agora você pode ir no Google. Só procurar.
01:16
I wish I had that when I was in college.
19
64000
3000

01:19
Anyway, this is a song about:
20
67000
3000
De qualquer forma, essa música é sobre --
01:22
we have all this, but what are we going to do with it?
21
70000
4000
nós temos isso tudo, mas o que faremos com isso?
01:26
It's called "All the Answers."
22

3000
♫ Yeah, yeah ♫
05:44
♫ I got all the answers. ♫
90
332000
9000
♫ Tenho todas as respostas ♫
05:53
(Applause)
91
341000
10000
(Aplausos)
06:03
Thank you.
92
351000
3000
Obrigado.
06:06
Whew! It's a miracle I didn't make any mistakes on that song.
93
354000
5000
Nossa! É um milagre não ter cometido nenhum erro nessa música.
06:11
That's the first time I've ever played it.
94
359000
3000
Essa foi a primeira vez que toquei.
06:14
(Applause)
95
362000
3000
(Aplausos)
06:20
It's a "feel the fear and do it anyway" kind of thing.
96
368000
4000
O tipo de coisa que "dá medo mas a gente faz assim mesmo"
06:26
This next song is a song
97
374000
3000
Essa próxima música
06:29
that started out as a dream -- a childhood dream.
98
377000
3000
começou com como um sonho - um sonho de infância
06:32
It was one of the titles
99
380000
3000
Foi um dos nomes
06:35
that I was sort of thinking about calling my record,
100
383000
4000
que eu pensei em dar pro meu disco
06:39
except there's a couple of problems.
101
387000
2000
porém haviam alguns problemas.
06:41
One thing is, it's unpronounceable.
102
389000
3000
Um, é impronunciável.
06:44
And it's a made-up word.
103
392000
2000
E é uma palavra inventada.
06:46
It's called "Tembererana."
104
394000
2000
Se chama "Tembererana."
06:48
And the song is based on
105
396000
2000
A música é baseada no que
06:50
what I think was my first
106
398000
3000
eu acho ser minha primeira
06:53
childhood attempts
107
401000
3000
tentativa de infância
06:56
to think about invisible forces.
108
404000
3000
de pensar em forças invisíveis.
06:59
So "tembererana" was these dreams,
109
407000
4000
Então "Tembererana" é um desses sonhos...
07:03
in which I would be running away
110
411000
3000
nos quais eu estou fugindo
07:06
from bad feelings -- is the only way I can put it.
111
414000
3000
de sentimento ruins -- É a única forma de explicá-la.
07:09
So this is called "Tembererana."
112
417000
4000
Se chama "Tembererana."
07:13
It's based on an Argentinian rhythm
113
421000
3000
É baseado em um ritmo argentino
07:16
called "carnivalito."
114
424000
2000
chamado carnavalito.
07:22
♫ A dream within a dream, ♫
