ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Brian Dettmer -
Artist Brian Dettmer digs into a good book (literally, with a knife) to create beautifully intricate forms that reflect how we see old information in a modern world.

Why you should listen
New York–based artist Brian Dettmer carves intricate sculptures from outdated materials like encyclopedias, textbooks, maps and cassette tapes. To create his works Dettmer seals the object with varnish, then swiftly and deftly moves through it with an X-Acto knife until he comes out the other side, cutting away material to form something new. His beautiful carvings reflect how, in a digital information landscape, even the oldest forms of knowledge can be repurposed.

Eu sou artista e corto livros.
00:12
I'm an artist and I cut books.
0
601
2009
Aqui, uma de minhas primeiras
obras com livros.
00:14
This is one of my first book works.
1
2610
1706
00:16
It's called "Alternate
Route to Knowledge."
2
4316
2024
Chama-se "Rota Alternativa
para o Conhecimento".
00:18
I wanted to create a stack of books so
that somebody could come into the gallery
3
6340
3792
Eu queria criar uma pilha de livros
para que as pessoas chegassem à galeria
00:22
and think they're just looking
at a regular stack of books,
4
10132
2820
e achassem que estavam vendo
uma pilha de livros normais,
00:24
but then as they got closer they would
see this rough hole carved into it,
5
12952
3489
mas quando chegassem mais perto,
veriam esse buraco entalhado,
e imaginariam o que acontece,
imaginariam por quê,
00:28
and wonder what was happening,
wonder why,
6
16441
1976
00:30
and think about the material of the book.
7
18417
2036
e pensariam sobre o material do livro.
00:32
So I'm interested in the texture,
8
20453
2090
E eu me interesso pela textura,
00:34
but I'm more interested in the text
and the images that we find within books.
9
22543
4120
mas me interesso mais pelo texto
e pelas imagens dentro dos livros.
00:39
In most of my work, what I do is I seal
the edges of a book with a thick varnish
10
27623
3901
Na maioria das minhas obras, eu selo
as abas de um livro com um verniz espesso
00:43
so it's creating sort of a skin
on the outside of the book
11
31524
2810
para criar um tipo de pele
na parte de fora do livro
00:46
so it becomes a solid material,
but then the pages inside are still loose,
12
34334
3868
e torna-se um material sólido,
mas as páginas internas continuam soltas,
00:50
and then I carve
into the surface of the book,
13
38202
2150
e eu esculpo na superfície do livro,
00:52
and I'm not moving or adding anything.
14
40352
2531
e não movo ou adiciono nada.
00:54
I'm just carving around
whatever I find interesting.
15
42883
2879
Eu só esculpo em torno
do que eu acho interessante.
00:57
So everything you see
within the finished piece
16
45762
2461
Tudo o que vocês veem na obra final
01:00
is exactly where it was
in the book before I began.
17
48223
2773
está exatamente onde estava
no livro antes de eu começar.
01:04
I think of my work as sort of
a remix, in a way,
18
52666
2348
Eu vejo meu trabalho
como um tipo de remix,
01:07
because I'm working with
somebody else's material
19
55014
2331
porque eu trabalho
com o material de outra pessoa
01:09
in the same way that a D.J. might be
working with somebody else's music.
20
57345
3628
do mesmo jeito que um DJ pode trabalhar
com a música de outra pessoa.
01:12
This was a book of Raphael paintings,
the Renaissance artist,
21
60973
3945
Este era um livro de pinturas do Rafael,
o artista da Renascença,
01:16
and by taking his work
and remixing it, carving into it,
22
64918
4435
e ao pegar seu trabalho
e remixá-lo, esculpi-lo,
01:21
I'm sort of making it into something
that's more new and more contemporary.
23
69353
3692
eu o transformo em algo mais novo
e mais contemporâneo.
01:25
I'm thinking also about breaking out
of the box of the traditional book
24
73915
3866
Também penso em sair da caixa
dos livros tradicionais
01:29
and pushing that linear format,
25
77781
2136
e forçar esse formato linear,
01:31
and try to push the structure
of the book itself
26
79917
3983
e tentar forçar
a própria estrutura do livro.
01:35
so that the book can become
fully sculptural.
27
83900
2523
Assim, o livro torna-se
totalmente escultural.
01:41
I'm using clamps and ropes
and all sorts of materials, weights,
28
89303
3765
Eu uso braçadeiras, cordas
e todo tipo de material, pesos,
01:45
in order to hold things
in place before I varnish
29
93068
2972
para manter as coisas no lugar
antes de passar o verniz
01:48
so that I can push the form
before I begin,
30
96040
2560
para poder forçar o formato
antes de começar,
01:50
so that something like this
can become a piece like this,
31
98600
4642
para que algo assim
possa se tornar algo assim,
01:55
which is just made
from a single dictionary.
32
103242
2888
que é feito somente
de um único dicionário.
01:58
Or something like this
can become a piece like this.
33
106130
6238
Ou algo assim possa se tornar algo assim.
02:06
Or something like this,
34
114768
1476
Ou algo assim,
02:08
which who knows what that's going to be
or why that's in my studio,
35
116244
4011
quem sabe o que isso vai se tornar
ou por que está no meu ateliê,
02:12
will become a piece like this.
36
120255
4019
possa se tornar algo assim.
02:16
So I think one of the reasons
people are disturbed by destroying books,
37
124997
3688
Eu acho que uma das razões de as pessoas
se incomodarem com destruir livros,
não quererem rasgar livros
02:20
people don't want to rip books
38
128685
1543
02:22
and nobody really wants
to throw away a book,
39
130228
2131
e ninguém querer jogar um livro fora,
02:24
is that we think about books
as living things,
40
132359
2193
é que vemos os livros como coisas vivas,
02:26
we think about them as a body,
41
134552
1671
pensamos neles como um corpo,
02:28
and they're created
to relate to our body, as far as scale,
42
136223
3090
e são criados para corresponderem
ao nosso corpo, em escala,
02:31
but they also have the potential
to continue to grow
43
139313
2428
mas também têm o potencial
de continuar crescendo
02:33
and to continue to become new things.
44
141741
1990
e continuar sendo novas coisas.
02:35
So books really are alive.
45
143731
2727
E livros são realmente vivos.
02:38
So I think of the book as a body,
46
146458
2530
Eu vejo o livro como um corpo,
02:40
and I think of the book as a technology.
47
148988
2704
e eu vejo o livro como uma tecnologia.
02:43
I think of the book as a tool.
48
151692
2389
Eu vejo o livro como uma ferramenta.
02:48
And I also think of the book as a machine.
49
156111
4324
E também o vejo como uma máquina.
02:52
I also think of the book as a landscape.
50
160435
2374
Também o vejo como uma paisagem.
02:54
This is a full set of encyclopedias
that's been connected and sanded together,
51
162809
4272
Este é um conjunto completo
de enciclopédias conectadas e lixadas,
02:59
and as I carve through it,
52
167081
2253
e à medida que eu esculpo,
03:01
I'm deciding what I want to choose.
53
169334
1941
eu decido o que quero escolher.
03:03
So with encyclopedias,
I could have chosen anything,
54
171275
2588
Com enciclopédias, eu poderia
ter escolhido qualquer coisa,
03:05
but I specifically chose
images of landscapes.
55
173863
2667
mas especificamente escolhi
imagens de paisagens.
03:10
And with the material itself,
I'm using sandpaper
56
178030
2936
E com o próprio material,
eu usei uma lixa
03:12
and sanding the edges
so not only the images suggest landscape,
57
180966
3692
e lixei as bordas para que não somente
as imagens sugiram paisagens,
03:16
but the material itself
suggests a landscape as well.
58
184658
2708
mas o próprio material
sugira uma paisagem também.
03:21
So one of the things I do
is when I'm carving through the book,
59
189456
3433
Quando estou esculpindo o livro,
03:24
I'm thinking about images,
but I'm also thinking about text,
60
192889
3681
eu penso nas imagens,
mas também penso no texto,
03:28
and I think about them
in a very similar way,
61
196570
2205
e eu penso neles
de maneira bastante similar,
03:30
because what's interesting
is that when we're reading text,
62
198775
2872
porque o interessante
é que quando lemos um texto,
03:33
when we're reading a book,
63
201647
1499
quando lemos um livro,
03:35
it puts images in our head,
64
203146
1469
criamos imagens em nossa cabeça,
03:36
so we're sort of filling that piece.
65
204615
2023
e de certo modo preenchemos esse espaço.
03:38
We're sort of creating images
when we're reading text,
66
206638
3401
Criamos imagens quando lemos um texto.
03:42
and when we're looking at an image,
we actually use language
67
210039
2877
E quando vemos uma imagem,
nós usamos linguagem
03:44
in order to understand
what we're looking at.
68
212916
2716
para entender o que estamos observando.
03:47
So there's sort of
a yin-yang that happens,
69
215632
2229
Então há um tipo de yin-yang,
03:49
sort of a flip flop.
70
217861
1277
um tipo de troca.
03:51
So I'm creating a piece
that the viewer is completing themselves.
71
219138
5539
Eu crio uma obra
que o próprio espectador completa.
03:57
And I think of my work
as almost an archaeology.
72
225477
3483
E vejo meu trabalho
quase como arqueologia.
04:00
I'm excavating and I'm trying
to maximize the potential
73
228960
3019
Eu escavo e tento maximizar o potencial
04:03
and discover as much as I possibly can
74
231979
2089
e descobrir o máximo possível
04:06
and exposing it within my own work.
75
234068
2641
e expô-lo dentro de meu próprio trabalho.
04:10
But at the same time,
76
238219
1677
Mas ao mesmo tempo,
04:11
I'm thinking about this idea of erasure,
77
239896
1974
eu penso nessa ideia de rasura,
04:13
and what's happening now that most
of our information is intangible,
78
241870
4481
e agora que a maior parte
da nossa informação é intangível,
04:18
and this idea of loss,
79
246351
3042
e essa ideia de perda,
04:21
and this idea that not only is the format
constantly shifting within computers,
80
249393
4318
e essa ideia de que não só o formato
muda constantemente nos computadores
04:25
but the information itself,
81
253711
2322
mas a própria informação,
04:28
now that we don't have a physical backup,
82
256033
2229
agora que não há uma cópia física,
04:30
has to be constantly updated
in order to not lose it.
83
258262
5581
tem que ser constantemente atualizada
para que não se perca.
04:35
And I have several dictionaries
in my own studio,
84
263843
2780
Eu tenho vários dicionários no meu ateliê,
04:38
and I do use a computer every day,
85
266623
2517
e eu também uso um computador diariamente.
04:41
and if I need to look up a word,
I'll go on the computer,
86
269140
2793
Se eu precisar procurar uma palavra,
uso o computador,
04:43
because I can go directly
and instantly to what I'm looking up.
87
271933
3326
porque posso ir direta
e instantaneamente ao que procuro.
04:47
I think that the book was never really
88
275259
1950
Acho que o livro nunca foi
04:49
the right format
for nonlinear information,
89
277209
2995
o formato certo
para informação não linear,
04:52
which is why we're seeing reference books
90
280204
2074
e é por isso que vemos
livros de referência
04:54
becoming the first to be
endangered or extinct.
91
282278
3875
sendo os primeiros em perigo de extinção.
05:01
So I don't think that the book
will ever really die.
92
289743
2767
Bem, eu não acho que o livro vai morrer.
05:04
People think that now that we have
digital technology,
93
292510
4296
As pessoas acham que agora
que temos tecnologia digital,
05:08
the book is going to die,
94
296806
1372
o livro vai morrer,
05:10
and we are seeing things shifting
and things evolving.
95
298178
3203
e estamos vendo
as coisas mudarem e evoluírem.
05:13
I think that the book will evolve,
96
301381
2124
Eu acho que o livro vai evoluir,
05:15
and just like people said
painting would die
97
303505
3262
e assim como disseram
que a pintura morreria
05:18
when photography and printmaking
became everyday materials,
98
306767
4400
quando a fotografia e a impressora
se tornaram cotidianos,
mas o que isso realmente
possibilitou à pintura
05:23
but what it really allowed painting to do
99
311167
1987
05:25
was it allowed painting
to quit its day job.
100
313154
2552
foi que ela largasse seu trabalho diurno.
05:27
It allowed painting to not have to have
that everyday chore of telling the story,
101
315706
6315
Permitiu que a pintura não cuidasse
mais de contar a história,
05:34
and painting became free
and was allowed to tell its own story,
102
322022
3413
e a pintura se libertou
e pôde contar sua própria história,
05:37
and that's when we saw Modernism emerge,
103
325435
2077
e foi aí que vimos
a ascensão do Modernismo,
05:39
and we saw painting
go into different branches.
104
327512
2242
e vimos a pintura abrir diferentes ramos.
E acho que é a mesma coisa
com os livros agora,
05:41
And I think that's what's
happening with books now,
105
329754
2484
05:44
now that most of our technology,
most of our information,
106
332238
2695
agora que a maior parte
de nossa tecnologia e informação,
05:46
most of our personal and cultural
records are in digital form,
107
334933
4194
a maior parte de nossos registros pessoais
e culturais estão em formato digital,
05:51
I think it's really allowing the book
to become something new.
108
339127
2952
acho que isso permite
ao livro ser algo novo.
05:54
So I think it's a very exciting time
for an artist like me,
109
342079
2790
Acho que é uma época muito animadora
para um artista como eu,
05:56
and it's very exciting to see what
will happen with the book in the future.
110
344869
3570
e é muito empolgante ver o que
vai acontecer com o livro no futuro.
Obrigado.
06:00
Thank you.
