ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alan Eustace - Stratospheric explorer
Alan Eustace leapt to Earth from the edge of the stratosphere wearing only a spacesuit, shattering skydiving records and potentially revolutionizing the commercial space industry.

Why you should listen

Two years after Felix Baumgartner jumped from a capsule in the stratosphere for Red Bull, a quiet group led by now-retired Google exec Alan Eustace beat the height record -- without a capsule. (Neither livestreamed nor promoted, the jump record was announced the next day.) In a custom 500-pound spacesuit, Eustace was strapped to a weather balloon, and rose to a height of over 135,000 feet, where he dove to Earth at speeds exceeding 821 mph -- breaking both the sound barrier and previous records for high-altitude jumps.

Leading up to this jump, Eustace and his partners in StratEx had spent years solving a key problem of stratosphere exploration: returning human beings to Earth from the edge of space using minimal life-support systems. In the process, they’ve opened the door to cheaper and safer near-space travel.

00:12
So I grew up in Orlando, Florida.
0

3176
Fui criado em Orlando, na Flórida.
00:16
I was the son of an aerospace engineer.
1
4000
3296
Meu pai era engenheiro aeroespacial.
00:19
I lived and breathed the Apollo program.
2
7320
2736
Vivi e respirei o programa Apollo.
00:22
We either saw the launches
from our backyard
3
10080
2056
Víamos os lançamentos do nosso quintal,
00:24
or we saw it by driving
in the hour over to the Cape.
4
12160
3656
ou os víamos no trajeto
de uma hora até Cabo Canaveral.
Claro, eu ficava impressionado
com tudo a respeito do espaço,
00:27
I was impressed by, obviously,
space and everything about it,
5
15840
2858
00:30
but I was most impressed
by the engineering that went into it.
6
18722
2905
mas o que mais me impressionava
era a engenharia utilizada para isso.
00:34
Behind me you see an amazing view,
7
22720
2696
Atrás de mim,
vocês têm uma visão incrível,
00:37
a picture that was taken
from the International Space Station,
8
25440
3896
uma fotografia tirada
da Estação Espacial Internacional,
00:41
and it shows a portion of our planet
9
29360
2176
e ela mostra uma parte do nosso planeta
que raramente é vista e estudada
00:43
that's rarely seen and rarely studied
10
31560
2416
00:46
and almost never explored.
11
34000
2296
e que quase nunca é explorada.
00:48
That place is called the stratosphere.
12
36320
2536
É a chamada estratosfera.
00:50
If you start on the planet
and you go up and up and up,
13
38880
3136
Se você partir do solo
e for subindo, subindo e subindo,
00:54
it gets colder and colder and colder,
14
42040
2576
fica cada vez mais frio,
00:56
until you reach the beginning
of the stratosphere,
15
44640
2376
até chegar ao início da estratosfera
e, então, algo incrível acontece.
00:59
and then an amazing thing happens.
16
47040
2616
01:01
It gets colder at a much slower rate,
and then it starts warming up,
17
49680
4016
Fica mais frio bem mais devagar
e, então, começa a esquentar,
e vai ficando cada vez mais quente,
01:05
and then it gets warmer and warmer
18
53720
1656
até o ponto em que você quase pode
sobreviver sem qualquer proteção,
01:07
until the point where you can
almost survive without any protection,
19
55400
4936
a cerca de zero grau,
01:12
about zero degrees,
20
60360
1816
01:14
and then you end up
getting colder and colder,
21
62200
3295
e aí acaba ficando cada vez mais frio,
01:17
and that's the top of the stratosphere.
22
65519
2217
chegando então ao topo da estratosfera.
01:19
It is one of the least accessible
places on our planet.
23
67760
3936
É um dos lugares menos
acessíveis em nosso planeta.
01:23
Most often, when it's visited,
24
71720
1736
Normalmente, só astronautas a visitam,
ao atravessarem-na em alta velocidade,
01:25
it's by astronauts
who are blazing up at it
25
73480
3896
01:29
at probably several times
the speed of sound,
26
77400
2856
provavelmente a diversas vezes
a velocidade do som,
01:32
and they get a few seconds on the way up,
27
80280
1976
em questão de alguns segundos na subida,
01:34
and then they get this blazing
ball of fire coming back in,
28
82280
4776
e quando reentram na atmosfera
como uma bola de fogo,
01:39
on the way back in.
29
87080
1936
no caminho de volta.
01:41
But the question I asked is, is it
possible to linger in the stratosphere?
30
89040
4296
Mas a pergunta que fiz foi:
"É possível permanecer na estratosfera?
01:45
Is it possible to experience
the stratosphere?
31
93360
2336
É possível vivenciar a estratosfera?
01:47
Is it possible to explore
the stratosphere?
32
95720
2520
É possível explorar a estratosfera?"
Estudei isso utilizando
minha ferramenta de busca preferida,
01:54
I studied this using
my favorite search engine
33
102640
2776
01:57
for quite a while, about a year,
34
105440
3016
durante um bom tempo, cerca de um ano,
02:00
and then I made a scary phone call.
35
108480
3496
e depois fiz uma ligação
telefônica assustadora.
02:04
It was a reference from a friend of mine
to call Taber MacCallum
36
112000
3696
Um amigo meu me recomendou
ligar para Taber MacCallum,
02:07
from Paragon Space
Development Corporation,
37
115720
2736
da Paragon Space Development Corporation,
02:10
and I asked him the question:
38
118480
1381
e perguntei a ele o seguinte:
"É possível criar
02:11
is it possible to build
39
119885
3360
02:16
a system to go into the stratosphere?
40
124000
2136
um sistema para entrar na estratosfera?"
02:18
And he said it was.
41
126160
1576
Ele respondeu que sim.
02:19
And after a period of about three years,
we proceeded to do just that.
42
127760
6696
Após um período de cerca de três anos,
foi exatamente o que fizemos.
02:26
And on October 24 of last year,
43
134480
2480
E, em 24 de outubro do ano passado,
usando este traje, parti do solo,
02:29
in this suit,
44
137680
1200
02:31
I started on the ground,
45
139440
1400
02:33
I went up in a balloon to 135,890 feet --
46
141720
6040
subi a 41,4 quilômetros usando um balão...
mas pra que contar?
02:40
but who's counting?
47
148360
1216
02:41
(Laughter)
48
149600
2456
(Risos)
02:44
Came back to Earth
at speeds of up to 822 miles an hour.
49
152080
4400
Voltei ao solo a uma velocidade
de até 1.322 km/h.
02:49
It was a four-minute
and 27-second descent.
50
157800
3040
Foi uma descida de 4 minutos
e 27 segundos.
02:53
And when I got to 10,000 feet,
I opened a parachute and I landed.
51
161600
4080
Quando cheguei a 3 km,
abri o paraquedas e pousei.
02:58
(Applause)
52
166120
4560
(Aplausos)
03:06
But this is really a science talk,
and it's really an engineering talk,
53
174000
4056
Mas esta é, na verdade, uma palestra
sobre ciência e sobre engenharia,
03:10
and what was amazing to me
about that experience
54
178080
2296
e, para mim, o mais incrível
nessa experiência
03:12
is that Taber said, yes, I think
we can build a stratospheric suit,
55
180400
4656
foi Taber dizer que sim, que achava
possível criar um traje estratosférico
03:17
and more than that, come down tomorrow
56
185080
2616
e, mais que isso,
que eu fosse lá no dia seguinte
03:19
and let's talk to the team
that formed the core of the group
57
187720
3136
e conversasse com a equipe
que integrava o cerne do grupo
03:22
that actually built it.
58
190880
1200
que de fato criou o traje.
03:24
And they did something
which I think is important,
59
192400
4336
Eles fizeram algo que acho importante:
03:28
which is they took
the analogy of scuba diving.
60
196760
3336
utilizaram o mergulho
de profundidade como analogia.
03:32
So in scuba diving,
61
200120
1696
No mergulho de profundidade,
você tem um sistema de sobrevivência.
03:33
you have a self-contained system.
62
201840
1816
Nele, você tem tudo de que possa precisar.
03:35
You have everything
that you could ever need.
63
203680
2336
03:38
You have a scuba tank.
64
206040
2040
Você tem tanques de oxigênio.
03:40
You have a wetsuit.
65
208480
2656
Tem roupa de mergulho.
03:43
You have visibility.
66
211160
1736
Tem lentes.
03:44
And that scuba is exactly this system,
67
212920
2736
E este sistema que vamos lançar
na estratosfera é igual ao de mergulho.
03:47
and we're going to launch it
into the stratosphere.
68
215680
2440
03:50
Three years later, this is what we have.
69
218920
2160
Três anos depois, é isto que temos.
03:54
We've got an amazing suit
that was made by ILC Dover.
70
222160
4696
Temos um traje incrível,
feito pela ILC Dover.
03:58
ILC Dover was the company
that made all of the Apollo suits
71
226880
3456
ILC Dover foi a empresa
que criou todos os trajes do Apollo
04:02
and all of the extravehicular
activity suits.
72
230360
2416
e todos os trajes
de atividades extraveiculares.
04:04
They had never sold a suit commercially,
73
232800
3256
Eles jamais haviam
comercializado um traje,
04:08
only to the government,
74
236080
1576
a não ser para o governo,
04:09
but they sold one to me,
which I am very grateful for.
75
237680
3616
mas me venderam um,
pelo que sou muito grato.
04:13
Up here we have a parachute.
This was all about safety.
76
241320
3160
Aqui em cima, temos um paraquedas.
Tudo levou em conta a segurança.
04:17
Everyone on the team knew
77
245240
4816
Todos na equipe sabiam
04:22
that I have a wife
and two small children --
78
250080
2736
que tenho esposa e duas filhas pequenas,
04:24
10 and 15 --
79
252840
2576
de 10 e de 15 anos,
04:27
and I wanted to come back safely.
80
255440
2055
e que eu queria voltar em segurança.
04:29
So there's a main parachute
and a reserve parachute,
81
257519
2430
Temos um paraquedas principal
e um reserva e, se eu não fizer nada,
04:31
and if I do nothing,
82
259973
1200
04:33
the reserve parachute is going to open
because of an automatic opening device.
83
261760
3667
o paraquedas reserva se abre,
devido a um dispositivo automático.
04:38
The suit itself
can protect me from the cold.
84
266160
2136
O próprio traje me protege do frio.
04:40
This area in the front here
has thermal protection.
85
268320
2936
Esta área frontal possui proteção térmica,
04:43
It will actually heat water
that will wrap around my body.
86
271280
3176
que aquece água que circula pelo traje.
04:46
It has two redundant oxygen tanks.
87
274480
2456
Ele possui dois tanques
bem cheios de oxigênio.
04:48
Even if I was to get
a quarter-inch hole in this suit,
88
276960
3056
Mesmo que o traje tivesse
um buraco de seis milímetros,
04:52
which is extremely unlikely,
89
280040
2576
o que é extremamente improvável,
04:54
this system would still protect me
from the low pressure of space.
90
282640
3800
esse sistema ainda me protegeria
da baixa pressão do espaço.
04:59
The main advantage of this system
is weight and complexity.
91
287320
3656
A principal vantagem desse sistema
é o peso e a complexidade.
05:03
So the system weighs about 500 pounds,
92
291000
2976
Ele pesa cerca de 227 kg
05:06
and if you compare it to the other attempt
recently to go up in the stratosphere,
93
294000
3816
e, em comparação a outra tentativa
recente de chegar à estratosfera,
foi usada uma cápsula.
05:09
they used a capsule.
94
297840
1256
05:11
And to do a capsule, there's an amazing
amount of complexity that goes into it,
95
299120
3976
Criar uma cápsula
é algo extremamente complexo
05:15
and it weighed about 3,000 pounds,
96
303120
1936
e ela pesava cerca de 1.360 kg.
05:17
and to raise 3,000 pounds
to an altitude of 135,000 feet,
97
305080
4696
Para levar 1.360 kg a 41 km de altitude,
05:21
which was my target altitude,
98
309800
2136
que era minha altitude almejada,
05:23
it would have taken a balloon
that was 45 to 50 million cubic feet.
99
311960
5160
seria preciso usar um balão
de 1.274 a 1.416 km³.
05:30
Because I only weighed
500 pounds in this system,
100
318840
3336
Sendo de 227 kg o peso
do sistema que usei,
05:34
we could do it with a balloon
that was five times smaller than that,
101
322200
3216
pudemos usar um balão
cinco vezes menor que isso,
o que nos permitiu utilizar um sistema
de lançamento extremamente mais simples
05:37
and that allowed us to use a launch system
that was dramatically simpler
102
325440
4416
05:41
than what needs to be done
for a much larger balloon.
103
329880
2640
do que o que precisa ser usado
com um balão maior.
05:45
So with that, I want to take you
to Roswell, New Mexico, on October 24.
104
333480
4656
Então, vou contar a vocês sobre Roswell,
Novo México, em 24 de outubro.
05:50
We had an amazing team
that got up in the middle of the night.
105
338160
3696
Tínhamos uma equipe incrível,
que acordou no meio da madrugada.
05:53
And here's the suit.
106
341880
2576
Aí está o traje.
05:56
Again, this is using the front loader
that you'll see in a second,
107
344480
3136
Ele está sendo levado
num trator que vocês logo verão,
05:59
and I want to play you a video
of the actual launch.
108
347640
3216
e quero mostrar a vocês um vídeo
do lançamento de fato.
06:02
Roswell's a great place
to launch balloons,
109
350880
2016
Roswell é ótima para lançamento de balões,
06:04
but it's a fantastic place
to land under a parachute,
110
352920
3176
mas é fantástica para pouso de paraquedas,
06:08
especially when you're going to land
70 miles away from the place you started.
111
356120
4400
especialmente quando o pouso
é a 113 km do lugar de onde você partiu.
06:13
That's a helium truck in the background.
112
361640
2040
Aquele é um caminhão com hélio, no fundo.
06:16
It's darkness.
113
364360
1256
Está escuro.
06:17
I've already spent about an hour
and a half pre-breathing.
114
365640
3216
Já passei cerca de uma hora e meia
treinando a respiração.
06:20
And then here you see the suit going on.
115
368880
2400
Aqui, estou vestindo o traje.
06:24
It takes about an hour to get the suit on.
116
372960
2280
Leva cerca de uma hora para vesti-lo.
06:29
Astronauts get this really nice
air-conditioned van
117
377480
3736
Os astronautas são levados numa van
bem legal, com ar-condicionado,
06:33
to go to the launch pad,
but I got a front loader.
118
381240
2576
até o local de lançamento,
mas eu fui num trator.
06:35
(Laughter)
119
383840
2176
(Risos)
06:38
You can see the top.
You can see the balloon up there.
120
386040
2536
Dá para ver o alto.
Dá para ver o balão lá em cima.
06:40
That's where the helium is.
121
388600
1520
É lá que o hélio está.
06:44
This is Dave clearing the airspace
with the FAA for 15 miles.
122
392640
3640
Esse é o Dave deixando o espaço
aéreo livre com a FAA por 24 km.
06:52
And there we go.
123
400360
1200
E lá vamos nós.
06:56
(Laughter)
124
404520
1696
(Risos)
06:58
That's me waving with my left hand.
125
406240
1696
Eu, acenando com a mão esquerda.
06:59
The reason I'm waving with my left hand
126
407960
2056
Estou acenando com a mão esquerda
07:02
is because on the right hand
is the emergency cutaway.
127
410040
2656
porque, na mão direita,
está a ejeção de segurança.
07:04
(Laughter)
128
412720
1576
(Risos)
07:06
My team forbade me
from using my right hand.
129
414320
2840
Minha equipe me proibiu
de usar minha mão direita.
07:11
So the trip up is beautiful.
It's kind of like Google Earth in reverse.
130
419280
3336
A viagem de subida é linda.
Parecida com o Google Earth retrocedendo.
07:14
(Laughter)
131
422640
2816
(Risos)
07:17
It took two hours
and seven minutes to go up,
132
425480
2096
Levei duas horas
e sete minutos para subir,
07:19
and it was the most peaceful
two hours and seven minutes.
133
427600
2736
e foram as duas horas
e sete minutos mais serenos.
07:22
I was mostly trying to relax.
134
430360
1880
Tentei basicamente relaxar.
07:25
My heart rate was very low
135
433920
2016
Minha frequência cardíaca estava bem baixa
07:27
and I was trying not to use
very much oxygen.
136
435960
2120
e eu tentei não usar muito oxigênio.
07:31
You can see how the fields
in the background
137
439840
2736
Dá para ver como os campos atrás
estão relativamente grandes a essa altura,
07:34
are relatively big at this point,
138
442600
1616
07:36
and you can see me going up and up.
139
444240
2056
e dá para me ver subindo cada vez mais.
07:38
It's interesting here,
because if you look,
140
446320
2016
Aqui é interessante, porque se repararem,
07:40
I'm right over the airport,
and I'm probably at 50,000 feet,
141
448360
3376
estou bem acima do aeroporto
e estou a 15 km de altura,
07:43
but immediately I'm about to go
into a stratospheric wind
142
451760
2696
mas logo estou prestes a entrar
num vento estratosférico
07:46
of over 120 miles an hour.
143
454480
1720
de mais de 190 km por hora.
07:51
This is my flight director telling me
that I had just gone higher
144
459440
3736
Esse é o meu diretor de voo me dizendo
que havia acabado de ir mais alto
07:55
than anybody else
had ever gone in a balloon,
145
463200
2216
do que qualquer um já havia ido
usando um balão
07:57
and I was about 4,000 feet from release.
146
465440
3680
e eu estava a cerca de 1 km
do ponto de soltura.
08:01
This is what it looks like.
147
469680
1360
Essa é a vista.
08:06
You can see the darkness of space,
the curvature of the Earth,
148
474240
2905
Dá para ver a escuridão do espaço,
a curvatura da Terra,
08:10
the fragile planet below.
149
478080
1320
o frágil planeta abaixo.
08:20
I'm practicing my emergency procedures
mentally right now.
150
488200
3200
Agora, estou praticando mentalmente
os procedimentos de emergência.
08:24
If anything goes wrong,
I want to be ready.
151
492640
2016
Se algo der errado, quero estar preparado.
08:26
And the main thing that I want to do here
152
494680
2176
E a principal coisa que quero fazer aqui
08:28
is to have a release and fall
and stay completely stable.
153
496880
6416
é me soltar, cair
e ficar totalmente estável.
08:35
(Video) Ground control. Everyone ready?
154
503320
2920
(Vídeo) Controle de solo:
Todos preparados?
08:43
Five. Four. Three. Two. One.
155
511720
5240
Cinco, quatro, três, dois, um.
08:59
Alan Eustace: There's the balloon
going by, fully inflated at this point.
156
527840
3429
Alan Eustace: Aquele é o balão passando,
completamente inflado.
09:04
And there you can see a drogue parachute,
which I'll demonstrate in just a second,
157
532678
3858
E dá para ver o paraquedas estabilizador,
que vou já vou mostrar,
porque é muito importante.
09:08
because that's really important.
158
536560
1576
Aquele é o balão passando uma segunda vez.
09:10
There's the balloon
going by a second time.
159
538160
2000
09:21
Right now, I'm about
at the speed of sound.
160
549200
2160
Agora, estou praticamente
à velocidade do som.
09:24
There's nothing for me to tell
it's the speed of sound,
161
552640
2720
Não há nada que me diga
que estou à velocidade do som
09:27
and very soon I will actually be
as fast as I ever get,
162
555880
3776
e, logo, alcançarei, na verdade,
minha velocidade máxima,
09:31
822 miles an hour.
163
559680
1640
1.322 km por hora.
09:49
(Video) Ground control: We lost the data.
164
577200
1953
(Vídeo) Controle de solo:
Perdemos os dados.
09:54
AE: So now I'm down low right now
165
582960
1616
AE: Já desci bastante agora
09:56
and you can basically see
the parachute come out right there.
166
584600
5296
e dá para ver o paraquedas sair bem ali.
10:01
At this point, I'm very happy
that there's a parachute out.
167
589920
2762
A essa altura, estou feliz
que o paraquedas tenha saído.
Achei que eu fosse o único feliz,
10:05
I thought I was the only one happy,
168
593789
1667
mas o controle da missão
também estava muito feliz.
10:07
but it turns out mission control
was really happy as well.
169
595480
3336
10:10
The really nice thing about this
is the moment I opened --
170
598840
3096
O mais legal foi o momento em que abri...
10:13
I had a close of friend of mine,
Blikkies, my parachute guy.
171
601960
3376
Eu tinha um grande amigo,
o Blikkies, o homem do paraquedas.
10:17
He flew in another airplane,
and he actually jumped out
172
605360
2936
Ele foi em outro avião, pulou
10:20
and landed right next to me.
173
608320
1976
e pousou bem ao meu lado.
10:22
He was my wingman on the descent.
174
610320
3256
Ele foi o meu apoio na descida.
10:25
This is my landing, but it's probably more
properly called a crash.
175
613600
5216
Esse é o momento do pouso;
mais apropriadamente uma queda, talvez.
10:30
(Laughter)
176
618840
4216
(Risos)
10:35
I hate to admit it, but this wasn't
even close to my worst landing.
177
623080
3456
Odeio admitir, mas foi bem pior
que meu pior pouso até então.
10:38
(Laughter)
178
626560
2856
(Risos)
10:41
(Applause)
179
629440
5320
(Aplausos)
11:00
(Video) Man: How are you doing?
180
648160
1496
(Vídeo) Homem: Como você está?
11:01
AE: Hi there!
181
649680
1280
AE: Olá!
11:07
Yay.
182
655280
1216
Legal!
11:08
(Laughter)
183
656520
2296
(Risos)
11:10
So I want to tell you one thing
184
658840
1496
Quero dizer uma coisa
11:12
that you might not have seen
in that video,
185
660360
2296
que talvez vocês
não tenham visto no vídeo,
11:14
but one of the most critical parts
of the entire thing was the release
186
662680
3856
mas uma das partes mais críticas
de tudo isso foi a soltura
11:18
and what happens right after you release.
187
666560
2856
e o que acontece logo após ela.
11:21
And what we tried to do was use
something called a drogue parachute,
188
669440
4296
Tentamos usar algo chamado
paraquedas estabilizador,
11:25
and a drogue parachute
was there to stabilize me.
189
673760
2696
e ele estava lá para me estabilizar.
11:28
And I'll show you one of those right now.
190
676480
2056
Vou mostrar um a vocês agora.
11:30
If any of you have ever
gone tandem skydiving,
191
678560
2640
Se alguém aqui já saltou
de paraquedas lado a lado,
11:34
you probably used one of these.
192
682120
1520
provavelmente usou um desses.
11:38
But the problem with one of these things
193
686200
1936
Mas o problema dessa coisa
11:40
is right when you release,
you're in zero gravity.
194
688160
2936
é que, exatamente na soltura,
você está em gravidade zero.
11:43
So it's very easy for this
to just turn right around you.
195
691120
3616
Então, é bem fácil
ele se enroscar em você.
11:46
And before you know it,
you can be tangled up or spinning,
196
694760
3280
Antes que perceba,
você pode estar enrolado e girando,
11:51
or you can release this drogue late,
197
699320
2656
ou pode soltá-lo tarde,
11:54
in which case what happens
is you're going down at 800 miles an hour,
198
702000
4056
e aí você estará a 1.300 km por hora,
11:58
and this thing is going to destroy itself
199
706080
2496
e essa coisa vai se despedaçar
12:00
and not be very useful.
200
708600
1200
e não será muito útil.
12:03
But the guys at United Parachute
Technologies came up with this idea,
201
711400
4296
Mas o pessoal da United Parachute
Technologies tiveram uma ideia,
12:07
and it was a roll that looks like that,
202
715720
1936
e foi um rolo como esse,
12:09
but watch what happens when I pull it out.
203
717680
2680
mas observem o que acontece
quando eu o solto.
12:13
It's forming a pipe.
204
721560
1600
Ele forma uma tubo.
12:16
This pipe is so solid
205
724680
2200
Esse tubo é tão sólido
12:20
that you can take this drogue parachute
and wrap it around,
206
728360
3776
que você pode pegar
esse paraquedas estabilizador e enrolá-lo,
12:24
and there's no way
it will ever tangle with you.
207
732160
2320
mas ele jamais vai se enroscar em você.
12:27
And that prevented
a very serious potential problem.
208
735680
3240
Isso evitou um problema
potencial bem grave.
12:31
So nothing is possible
without an amazing team of people.
209
739560
2936
Nada é possível sem uma equipe incrível.
12:34
The core of this was about 20 people
210
742520
2456
O centro disso tudo
foram cerca de 20 pessoas
12:37
that worked on this for the three years,
211
745000
2096
que trabalharam nisso nos três anos,
e eles foram incríveis.
12:39
and they were incredible.
212
747120
1616
12:40
People asked me what the best part
of this whole thing was,
213
748760
2776
As pessoas me perguntavam
qual a melhor parte disso tudo:
foi a chance de trabalhar
com os melhores especialistas
12:43
and it was a chance
to work with the best experts
214
751560
2456
12:46
in meteorology and ballooning
and parachute technology
215
754040
4616
em meteorologia, balonismo,
tecnologia de paraquedas,
12:50
and environmental systems
and high altitude medicine.
216
758680
4456
sistemas ambientais
e medicina de grandes altitudes.
12:55
It was fantastic. It's an engineer's dream
to work with that group of people.
217
763160
4136
Foi fantástico. É o sonho de um engenheiro
trabalhar com esse grupo de pessoas.
12:59
And I also at the same time
wanted to thank my friends at Google,
218
767320
3256
E, ao mesmo tempo, queria agradecer
aos meus amigos da Google,
13:02
both for supporting me during this effort
219
770600
2856
por me apoiarem durante essa empreitada
13:05
and also covering for me
in the times that I was away.
220
773480
3296
e por me cobrirem quando eu estava fora.
13:08
But there's one other group
I wanted to thank, and that's my family.
221
776800
3296
Mas há um outro grupo ao qual gostaria
de agradecer: minha família.
13:12
Yay.
222
780120
1216
É!
13:13
(Applause)
223
781360
6216
(Aplausos)
13:19
I would constantly give them speeches
about the safety of technology,
224
787600
3696
Sempre dava aulas a elas
sobre tecnologia de segurança
13:23
and they weren't hearing any of it.
225
791320
2200
e eles não prestavam atenção em nada.
13:27
It was super hard on them,
226
795080
1376
Foi superdifícil para elas
13:28
and the only reason
that my wife put up with it
227
796480
2576
e a única razão de minha esposa
ter tolerado isso
13:31
was because I came back incredibly happy
after each of the 250 tests,
228
799080
5496
era eu voltar incrivelmente feliz
depois de cada um dos 250 testes,
13:36
and she didn't want
to take that away from me.
229
804600
2176
pois ela não queria tirar aquilo de mim.
13:38
So I want to close with a story.
230
806800
1776
Quero concluir com uma história.
13:40
My daughter Katelyn, my 15-year-old,
she and I were in the car,
231
808600
4576
Eu e minha filha Katelyn, de 15 anos,
estávamos no carro,
13:45
and we were driving down the road,
and she was sitting there,
232
813200
3456
na estrada, e ela estava sentada,
13:48
and she had this idea, and she goes,
"Dad, I've got this idea."
233
816680
3376
quando teve uma ideia e disse:
"Pai, tenho uma ideia".
13:52
And so I listened to her idea
and I said, "Katelyn, that's impossible."
234
820080
4520
Ouvi a ideia dela e disse:
"Katelyn, isso é impossível".
13:57
And she looks at me
235
825320
1616
Ela olhou para mim
13:58
and she goes, "Dad,
after what you just did,
236
826960
3336
e disse: "Pai, depois do que você fez,
14:02
how can you call anything impossible?"
237
830320
2400
como pode dizer que algo é impossível?"
14:05
And I laughed, and I said,
"OK, it's not impossible,
238
833760
3256
Eu ri e disse: "Certo, não é impossível;
só é bem, bem difícil".
14:09
it's just very, very hard."
239
837040
2400
14:12
And then I paused for a second,
and I said, "Katelyn,
240
840840
2896
Então, pausei por um segundo
e disse: "Katelyn,
14:15
it may not be impossible,
it may not even be very, very hard,
241
843760
3736
talvez não seja impossível;
talvez não seja nem bem, bem difícil.
14:19
it's just that I don't know how to do it."
242
847520
2776
É que eu não sei como fazer.
14:22
Thank you.
243
850320
1216
Obrigado.
