ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Emmett Shear - Entrepreneur, investor
Emmett Shear is the CEO and cofounder of Twitch and its predecessor justin.tv.

Why you should listen

Emmett Shear has lead Twitch -- a service that's helping to change the way people create, consume and participate in their entertainment -- since its founding in 2011. While it's known for gaming live-streams and esports, Twitch creators and communities have expanded to include music, traditional sports, cooking, the creative arts and more. Today, more than a million people, on average, are tuning in to Twitch at any given time to watch, chat and connect with people who share their passions.

Shear's unique perspective combines his experience as both an entrepreneur and part-time partner at venture capital firm Y Combinator, where he advises startups on product and strategy. He graduated from Yale University in 2005 with a degree in computer science.

11:07
At TwitchContracción nerviosa, we'venosotros tenemos startedempezado callingvocación this,
201
655333
2643
En Twitch, hemos empezado a llamarlo
"entretenimiento multijugador".
11:10
as a resultresultado, "multiplayermultijugador entertainmententretenimiento."
202
658000
3333
11:14
Because going from watchingacecho a videovídeo alonesolo
to watchingacecho a livevivir interactiveinteractivo streamcorriente
203
662333
6268
Porque pasar de ver un video solo
a ver un stream interactivo en directo
11:20
is similarsimilar to the differencediferencia betweenEntre
going from playingjugando a single-playerun solo jugador gamejuego
204
668625
6018
es parecido a la diferencia entre
pasar de jugar un juego para uno
11:26
to playingjugando a multiplayermultijugador gamejuego.
205
674667
2541
a jugar un juego multijugador.
11:30
GamersJugadores are oftena menudo as the forefrontprimer plano

Muchas veces, los gamers son la vanguardia

11:37
MicrocomputersMicroordenadores, for exampleejemplo,

Por ejemplo, las microcomputadoras
se utilizaron primero en videojuegos,

208

sino las Gameboys para videojuegos.
11:49
they were GameboysGameboys ...
209
697917
1726
11:51
for videovídeo gamesjuegos.
210
699667
1601
11:53
And as a resultresultado,
211
701292
3101
Por lo tanto, una manera de deducir
lo que nos depara el futuro
11:56
one way that you can get a hintinsinuación
of what the futurefuturo mightpodría holdsostener
212
704417
5351
12:01
is to look to this fundivertido, interactiveinteractivo
sandboxsalvadera of videovídeo gamesjuegos
213
709792
4392
es fijarse en este divertido e interactivo
"sandbox" de videojuegos
y preguntarse: "¿qué están
haciendo estos gamers ahora?".
12:06
and askpedir yourselftú mismo,
214
714208
2060
12:08
"what are these gamersjugadores doing todayhoy?"
215
716292

12:10
And that mightpodría give you a hintinsinuación

216
718292
3267
Y puede que eso les dé una pista
sobre lo que nos depara el futuro.
12:13
for all of us.
217
721583
1250
12:16
One of the things
we're alreadyya seeingviendo on TwitchContracción nerviosa
218
724250
2726
Una de las cosas que ya vemos en Twitch
es la introducción del entretenimiento
multijugador en los deportes.
12:19
is multiplayermultijugador entertainmententretenimiento
comingviniendo to sportsDeportes.
219
727000
2726
12:21
So, TwitchContracción nerviosa and the NFLNFL teamedunido up
to offeroferta livestreamingtransmisión en vivo footballfútbol,
220
729750
5018
Twitch y la NFL se han unido para
ofrecer streaming de fútbol en directo,
12:26
but insteaden lugar of networkred announcerslocutores
in suitstrajes streamingtransmisión the gamejuego,
221
734792
3976
pero en vez de presentadores en trajes
12:30
we got TwitchContracción nerviosa usersusuarios to come in
222
738792
2684
tenemos como presentadores
a usuarios de Twitch
12:33

12:38
and make it a realreal multiplayermultijugador experienceexperiencia.
225
746667
3309
haciendo que esto sea una verdadera
experiencia multijugador.
12:42
So I actuallyactualmente think that if you
look out into the futurefuturo --
226
750000
5434
En realidad pienso
que si miramos al futuro,
12:47
only hundredscientos of people todayhoy
get to be sportsDeportes announcerslocutores.
227
755458
4584
tan solo unos cientos de personas
consiguen ser locutores deportivos.
12:53
It's a tinyminúsculo, tinyminúsculo numbernúmero of people
who have that opportunityoportunidad.
228
761458
3018
Son muy pocas las personas
que tienen esa oportunidad.
12:56
But sportsDeportes are about to go multiplayermultijugador,
229
764500
3934
Pero los deportes están a punto
de pasar a ser multijugador,
13:00
and that meansmedio that anyonenadie
who wants to around the worldmundo
230
768458
2851
y eso significa que cualquier persona
13:03
is going to get the opportunityoportunidad

231
771333
4726
tendrá la oportunidad
de convertirse en locutor deportivo,
13:08
to give it a shotDisparo.
232
776083

e intentar triunfar.
13:09
And I think that's going to unlockdesbloquear
incredibleincreíble amountscantidades of newnuevo talenttalento
233
777625
3184
Creo que eso potenciará
un montón de nuevos talentos
para todos nosotros.
13:12
for all of us.
234
780833
1268
13:14
And we're not going to be askingpreguntando,
"Did you catchcaptura the gamejuego?"
235
782125
2976
Y ya no vamos a preguntar:
"¿Han visto el partido?".
13:17
InsteadEn lugar, we're going to be askingpreguntando,
236
785125
1934
En vez de eso preguntaremos:
"¿En el canal de quién
han visto el partido?".
13:19
"WhoseCuyo channelcanal did you catchcaptura the gamejuego on?"
237
787083
3125
13:24
We alreadyya see this happeningsucediendo

13:28
we even see people streamingtransmisión weldingsoldadura.

Incluso podemos ver

13:32
And all of this stuffcosas is going to happenocurrir
