ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Murray Gell-Mann - Physicist
Murray Gell-Mann brings visibility to a crucial aspect of our existence that we can't actually see: elemental particles. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for introducing quarks, one of two fundamental ingredients for all matter in the universe.

Why you should listen

He's been called "the man with five brains" -- and Murray Gell-Mann has the resume to prove it. In addition to being a Nobel laureate, he is an accomplished physicist who's earned numerous awards, medals and honorary degrees for his work with subatomic particles, including the groundbreaking theory that the nucleus of an atom comprises 100 or so fundamental building blocks called quarks.

Gell-Mann's influence extends well beyond his field: He's a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Council on Foreign Relations. He also serves on the board of the Wildlife Conservation Society and is a director of Encyclopedia Britannica. Gell-Mann, a professor emeritus of Caltech, now heads the evolution of human languages program at the Santa Fe Institute, which he cofounded in 1984.

A prolific writer -- he's penned scores of academic papers and several books, including The Quark and the Jaguar -- Gell-Mann is also the subject of the popular science biography Strange Beauty: Murray Gell-Mann and the Revolution in 20th-Century Physics.

The main본관 thing I want to talk about is this:

that we have this remarkable주목할 만한 experience경험 in this field of fundamental기본적인 physics물리학

And why on earth지구 could that be so?
15

01:17
Well, here's여기에 an example from my own개인적인 experience경험.
16
65000
3000
01:20
It's fairly dramatic극적인, actually사실은, to have this happen우연히 있다.

01:42
And we published출판 된 before knowing that,

23

3000
01:47
The experiments실험 had to be wrong잘못된, and they were.
24

01:50

02:11
Now, why does stuff물건 like that work? That's the question문제.
29
119000
3000
02:14
Now, yeah, what do we mean by beautiful아름다운? That's one thing.
30
122000
5000
02:19
I'll try to make that clear명확한 -- partially부분적으로 clear명확한.
31
127000

02:22
Why should it work, and is this something to do with human인간의 beings존재들?

03:43
we can still think there is one out there,
53

03:46
and we're just trying견딜 수 없는 to get closer더 가까운 and closer더 가까운 to it.
54
214000

03:48
I think that's the main본관 point포인트 to be made만든.
55
216000
3000
03:51
We express표하다 these things mathematically수학적으로.
56
219000
3000
03:54
And when the mathematics수학 is very simple단순한 --
57
222000
2000
03:56
when in terms자귀 of some mathematical매우 정확한 notation표기법,
58
224000
4000
04:00
you can write쓰다 the theory이론 in a very brief간결한 space공간, without없이 a lot of complication복잡 --
59
228000
6000
04:06
that's essentially본질적으로 what we mean by beauty아름다움 or elegance우아.
60
234000
4000
04:10
Here's여기에 what I was saying속담 about the laws법률. They're really there.
61
238000
6000
04:16
Newton뉴턴 certainly확실히 believed믿었다 that.
62
244000
2000
04:18
And he said, here, "It is the business사업 of natural자연스러운 philosophy철학 to find out those laws법률."
63
246000
10000
04:28
The basic기본 law, let's say -- here's여기에 an assumption인수.
64
256000
3000
04:31
The assumption인수 is that the basic기본 law really takes the form형태
65
259000
3000
04:34
of a unified통일 된 theory이론 of all the particles입자.
66
262000
3000
04:37
Now, some people call that a theory이론 of everything.
67
265000
3000
04:40
That's wrong잘못된 because the theory이론 is quantum양자 mechanical기계의.
68
268000
5000
04:45
And I won't습관 go into a lot of stuff물건 about quantum양자 mechanics역학 and what it's like, and so on.
69
273000
4000
04:49
You've heard들었던 a lot of wrong잘못된 things about it anyway어쨌든. (Laughter웃음)
70
277000
5000
04:54
There are even movies영화 산업 about it with a lot of wrong잘못된 stuff물건.
71
282000
3000
04:57
But the main본관 thing here is that it predicts예측하다 probabilities확률.
72
285000
5000
05:02
Now, sometimes때때로 those probabilities확률 are near가까운 certainties확실성.
73
290000
3000
05:05
And in a lot of familiar익숙한 cases사례, they of course코스 are.
74
293000
3000
05:08
But other times타임스 they're not, and you have only probabilities확률 for different다른 outcomes결과.
75
296000
6000
05:14
So what that means방법 is that the history역사 of the universe우주 is not determined결정된 just by the fundamental기본적인 law.
76
302000
6000
05:20
It's the fundamental기본적인 law and this incredibly엄청나게 long series시리즈 of accidents사고,
77
308000
5000
05:25
or chance기회 outcomes결과, that are there in addition부가.
78
313000
5000
05:30
And the fundamental기본적인 theory이론 doesn't include포함 those chance기회 outcomes결과; they are in addition부가.
79
318000
6000
05:36
So it's not a theory이론 of everything. And in fact, a huge거대한 amount of the information정보
80
324000
4000
05:40
in the universe우주 around us comes온다 from those accidents사고,
81
328000
4000
05:44
and not just from the fundamental기본적인 laws법률.
82
332000
3000
05:47
Now, it's often자주 said that getting점점 closer더 가까운 and closer더 가까운
83
335000
8000
05:55

84

and then still shorter더 짧은 distances거리, and so on, is like peeling필링 the skin피부 of an onion양파.
86
351000
4000
06:07
And we keep doing that,
87
355000
2000
06:09
and build짓다 more powerful강한 machines기계들, accelerators촉진제 for particles입자.
88
357000
4000
06:13
We look deeper더 깊은 and deeper더 깊은 into the structure구조 of particles입자,
89
361000
5000
06:18
and in that way we get probably아마 closer더 가까운 and closer더 가까운 to this fundamental기본적인 law.
90
366000
7000
06:25
Now, what happens일이 is that as we do that, as we peel껍질 these skins스킨 of the onion양파,
91
373000
6000
06:31

92

06:43
and we see they use very similar비슷한 mathematics수학.
