ABOUT THE SPEAKER
E.O. Wilson - Biologist
Biologist E.O. Wilson explores the world of ants and other tiny creatures, and writes movingly about the way all creatures great and small are interdependent.

Why you should listen

One of the world's most distinguished scientists, E.O. Wilson is a professor and honorary curator in entomology at Harvard. In 1975, he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis, a work that described social behavior, from ants to humans.

Drawing from his deep knowledge of the Earth's "little creatures" and his sense that their contribution to the planet's ecology is underappreciated, he produced what may be his most important book, The Diversity of Life. In it he describes how an intricately interconnected natural system is threatened by man's encroachment, in a crisis he calls the "sixth extinction" (the fifth one wiped out the dinosaurs).

With his most recent book, The Creation, he wants to put the differences of science- and faith-based explanations aside "to protect Earth's vanishing natural habitats and species ...; in other words, the Creation, however we believe it came into existence." A recent documentary called Behold the Earth illustrates this human relationship to nature, or rather separation from an originally intended human bond with nature, through music, imagery, and thoughtful words from both Christians and scientists, including Wilson.

There will come a time, of course,

Chegará um tempo, claro,

when the exponential growth of discovery and knowledge,

Campos de estudo tradicionais vão continuar a crescer

and in so doing, inevitably they will meet and create new disciplines.
38
124038
4825
02:24
In time, all of science will come to be
39
128863

02:28
a continuum of description, an explanation of networks, of principles and laws.
40
132710
5456
02:34
That's why you need not just be training
41
138166
3200
02:37
in one specialty, but also acquire breadth in other fields,
42
141366
4440

related to and even distant from your own initial choice.

It was put there by our distant ancestors

Foi colocada lá por nossos ancestrais distantes

who spread across the world,

To understand and use it sanely,

Entendê-la e usá-la sensatamente,
03:02
as a part of the civilization yet to evolve
50
166527
3959
03:06
requires a vastly larger population of scientifically trained people like you.
51
170486
5842

In education, medicine, law, diplomacy,

Em educação, medicina, leis, diplomacia,

no applause, please.

sem aplausos, por favor.

It will be better for all
57

Será melhor para todos

if they prepare before entering office rather than learning on the job.
58
196712

03:37
Therefore you will do well to act on the side,

03:40
no matter how far into the laboratory
60
204542
2705
não importa quão longe consigam ir
03:43
you may go, to serve as teachers
61

no laboratório, para servir como professores
03:46
during the span of your career.
62
210566

durante a duração de suas carreiras.
03:48
I'll now proceed quickly,
63
212574

Irei agora, rapidamente
03:50
and before else, to a subject that is both a vital asset
64
214649
3189
03:53
and a potential barrier to a scientific career.
65
217838

If you are a bit short in mathematical skills,

Many of the most successful scientists

Muitos dos mais bem sucedidos cientistas

at work today are mathematically semi-literate.

A metaphor will serve here:
70
232790
2485
Uma metáfora se aplica aqui:
04:11
Where elite mathematicians and statisticians
71
235275
6003
onde matemáticos, estatísticos e teoristas de elite
04:17
and theorists often serve as architects in the expanding realm

of science, the remaining large majority of
73

da ciência, a grande maioria restante de
04:25
basic applied scientists, including a large portion of those who could be
74
250046
4712
04:30
said to be of the first rank, are the ones who map the terrain, they scout
75

04:36
the frontiers, they cut the pathways,

as fronteiras, eles cortam caminhos,
04:38
they raise the buildings along the way.

eles levantam edifícios ao longo do percurso.
04:41
Some may have considered me foolhardy,
78

Alguns podem me considerar imprudente,
04:44
but it's been my habit to brush aside the fear of mathematics
79
268774
3761
04:48
when talking to candidate scientists.
80

quando falo com futuros cientistas.

During 41 years of teaching biology at Harvard,

Durante 41 anos lecionando biologia em Harvard,

I watched sadly as bright students turned away

presenciei, tristemente, estudantes brilhantes se afastarem
04:58
from the possibility of a scientific career
83
282515

da possibilidade de uma carreira científica,
05:01
or even from taking non-required courses in science
84
285439

05:05
because they were afraid of failure.
85

porque tinham medo de falhar.
05:06
These math-phobes deprive science and medicine
86
290998

Essas fobias com matemática privam ciência e medicina

of immeasurable amounts of badly needed talent.

Here's how to relax your anxieties, if you have them:

Eis como aliviar suas ansiedades, se é que as têm:
05:17
Understand that mathematics is a language
89
301558

entendam que matemática é uma linguagem
05:20
ruled like other verbal languages,
90

3824
regulada como outras linguagens verbais,
05:23
or like verbal language generally, by its own grammar

que aprende a ler e escrever matemática
05:34
at an elementary level will, as in verbal language, have little difficulty
95

no nível fundamental, como a linguagem verbal, terá pouca dificuldade
05:41
picking up most of the fundamentals

em captar a maioria dos fundamentos,

if they choose to master the mathspeak of most disciplines of science.

05:48
The longer you wait to become at least semi-literate
98
333031

05:52
the harder the language of mathematics will be to master, just as again in any verbal
99
336814
6008
05:58
language, but it can be done at any age.

342822
2977

06:03
on that subject, because I'm an extreme case.

06:07
I didn't take algebra until my freshman year

I finally got around to calculus as a 32-year-old tenured professor at Harvard,

06:20
where I sat uncomfortably in classes with undergraduate students,
107
364278
4626
06:24
little more than half my age.

06:31
I swallowed my pride, and I learned calculus.
111
376062
5256
Engoli meu orgulho e aprendi cálculo.
06:37
I found out that in science and all its applications,
112

3096
06:40
what is crucial is not that technical ability,
113
384414
3962
06:44
but it is imagination in all of its applications.
114
388376
3169
mas a imaginação em todas suas aplicações.
06:47
The ability to form concepts with images of entities and processes

2936
desenhados pela intuição.
06:54
I found out that advances in science rarely come upstream
117
398815
4344
06:59
from an ability to stand at a blackboard
118
403159
3032
07:02
and conjure images from unfolding mathematical propositions

3135
e evocar imagens de desdobramentos de proposições matemáticas
07:05
and equations.

e equações.
07:07
They are instead the products of downstream imagination leading to hard work,
121
411182
5432
07:12
during which mathematical reasoning may or may not prove to be relevant.
122
416614
4560
07:17
Ideas emerge when a part of the real or imagined world is studied

07:22
for its own sake.
124
426373

por si mesmo.
07:23
Of foremost importance is a thorough, well-organized knowledge
125
427790

07:29
of all that is known of the relevant entities and processes that might be involved in that domain

07:35
you propose to enter.

em que vocês se propuseram entrar.
07:37
When something new is discovered,
128
441520
2126
Quando algo novo é descoberto,
07:39
it's logical then that one of the follow-up steps is
129
443646
4969
07:44
to find the mathematical and statistical methods to move its analysis forward.
130
448615
4152
encontrar métodos matemáticos e estatísticos para levar a análise adiante.
07:48
If that step proves too difficult for
131
452767

07:51
the person or team that made the discovery,
132
455319
4172
07:55
a mathematician can then be added by them
133
459491
5299
um matemático pode juntar-se a eles
08:00
as a collaborator.
134
464790
2297
como colaborador.
08:02
Consider the following principle,
135
467087
2159
Considerem o seguinte princípio,
08:05
which I will modestly call Wilson's Principle Number One:
136
469246
5200
08:10
It is far easier for scientists
137
474446
4400
É muito mais fácil para cientistas,
08:14
including medical researchers, to require needed collaboration
138
478846
4569
incluindo pesquisadores médicos, requisitar colaboração
08:19
in mathematics and statistics
139
483415
2118
em matemática e estatística
08:21
than it is for mathematicians and statisticians
140
485533
3681
do que é para matemáticos e estatísticos
08:25
to find scientists able to make use of their equations.
141
489214
4096
08:29
It is important in choosing the direction to take in science
142
493310
4094
08:33
to find the subject at your level of competence that interests you deeply,
143
497404
5746
08:39
and focus on that.
144
503150
1640
e focalizar isso.
08:40
Keep in mind, then, Wilson's Second Principle:
145
504790
4696
Lembrem-se, então, do Segundo Princípio de Wilson.
08:45
For every scientist, whether researcher, technician,
146
509486
4536
Para cada cientista, seja pesquisador, técnico,
08:49
teacher, manager or businessman,
147
514022
3095
professor, gerente ou empresário,
08:53
working at any level of mathematical competence,
148
517117
3987
trabalhando em qualquer nível de competência matemática,
08:57
there exists a discipline in science or medicine
149
521104
3454
existe uma disciplina em ciência ou medicina
09:00
for which that level is enough to achieve excellence.
150
524558
3936
para a qual aquele nível é suficiente para atingir excelência.
09:04
Now I'm going to offer quickly
151
528494
2560
Agora vou apresentar rapidamente
09:06
several more principles that will be useful
152
531054
2408
vários princípios mais que serão úteis
09:09
in organizing your education and career,
153
533462
2688
na organização de sua educação e carreira,
09:12
or if you're teaching, how you might
154
536150
4385
ou se você está lecionando, como pode
09:16
enhance your own teaching and counseling of young scientists.
155
540535
4888
09:21
In selecting a subject in which to conduct original research,
156
545423
3799
09:25
or to develop world-class expertise,
157
549222
3200
ou desenvolver especialidade reconhecida mundialmente,
09:28
take a part of the chosen discipline that is sparsely inhabited.
158
552422
5328
09:33
Judge opportunity by how few other students and researchers
159
557750
4712
Julgue a oportunidade por quão poucos estudantes e pesquisadores
09:38
are on hand.
160
562462
1536
estão à mão.
09:39
This is not to de-emphasize the essential requirement
161
563998
3650
Isto não é tirar a ênfase do requisito essencial
09:43
of broad training, or the value of apprenticing yourself
162
567648
3439
09:46
in ongoing research to programs of high quality.
163
571087
4463
09:51
It is important also to acquire older mentors within these successful
164
575550
4728
09:56
programs, and to make friends and colleagues of your age
165
580278
3888
10:00
for mutual support.
166
584166
1856
para apoio mútuo.
10:01
But through it all, look for a way to break out,
167
586022
2688
Mas, em tudo isso, procure um modo de sobressair-se,
10:04
to find a field and subject not yet popular.
168
588710
3936
10:08
We have seen this demonstrated already in the talks preceding mine.
169
592646
3777
10:12
There is the quickest way advances are likely to occur,
170
596423
5111
10:17
as measured in discoveries per investigator per year.
171
601534
3617
medidos em descobertas por investigador por ano.
10:21
You may have heard the
172
605151
1607
Vocês devem ter ouvido a
10:22
military dictum for the gathering of armies:
173
606758
3760
máxima militar para a reunião de exércitos:
10:26
March to the sound of the guns.
174
610518
2721
marche para o som das armas.
10:29
In science, the exact opposite is the case: March away from the sound of the guns.
175
613239
6510
10:35
So Wilson's Principle Number Three:
176
619749
2705
Então, o Princípio Número Três de Wilson:
10:38
March away from the sound of the guns.
177
622454
3344
marche para longe do som das armas.
10:41
Observe from a distance,
178
625798
1864
Observe à distância,
10:43
but do not join the fray.
179
627662
2097
mas não participe da batalha.
10:45
Make a fray of your own.
180
629759
2368
Faça sua própria batalha.
10:48
Once you have settled on a specialty,
181
632127
4255
Assim que determinar a especialidade,
10:52
and the profession you can love, and you've secured opportunity,
182
636382
5280
10:57
your potential to succeed will be greatly enhanced if you study it
183
641662
5281
11:02
enough to become an expert.
184
646943
2680
o bastante para tornar-se um especialista.
11:05
There are thousands of professionally delimited
185
649623
3327
Há milhares de assuntos profissionalmente delimitados
11:08
subjects sprinkled through physics and chemistry
186
652950
2476
espalhados por física e química,
11:11
to biology and medicine.
187
655426
1916
biologia e medicina.
11:13
And on then into the social sciences,
188
657342
2896
E também nas ciências sociais,
11:16
where it is possible in short time to acquire
189
660238
3202
11:19
the status of an authority.
190
663440
2574
o status de autoridade.
11:21
When the subject is still very thinly populated,
191
666014
3512
11:25
you can with diligence and hard work become
192
669526
2621
11:28
the world authority.
193
672147
2211
a autoridade mundial.
11:30
The world needs this kind of expertise,
194
674358
3961
O mundo precisa desse tipo de especialidade,
11:34
and it rewards the kind of people
195
678319
2175
e recompensa o tipo de pessoa
11:36
willing to acquire it.
196
680494
2152
desejosa de adquiri-la.
11:38
The existing information and what you self-discover
197
682646
4496
11:43
may at first seem skimpy and difficult to connect
198
687142
4111
11:47
to other bodies of knowledge.
199
691253
2036
com outros corpos de conhecimento.
11:49
Well, if that's the case,
200
693289
1869
Bem, se é esse o caso,
11:51
good. Why hard instead of easy?
201
695158
4142
bom. Por que difícil no lugar de fácil?
11:55
The answer deserves to be stated as Principle Number Four.
202
699300
4855
12:00
In the attempt to make scientific discoveries,
203
704155
3419
Na tentativa de fazer descobertas científicas,
12:03
every problem is an opportunity,
204
707574
1993
todo problema é uma oportunidade,
12:05
and the more difficult the problem,
205
709567
1495
e quanto mais difícil o problema,
12:06
the greater will be the importance of its solution.
206
711062
2760
maior será a importância de sua solução.
12:09
Now this brings me to a basic categorization
207
713822
3808
Agora, isto me traz para uma categorização básica
12:13
in the way scientific discoveries are made.
208
717630
2875
12:16
Scientists, pure mathematicians among them,
209
720505
3364
Os cientistas, entre eles os matemáticos puros,
12:19
follow one or the other of two pathways:
210
723869
3267
seguem dois caminhos.
12:23
First through early discoveries,
211
727136
2110
Primeiro, através de descobertas anteriores,
12:25
a problem is identified
212
729246
2144
um problema é identificado
12:27
and a solution is sought.
213
731390
1832
e uma solução é buscada.
12:29
The problem may be relatively small;
214
733222
2529
O problema pode ser relativamente circunscrito;
12:31
for example, where exactly in a cruise ship does the norovirus begin to spread?
215
735751
5421
12:37
Or larger, what's the role of dark matter in the expansion of the universe?
216
741172
5906
12:42
As the answer is sought, other phenomena are typically discovered
217
747078
4459
12:47
and other questions are asked.
218
751537
1645
e outras questões são levantadas.
12:49
This first of the two strategies is like a hunter,
219
753182
3016
12:52
exploring a forest in search of a particular quarry,
220
756198
4249
12:56
who finds other quarries along the way.
221
760447
2919
12:59
The second strategy of research
222
763366
2832
A segunda estratégia de pesquisa
13:02
is to study a subject broadly
223
766198
1792
é estudar um assunto amplamente,
13:03
searching for unknown phenomena or patterns of known phenomena
224
767990
4776
13:08
like a hunter in what we call "the naturalist's trance,"
225
772766
3801
13:12
the researcher of mind is open to anything interesting,
226
776567
3663
a mente do pesquisador está aberta a qualquer coisa interessante,
13:16
any quarry worth taking.
227
780230
1384
qualquer presa de valor.
13:17
The search is not for the solution of the problem,
228
781614
2353
13:19
but for problems themselves worth solving.
229
783967
3207
13:23
The two strategies of research,
230
787174
1992
As duas estratégias de pesquisa,
13:25
original research, can be stated as follows,
231
789166
3185
pesquisa original, podem ser explicadas como segue,
13:28
in the final principle I'm going to offer you:
232
792351
4288
no princípio final que vou expor a vocês.
13:32
For every problem in a given discipline of science,
233
796639
4264
13:36
there exists a species or entity or phenomenon
234
800903
3575
existe uma espécie, ou entidade, ou fenômeno
13:40
ideal for its solution.
235
804478
1946
ideal para sua solução.
13:42
And conversely, for every species or other entity
236
806424
5398
13:47
or phenomenon, there exist important problems
237
811822
2936
ou fenômeno, existem problemas importantes
13:50
for the solution of which, those particular objects of research are ideally suited.
238
814758
7577
13:58
Find out what they are.
239
822335
1937
Descubra quais são.
14:00
You'll find your own way to discover,
240
824272
3135
Você encontrará sua própria maneira de descobrir,
14:03
to learn, to teach.
241
827407

de aprender, de ensinar.

The decades ahead will see dramatic advances

14:19
behind it you will master.
245
843615
1583
por trás disso vocês dominarão.
14:21
You have chosen a calling that will come in steps
246
845198
3464
14:24
to give you satisfaction, at its conclusion, of a life well lived.
247
848662
