ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jane McGonigal - Game Designer
Reality is broken, says Jane McGonigal, and we need to make it work more like a game. Her work shows us how.

Why you should listen

Jane McGonigal asks: Why doesn't the real world work more like an online game? In the best-designed games, our human experience is optimized: We have important work to do, we're surrounded by potential collaborators, and we learn quickly and in a low-risk environment. In her work as a game designer, she creates games that use mobile and digital technologies to turn everyday spaces into playing fields, and everyday people into teammates. Her game-world insights can explain--and improve--the way we learn, work, solve problems, and lead our real lives. She served as the director of game R&D at the Institute for the Future, and she is the founder of Gameful, which she describes as "a secret headquarters for worldchanging game developers."

Several years ago she suffered a serious concussion, and she created a multiplayer game to get through it, opening it up to anyone to play. In “Superbetter,” players set a goal (health or wellness) and invite others to play with them--and to keep them on track. While most games, and most videogames, have traditionally been about winning, we are now seeing increasing collaboration and games played together to solve problems.

I'm Jane McGonigal. I'm a game designer.

2000
Eu sou Jane McGonigal. Sou uma designer de jogos.
00:17
I've been making games online now for 10 years,
1
2000
3000
Há 10 anos eu venho fazendo jogos online.
00:20
and my goal for the next decade
2
5000
3000
E o meu objetivo para a próxima década
00:23
is to try to make it as easy
3
8000
2000
é fazer com que seja tão fácil
00:25
to save the world in real life
4
10000
3000
salvar o mundo na vida real
00:28
as it is to save the world in online games.
5
13000
3000
como salvar o mundo em jogos online.
00:31
Now, I have a plan for this,
6
16000
2000
00:33
and it entails convincing more people,
7
18000
3000
um plano que envolve convencer mais pessoas,
00:36
including all of you, to spend more time
8
21000
3000
incluindo todos vocês, a gastar mais tempo
00:39
playing bigger and better games.
9
24000
2000
jogando jogos maiores e melhores.
00:41
Right now we spend three billion hours a week
10
26000
3000
00:44
playing online games.
11
29000
2000
jogando jogos online.
00:46
Some of you might be thinking,
12
31000
2000
Alguns de vocês devem estar pensando:
00:48
"That's a lot of time to spend playing games.
13
33000
2000
"Isso é bastante tempo para se gastar jogando."
00:50
Maybe too much time, considering
14
35000
2000
Talvez tempo demais, levando-se em conta
00:52
how many urgent problems we have to solve in the real world."
15
37000
3000
00:55
But actually, according to my research
16
40000
2000
00:57
at The Institute For The Future,
17
42000
2000
no Instituto Para o Futuro,
00:59
it's actually the opposite is true.
18
44000
3000
realmente, o oposto é verdadeiro.
01:02
Three billion hours a week is not nearly enough
19
47000
2000
01:04
game play to solve the world's most urgent problems.
20
49000
3000
01:07
In fact, I believe that if we want to survive
21
52000
3000
01:10
the next century on this planet,
22
55000
2000
ao próximo século neste planeta,
01:12
we need to increase that total dramatically.
23
57000
2000
01:14
I've calculated the total we need
24
59000
2000
01:16
at 21 billion hours of game play every week.
25
61000
4000
21 bilhões de horas de jogo por semana.
01:20
So, that's probably a bit of a counterintuitive idea,
26
65000
3000
Provavelmente, esta é uma idéia contra-intuitiva,
01:23
so I'll say it again, let it sink in:
27
68000
3000
01:26
If we want to solve problems like hunger,
28
71000
2000
Se quisermos solucionar problemas como a fome,
01:28
poverty, climate change, global conflict, obesity,
29
73000
3000
pobreza, mudanças climáticas, conflitos globais, obesidade,
01:31
I believe that we need to aspire
30
76000
2000
acredito que temos que aspirar
01:33
to play games online
31
78000
2000
a jogar jogos online
01:35
for at least 21 billion hours a week,
32
80000
2000
01:37
by the end of the next decade. (Laughter)
33
82000
2000
até o fim da próxima década. (Risos)
01:39
No. I'm serious. I am.
34
84000
3000
Estou falando sério. Mesmo.
01:42
Here's why. This picture pretty much
35
87000
2000
Aqui está a razão. Esta foto
01:44
sums up why I think games are so essential
36
89000
2000
01:46
to the future survival of the human species. (Laughter) Truly.
37
91000
4000
para a sobrevivência futura da espécie humana. (Risos) De verdade.
01:50
This is a portrait by a photographer named Phil Toledano.
38
95000
3000
01:53
He wanted to capture the emotion of gaming,
39
98000
3000
Ele queria capturar a emoção de jogar.
01:56
so he set up a camera in front of gamers while they were playing.
40
101000
2000
01:58
And this is a classic gaming emotion.
41
103000
4000
02:02
Now, if you're not a gamer,
42
107000
2000
Agora, se você não é um jogador,
02:04
you might miss some of the nuance in this photo.
43
109000
2000
02:06
You probably see the sense of urgency,
44
111000
3000
02:09
a little bit of fear, but intense concentration,
45
114000
3000
um pouco de medo, mas concentração intensa,
02:12
deep, deep focus on tackling a really difficult problem.
46
117000
4000
02:16
If you are a gamer, you will notice
47
121000
2000
Se você é um jogador, você verá
02:18
a few nuances here: the crinkle of the eyes up, and around the mouth
48
123000
4000
02:22
is a sign of optimism,
49
127000
2000
é um sinal de otimismo.
02:24
and the eyebrows up is surprise.
50
129000
2000
E as sobrancelhas para cima significam surpresa.
02:26
This is a gamer who is on the verge of something called
51
131000
3000
02:29
an epic win.
52
134000
2000
de uma vitória épica.
02:31
(Laughter)
53
136000
1000
(Risos)
02:32
Oh, you've heard of that. OK, good,
54
137000
2000
Ah, vocês já ouviram falar disso. Certo. Bom.
02:34
so we have some gamers among us.
55
139000
2000
Então nós temos alguns jogadores entre nós.
02:36
An epic win is an outcome
56
141000
2000
Uma vitória épica é um resultado
02:38
that is so extraordinarily positive
57
143000
2000
tão extraordinariamente positivo
02:40
you had no idea it was even possible until you achieved it.
58
145000
3000
02:43
It was almost beyond the threshold of imagination.
59
148000
3000
Estava quase além dos limites da imaginação.
02:46
And when you get there you are shocked
60
151000
2000
E quando você o alcança, fica chocado
02:48
to discover what you are truly capable of. That is an epic win.
61
153000
3000
02:51
This is a gamer on the verge of an epic win.
62
156000
2000
02:53
And this is the face that we need to see
63
158000
3000
02:56
on millions of problem-solvers all over the world
64
161000
3000
02:59
as we try to tackle the obstacles of the next century --
65
164000
3000
03:02
the face of someone who, against all odds
66
167000
3000
03:05
is on the verge of an epic win.
67
170000
2000
está prestes a conseguir uma vitória épica.
03:07
Now, unfortunately this is more of the face that we see
68
172000
3000
03:10
in everyday life now as we try to tackle urgent problems.
69
175000
3000
03:13
This is what I call the "I'm Not Good At Life" face,
70
178000
2000
É o que chamo da face "Não sou bom em viver".
03:15
and this is actually me making it. Can you see? Yes. Good.
71
180000
3000
E esta sou eu fazendo-a. Podem ver? Sim. Bom.
03:18
This is actually me making the "I'm Not Good At Life" face.
72
183000
3000
03:21
This is a piece of graffiti in my old neighborhood
73
186000
2000
03:23
in Berkeley, California, where I did my PhD
74
188000
2000
em Berkeley, Califórnia, onde fiz meu PhD
03:25
on why we're better in games than we are in real life.
75
190000
4000
03:29
And this is a problem that a lot of gamers have.
76
194000
2000
03:31
We feel that we are not as good in reality as we are in games.
77
196000
4000
03:35
And I don't mean just good as in successful,
78
200000
2000
03:37
although that's part of it.
79
202000
2000
embora seja parte disto.
03:39
We do achieve more in game worlds. But I also
80
204000
2000
03:41
mean good as in
81
206000
2000
03:43
motivated to do something that matters,
82
208000
2000
03:45
inspired to collaborate and to cooperate.
83
210000
2000
inspirado para colaborar e cooperar.
03:47
And when we're in game worlds
84
212000
2000
E quando estamos no mundo dos jogos
03:49
I believe that many of us become
85
214000
2000
eu acredito que nós nos tornamos
03:51
the best version of ourselves, the most likely to help at a moment's notice,
86
216000
3000
03:54
the most likely to stick with a problem
87
219000
2000
03:56
as long at it takes, to get up after failure and try again.
88
221000
3000
03:59
And in real life, when we face failure,
89
224000
4000
04:03
when we confront obstacles, we often don't feel that way.
90
228000
2000
04:05
We feel overcome,
91
230000
2000
Nós nos sentimos derrotados.
04:07
we feel overwhelmed,
92
232000
2000
Nós nos sentimos dominados.
04:09
we feel anxious, maybe depressed, frustrated or cynical.
93
234000
3000
04:12
We never have those feelings when we're playing games,
94
237000
2000
Nós nunca temos estes sentimentos quando estamos jogando,
04:14
they just don't exist in games.
95
239000
2000
eles simplesmente não existem nos jogos.
04:16
So, that's what I wanted to study
96
241000
2000
Então, isto é o que sempre quis estudar
04:18
when I was a graduate student.
97
243000
2000
quando me formei.
04:20
What about games makes it impossible
98
245000
2000
04:22
to feel that we can't achieve everything?
99
247000
2000
nos sentirmos um fracasso?
04:24
How can we take those feelings from games
100
249000
3000
04:27
and apply them to real-world work?
101
252000
2000
e aplicá-los no mundo real?
04:29
So, I looked at games like World of Warcraft,
102
254000
2000
Observei jogos como World of Warcraft,
04:31
which is really the ideal collaborative problem-solving environment.
103
256000
3000
04:34
And I started to notice a few things
104
259000
2000
Assim, comecei a perceber algumas coisas
04:36
that make epic wins so possible in online worlds.
105
261000
3000
04:39
So, the first thing is whenever you show up in one of these online games,
106
264000
3000
A primeira coisa é que sempre que você entra nestes jogos online,
04:42
especially in World of Warcraft,
107
267000
2000
especialmente em World of Warcraft,
04:44
there are lots and lots of different characters
108
269000
3000
existem vários e vários personagens diferentes
04:47
who are willing to trust you with a world-saving mission, right away.
109
272000
4000
04:51
But not just any mission, it's a mission that is perfectly matched
110
276000
3000
04:54
with your current level in the game. Right?
111
279000
2000
com o seu atual nível no jogo. Certo?
04:56
So, you can do it.
112
281000
2000
Então você consegue.
04:58
They never give you a challenge that you can't achieve.
113
283000
2000
05:00
But it is on the verge of what you're capable of. So, you have to try hard,
114
285000
4000
05:04
but there's no unemployment in World of Warcraft.
115
289000
2000
Mas não existe desemprego em World of Warcraft.
05:06
There is no sitting around wringing your hands,
116
291000
2000
05:08
there's always something specific and important to be done.
117
293000
3000
05:11
And there are also tons of collaborators.
118
296000
2000
E sempre há, também, diversos colaboradores.
05:13
Everywhere you go, hundreds of thousands of people
119
298000
2000
05:15
ready to work with you
120
300000
2000
estarão prontas a trabalhar com você
05:17
to achieve your epic mission.
121
302000
2000
para completar a sua missão épica.
05:19
That's not something that we have in real life that easily,
122
304000
2000
05:21
this sense that at our fingertips
123
306000
2000
05:23
are tons of collaborators.
124
308000
2000
vários colaboradores.
05:25
And also there is this epic story, this inspiring story
125
310000
2000
05:27
of why we're there, and what we're doing.
126
312000
2000
a estar ali, o porquê de estarmos fazendo aquilo.
05:29
And then we get all this positive feedback.
127
314000
2000
Então recebemos todo este feedback positivo.
05:31
You guys have heard of leveling up and plus-one strength,
128
316000
2000
05:33
and plus-one intelligence.
129
318000
2000
mais um ponto de inteligência.
05:35
We don't get that kind of constant feedback in real life.
130
320000
2000
05:37
When I get off this stage I'm not going to have
131
322000
3000
Quando eu sair deste palco, não terei
05:40
plus-one speaking, and plus-one crazy idea,
132
325000
3000
05:43
plus-20 crazy idea.
133
328000
3000
ou mais vinte pontos para ideias malucas.
05:46
I don't get that feedback in real life.
134
331000
2000
05:48
Now, the problem with collaborative online environments
135
333000
3000
O problema com ambientes de colaboração online
05:51
like World of Warcraft
136
336000
2000
como o World of Warcraft
05:53
is that it's so satisfying
137
338000
2000
é que é tão satisfatório
05:55
to be on the verge of an epic win all the time
138
340000
2000
estar sempre próximo de uma vitória épica,
05:57
that we decide to spend all our time in these game worlds.
139
342000
2000
05:59
It's just better than reality.
140
344000
2000
É simplesmente melhor que a realidade.
06:01
So, so far, collectively all the World of Warcraft gamers
141
346000
3000
Até agora, todos os jogadores de World of Warcraft
06:04
have spent 5.93 million years
142
349000
3000
gastaram, coletivamente, 5.93 milhões de anos
06:07
solving the virtual problems of Azeroth.
143
352000
4000
resolvendo os problemas virtuais de Azeroth.
06:11
Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
144
356000
2000
Isto não é, necessariamente, uma coisa ruim.
06:13
It might sound like it's a bad thing.
145
358000
2000
Isto pode soar como uma coisa ruim.
06:15
But to put that in context:
146
360000
2000
Mas para colocar isto em um contexto:
06:17
5.93 million years ago
147
362000
2000
5.93 milhões de anos atrás
06:19
was when our earliest primate human ancestors stood up.
148
364000
4000
06:23
That was the first upright primate.
149
368000
3000
Este foi o primeiro primata ereto.
06:26
Okay, so when we talk about how much time we're currently investing
150
371000
4000
06:30
in playing games, the only way it makes sense
151
375000
3000
06:33
to even think about it is to talk about time
152
378000
3000
06:36
at the magnitude of human evolution,
153
381000
2000
na importância da evolução humana,
06:38
which is an extraordinary thing.
154
383000
2000
o que é uma coisa extraordinária.
06:40
But it's also apt. Because it turns out
155
385000
2000
Mas isto é também apropriado. Pois isto mostra
06:42
that by spending all this time playing games,
156
387000
2000
que gastando todo esse tempo jogando,
06:44
we're actually changing what we
157
389000
2000
estamos na verdade mudando o que nós
06:46
are capable of as human beings.
158
391000
2000
somos capazes como seres humanos.
06:48
We are evolving to be a more collaborative and hearty species.
159
393000
3000
06:51
This is true. I believe this.
160
396000
2000
Isto é verdade. Eu acredito nisto.
06:53
So, consider this really interesting statistic;
161
398000
3000
Então considere esta interessante estatística.
06:56
it was recently published by a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University:
162
401000
3000
06:59
The average young person today
163
404000
2000
Um jovem de hoje
07:01
in a country with a strong gamer culture
164
406000
3000
07:04
will have spent 10,000 hours playing online games
165
409000
3000
terá gasto até os 21 anos,
07:07
by the age of 21.
166
412000
2000
10.000 horas jogando jogos online.
07:09
Now 10,000 hours is a really
167
414000
2000
10.000 horas é de fato
07:11
interesting number for two reasons.
168
416000
2000
um número interessante por duas razões.
07:13
First of all, for children in the United States
169
418000
4000
07:17
10,080 hours is the exact amount of time
170
422000
3000
10.080 horas é exatamente a quantidade de tempo
07:20
you will spend in school
171
425000
2000
que você gastará na escola
07:22
from fifth grade to high school graduation
172
427000
2000
da quinta série até a faculdade
07:24
if you have perfect attendance.
173
429000
2000
se você for um aluno assíduo.
07:26
So, we have an entire
174
431000
2000
Isto significa que temos todo um caminho
07:28
parallel track of education going on
175
433000
2000
educacional paralelo em andamento,
07:30
where young people are learning as much about
176
435000
2000
onde os jovens estão aprendendo tanto sobre
07:32
what it takes to be a good gamer
177
437000
2000
07:34
as they are learning about everything else in school.
178
439000
2000
quanto sobre todo o resto, na escola.
07:36
And some of you have probably read
179
441000
2000
07:38
Malcolm Gladwell's new book "Outliers."
180
443000
2000
livro de Malcolm Gladwell, Fora de Série -- Outliers.
07:40
So, you would have heard of his theory of success,
181
445000
2000
07:42
the 10,000 hour theory of success.
182
447000
2000
a teoria das 10.000 horas para o sucesso.
07:44
It's based on this great cognitive science research
183
449000
3000
Ela é baseada nesta grande pesquisa da ciência cognitiva
07:47
that if we can master 10,000 hours
184
452000
3000
que se pudéssemos nos esforçar durante 10.000 horas
07:50
of effortful study at anything
185
455000
2000
em duro estudo sobre qualquer coisa,
07:52
by the age of 21, we will be virtuosos at it.
186
457000
3000
quando chegássemos aos 21 anos, seríamos virtuosos naquilo.
07:55
We will be as good at whatever we do
187
460000
2000
07:57
as the greatest people in the world.
188
462000
2000
quanto as pessoas mais notáveis do mundo.
07:59
And so, now what we're looking at
189
464000
2000
E então, estamos vislumbrando agora
08:01
is an entire generation of young people
190
466000
2000
uma geração inteira de jovens
08:03
who are virtuoso gamers.
191
468000
3000
que são jogadores virtuosos.
08:06
So, the big question is,
192
471000
3000
A grande questão é,
08:09
"What exactly are gamers getting so good at?"
193
474000
3000
"Em que exatamente os jogadores estão se tornando tão bons?"
08:12
Because if we could figure that out,
194
477000
2000
Pois se conseguirmos imaginar isto
08:14
we would have a virtually unprecedented
195
479000
2000
teríamos uma quantidade sem precedentes de
08:16
human resource on our hands.
196
481000
2000
material humano em nossas mãos.
08:18
This is how many people we now have in the world
197
483000
3000
08:21
who spend at least an hour a day playing online games.
198
486000
2000
08:23
These are our virtuoso gamers,
199
488000
3000
Estes são os nossos jogadores virtuosos.
08:26
500 million people who are extraordinarily good at something.
200
491000
4000
08:30
And in the next decade
201
495000
2000
E na próxima década
08:32
we're going to have another billion gamers
202
497000
2000
teremos outro bilhão de jogadores
08:34
who are extraordinarily good at whatever that is.
203
499000
3000
08:37
If you don't know it already, this is coming.
204
502000
2000
08:39
The game industry is developing consoles
205
504000
2000
A indústria de jogos está desenvolvendo consoles
08:41
that are low energy and that work with the wireless phone networks
206
506000
3000
08:44
instead of broadband Internet
207
509000
2000
em vez de internet banda larga.
08:46
so that gamers all over the world,
208
511000
2000
Assim, jogadores de todo o mundo,
08:48
particularly in India, China, Brazil, can get online.
209
513000
4000
08:52
They expect one billion more gamers in the next decade.
210
517000
2000
08:54
It will bring us up to 1.5 billion gamers.
211
519000
3000
08:57
So, I've started to think about what these games
212
522000
2000
08:59
are making us virtuosos at.
213
524000
2000
estão nos tornando virtuosos.
09:01
Here are the four things I came up with. The first is urgent optimism.
214
526000
3000
Estas são as quatro coisas que consegui pensar. A primeira é o 'otimismo urgente'.
09:04
OK, think of this as extreme self-motivation.
215
529000
4000
Ok. Penso nisto como auto-motivação extrema.
09:08
Urgent optimism is the desire to act immediately
216
533000
2000
Otimismo urgente é o desejo de agir imediatamente™
09:10
to tackle an obstacle,
217
535000
2000
para superar um obstáculo,
09:12
combined with the belief
218
537000
2000
combinado com a crença
09:14
that we have a reasonable hope of success.
219
539000
3000
09:17
Gamers always believe that an epic win is possible,
220
542000
2000
09:19
and that it is always worth trying, and trying now.
221
544000
3000
e que sempre vale a pena tentar e tentar agora.
09:22
Gamers don't sit around.
222
547000
2000
Os jogadores nunca esperam sentados.
09:24
Gamers are virtuosos at weaving a tight social fabric.
223
549000
4000
09:28
There's a lot of interesting research that shows
224
553000
2000
Existe muita pesquisa que mostra
09:30
that we like people better after we play a game with them,
225
555000
2000
09:32
even if they've beaten us badly.
226
557000
2000
09:34
And the reason is, it takes a lot of trust
227
559000
2000
09:36
to play a game with someone.
228
561000
2000
jogar um jogo com alguém.
09:38
We trust that they will spend their time with us,
229
563000
2000
09:40
that they will play by the same rules,
230
565000
2000
que irão jogar com as mesmas regras,
09:42
value the same goal, they'll stay with the game until it's over.
231
567000
3000
09:45
And so, playing a game together actually builds up
232
570000
2000
E além disso, jogar algum jogo junto significa, na verdade, construir
09:47
bonds and trust and cooperation.
233
572000
3000
laços, confiança e cooperação.
09:50
And we actually build stronger social relationships as a result.
234
575000
4000
Na verdade, construímos relações sociais mais fortes.
09:54
Blissful productivity. I love it.
235
579000
2000
'Produtividade prazerosa'. Eu amo isto.
09:56
You know there's a reason why the average World of Warcraft gamer
236
581000
2000
Sabe, há uma razão para o porquê de usualmente um jogador de World of Warcraft
09:58
plays for 22 hours a week,
237
583000
2000
jogar 22 horas por semana,
10:00
kind of a half-time job.
238
585000
2000
algo como um trabalho de meio expediente.
10:02
It's because we know, when we're playing a game,
239
587000
2000
10:04
that we're actually happier
240
589000
2000
estamos mais felizes
10:06
working hard than we are relaxing, or hanging out.
241
591000
3000
10:09
We know that we are optimized, as human beings,
242
594000
2000
Sabemos que somos otimizados enquanto seres humanos
10:11
to do hard meaningful work.
243
596000
2000
fazendo um trabalho duro e de significado.
10:13
And gamers are willing to work hard
244
598000
2000
Jogadores são propensos a trabalhar duro
10:15
all the time, if they're given the right work.
245
600000
4000
10:19
Finally: epic meaning.
246
604000
2000
Finalmente, 'significado épico'.
10:21
Gamers love to be attached to awe-inspiring missions
247
606000
3000
Jogadores adoram ser desafiados por missões imponentes
10:24
to human planetary-scale stories.
248
609000
4000
10:28
So, just one bit of trivia that helps put that into perspective:
249
613000
5000
10:33
So, you all know Wikipedia, biggest wiki in the world.
250
618000
3000
Todos vocês conhecem a Wikipedia, a maior enciclopédia do mundo.
10:36
Second biggest wiki in the world, with nearly 80,000 articles,
251
621000
4000
A segunda maior enciclopédia do mundo, com quase 80.000 artigos
10:40
is the World of Warcraft wiki.
252
625000
2000
é a enciclopédia de World of Warcraft.
10:42
Five million people use it every month.
253
627000
2000
10:44
They have compiled more information about World of Warcraft
254
629000
2000
Eles compilaram mais informação sobre World of Warcraft
10:46
on the Internet than any other
255
631000
2000
na internet, do que qualquer outro
10:48
topic covered on any other wiki in the world.
256
633000
3000
tópico em qualquer outra enciclopédia do mundo.
10:51
They are building an epic story.
257
636000
2000
Eles estão construindo uma estória épica.
10:53
They are building an epic knowledge resource
258
638000
2000
10:55
about the World of Warcraft.
259
640000
2000
sobre World of Warcraft.
10:57
Okay, so these are four superpowers that add up to one thing:
260
642000
4000
11:01
Gamers are super-empowered, hopeful individuals.
261
646000
5000
Jogadores são indivíduos altamente esperançosos.
11:06
These are people who believe that they are individually capable
262
651000
3000
11:09
of changing the world.
263
654000
2000
de mudar o mundo.
11:11
And the only problem is that they believe
264
656000
2000
E o único problema é que eles acreditam
11:13
that they are capable of changing virtual worlds
265
658000
2000
que são capazes de mudar mundos virtuais
11:15
and not the real world.
266
660000
2000
e não o mundo real.
11:17
That's the problem that I'm trying to solve.
267
662000
2000
11:19
There's an economist named Edward Castronova.
268
664000
3000
Existe um economista chamado Edward Castronova.
11:22
His work is brilliant. He looks at why
269
667000
2000
Seu trabalho é brilhante. Ele observa porque
11:24
people are investing so much time and energy
270
669000
2000
as pessoas estão investindo tanto tempo, energia
11:26
and money in online worlds.
271
671000
2000
e dinheiro, em mundos virtuais.
11:28
And he says, "We're witnessing what amounts
272
673000
2000
E ele fala, "Estamos testemunhando quantidades
11:30
to no less than a mass exodus
273
675000
2000
11:32
to virtual worlds and online game environments."
274
677000
3000
11:35
And he's an economist. So, he's rational.
275
680000
2000
E ele é um economista. Logo, ele é racional.
11:37
And he says ... (Laughter)
276
682000
3000
E ele diz... (Risos)
11:40
Not like me -- I'm a game designer; I'm exuberant.
277
685000
2000
11:42
But he says
278
687000
2000
Mas ele diz,
11:44
that this makes perfect sense,
279
689000
3000
que isto faz perfeito sentido,
11:47
because gamers can achieve more in online worlds than they can in real life.
280
692000
3000
11:50
They can have stronger social relationships
281
695000
2000
Eles podem ter relações sociais
11:52
in games than they can have in real life;
282
697000
2000
11:54
they get better feedback and feel more rewarded
283
699000
3000
11:57
in games than they do in real life.
284
702000
2000
nos jogos, que na vida real.
11:59
So, he says for now it makes perfect sense
285
704000
2000
12:01
for gamers to spend more time in virtual worlds than the real world.
286
706000
3000
12:04
Now, I also agree that that is rational, for now.
287
709000
4000
12:08
But it is not, by any means, an optimal situation.
288
713000
3000
12:11
We have to start making the real world more like a game.
289
716000
3000
12:14
So, I take my inspiration from something that happened
290
719000
3000
Pego minha inspiração de algo que aconteceu
12:17
2,500 years ago.
291
722000
2000
2.500 anos atrás.
12:19
These are ancient dice, made out of sheep's knuckles. Right?
292
724000
4000
Estes são dados antigos, feitos de ossos. Certo?
12:23
Before we had awesome game controllers,
293
728000
2000
Antes de termos controles de video-games maravilhosos,
12:25
we had sheep's knuckles.
294
730000
2000
usávamos ossos.
12:27
And these represent the first game equipment
295
732000
2000
12:29
designed by human beings.
296
734000
3000
desenvolvido por seres humanos.
12:32
And if you're familiar with the work of the ancient Greek historian
297
737000
2000
12:34
Herodotus, you might know this history,
298
739000
2000
Heródoto, você provavelmente conhece esta história.
12:36
which is the history of
299
741000
2000
Que é a história de
12:38
who invented games and why.
300
743000
2000
quem inventou os jogos e porquê.
12:40
Herodotus says that games, particularly dice games,
301
745000
3000
12:43
were invented in the kingdom of Lydia
302
748000
3000
foram inventados no reino da Lídia
12:46
during a time of famine.
303
751000
2000
durante um tempo de fome.
12:48
Apparently, there was such a severe famine
304
753000
2000
Aparentemente havia uma fome severa,
12:50
that the king of Lydia decided that they had to do something crazy.
305
755000
4000
12:54
People were suffering. People were fighting.
306
759000
2000
As pessoas estavam sofrendo. As pessoas estavam brigando.
12:56
It was an extreme situation, they needed
307
761000
2000
Esta foi uma situação extrema. Eles precisavam
12:58
an extreme solution.
308
763000
2000
de uma solução extrema.
13:00
So, according to Herodotus, they invented dice games
309
765000
3000
13:03
and they set up a kingdom-wide policy:
310
768000
3000
e instituíram uma política de governo.
13:06
On one day, everybody would eat,
311
771000
2000
Em um dia, todos comeriam.
13:08
and on the next day, everybody would play games.
312
773000
3000
E no outro dia, todos jogariam.
13:11
And they would be so immersed in playing the dice games
313
776000
2000
E eles estariam tão imersos no jogo de dados,
13:13
because games are so engaging,
314
778000
2000
pois os jogos são sedutores,
13:15
and immerse us in such satisfying blissful productivity,
315
780000
3000
13:18
they would ignore the fact that they had no food to eat.
316
783000
3000
13:21
And then on the next day, they would play games;
317
786000
2000
No próximo dia eles jogariam.
13:23
and on the next day, they would eat.
318
788000
2000
E no dia posterior eles comeriam.
13:25
And according to Herodotus,
319
790000
2000
E de acordo com Heródoto,
13:27
they passed 18 years this way,
320
792000
2000
eles passaram 18 anos dessa maneira,
13:29
surviving through a famine
321
794000
2000
sobrevivendo através da escassez,
13:31
by eating on one day and playing games on the next.
322
796000
2000
13:33
Now, this is exactly, I think,
323
798000
2000
Ora, isso é exatamente, eu acho,
13:35
how we're using games today.
324
800000
2000
como estamos usando os jogos atualmente.
13:37
We're using games to escape real-world suffering.
325
802000
3000
13:40
We're using games to get away from everything that's broken
326
805000
3000
13:43
in the real environment, everything that's not satisfying about real life,
327
808000
3000
13:46
and we're getting what we need from games.
328
811000
3000
13:49
But it doesn't have to end there.
329
814000
2000
Mas isto não tem que acabar assim.
13:51
This is really exciting.
330
816000
2000
Isto é realmente excitante.
13:53
According to Herodotus, after 18 years
331
818000
3000
13:56
the famine wasn't getting better,
332
821000
2000
a fome não estava passando.
13:58
so the king decided they would play one final dice game.
333
823000
3000
14:01
They divided the entire kingdom in half.
334
826000
4000
Eles dividiram o reino inteiro pela metade.
14:05
They played one dice game,
335
830000
2000
Eles jogaram uma partida,
14:07
and the winners of that game got to go on an epic adventure.
336
832000
3000
14:10
They would leave Lydia,
337
835000
2000
Eles iriam sair da Lídia
14:12
and they would go out in search of a new place to live,
338
837000
3000
e procurariam uma nova maneira para viver,
14:15
leaving behind just enough people
339
840000
2000
deixando para trás a quantidade de pessoas
14:17
to survive on the resources that were available,
340
842000
2000
14:19
and hopefully to take their civilization
341
844000
2000
e esperançosamente levar a civilização
14:21
somewhere else where they could thrive.
342
846000
2000
14:23
Now, this sounds crazy, right?
343
848000
2000
Isto parece maluco, não é verdade?
14:25
But recently, DNA evidence
344
850000
2000
Mas recentemente, evidências de DNA
14:27
has shown that the Etruscans,
345
852000
2000
mostrou que os Etruscos,
14:29
who then led to the Roman Empire,
346
854000
2000
que fundaram o império Romano,
14:31
actually share the same DNA as the ancient Lydians.
347
856000
3000
14:34
And so, recently, scientists have suggested
348
859000
3000
Assim, recentemente alguns cientistas sugeriram
14:37
that Herodotus' crazy story is actually true.
349
862000
2000
14:39
And geologists have found evidence
350
864000
2000
Junto com isto, geólogos acharam evidência
14:41
of a global cooling that lasted
351
866000
2000
de um resfriamento global que durou
14:43
for nearly 20 years that could have explained the famine.
352
868000
3000
14:46
So, this crazy story might be true.
353
871000
2000
14:48
They might have actually
354
873000
2000
Eles podem ter, de verdade,
14:50
saved their culture by playing games,
355
875000
2000
salvado sua cultura através do jogo,
14:52
escaping to games for 18 years,
356
877000
2000
14:54
and then been so inspired,
357
879000
2000
e então se tornando tão inspirados,
14:56
and knew so much about how to come together with games,
358
881000
2000
14:58
that they actually saved the entire civilization that way.
359
883000
3000
15:01
Okay, we can do that.
360
886000
2000
Certo, nós podemos fazer isso.
15:03
We've been playing Warcraft since 1994.
361
888000
3000
Temos jogado Warcraft desde 1994.
15:06
That was the first real-time strategy game
362
891000
2000
15:08
from the World of Warcraft series. That was 16 years ago.
363
893000
2000
da série de World of Warcraft. Isto foi há 16 anos atrás.
15:10
They played dice games for 18 years,
364
895000
3000
Eles jogaram dados por 18 anos,
15:13
we've been playing Warcraft for 16 years.
365
898000
2000
nós jogamos Warcraft por 16 anos.
15:15
I say we are ready for our own epic game.
366
900000
3000
15:18
Now, they had half the civilization
367
903000
3000
Eles tinham metade da civilização
15:21
go off in search of a new world,
368
906000
2000
em busca de um novo mundo.
15:23
so that's where I get my 21 billion hours a week of game-play from.
369
908000
3000
15:26
Let's get half of us to agree
370
911000
3000
15:29
to spend an hour a day playing games,
371
914000
2000
em gastar uma hora por dia jogando,
15:31
until we solve real-world problems.
372
916000
2000
15:33
Now, I know you're asking, "How are we going to solve real world problems
373
918000
2000
15:35
in games?" Well, that's what I have devoted my work to
374
920000
3000
15:38
over the past few years,
375
923000
2000
durante os últimos anos
15:40
at The Institute For The Future.
376
925000
2000
no Instituto Para o Futuro.
15:42
We have this banner in our offices in Palo Alto,
377
927000
2000
15:44
and it expresses our view of how we should try to relate to the future.
378
929000
4000
15:48
We do not want to try to predict the future.
379
933000
2000
Nós não queremos tentar prever o futuro.
15:50
What we want to do is make the future.
380
935000
3000
O que queremos é fazer o futuro.
15:53
We want to imagine the best-case scenario outcome,
381
938000
2000
Nós queremos imaginar o melhor cenário possível
15:55
and then we want to empower people
382
940000
2000
e, assim, queremos dar força as pessoas
15:57
to make that outcome a reality.
383
942000
2000
para fazerem esse resultado uma realidade.
15:59
We want to imagine epic wins,
384
944000
2000
Nós queremos desenvolver vitórias épicas,
16:01
and then give people the means to achieve the epic win.
385
946000
3000
16:04
I'm just going to very briefly show you three games that I've made
386
949000
2000
Irei mostrar a vocês resumidamente três jogos que fiz
16:06
that are an attempt to give people the means
387
951000
3000
16:09
to create epic wins in their own futures.
388
954000
2000
16:11
So, this is World Without Oil.
389
956000
2000
Este é o World Without Oil (Mundo Sem Petróleo).
16:13
We made this game in 2007.
390
958000
2000
Fizemos este jogo em 2007.
16:15
This is an online game in which you try to survive
391
960000
2000
16:17
an oil shortage.
392
962000
2000
à uma falta de petróleo.
16:19
The oil shortage is fictional,
393
964000
2000
A falta de petróleo é fictícia,
16:21
but we put enough online content out there
394
966000
3000
mas colocamos conteúdo online suficiente
16:24
for you to believe that it's real, and to live your real life
395
969000
3000
16:27
as if we've run out of oil. So when you come to the game,
396
972000
3000
como se nós estivéssemos sem petróleo. Quando você entra no jogo
16:30
you sign up, you tell us where you live,
397
975000
2000
você nos diz onde vive
16:32
and then we give you real-time news, videos,
398
977000
2000
e, então, nós fornecemos novos vídeos em tempo real
16:34
data feeds that show you
399
979000
2000
que mostram a você
16:36
exactly how much oil costs,
400
981000
2000
exatamente quanto o petróleo custa,
16:38
what's not available, how food supply is being affected,
401
983000
2000
16:40
how transportation is being affected,
402
985000
2000
como o transporte está sendo afetado,
16:42
if schools are closed, if there is rioting,
403
987000
2000
16:44
and you have to figure out how you would live your real life
404
989000
3000
16:47
as if this were true. And then we ask you to blog about it,
405
992000
3000
16:50
to post videos, to post photos.
406
995000
2000
a postar vídeos, a postar fotos.
16:52
We piloted this game with 1,700 players in 2007,
407
997000
3000
Nós conduzimos este jogo com 1.700 jogadores em 2007.
16:55
and we've tracked them for the three years since.
408
1000000
3000
E nós temos guiado eles durante os três anos subseqüentes.
16:58
And I can tell you that this is a transformative experience.
409
1003000
2000
17:00
Nobody wants to change how they live
410
1005000
3000
Ninguém quer mudar a maneira que vive
17:03
just because it's good for the world, or because we're supposed to.
411
1008000
3000
17:06
But if you immerse them in an epic adventure
412
1011000
3000
17:09
and tell them, "We've run out of oil.
413
1014000
2000
e os diz, "Estamos sem petróleo".
17:11
This is an amazing story and adventure for you to go on.
414
1016000
3000
17:14
Challenge yourself to see how you would survive,"
415
1019000
3000
17:17
most of our players have kept up the habits
416
1022000
2000
17:19
that they learned in this game.
417
1024000
2000
que eles aprenderam neste jogo.
17:21
So, for the next world-saving game,
418
1026000
2000
Para o próximo jogo para salvar o mundo,
17:23
we decided to aim higher: bigger problem than just peak oil.
419
1028000
3000
17:26
We did a game called Superstruct
420
1031000
2000
Fizemos um jogo chamado Superstruct
17:28
at The Institute For The Future.
421
1033000
2000
no Instituto Para O Futuro.
17:30
And the premise was a supercomputer has calculated
422
1035000
3000
17:33
that humans have only 23 years left on the planet.
423
1038000
3000
17:36
This supercomputer was called the Global Extinction
424
1041000
2000
17:38
Awareness System, of course.
425
1043000
2000
da Extinção Global, claro.
17:40
We asked people to come online
426
1045000
2000
Pedimos às pessoas para ficarem online
17:42
almost like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.
427
1047000
2000
quase como num filme de Jerry Bruckheimer.
17:44
You know Jerry Bruckheimer movies, you form a dream team --
428
1049000
3000
17:47
you've got the astronaut, the scientist, the ex-convict,
429
1052000
3000
Você tem o astronauta, o cientista, o ex condenado,
17:50
and they all have something to do to save the world.
430
1055000
2000
17:52
(Laughter)
431
1057000
1000
(Risos)
17:53
But in our game, instead of just having five people
432
1058000
2000
17:55
on the dream team, we said, "Everybody's on the dream team,
433
1060000
3000
no time dos sonhos, dizemos que todo mundo está no time dos sonhos,
17:58
and it's your job to invent the future of energy,
434
1063000
3000
18:01
the future of food, the future of health,
435
1066000
2000
o futuro da comida, o futuro da saúde,
18:03
the future of security and the future of the social safety net."
436
1068000
3000
18:06
We had 8,000 people play that game for eight weeks.
437
1071000
2000
Nós tivemos 8.000 pessoas jogando durante oito semanas.
18:08
They came up with 500 insanely creative solutions
438
1073000
4000
Eles criaram mais de 500 soluções criativas insanas
18:12
that you can go online, if you Google "Superstruct," and see.
439
1077000
2000
18:14
So, finally, the last game,
440
1079000
2000
Então, finalmente, o último jogo,
18:16
we're launching it March 3rd. This is a game done with the World Bank Institute.
441
1081000
4000
18:20
If you complete the game you will be certified
442
1085000
2000
Se você terminar o jogo, você será certificado
18:22
by the World Bank Institute,
443
1087000
2000
pelo Instituto do Banco Mundial,
18:24
as a Social Innovator, class of 2010.
444
1089000
2000
como um Inovador Social de 2010.
18:26
Working with universities all over sub-Saharan Africa,
