ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paul Nicklen - Polar photographer
Paul Nicklen photographs the creatures of the Arctic and Antarctic, generating global awareness about wildlife in these isolated and endangered environments.

Why you should listen

Paul Nicklen grew up one of only a few non-Inuit in an Inuit settlement on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada -- a childhood that taught him the patience, stamina and respect for nature required for his beat in the frigid climes of Earth’s polar regions. Best known for his vivid and intimate wildlife photos for National Geographic, Nicklen started out a biologist in the Northwest Territories, gathering data on such species as lynx, grizzlies, and polar bears. Today he bridges the gap between scientific research and the public, showing how fragile and fast-changing habitats are profoundly affecting wildlife.

During the course of his workday Nicklen regularly comes face-to-face with fantastic creatures: narwhals, Arctic foxes, elephant seals, and more. His most amazing experience? An underwater encounter with a leopard seal who for four days tried to feed him penguins through the "mouth" of his lens.

Şi, în mod tragic, în 2004,
11:19
a scientistom de stiinta was takenluate down and drowneds-au înecat,
242
664000
3000
o cercetătoare a fost apucată şi înecată,
11:22
and she was beingfiind consumedconsumate by a leopardLeopard sealsigiliu, focă.
243
667000
2000
11:24
And people were like, "We knewștiut they were viciousvicios. We knewștiut they were."
244
669000
3000
11:27
And so people love to formformă theiral lor opinionsopinii.
245
672000
2000
Aşa le place oamenilor să îşi formeze opinii proprii.
11:29
And that's when I got a storypoveste ideaidee:
246
674000
2000
11:31
I want to go to AntarcticaAntarctica,
247
676000
2000
vreau să merg în Antarctica,
11:33
get in the waterapă with as manymulți leopardLeopard sealssigilii as I possiblyeventual can
248
678000
2000
11:35
and give them a fairechitabil shakescutura --
249
680000
2000
şi să le dau o şansă corectă --
11:37
find out if they really are these viciousvicios animalsanimale, or if they're misunderstoodînţeles greşit.
250
682000
3000
11:40
So this is that storypoveste.
251
685000
2000
Aceasta e povestea de care spuneam.
11:42
Oh, and they alsode asemenea happenîntâmpla to eatmânca happyfericit feetpicioare.
252
687000
3000
11:45
(LaughterRâs)
253
690000
3000
(Râsete)
11:48
As a speciesspecie, as humansoameni, we like to say penguinspinguini are really cutedrăguţ,
254
693000
3000
11:51
thereforeprin urmare, leopardLeopard sealssigilii eatmânca them, so leopardLeopard sealssigilii are uglyurât and badrău.
255
696000
3000
11:54
It doesn't work that way.
256
699000
2000
Lucrurile nu funcţionează aşa.
11:56
The penguinpinguin doesn't know it's cutedrăguţ,
257
701000
2000
Pinguinul nu ştie că e drăgălaş.
11:58
and the leopardLeopard sealsigiliu, focă doesn't know it's kinddrăguț of bigmare and monstrousmonstruos.
258
703000
2000
12:00
This is just the foodalimente chainlanţ unfoldingdesfășurare.
259
705000
3000
12:03
They're alsode asemenea bigmare.
260
708000
2000
Sunt şi foarte mari.
12:05
They're not these little harborport sealssigilii.
261
710000
2000
Nu sunt mici, ca focile obişnuite.
12:07
They are 12 ftft. long, a thousandmie poundslire sterline.
262
712000
2000
Au 3,5m lungime, 450 de kilograme.
12:09
And they're alsode asemenea curiouslycu interes aggressiveagresiv.
263
714000
3000
Sunt şi curioase într-un mod agresiv.
12:12
You get 12 touriststuristi packedbătătorit into a ZodiacZodia,

268
727000
2000
12:24
All the leopardLeopard sealsigiliu, focă was doing --
269
729000
2000
Tot ce făcea foca leopard --
12:26
it's just bitingmusca a balloonbalon.
270
731000
2000
pur şi simplu muşca un balon.
12:28
It just seesvede this bigmare balloonbalon in the oceanocean -- it doesn't have handsmâini --
271
733000
2000
12:30
it's going to take a little bitemușca, the boatbarcă popsapare, and off they go.
272
735000
3000
12:33
(LaughterRâs)
273
738000

12:35
So after fivecinci dayszi of crossingtrecere the DrakeDrake PassagePasaj --

12:38

275
743000
3000
Nu-i aşa că e o imagine fumoasă?
12:41
After fivecinci dayszi of crossingtrecere the DrakeDrake PassagePasaj,
276
746000
3000
12:44
we have finallyin sfarsit arriveda sosit at AntarcticaAntarctica.
277
749000
2000
ajungem în sfârşi în Antarctica.
12:46
I'm with my SwedishSuedeză assistantasistent and guideghid.
278
751000
2000
Sunt cu asistentul şi ghidul meu suedez.
12:48
His nameNume is GoranGoran EhlmeEhlme from SwedenSuedia -- GoranGoran.
279
753000
4000
Numele lui e Goran Ehlme din Suedia -- Goran.
12:52
And he has a lot of experienceexperienţă with leopardLeopard sealssigilii. I have never seenvăzut one.
280
757000
3000
Are foarte multă experienţă cu focile leopard. Eu nu văzusem niciodată una.
12:55
So we come around the coveCove in our little ZodiacZodia boatbarcă,
281
760000
3000
Venim în jurul golfuleţului în mica noastră barcă pneumatică,
12:58
and there's this monstrousmonstruos leopardLeopard sealsigiliu, focă.
282
763000
2000
şi vedem această monstruoasă focă leopard.
13:00
And even in his voicevoce, he goesmerge, "That's a bloodysângeros bigmare sealsigiliu, focă, ya."
283
765000
2000
13:02
(LaughterRâs)
284
767000
2000
(Râsete)
13:04
And this sealsigiliu, focă is takingluare this penguinpinguin by the headcap,
285
769000
3000
13:07
and it's flippingflipping it back and forthmai departe.
286
772000
2000
şi îl vântură încolo şi încoace.
13:09
And what it's tryingîncercat to do is turnviraj that penguinpinguin inside-outîn interiorul-out,
287
774000
2000
13:11
so it can eatmânca the meatcarne off the bonesoase,
288
776000
3000
13:14
and then it goesmerge off and getsdevine anothero alta one.
289
779000
2000
şi apoi pleacă şi ia altul.
13:16
And so this leopardLeopard sealsigiliu, focă grabbedapucat anothero alta penguinpinguin,
290
781000
2000
13:18
camea venit undersub the boatbarcă, the ZodiacZodia,
291
783000
2000
a venit sub barca noastră,
13:20
startingpornire hittinglovind the hullCoca of the boatbarcă.
292
785000
2000
13:22
And we're tryingîncercat to not fallcădea in the waterapă.
293
787000
2000
13:24
And we sitsta down, and that's when GoranGoran said to me,
294
789000
3000
13:27
"This is a good sealsigiliu, focă, ya.
295
792000
2000
"Asta e o focă bună, da.
13:29
It's time for you to get in the waterapă."
296
794000
2000
E timpul să intri în apă."
13:31
(LaughterRâs)
297
796000
3000
(Râsete)
13:34
And I lookedprivit at GoranGoran, and I said to him, "ForgetUitaţi that."
298
799000
3000
13:37
But I think I probablyprobabil used a differentdiferit wordcuvânt startingpornire with the letterscrisoare F.
299
802000
4000
Dar cred că probabil am folosit o altă expresie.
13:41
But he was right.
300
806000
2000
Dar avea dreptate.
13:43
He scoldedcertat me out, and said, "This is why we're here.
301
808000
2000
M-a certat, şi mi-a spus: "De-asta suntem aici.
13:45
And you purposedpropusese this stupidprost storypoveste to NationalNaţionale GeographicGeografice.
302
810000
2000
13:47
And now you've got to deliverlivra.
303
812000
2000
Iar acum trebuie să îl faci.
13:49
And you can't publishpublica excusesscuze."
304
814000
2000
Şi nu poţi să publici scuze."
13:51
So I had suchastfel de dryuscat mouthgură --
305
816000
2000
Mi se uscase gura foarte tare --
13:53
probablyprobabil not as badrău as now --
306
818000
2000
probabil nu aşa de tare ca acum --
13:55
but I had suchastfel de, suchastfel de dryuscat mouthgură.
307
820000
4000
dar se uscase tare tare de tot.
13:59
And my legspicioare were just tremblingtremurând. I couldn'tnu a putut feel my legspicioare.
308
824000
3000
Şi picioarele îmi tremurau. Nu îmi puteam simţi picioarele.
14:02
I put my flippersinotatoare on. I could barelyde abia partparte my lipsbuze.
309
827000
2000
Mi-am pus labele. De-abia îmi puteam despărţi buzele.
14:04
I put my snorkelsnorkel in my mouthgură,
310
829000
2000
Mi-am pus tubul de respirat în gură,
14:06
and I rolledlaminate over the sidelatură of the ZodiacZodia into the waterapă.
311
831000
3000
14:09
And this was the first thing she did.
312
834000
2000
14:11
She camea venit racingcurse up to me, engulfedînghițit my wholeîntreg cameraaparat foto --
313
836000
3000
14:14
and her teethdantură are up here and down here --
314
839000
3000
14:17
but GoranGoran, before I had gottenajuns in the waterapă, had givendat me amazinguimitor advicesfat.
315
842000
3000
14:20
He said, "If you get scaredînspăimântat, you closeînchide your eyesochi, ya, and she'llcoajă go away."
316
845000
4000
14:24
(LaughterRâs)
317
849000
3000
(Râsete)
14:27
So that's all I had to work with at that pointpunct.
318
852000
2000
14:29
But I just starteda început to shoottrage these picturespoze.
319
854000
2000
14:31
So she did this threatamenințare displayafişa for a fewpuțini minutesminute,
320
856000
2000
A avut aceste manifestări de ameninţare câteva minute,
14:33
and then the mostcel mai amazinguimitor thing happeneds-a întâmplat -- she totallyintru totul relaxedrelaxat.
321
858000
3000
14:36
She wenta mers off, she got a penguinpinguin.
322
861000
2000
A plecat, a luat un pinguin.
14:38
She stoppedoprit about 10 feetpicioare away from me,
323
863000
2000
S-a oprit la vreo 3 metri de mine,
14:40
and she satSAT there with this penguinpinguin, the penguin'spinguin flappingaripi, and she let's it go.
324
865000
3000
14:43
The penguinpinguin swimsînoată towardspre me, takes off.
325
868000
3000
Pinguinul înoată spre mine, apoi fuge.
14:46
She grabsApucă anothero alta one. She does this over and over.
326
871000
2000
Ea apucă alt pinguin. Şi tot face asta de câteva ori.
14:48
And it dawnedAm dat seama on me that she's tryingîncercat to feeda hrani me a penguinpinguin.
327
873000
2000
14:50
Why elsealtfel would she releaseeliberare these penguinspinguini at me?
328
875000
4000
14:54
And after she did this fourpatru or fivecinci timesori,
329
879000
3000
14:57
she swaminotat by me with this dejecteddemoralizat look on her facefață.
330
882000
3000
15:00
You don't want to be too anthropomorphicStatuetă antropomorfă, but I swearjura that she lookedprivit at me
331
885000
3000
15:03
like, "This uselessinutil predator'sPredator going to starvemor de foame in my oceanocean."
332
888000
2000
15:05
(LaughterRâs)
333
890000
5000
(Râsete)
15:10
So realizingrealizarea I couldn'tnu a putut catchcaptură swimmingînot penguinspinguini,
334
895000
2000
15:12
she'dea ar get these other penguinspinguini and bringaduce them slowlyîncet towardscătre me,
335
897000
2000
15:14
bobbingbobbing like this, and she'dea ar let them go.
336
899000
2000
... aşa, şi apoi le dădea drumul.
15:16
This didn't work.
337
901000
2000
Nici asta n-a funcţionat.
15:18
I was laughingrazand so hardgreu and so emotionalemoţional
338
903000
2000
Râdeam şi mă emoţionasem aşa de tare
15:20
that my maskmasca was floodinginundare, because I was cryingplâns underwatersub apă,
339
905000
2000
15:22
just because it was so amazinguimitor.
340
907000
2000
15:24
And so that didn't work.
341
909000
2000
Deci nici asta nu a mers.
15:26
So then she'dea ar get anothero alta penguinpinguin and try this ballet-likebalet-ca sexysexy displayafişa
342
911000
2000
15:28
slidingalunecare down this icebergaisberg like this. (LaughterRâs)
343
913000
3000
alunecând uşor pe acest iceberg aşa.
15:31
And she would sortfel of bringaduce them over to me and offeroferi it to me.
344
916000
2000
Şi apoi mi-i cam aducea şi mi-i oferea.
15:33
This wenta mers on for fourpatru dayszi.
345
918000
2000
A tot făcut aşa timp de patru zile.
15:35
This just didn't happenîntâmpla a couplecuplu of timesori.
346
920000
2000
Nu s-a întâmplat doar de câteva ori.
15:37
And then so she realizedrealizat I couldn'tnu a putut catchcaptură livetrăi onescele,
347
922000
2000
Apoi şi-a dat seamă că nu pot prinde pinguini vii,
15:39
so she broughtadus me deadmort penguinspinguini.
348
924000
2000
aşa că mi-a adus pinguini morţi.
15:41
(LaughterRâs)
349
926000
3000
(Râsete)
15:44
Now I've got fourpatru or fivecinci penguinspinguini floatingplutitor around my headcap,
350
929000
4000
15:48
and I'm just sittingședință there shootingfilmare away.
351
933000
3000
şi eu pur şi simplu stăteam acolo făcând poze.
15:52
And she would oftende multe ori stop and have this dejecteddemoralizat look on her facefață
352
937000
2000
15:54
like, "Are you for realreal?"
353
939000
2000
"Tu chiar eşti serios?"
15:56
Because she can't believe I can't eatmânca this penguinpinguin.
354
941000
2000
15:58
Because in her worldlume, you're eitherfie breedingreproducere or you're eatingmâncare --
355
943000
2000
16:00
and I'm not breedingreproducere, so ...
356
945000
2000
iar eu nu mă reproduceam.
16:02
(LaughterRâs)
357
947000
2000
(Râsete)
16:04
And then that wasn'tnu a fost enoughdestul; she starteda început to flipflip- penguinspinguini ontope my headcap.
358
949000
3000
16:07
She was tryingîncercat to force-feedForce-feed me. She's pushingîmpingerea me around.
359
952000
2000
Încerca să mă hrănească cu forţa. Mă tot împinge de colo-colo.
16:09
She's tryingîncercat to force-feedForce-feed my cameraaparat foto,
360
954000
2000
Încearcă să îmi hrănească aparatul cu forţa,
16:11
whichcare is everyfiecare photographer'slui fotograf dreamvis.
361
956000
3000
ceea ce e visul oricărui fotograf.
16:14
And she would get frustratedfrustrat; she'dea ar blowa sufla bubblesbule in my facefață.
362
959000
3000
16:17
She would, I think, let me know that I was going to starvemor de foame.
363
962000
2000
