ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tali Sharot - Cognitive neuroscientist
Tali Sharot studies why our brains are biased toward optimism.

Why you should listen

Optimism bias is the belief that the future will be better, much better, than the past or present. And most of us display this bias. Neuroscientist Tali Sharot wants to know why: What is it about our brains that makes us overestimate the positive? She explores the question in her book The Optimism Bias: A Tour of the Irrationally Positive Brain

In the book (and a 2011 TIME magazine cover story), she reviewed findings from both social science and neuroscience that point to an interesting conclusion: "our brains aren't just stamped by the past. They are constantly being shaped by the future." In her own work, she's interested in how our natural optimism actually shapes what we remember, and her interesting range of papers encompasses behavioral research (how likely we are to misremember major events) as well as medical findings -- like searching for the places in the brain where optimism lives. Sharot is a faculty member of the Department of Cognitive, Perceptual and Brain Sciences at University College London.

But the questionîntrebare that was really confusingconfuz to me was,

524489
3011
Dar problema care mă deconcerta era
09:03
how do we maintainmenţine optimismoptimism in the facefață of realityrealitate?

cum să ne menţinem optimismul în fața realității?
09:08
As an neuroscientistneurolog, this was especiallyin mod deosebit confusingconfuz,
184
532169

Ca cercetător în neuroştiinţă, asta era deosebit de derutant,
09:11
because accordingin conformitate to all the theoriesteorii out there,
185
535187

pentru că după toate teoriile existente,
09:13
when your expectationsaşteptările are not metîntâlnit, you should altermodifica them.

09:18
But this is not what we find.
187
542271

Dar nu asta am găsit.
09:19
We askedîntrebă people to come into our lablaborator

Am rugat oamenii să vină la laborator
09:23
in orderOrdin to try and figurefigura out what was going on.
189
547306

să încercăm să ne dăm seama ce se întâmpla.
09:26
We askedîntrebă them to estimateestima theiral lor likelihoodprobabilitate
190

I-am rugat să îşi estimeze probabilitatea
09:28

191

09:31
So, for exampleexemplu, what is your likelihoodprobabilitate of sufferingsuferinţă from cancercancer?
192
555167
4375
De exemplu, care e probabilitatea să suferiţi de cancer?
09:35
And then we told them the averagein medie likelihoodprobabilitate
193
559542
2352
Apoi le-am spus care era probabilitatea medie
09:37
of someonecineva like them to suffersuferi these misfortunesnenorocirile.
194
561894
2981
ca cineva ca ei să sufere de aceste nenorociri.
09:40
So cancercancer, for exampleexemplu, is about 30 percentla sută.
195
564875
3565
Cancerul, spre exemplu, e aprox. 30%.
09:44
And then we askedîntrebă them again,
196
568440
2935
I-am întrebat din nou,
09:47
"How likelyprobabil are you to suffersuferi from cancercancer?"
197
571375
2875
"Cât de probabil este să suferiţi de cancer?"
09:50
What we wanted to know was
198
574250
2248
Doream să ştim
09:52
whetherdacă people will take the informationinformație that we gavea dat them
199
576498

200
579167
2131
ca să-şi schimbe convingerile.
09:57
And indeedintr-adevar they did --
201
581298
2369
Şi, într-adevăr şi le-au schimbat -
09:59
but mostlyMai ales when the informationinformație we gavea dat them
202
583667
2581
dar mai ales când informaţiile pe care le-am oferit
10:02
was better than what they expectedașteptat.
203
586248
2831
erau mai bune decât se aşteptau.
10:04
So for exampleexemplu,
204
589079
1361
Spre exemplu,
10:06
if someonecineva said, "My likelihoodprobabilitate of sufferingsuferinţă from cancercancer
205

dacă cineva spunea: "Probabilitatea ca eu să sufăr de cancer
10:09
is about 50 percentla sută,"
206

e cam 50%",
10:11
and we said, "Hey, good newsștiri.
207
595731
2521
iar noi le spuneam: "Hei, veşti bune.
10:14
The averagein medie likelihoodprobabilitate is only 30 percentla sută,"
208
598252
2581
Media este 30%",
10:16
the nextUrmător → time around they would say,
209
600833
2046
data următoare spuneau,
10:18
"Well maybe my likelihoodprobabilitate is about 35 percentla sută."
210
602879
2715
"Poate că probabilitatea mea e 35%."
10:21
So they learnedînvățat quicklyrepede and efficientlyeficient.
211
605594
2636
Aşa că au învăţat repede şi eficient.
10:24
But if someonecineva starteda început off sayingzicală,
212
608230
2550
Dar dacă cineva spunea inițial:
10:26
"My averagein medie likelihoodprobabilitate of sufferingsuferinţă from cancercancer is about 10 percentla sută,"
213
610780
3403
"Probabilitatea mea de a suferi de cancer e cam 10%",
10:30
and we said, "Hey, badrău newsștiri.
214
614183
2692
iar noi spuneam: "Hei, veşti rele:
10:32
The averagein medie likelihoodprobabilitate is about 30 percentla sută,"
215
616875
3073
probabilitatea medie e aprox. 30%",
10:35
the nextUrmător → time around they would say,
216
619948
2058
data următoare ei spuneau,
10:37
"YepDa. Still think it's about 11 percentla sută."
217
622006
3119
"Mda, cred totuşi că a mea este 11%".
10:41
(LaughterRâs)
218
625125
1690
(Râsete)
10:42
So it's not that they didn't learnînvăța at all -- they did --
219
626815
3319
Nu înseamnă că n-au învăţat deloc - au învăţat -
10:46

11:01
But they didn't think that those numbersnumerele were relatedlegate de to them.
