ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Roger Stein - Financial management expert
Roger Stein wants to bring financial engineering to the world of drug funding.

Why you should listen

Roger Stein is a senior lecturer in finance at MIT's Sloan School of Management and a research affiliate at the MIT Laboratory for Financial Engineering. He is also the former chief analytics officer at State Street Global Exchange. He has been working in risk modeling and financial prediction for almost 25 years; his products and services are used widely in industry and have become benchmarks in banking and finance. With MIT colleagues, he is currently collaborating on a new model that uses modern risk management methods and financial engineering techniques to change the way new drug research is funded.

Previously he was managing director of research and academic relations globally for Moody’s Corporation, and prior to that was president of Moody’s Research Labs. He has a Ph.D. from New York University, has coauthored two full-length texts on applied analytics, and has written more than 50 academic articles and papers. He has also been practicing Aikido since 1980.

Roger Stein: A bold new way to fund drug research

(Filmat la TED@State Street.)

131
295404
2726
să lucreze ca active financiare.
05:10
Let's createcrea a giantgigant fundfond.
132
298130
1684
Hai să creăm un capital uriaş.
05:11
In financefinanţa, we know what to do
133
299814
1495
În finanțe, ştim ce să facem
05:13
with assetsbunuri that are riskyriscant.
134
301309
1326
cu activele riscante.
05:14
You put them in a portfolioportofoliu
135
302635
1473
Le punem într-un portofoliu
05:16
and you try to smoothneted out the returnsse intoarce.
136
304108
1680
şi încercăm să îndulcim câştigul.
05:17
So we did some mathmatematica, and it turnedîntoarse out
137
305788
1351
Am făcut calcule şi se pare
05:19
you could make this work,
but in orderOrdin to make it work,
138
307139
2807
că ar merge, dar ca să meargă
05:21
you need about 80 to 150 drugsdroguri.
139
309946
2569
e nevoie de 80 - 150 de medicamente.
05:24
Now the good newsștiri is, there's plentymulțime of drugsdroguri
140
312515
1590
Vestea bună e că există o mulţime de medicamente
05:26
that are waitingaşteptare to be testedtestat.
141
314105
1281
care aşteaptă să fie testate.
05:27
We'veNe-am been told that there's a backlogrestante
142
315386
2337
Ni s-a spus că există o acumulare
05:29
of about 20 yearsani of drugsdroguri
143
317723
2289
de 20 de ani de medicamente
05:32
that are waitingaşteptare to be testedtestat but can't be fundedfinanțat.
144
320012
2655
care aşteaptă să fie testate
și nu găsesc finanţare.
05:34
In factfapt, that earlydin timp stageetapă of the fundingfinanțarea processproces,
145
322667
2106
05:36
that PhaseFaza I and pre-clinicalpre-clinice stuffchestie,
146
324773
2236
acea Fază I şi excluderea pre-clinică,
05:39
that's actuallyde fapt, in the industryindustrie,
calleddenumit the ValleyValea of DeathMoartea
147
327009
2332
în industria farmacologică e numită Valea Morţii
05:41
because it's where drugsdroguri go to diea muri.
148
329359
1675
05:43
It's very hardgreu to for them to get throughprin there,
149
331034
1577
05:44
and of coursecurs, if you can't get throughprin there,
you can't get to the latermai tarziu stagesetape.
150
332611
4203
şi, bineînţeles, dacă nu treci de prima
nu poţi ajunge următoarele.
05:48
So we did this mathmatematica, and we figuredimaginat out, okay,
151
336814
1596
Am făcut calculele şi ne-am dat seama că
05:50
well, you know, you need about 80 to, say, 150,
152
338410
2599
05:53
or something like that, drugsdroguri.
153
341009
1877
sau ceva de genul ăsta.
05:54
And then we did a little more mathmatematica, and we said,
154
342886
1875
05:56
okay, well that's a fundfond of about
155
344761
1610
bine, asta reprezintă un fond de aproximativ
05:58
threeTrei to 15 billionmiliard dollarsdolari.
156
346371
3314
3 până la 15 miliarde de dolari.
06:01
So we kinddrăguț of createdcreată a newnou problemproblemă
157
349685
2356
Şi astfel am creat o nouă problemă,
06:04
by solvingrezolvarea the oldvechi one.
158
352041
1331
încercând să o rezolvăm pe cea veche.
06:05
We were ablecapabil to get ridscăpa of the riskrisc,
but now we need a lot of capitalcapital,
159
353372
2615
06:07
and there's only one placeloc to get that kinddrăguț of capitalcapital,
160
355987
1938
06:09
the capitalcapital marketspiețe.
161
357925
1164
piaţa de capital.
06:11
VentureAventuraţi-vă capitalistscapitaliști don't have it.
PhilanthropiesPhilanthropies don't have it.
162
359089
2814
Investitorii nu îl au.
Donatorii nu îl au.
06:13
But we have to figurefigura out how we can
get people in the capitalcapital marketspiețe,
163
361903
2004
Dar să vedem cum îi putem determina
pe cei din pieţele de capital,
06:15
who traditionallytradiţional don't investinvesti in this stuffchestie,
164
363907
1543
06:17
to want to investinvesti in this stuffchestie.
165
365450

să îşi dorească să investească.
06:19
So again, financialfinanciar engineeringInginerie was helpfulutil here.
166
367057

Aşa că, din nou, ingineria financiară
mi-a venit în ajutor.
06:22

We had to get people motivatedmotivaţi,
