ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Michael Dickinson - Biologist
Most people are irritated by the buzzing of a fly's wings. But biologist Michael Dickinson views the sound with a deep sense of wonder.

Why you should listen

Some things are so commonplace that they barely register our attention. Michael Dickinson has dedicated much of his research to one such thing -- the flight of the fly. Dickinson aims to understand how a fly's nervous system allows it to accomplish such incredible aerodynamic feats. Affectionately dubbed the "Fly Guy" by The Scientist, Dickinson's research brings together zoology, neuroscience and fluid mechanics.

Dickinson was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2001. He is now a professor of biology at the University of Washington, where he heads The Dickinson Lab. The lab conducts research into insect flight control, animal brain recordings, animal/robot interactions and animal visual navigation and welcomes students with an interest in studying insect flight, behavior and evolution from an interdisciplinary approach perspective.

Now, flight飞行 -- what does it take to fly?
40
120433
2842
02:19
Well, in order订购 to fly, just as in a human人的 aircraft飞机,
41
123275
2864
02:22
you need wings翅膀 that can generate生成 sufficient足够 aerodynamic空气动力学的 forces军队,
42
126139
2735
02:24
you need an engine发动机 sufficient足够 to generate生成 the power功率 required需要 for flight飞行,
43
128874
3546
02:28
and you need a controller调节器,
44
132420
1709
02:30
and in the first human人的 aircraft飞机, the controller调节器 was basically基本上
45
134129
2626
02:32
the brain of Orville奥维 and Wilbur威尔伯 sitting坐在 in the cockpit座舱.
46

02:36
Now, how does this compare比较 to a fly?
47
141067
2753
02:39
Well, I spent花费 a lot of my early career事业 trying to figure数字 out
48
143820
3251
02:42
how insect昆虫 wings翅膀 generate生成 enough足够 force to keep the flies苍蝇 in the air空气.
49
147071
4336
02:47
And you might威力 have heard听说 how engineers工程师 proved证实
50
151407
1610
02:48
that bumblebees大黄蜂 couldn't不能 fly.
51
153017
2634
02:51
Well, the problem问题 was in thinking思维 that the insect昆虫 wings翅膀
52
155651
2620
02:54
function功能 in the way that aircraft飞机 wings翅膀 work. But they don't.
53
158271
3119
02:57
And we tackle滑车 this problem问题 by building建造 giant巨人,
54
161390
2854
03:03
that would flap拍打 in giant巨人 pools of mineral矿物 oil
56
167676
3336
03:06
where we could study研究 the aerodynamic空气动力学的 forces军队.
57
171012
2274
03:09
And it turns out that the insects昆虫 flap拍打 their wings翅膀
58
173286
2158
03:11
in a very clever聪明 way, at a very high angle角度 of attack攻击
59
175444
2592
03:13
that creates创建 a structure结构体 at the leading领导 edge边缘 of the wing翅膀,
60
178036
3121
03:17
a little tornado-like龙卷风 structure结构体 called a leading领导 edge边缘 vortex涡流,
61
181157
3199
03:20
and it's that vortex涡流 that actually其实 enables使 the wings翅膀
62
184356
2954
03:23
to make enough足够 force for the animal动物 to stay in the air空气.
63
187310
3359
03:26
But the thing that's actually其实 most -- so, what's fascinating迷人
64
190669
2428
03:28
is not so much that the wing翅膀 has some interesting有趣 morphology形态学.
65
193097
2975
03:31
What's clever聪明 is the way the fly flaps襟翼 it,
66
196072
3645
03:35
which哪一个 of course课程 ultimately最终 is controlled受控 by the nervous紧张 system系统,
67
199717
3136
03:38
and this is what enables使 flies苍蝇 to perform演出
68
202853
2647
03:41
these remarkable卓越 aerial天线 maneuvers演习.
69
205500
2807
03:44
Now, what about the engine
70
208307
2097
03:46
The engine发动机 of the fly is absolutely绝对 fascinating迷人.
71
210404
2492
03:48
They have two types类型 of flight飞行 muscle肌肉:
72
212896
1898
03:50
so-called所谓 power功率 muscle肌肉, which哪一个 is stretch-activated牵张激活,
73
214794
2985
03:53
which哪一个 means手段 that it activates激活 itself本身 and does not need to be controlled受控
74
217779
3726
03:57
on a contraction-by-contraction收缩的收缩 basis基础 by the nervous紧张 system系统.
75
221505
3339
04:00
It's specialized专门 to generate生成 the enormous巨大 power功率 required需要 for flight飞行,
76
224844
4609
04:05
and it fills填充 the middle中间 portion一部分 of the fly,
77
229453
2079
04:07
so when a fly hits点击 your windshield挡风玻璃,
78
231532
1547
04:08
it's basically基本上 the power功率 muscle肌肉 that you're looking at.
79
233079
2406
04:11
But attached to the base基础 of the wing翅膀
80
235485
2146
04:13
is a set of little, tiny control控制 muscles肌肉
81
237631
2638
04:16
that are not very powerful强大 at all, but they're very fast快速,
82
240269
3301
04:19
and they're able能够 to reconfigure重新配置 the hinge合页 of the wing翅膀
83
243570
3206
04:22
on a stroke-by-stroke行程通过行程 basis基础,
84
246776
1762
04:24
and this is what enables使 the fly to change更改 its wing翅膀
85
248538
3142
04:27
and generate生成 the changes变化 in aerodynamic空气动力学的 forces军队
86
251680
2971
04:30
which哪一个 change更改 its flight飞行 trajectory弹道.
87
254651
2573
04:33
And of course课程, the role角色 of the nervous紧张 system系统 is to control控制 all this.
88
257224
3563
04:36
So let's look at the controller
89

because they're a simple简单 model模型 of brain function功能.
112
323985
3247
05:43
And the basic基本 punchline妙处 of my talk is,
113
327232
2077
05:45
I'd like to turn that over on its head.
114
329309
2658
05:47
I don't think they're a simple简单 model模型 of anything.
115

05:55
(Laughter

05:57
And let's explore探索 this notion概念 of simplicity简单.
119
342069
3003
06:00
So I think, unfortunately不幸, a lot of neuroscientists神经学家,
120
345072
2431
06:03
we're all somewhat有些 narcissistic自恋.
121
347503
1832
06:05
When we think of brain, we of course课程 imagine想像 our own拥有 brain.
122
349335
3433
06:08
But remember记得 that this kind of brain,
123
352768
1960
06:10
which哪一个 is much, much smaller
124
354728
1768
06:12
instead代替 of 100 billion十亿 neurons神经元, it has 100,000 neurons神经元
125
356496
2678
06:15
but this is the most common共同 form形成 of brain on the planet行星
126
359174
2882
06:17
and has been for 400 million百万 years年份.
127
362056
2904
06:20
And is it fair公平 to say that it's simple简单?
128
364960
2288
06:23
Well, it's simple简单 in the sense that it has fewer neurons神经元,
129
367248
2095
06:25
but is that a fair公平 metric?
130
369343
1754
06:26
And I would propose提出 it's not a fair公平 metric.
131
371097
2276
06:29
So let's sort分类 of think about this. I think we have to compare比较 --
132
373373
3100
06:32
(Laughter
133
376473
1559
06:33
we have to compare比较 the size尺寸 of the brain
134
378032
5121
06:39
with what the brain can do.
135
383153
2030
06:41
So I propose提出 we have a Trump王牌 number,
136
385183
2881
06:43
and the Trump王牌 number is the ratio of this man's男人的
137
388064
2865
Trump
06:46
behavioral行为的 repertoire剧目 to the number of neurons神经元 in his brain.
138
390929
3679
06:50
We'll calculate计算 the Trump王牌 number for the fruit水果 fly.
139
394608
2668
06:53
Now, how many许多 people here think the Trump王牌 number
140
397276
2684
06:55
is higher更高 for the fruit水果 fly?
141
399960
2489
06:58
(Applause
142
402449
2431
07:00
It's a very smart聪明, smart聪明 audience听众.
143
404880
3428
07:04
Yes, the inequality不等式 goes in this direction方向, or I would posit断定 it.
144
408308
3327
07:07
Now I realize实现 that it is a little bit absurd荒诞
145
411635
2382
07:09
to compare比较 the behavioral行为的 repertoire剧目 of a human人的 to a fly.
146
414017
3558
07:13
But let's take another另一个 animal动物 just as an example. Here's这里的 a mouse老鼠.
147
417575
4143
07:17
A mouse老鼠 has about 1,000 times as many许多 neurons神经元 as a fly.
148
421718
4305
07:21
I used to study研究 mice老鼠. When I studied研究 mice老鼠,
149
426023
2027
07:23
I used to talk really slowly
150
428050
2837
07:26
And then something happened发生 when I started开始 to work on flies苍蝇.
151
430887
2576
07:29
(Laughter
152
433463
2412
07:31
And I think if you compare比较 the natural自然 history历史 of flies苍蝇 and mice老鼠,
153
435875
3460
07:35
it's really comparable可比. They have to forage饲料 for food餐饮.
154
439335
3313
07:38
They have to engage从事 in courtship求爱.
155
442648
2447
07:40
They have sex性别. They hide隐藏 from predators大鳄.
156
445095
3471
07:44
They do a lot of the similar类似 things.
157
448566
1980
07:46
But I would argue争论 that flies苍蝇 do more.
158
450546
1718
07:48
So for example, I'm going to show显示 you a sequence序列,
159
452264
3378
07:51
and I have to say, some of my funding资金 comes from the military军事,
160
455642
4205
07:55
so I'm showing展示 this classified分类 sequence序列
161
459847
2072
07:57
and you cannot不能 discuss讨论 it outside of this room房间. Okay?
162
461919
4093
08:01
So I want you to look at the payload
08:03
at the tail尾巴 of the fruit水果 fly.
164
467920
3026
08:06
Watch it very closely密切,
165
470946
2101
08:08
and you'll你会 see why my six-year-old六十岁 son儿子
166
473047
4297
08:13
now wants to be a neuroscientist神经学家.
167
477344
4729
08:17
Wait for it.
168
482073
1179
等待下
08:19
PshhewPshhew.
169
483252
1569
08:20
So at least最小 you'll你会 admit承认 that if fruit水果 flies苍蝇 are not as clever聪明 as mice老鼠,
170
484821
3084
08:23
they're at least最小 as clever聪明 as pigeons鸽子. (Laughter笑声)
171
487905
4916
08:28
Now, I want to get across横过 that it's not just a matter of numbers数字
172
492821
3967
08:32
but also the challenge挑战 for a fly to compute计算
173
496788
2598
08:35
everything its brain has to compute计算 with such这样 tiny neurons神经元.
174
499386
2849
08:38
So this is a beautiful美丽 image图片 of a visual视觉 interneuron中间神经元 from a mouse老鼠
175
502235
2988
08:41
that came来了 from Jeff杰夫 Lichtman's里奇曼的 lab实验室,
176
505223
2768
08:43
and you can see the wonderful精彩 images图片 of brains大脑
177
507991
3247
08:47
that he showed显示 in his talk.
178
511238
3193
08:50
But up in the corner, in the right corner, you'll你会 see,
179
514431
2368
08:52
at the same相同 scale规模, a visual视觉 interneuron中间神经元 from a fly.
180
516799
4112
08:56
And I'll expand扩大 this up.
181
520911
1841
08:58
And it's a beautifully精美 complex复杂 neuron神经元.
182
522752
2170
09:00
It's just very, very tiny, and there's lots of biophysical生物物理 challenges挑战
183
524922
3485
09:04
with trying to compute计算 information信息 with tiny, tiny neurons神经元.
184
528407
3623
09:07
How small can neurons神经元 get? Well, look at this interesting有趣 insect昆虫.
185
532030
3537
09:11
It looks容貌 sort分类 of like a fly. It has wings翅膀, it has eyes眼睛,
186
535567
2212
09:13
it has antennae天线, its legs, complicated复杂 life history历史,
187
537779
2799
09:16
it's a parasite寄生物, it has to fly around and find caterpillars毛毛虫
188
540578
3096
09:19
to parasatizeparasatize,
189
543674
1382
09:20
but not only is its brain the size尺寸 of a salt grain粮食,
190
545056
4115
09:25
which哪一个 is comparable可比 for a fruit水果 fly,
191
549171
1969
09:27
it is the size尺寸 of a salt grain粮食.
192
551140
2926
09:29
So here's这里的 some other organisms生物 at the similar类似 scale规模.
193
554066
3635
09:33
This animal动物 is the size尺寸 of a paramecium草履虫 and an amoeba阿米巴,
194
557701
4130
09:37
and it has a brain of 7,000 neurons神经元 that's so small --
195
561831
3880
09:41
you know these things called cell细胞 bodies身体 you've been hearing听力 about,
196
565711
2456
09:44
where the nucleus of the neuron神经元 is?
197
568167
1651
09:45
This animal动物 gets得到 rid摆脱 of them because they take up too much space空间.
198
569818
3460
09:49
So this is a session会议 on frontiers前沿 in neuroscience神经科学.
199
573278
2473
09:51
I would posit断定 that one frontier边境 in neuroscience神经科学 is to figure数字 out how the brain of that thing works作品.
200
575751
5360
09:57
But let's think about this. How can you make a small number of neurons神经元 do a lot?
201
581111
5633
10:02
And I think, from an engineering工程 perspective透视,
202
586744
2522
10:05
you think of multiplexing.
203
589266
1729
10:06
You can take a hardware硬件 and have that hardware硬件
204
590995
2703
10:09
do different不同 things at different不同 times,
205
593698
1613
10:11
or have different不同 parts部分 of the hardware硬件 doing different不同 things.
206
595311
2995
10:14
And these are the two concepts概念 I'd like to explore探索.
207
598306
3271
10:17
And they're not concepts概念 that I've come up with,
208
601577
1658
10:19
but concepts概念 that have been proposed建议 by others其他 in the past过去.
209
603235
4545
10:23
And one idea理念 comes from lessons教训 from chewing咀嚼 crabs螃蟹.
210
607780
3075
10:26
And I don't mean chewing咀嚼 the crabs螃蟹.
211
610855
1867
10:28
I grew成长 up in Baltimore巴尔的摩, and I chew crabs螃蟹 very, very well.
212
612722
3599
10:32
But I'm talking about the crabs螃蟹 actually其实 doing the chewing咀嚼.
213
616321
2857
10:35
Crab螃蟹 chewing咀嚼 is actually其实 really fascinating迷人.
214
619178
2030
10:37
Crabs螃蟹 have this complicated复杂 structure结构体 under their carapace甲壳
215
621208
3259
10:40
called the gastric胃的 mill
216
624467
1310
10:41
that grinds研磨物 their food餐饮 in a variety品种 of different不同 ways方法.
217
625777
2430
10:44
And here's这里的 an endoscopic内镜 movie电影 of this structure结构体.
218
628207
5259
10:49
The amazing惊人 thing about this is that it's controlled受控
219
633466
2560
10:51
by a really tiny set of neurons神经元, about two dozen neurons神经元
220
636026
3432
10:55
that can produce生产 a vast广大 variety品种 of different不同 motor发动机 patterns模式,
221
639458
4963
11:00
and the reason原因 it can do this is that this little tiny ganglion神经节
222
644421
4347
11:04
in the crab螃蟹 is actually其实 inundated淹没 by many许多, many许多 neuromodulators神经调质.
223
648768
4184
11:08
You heard听说 about neuromodulators神经调质 earlier.
224
652952
2141
11:10
There are more neuromodulators
11:13
that alter改变, that innervate鼓起勇气 this structure结构体 than actually其实 neurons神经元 in the structure结构体,
226
657318
5485
11:18
and they're able能够 to generate生成 a complicated复杂 set of patterns模式.
227
662803
4242
11:22
And this is the work by Eve前夕 Marder黄鼠狼 and her many许多 colleagues同事
228
667045
3441
11:26
who've谁一直 been studying研究 this fascinating迷人 system系统
229
670486
2295
11:28
that show显示 how a smaller cluster of neurons神经元
230
672781
2152
11:30
can do many许多, many许多, many许多 things
231
674933
1825
11:32
because of neuromodulation神经调节 that can take place地点 on a moment-by-moment每时每刻的情绪,时刻 basis基础.
232
676758
4856
11:37
So this is basically基本上 multiplexing in time.
233
681614
2439
11:39
Imagine想像 a network网络 of neurons神经元 with one neuromodulator神经调节.
234
684053
2785
11:42
You select选择 one set of cells细胞 to perform演出 one sort分类 of behavior行为,
235
686838
3478
11:46
another另一个 neuromodulator神经调节, another另一个 set of cells细胞,
236
690316
2618
11:48
a different不同 pattern模式, and you can imagine想像
237
692934
1713
11:50
you could extrapolate推断 to a very, very complicated复杂 system系统.
238
694647
3878
11:54
Is there any evidence证据 that flies苍蝇 do this?
239
698525
2094
11:56
Well, for many许多 years年份 in my laboratory实验室 and other laboratories实验室 around the world世界,
240
700619
3375
11:59
we've我们已经 been studying研究 fly behaviors行为 in little flight飞行 simulators模拟器.
241
703994
2648
12:02
You can tether系链 a fly to a little stick.
242
706642
1706
12:04
You can measure测量 the aerodynamic空气动力学的 forces军队 it's creating创建.
243
708348
2501
12:06
You can let the fly play a little video视频 game游戏
244
710849
2546
12:09
by letting出租 it fly around in a visual视觉 display显示.
245
713395
3878
12:13
So let me show显示 you a little tiny sequence序列 of this.
246
717273
2337
12:15
Here's这里的 a fly
247
719610
1227
12:16
and a large infrared红外线 view视图 of the fly in the flight飞行 simulator模拟器,
248
720837
3437
12:20
and this is a game游戏 the flies苍蝇 love to play.
249
724274
1955
12:22
You allow允许 them to steer驾驶 towards the little stripe条纹,
250
726229
2437
12:24
and they'll他们会 just steer驾驶 towards that stripe条纹 forever永远.
251
728666
2825
12:27
It's part部分 of their visual视觉 guidance指导 system系统.
252
731491
3558
12:30
But very, very recently最近, it's been possible可能
253
735049
2345
12:33
to modify修改 these sorts排序 of behavioral行为的 arenas竞技场 for physiologies生理机能.
254
737394
4940
12:38
So this is the preparation制备 that one of my former前任的 post-docs博士后,
255
742334
2488
12:40
Gaby加比 Maimon迈蒙, who's谁是 now at Rockefeller洛克菲勒, developed发达,
256
744822
2443
12:43
and it's basically基本上 a flight飞行 simulator模拟器
257
747265
1686
12:44
but under conditions条件 where you actually其实 can stick an electrode电极
258
748951
3075
12:47
in the brain of the fly and record记录
259
752026
2264
12:50
from a genetically基因 identified确定 neuron神经元 in the fly's飞的 brain.
260
754290
3656
12:53
And this is what one of these experiments实验 looks容貌 like.
261
757946
2298
12:56
It was a sequence序列 taken采取 from another另一个 post-doc博士后 in the lab实验室,
262
760244
2971
263
763215
1199
叫Bettina Schenell
13:00
The green绿色 trace跟踪 at the bottom底部 is the membrane potential潜在
264
764414
3392
13:03
of a neuron神经元 in the fly's飞的 brain,
265
767806
2030
13:05
and you'll你会 see the fly start开始 to fly, and the fly is actually其实
266
769836
2942
13:08
controlling控制 the rotation回转 of that visual视觉 pattern模式 itself本身
267
772778
3279
13:11
by its own拥有 wing翅膀 motion运动,
268
776057
1479
13:13
and you can see this visual视觉 interneuron中间神经元
269
777536
2110
13:15
respond响应 to the pattern模式 of wing翅膀 motion运动 as the fly flies苍蝇.
270
779646
3908
13:19
So for the first time we've我们已经 actually其实 been able能够 to record记录
271
783554
2376
13:21
from neurons神经元 in the fly's飞的 brain while the fly
272
785930
2908
13:24
is performing执行 sophisticated复杂的 behaviors行为 such这样 as flight飞行.
273
788838
4468
13:29
And one of the lessons教训 we've我们已经 been learning学习
274
793306
1855
13:31
is that the physiology生理 of cells细胞 that we've我们已经 been studying研究
275
795161
2420
13:33
for many许多 years年份 in quiescent flies苍蝇
276
797581
2421
13:35
is not the same相同 as the physiology生理 of those cells细胞
277
800002
2648
13:38
when the flies苍蝇 actually其实 engage从事 in active活性 behaviors行为
278
802650
2736
13:41
like flying飞行 and walking步行 and so forth向前.
279
805386
2539
13:43
And why is the physiology生理 different不同?
280
807925
2925
13:46
Well it turns out it's these neuromodulators
13:48
just like the neuromodulators神经调质 in that little tiny ganglion神经节 in the crabs螃蟹.
282
812907
3951
13:52
So here's这里的 a picture图片 of the octopamine章鱼胺 system系统.
283
816858
2550
13:55
Octopamine章鱼胺 is a neuromodulator神经调节
284
819408
1754
13:57
that seems似乎 to play an important重要 role角色 in flight飞行 and other behaviors行为.
285
821162
4336
14:01
But this is just one of many许多 neuromodulators神经调质
286
825498
2472
14:03
that's in the fly's飞的 brain.
287
827970
1071
14:04
So I really think that, as we learn学习 more,
288
829041
2666
14:07
it's going to turn out that the whole整个 fly brain
289
831707
2527
14:10
is just like a large version of this stomatogastricstomatogastric ganglion神经节,
290
834234
3089
14:13
and that's one of the reasons原因 why it can do so much with so few少数 neurons神经元.
291
837323
4360
14:17
Now, another另一个 idea理念, another另一个 way of multiplexing
292
841683
2787
14:20
is multiplexing in space空间,
293
844470
1656
14:22
having different不同 parts部分 of a neuron神经元
294
846126
1694
14:23
do different不同 things at the same相同 time.
295
847820
2122
14:25
So here's这里的 two sort分类 of canonical典范 neurons神经元
296
849942
1833
14:27
from a vertebrate脊椎动物 and an invertebrate无脊椎动物,
297
851775
2285
14:29
a human人的 pyramidal金字塔 neuron神经元 from Ramon拉蒙 y Cajal卡哈尔,
298
854060
3250
Ramon Y Cajal(拉孟伊卡哈)的一个人类锥体神经元
14:33
and another另一个 cell细胞 to the right, a non-spiking非扣球 interneuron中间神经元,
299
857310
4003
14:37
and this is the work of Alan艾伦 Watson沃森 and Malcolm马尔科姆 Burrows伯罗斯 many许多 years年份 ago,
300
861313
4147
14:41
and Malcolm马尔科姆 Burrows伯罗斯 came来了 up with a pretty漂亮 interesting有趣 idea理念
301
865460
3075
Malcolm Burrows
14:44
based基于 on the fact事实 that this neuron神经元 from a locust刺槐
302
868535
2882
14:47
does not fire action行动 potentials潜力.
303
871417
1959
14:49
It's a non-spiking非扣球 cell细胞.
304
873376
1748
14:51
So a typical典型 cell细胞, like the neurons神经元 in our brain,
305
875124
2780
14:53
has a region地区 called the dendrites树突 that receives收到 input输入,
306
877904
2752
14:56
and that input输入 sums总和 together一起
307
880656
2589
14:59
and will produce生产 action行动 potentials潜力
308
883245
2296
15:01
that run down the axon轴突 and then activate启用
309
885541
2331
15:03
all the output产量 regions地区 of the neuron神经元.
310
887872
2296
15:06
But non-spiking非扣球 neurons神经元 are actually其实 quite相当 complicated复杂
311
890168
2876
15:08
because they can have input输入 synapses突触 and output产量 synapses突触
312
893044
3112
15:12
all interdigitated叉指式, and there's no single action行动 potential潜在
313
896156
3663
15:15
that drives驱动器 all the outputs输出 at the same相同 time.
314
899819
3126
15:18
So there's a possibility可能性 that you have computational计算 compartments车厢
315
902945
3907
15:22
that allow允许 the different不同 parts部分 of the neuron神经元
316
906852
3978
15:26
to do different不同 things at the same相同 time.
317
910830
2560
15:29
So these basic基本 concepts概念 of multitasking多任务处理 in time
318
913390
4671
15:33
and multitasking多任务处理 in space空间,
319
918061
2361
15:36
I think these are things that are true真正 in our brains大脑 as well,
320
920422
2832
15:39
but I think the insects昆虫 are the true真正 masters主人 of this.
321
923254
2577
15:41
So I hope希望 you think of insects昆虫 a little bit differently不同 next下一个 time,
322
925831
3116
15:44
and as I say up here, please think before you swat扑打.
323
928947
2935
15:47
(Applause
