ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rob Legato - Visual Effects Guru
Rob Legato creates surprising and creative visual illusions for movies.

Why you should listen

Did we really see what we thought we saw? Rob Legato creates visual illusions for movies -- thinking deeply both about vfx's expanding tech power and the truly new creative processes that can result. Legato won his first Oscar in 1998 for his work on James Cameron's Titanic, after several years in television supervising effects on two Star Trek series. His 2012 Oscar win for Hugo, the 3D film about a boy who lives alone in a Paris train station, underscores his fascinating partnership with Martin Scorsese -- doing digital effects on documentaries and new classics like The Departed.

He's worked with the big effects houses like Sony Imageworks and Digital Domain, but is now fascinated with the nimble new workflows made possible with digital tools. He designed the "virtual cinematography pipeline" that let James Cameron shoot Avatar like a feature film, not a software project. We know that fx can create new worlds -- but how can these tools unlock new creativity?

2028
00:18
and when I worked工作 on this film電影, I discovered發現 something
1
2641
1880
00:20
about how our brains大腦 work, and how our brains大腦 work
2
4521
2463
00:22
is that, when we're sort分類 of infused輸注 with
3
6984
2279
00:25
either enthusiasm熱情 or awe威嚴 or fondness癖好 or whatever隨你,
4
9263
4246
00:29
it changes變化 and alters變造 our perception知覺 of things.
5
13509
2408
00:31
It changes變化 what we see. It changes變化 what we remember記得.
6
15917
2177
00:33
And as an experiment實驗, because I dauntingly嚇人 create創建
7
18094
3508
00:37
a task任務 for myself of recreating再創造 a Saturn土星 V launch發射
8
21602
3920
00:41
for this particular特定 movie電影, because I put it out there,
9
25522
3422
00:44
I felt a little nervous緊張 about it, so I need to do an experiment實驗
10
28944
2057
00:46
and bring帶來 a group of people like this in a projection投影 room房間
11
31001
3608
00:50
and play this stock股票 footage鏡頭, and when I played發揮 this
12
34609
2680
00:53
stock股票 footage鏡頭, I simply只是 wanted to find out
13
37289
2801
00:55
what people remembered記得, what was memorable難忘 about it?
14
40090
3415
00:59
What should I actually其實 try to replicate複製?
15
43505
2003
01:01
What should I try to emulate仿真 to some degree?
16
45508
3771
01:05
So this is the footage鏡頭 that I was showing展示 everybody每個人.
17
49279
3089
01:08
And what I discovered發現 is, because of the nature性質
18
52368
2682
01:10
of the footage鏡頭 and the fact事實 that we're doing this film電影,
19
55050
2198
01:13
there was an emotion情感 that was built內置 into it
20
57248
1953
01:15
and our collective集體 memories回憶 of what this launch發射 meant意味著 to us
21
59201
3078
01:18
and all these various各個 things.
22
62279
1674
01:19
When I showed顯示 it, and I asked, immediately立即 after
23
63953
2032
01:21
the screening篩查 was over, what they thought of it,
24
65985
2791
01:24
what was your memorable難忘 shots鏡頭, they changed them.
25
68776
2466
01:27
They were -- had camera相機 moves移動 on them.
26
71242
2378
01:29
They had all kinds of things. Shots射擊 were combined結合,
27
73620
2676
01:32
and I was just really curious好奇, I mean, what the hell地獄
28
76296
2982
01:35
were you looking at just a few少數 minutes分鐘 ago
29
79278
1367
01:36
and how come, how'd你怎麼 you come up with this sort分類 of description描述?
30
80645
3844
01:40
And what I discovered發現 is, what I should do is not actually其實
31
84489
3848
01:44
replicate複製 what they saw, is replicate複製 what they remembered記得.
32
88337
3690
01:47
So this is our footage鏡頭 of the launch發射, based基於 on, basically基本上,
33
92027
3982
01:51
taking服用 notes筆記, asking people what they thought, and then
34
96009
2708
01:54
the combination組合 of all the different不同 shots鏡頭 and all
35
98717
2442
01:57
the different不同 things put together一起 created創建 their sort分類 of
36
101159
1928
01:58
collective集體 consciousness意識 of what they remembered記得
37
103087
2039
02:01
it looked看著 like, but not what it really looked看著 like.
38
105126
1650
02:02
So this is what we created創建 for "Apollo阿波羅 13."
39
106776
2998
02:10
So literally按照字面 what you're seeing眼看 now is the confluence合流
41
114241
2766
02:12
of a bunch of different不同 people, a bunch of different不同 memories回憶,
42
117007
2061
02:14
including包含 my own擁有, of taking服用 a little bit of liberty自由
43
119068
3298
02:18
with the subject學科 matter.
44
122366
1724
02:19
I basically基本上 shot射擊 everything with short lenses鏡頭,
45
124090
2637
02:22
which哪一個 means手段 that you're very close to the action行動,
46
126727
1917
02:24
but framed陷害 it very similarly同樣 to the long lens鏡片 shots鏡頭
47
128644
2290
02:26
which哪一個 gives you a sense of distance距離, so I was basically基本上
48
130934
2640
02:29
was setting設置 up something that would remind提醒 you
49
133574
1984
02:31
of something you haven't沒有 really quite相當 seen看到 before. (Music音樂)
50
135558
3472
02:34
And then I'm going to show顯示 you exactly究竟 what it is
51
139030
2531
02:37
that you were reacting反應 to when you were reacting反應 to it.
52
141561
3601
02:41
(Music
53
145162
12895
02:53
Tom湯姆 Hanks漢克斯: Hello你好, Houston休斯頓, this is Odyssey奧德賽.
54
158072
2115
02:56
It's good to see you again.
02:58
Rob Legato連奏: I pretend假裝 they're clapping拍手 for me.
56
162978
2440
Rob Legato:
03:01
(Laughter
57
165418
2158
03:03
So now I'm in a parking停車處 lot. Basically基本上 it's a tin can,
58
167576
3405
03:06
and I'm basically基本上 recreating再創造 the launch發射 with
59
170981
1825
03:08
fire extinguishers滅火器, fire, I have wax that I threw
60
172806
4339
03:13
in front面前 of the lens鏡片 to look like ice, and so basically基本上
61
177145
3345
03:16
if you believed相信 any of the stuff東東 that I just showed顯示 you,
62
180490
2817
03:19
what you were reacting反應 to, what you're emoting作表情 to,
63
183307
3181
03:22
is something that's a total falsehood謬誤, and I found發現 that
64
186488
2435
03:24
really kind of fascinating迷人.
65
188923
1394
03:26
And in this particular特定 case案件, this is the climax高潮 of the movie電影,
66
190317
2976
03:29
and, you know, the weight重量 of achieving實現 it was simply只是
67
193293
3209
03:32
take a model模型, throw it out of a helicopter直升機, and shoot射擊 it.
68
196502
3570
03:35
And that's simply只是 what I did.
69
200072
2003
03:37
That's me shooting射擊, and I'm a fairly相當 mediocre平庸 operator操作者,
70
202075
2477
03:40
so I got that nice不錯 sense of verisimilitude逼真, of a kind of,
71
204552
3539
03:43
you know, following以下 the rocket火箭 all the way down,
72
208091
2832
03:46
and giving that little sort分類 of edge邊緣, I was desperately拼命
73
210923
1679
03:48
trying to keep it in frame. So then I come up to the next下一個 thing.
74
212602
3500
03:52
We had a NASANASA consultant顧問 who was actually其實 an astronaut宇航員,
75
216102
2597
03:54
who was actually其實 on some of the missions任務, of Apollo阿波羅 15,
76
218699
3005
03:57
and he was there to basically基本上 double check my science科學.
77
221704
3519
04:01
And, I guess猜測 somebody thought they needed需要 to do that.
78
225223
3521
04:04
(Laughter
79
228744
1732
04:06
I don't know why, but they thought they did.
80
230476
2588
04:08
So we were, he's a hero英雄, he's an astronaut宇航員, and
81
233064
4142
04:13
we're all sort分類 of excited興奮, and, you know, I gave myself
82
237206
2806
04:15
the liberty自由 of saying, you know, some of the shots鏡頭 I did
83
240012
2471
04:18
didn't really suck吮吸 that bad.
84
242483
2409
04:20
And so maybe, you know, we were feeling感覺 kind of a little
85
244892
3260
04:24
good about it, so I brought him in here, and he needed需要
86
248152
2457
04:26
to really check and see what we were doing,
87
250609
2537
04:29
and basically基本上 give us our A plus report報告 card,
88
253146
2986
04:32
and so I showed顯示 him some shots鏡頭 we were working加工 on,
89
256132
1965
04:33
and waiting等候 for the reaction反應 that you hope希望 for,
90
258097
3110
04:37
which哪一個 is what I got.
04:40
So I showed顯示 him these two shots鏡頭,
92
264296
2039
04:42
and then he basically基本上 told me what he thought.
93
266335
3417
04:45
("That's wrong錯誤") (Laughter笑聲)
94
269752
2537
04:48
Okay. (Laughter
95
272289
2959
04:51
It's what you dream夢想 about.
96
275248
1924
04:53
(Laughter
97
277172
3000
04:56
So what I got from him is, he turned轉身 to me and said,
98
280172
3507
04:59
"You would never, ever design設計 a rocket火箭 like that.
99
283679
3454
05:03
You would never have a rocket火箭 go up
100
287133
1249
05:04
while the gantry龍門 arms武器 are going out. Can you imagine想像
101
288382
2061
05:06
the tragedy悲劇 that could possibly或者 happen發生 with that?
102
290443
2055
05:08
You would never, ever design設計 a rocket火箭 like that."
103
292498
2842
05:11
And he was looking at me. It's like, Yeah, I don't know
104
295340
2147
05:13
if you noticed注意到, but I'm the guy out in the parking停車處 lot
105
297487
2010
05:15
recreating再創造 one of America's美國 finest最好的 moments瞬間 with
106
299497
1928
05:18
(Laughter
108
303084
2359
05:21
And I'm not going to argue爭論 with you. You're an astronaut宇航員,
109
305443
2928
05:24
a hero英雄, and I'm from New Jersey新澤西, so --
110
308371
2277
05:26
(Laughter
111
310648
1699
05:28
I'm just going to show顯示 you some footage鏡頭.
112
312347
2037
05:30
I'm just going to show顯示 you some footage鏡頭, and tell me what you think.
113
314384
2610
05:32
And then I did kind of get the reaction反應 I was hoping希望 for.
114
316994
2423
05:35
So I showed顯示 him this, and this is actual實際 footage鏡頭
115
319417
2039
05:37
that he was on. This is Apollo阿波羅 15. This was his mission任務.
116
321456
3545
05:40
So I showed顯示 him this, and the reaction反應 I got was interesting有趣.
117
325001
5276
05:46
("That's wrong錯誤 too.") (Laughter笑聲)
118
330277
2784
05:48
So, and what happened發生 was, I mean, what I sort分類 of intunedintuned
119
333061
3234
05:52
in that is that he remembered記得 it differently不同.
120
336295
2482
05:54
He remembered記得 that was a perfectly完美 safe安全 sort分類 of gantry龍門
121
338777
2344
05:57
system系統, perfectly完美 safe安全 rocket火箭 launch發射, because he's sitting坐在
122
341121
2703
05:59
in a rocket火箭 that has, like, a hundred thousand pounds英鎊
123
343824
2223
06:01
of thrust推力, built內置 by the lowest最低 bidder投標人.
124
346047
2274
06:04
He was hoping希望 it was going to work out okay.
125
348321
2255
06:09
So he twisted扭曲 his memory記憶 around.
127
353345
2144
06:11
Now, Ron羅恩 Howard霍華德 ran into Buzz蜂鳴器 Aldrin奧爾德林, who was not
128
355489
3074
後來朗霍華(導演)碰到 Buzz Aldrin(前太空人)
06:14
on the movie電影, so he had no idea理念 that we were faking偽造

06:16
any of this footage鏡頭, and he just responded回應

2226
06:19
as he would respond響應, and I'll run this.
131
363104

06:21
Ron羅恩 Howard霍華德: Buzz蜂鳴器 Aldrin奧爾德林 came來了 up to me
132
365934

06:24
and said, "Hey, that launch發射 footage鏡頭, I saw some shots鏡頭
133
368368
4438
06:28
I'd never seen看到 before. Did you guys, what vault拱頂 did you find
134
372806
4998
06:33
that stuff東東 in?" And I said, "Well, no vault拱頂, Buzz蜂鳴器,
135
377804
2461
06:36
we generated產生 all that from scratch."
136
380265
3418
06:39
And he said, "Huh, that's pretty漂亮 good. Can we use it?"
137
383683
3904
06:46
RLRL: I think he's a great American美國.
139
391043
1927
06:48
(Laughter
140
392970
3781
06:52
So, "Titanic泰坦尼克號" was, if you don't know the story故事,
141
396751
3303
06:55
doesn't end結束 well.
142
400054
1740
06:57
(Laughter
143
401794
2781
07:00
07:03
So he basically基本上 set up, or basically基本上 shattered破滅
145
407726
2281
07:05
the suspension懸掛 of disbelief懷疑, because what he photographed拍照
146
410007
2403
07:08
was the real真實 thing, a Mir米爾 sub going down, or actually其實
147
412410
3427
07:11
two Mir米爾 subs潛艇 going down to the real真實 wreck破壞,
148
415837
2343
07:14
and he created創建 this very haunting令人難以忘懷 footage鏡頭.
149
418180
2037
07:16
It's really beautiful美麗, and it conjures浮現 up all these
150
420217
2873
07:18
various各個 different不同 emotions情緒, but he couldn't不能 photograph照片
151
423090
2194
07:21
everything, and to tell the story故事,
152
425284
2729
07:23
I had to fill in the gaps空白, which哪一個 is now rather daunting艱鉅,
153
428013
1850
07:25
because now I have to recreate重建 back to back
154
429863
2561
07:28
what really happened發生 and I had, I'm the only one
155
432424
3055
07:31
who could really blow打擊 it at that point.
156
435479
4275
07:35
So this is the footage鏡頭 he photographed拍照,
157
439754
2040
07:37
and it was pretty漂亮 moving移動 and pretty漂亮 awe-inspiring凜然.
158
441794
4644
07:42
So I'm going to just let it run, so you kind of absorb吸收
159
446438
2497
07:44
this sort分類 of thing, and I'll describe描述 my sort分類 of reactions反應
160
448935
3201
07:48
when I was looking at it for the very first time.
161
452136
2677
07:50
I got the feeling感覺 that my brain wanted to basically基本上
162
454813
4566
07:55
see it come back to life.
163
459379
1385
07:56
I automatically自動 wanted to see this ship,
164
460764
2721
07:59
this magnificent華麗的 ship, basically基本上 in all its glory榮耀,
165
463485
2663
08:02
and conversely反過來, I wanted to see it not in all its glory榮耀,
166
466148
3076
08:05
basically基本上 go back to what it looks容貌 like.
167
469224
2448
08:07
So I conjured喚出 up an effect影響 that I'm later後來 going to show顯示 you
168
471672
3460
08:11
what I tried試著 to do, which哪一個 is kind of the heart of the movie電影,
169
475132
2405
08:13
for me, and so that's why I wanted to do the movie電影,
170
477537
3599
08:17
that's why I wanted to create創建 the sort分類 of things I created創建.
171
481136
3596
08:20
And I'll show顯示 you, you know, another另一個 thing that I found發現
172
484732
1981
08:22
interesting有趣 is what we really were emoting作表情 to
173
486713
2287
08:24
when you take a look at it.
174
489000
1418
08:26
So here's這裡的 the behind背後 the scenes場景, a couple一對 of little shots鏡頭 here.
175
490418
2906
08:29
So, when you saw my footage
176
493324
1963
08:31
you were seeing眼看 this: basically基本上, a bunch of guys
177
495287
2643
08:33
flipping翻轉 a ship upside上邊 down, and the little Mir米爾 subs潛艇
178
497930
2997
08:36
are actually其實 about the size尺寸 of small footballs足球,
179
500927
2605
08:39
and shot射擊 in smoke抽煙.
180
503532
2033
08:41
Jim吉姆 went three miles英里 went down, and I went about
181
505565
2210
08:43
three miles英里 away from the studio工作室
182
507775
1598
08:45
and photographed拍照 this in a garage車庫.
183
509373
2600
08:47
And so, but what you're emoting作表情 to, or what you're looking
184
511973
2231
08:50
at, had the same相同 feeling感覺, the same相同 haunting令人難以忘懷 quality質量,
185
514204
3112
08:53
that Jim's吉姆 footage鏡頭 had, so I found發現 it so fascinating迷人
186
517316
3241
08:56
that our brains大腦 sort分類 of, once一旦 you believe something's什麼是 real真實,
187
520557
4492
09:00
you transfer轉讓 everything that you feel about it,
188
525049
2807
09:03
this quality質量 you have, and it's totally完全 artificial人造.
189
527856
2392
09:06
It's totally完全 make-believe讓我相信, yet然而 it's not to you,
190
530248
3732
09:09
and I found發現 that that was a very interesting有趣 thing
191
533980
2000
09:11
to explore探索 and use, and it caused造成 me to create創建 the next下一個
192
535980
2795
09:14
effect影響 that I'll show顯示 you, which哪一個 is
193
538775
1795
09:16
this sort分類 of magic魔法 transition過渡, and all I was really attempting嘗試
194
540570
3215
09:19
to do is basically基本上 have the audience聽眾 cue球桿 the effect影響,
195
543785
3953
09:23
so it became成為 a seamless無縫 experience經驗 for them,
196
547738
2652
09:26
that I wasn't showing展示 you my sort分類 of interpretation解釋,
197
550390
2330
09:28
I was showing展示 you what you wanted to see.
198
552720
2921
09:31
And the very next下一個 shot射擊, right after this --
199
555641
6783
09:38
So you can see what I was doing.
200
562424
1565
09:39
So basically基本上, if there's two subs潛艇 in the same相同 shot射擊,
201
563989
1794
09:41
I shot射擊 it, because where's哪裡 the camera相機 coming未來 from?
202
565783
2908
09:44
And when Jim吉姆 shot射擊 it, it was only one sub,
203
568691
1561
09:46
because he was photographing拍攝 from the other,
204
570252
1271
09:47
and I don't remember記得 if I did this or Jim吉姆 did this.
205
571523
1704
09:49
I'll give it to Jim吉姆, because he could use the pat on the back.
206
573227
3370
09:52
(Laughter
207
576597
6318
09:58
Okay. So now the Titanic泰坦尼克號 transition過渡.
208
582915
2339
10:01
So this is what I was referring to where I wanted to basically基本上
209
585254
3151
10:04
magically神奇 transplant移植 from one state of the Titanic泰坦尼克號
210
588405
2917
10:07
to the other. So I'll just play the shot射擊 once一旦. (Music音樂)
211
591322
3948
10:11
(Music
212
595270
3440
10:14
And what I was hoping希望 for is that it just melts熔體 in front面前 of you.
213
598710
5752
That was the last time Titanic泰坦尼克號 ever saw daylight陽光.
214
609754
4541
10:30
RLRL: So, what I did is basically基本上 I had another另一個
215
614295
2789
10:32
screening篩查 room房間 experience經驗 where I was basically基本上 tracking追踪
216
617084
2838
10:35
where I was looking, or where we were looking,
217
619922
2302
10:38
and of course課程 you're looking at the two people on the bow
218
622224
2418
10:40
of the ship, and then at some point,
219
624642
2193
但接著
10:42
I'm changing改變 the periphery周邊 of the shot射擊,
220
626835
2018
10:44
I'm changing改變, it's becoming變得 the rusted生鏽 wreck破壞,
221
628853
2322
10:47
and then I would run it every一切 day, and then I would find
222
631175
3009
10:50
exactly究竟 the moment時刻 that I stopped停止 looking at them
223
634184
3067
10:53
and start開始 noticing注意到 the rest休息 of it, and the moment時刻
224
637251
2190
10:55
my eye shifted, we just marked it to the frame.
225
639441
2558
10:57
The moment時刻 my eye shifted, I immediately立即 started開始
226
641999
2376
11:00
to change更改 them, so now somehow不知何故 you missed錯過
227
644375
2339
11:02
where it started開始 and where it stopped停止.
228
646714
2340
11:04
And so I'll just show顯示 it one more time.
229
649054
2153
11:07
(Music音樂) And it's literally按照字面 doneDONE by using運用 what our brains大腦
230
651207
3197
11:10
naturally自然 do for us, which哪一個 is, as soon不久 as you shift轉移
231
654404
3735
11:14
your attention注意, something changes變化, and then I left
232
658139
1952
11:15
the little scarf圍巾 going, because it really wanted to be
233
660091
2143
11:18
a ghostly幽靈的 shot射擊, really wanted to feel like they were still
234
662234
3853
11:21
on the wreck破壞, essentially實質上. That's where they were buried隱藏 forever永遠.
235
666087
3330
11:25
Or something like that. I just made製作 that up.
236
669417
2009
11:27
(Laughter
237
671426
2469
11:29
It was, incidentally順便, the last time I ever saw daylight陽光.
238
673895
1884
11:31
It was a long film電影 to work on. (Laughter笑聲)
239
675779
3471
11:35
Now, "Hugo雨果" was another另一個 interesting有趣 movie電影, because
240
679250
2282
11:37
the movie電影 itself本身 is about film電影 illusions幻想.
241
681532
2110
11:39
It's about how our brain is tricked被騙 into seeing眼看 a persistence堅持
242
683642
2865
11:42
of vision視力 that creates創建 a motion運動 picture圖片,
243
686507
2818
11:45
and one of the things I had to do is, we —
244
689325
3674
11:48
Sasha薩沙 Baron男爵 Cohen科恩 is a very clever聰明, very smart聰明 guy,
245
692999
3327
11:52
comedian喜劇演員, wanted to basically基本上 do an homage尊敬 to the kind of
246
696326
2151
11:54
the Buster巴斯特 Keaton基頓 sort分類 of slapstick鬧劇 things, and he wanted
247
698477
2228
11:56
his leg brace支撐 to get caught抓住 on a moving移動 train培養.
248
700705
3308
11:59
Very dangerous危險, very impossible不可能 to do, and particularly尤其
249
704013
2121
12:02
on our stage階段, because there literally按照字面 is no way to actually其實
250
706134
3325
12:05
move移動 this train培養, because it fits適合 so snugly緊貼 into our set.
251
709459
4864
12:10
So let me show顯示 you the scene現場, and then I basically基本上
252
714323
2463
12:12
used the trick that was identified確定 by Sergei謝爾蓋 Eisenstein愛森斯坦,
253
716786
3683
我是用Sergei Eisenstein(俄國導演)發明的方式
12:16
which哪一個 is, if you have a camera相機 that's moving移動 with a moving移動
254
720469
3174
12:19
object目的, what is not moving移動 appears出現 to be moving移動,
255
723643
2769
12:22
and what is moving移動 appears出現 to be stopped停止,
256
726412
2599
12:24
so what you're actually其實 seeing眼看 now is the train培養 is not
257
729011
2915
12:27
moving移動 at all, and what is actually其實 moving移動 is the floor地板.
258
731926
5080
12:32
So this is the shot射擊. That's a little video視頻 of
259
737006
3031
12:35
what you're looking at there, which哪一個 is our little test測試,
260
740037
3282
12:39
so that's actually其實 what you're seeing眼看, and I thought it was
261
743319
2579
12:41
sort分類 of an interesting有趣 thing, because it was, part部分
262
745898
2157
12:43
of the homage尊敬 of the movie電影 itself本身 is coming未來 up with this
263
748055
3325
12:47
sort分類 of genius天才 trick which哪一個 I can't take credit信用 for.
264
751380
2518
12:49
I'd love to but I can't, because it was invented發明
265
753898
2665
12:52
like in 1910 or something like that, is I told Marty馬蒂,
266
756563
4645
12:57
and it's kind of one of those mind心神 things that it's
267
761208
1656
12:58
really hard to really get until直到 you actually其實 see it work,
268
762864
2381
13:01
and I said, you know, what I was going to do, and he said,
269
765245
2880
13:04
"So, let me see if I can get this straight直行. The thing with the wheels車輪?
270
768125
2222
13:06
That doesn't move移動."
271
770347
1953
13:11
"And the thing without the wheels車輪, that moves移動."
273
775718
3976
13:18
Brings帶來 me to the next下一個, and final最後 --
275
782169

13:20
Marty's馬蒂的 not going to see this, is he? (Laughter笑聲)
276
784964
4069
13:24
This isn't viewed觀看 outside of -- (Laughter笑聲)
277
789033
3790
13:28
The next下一個 illustration插圖 is something that, there's like
278
792823
4427
13:33
all one shot射擊 theory理論. It's a very elegant優雅 way of telling告訴 a story故事,
279
797250
3062
13:36
especially特別 if you're following以下 somebody on a journey旅程,
280
800312
2057
13:38
and that journey旅程 basically基本上 tells告訴 something about
281
802369
2308
13:40
their personality個性 in a very concise簡潔 way,
282
804677
2241
13:42
and what we wanted to do based基於 on the shot射擊 in "Goodfellas好傢伙,"
283
806918
2383
13:45
which哪一個 is one of the great shots鏡頭 ever,
284
809301
1884
13:47
a Martin馬丁 Scorsese斯科塞斯 film電影, of basically基本上 following以下 Henry亨利 Hill爬坡道
285
811185
3377
13:50
through通過 what it feels感覺 like to be a gangster流氓 walk步行
286
814562
2136
13:52
going through通過 the Copacabana科帕卡巴納 and being存在 treated治療 in a special特別 way.
287
816698
2563
Copacabana
13:55
He was the master of his universe宇宙, and we wanted Hugo雨果
288
819261
3507
13:58
to feel the same相同 way, so we created創建 this shot射擊.
289
822768
2656
14:01
(Music
290
825424
3317
14:04
That's Hugo雨果. (Music音樂)
291
828741
5026
14:09
And we felt that if we could basically基本上 move移動 the camera相機
292
833767
3077
14:12
with him, we would feel what it feels感覺 like to be this boy男孩
293
836844
2690
14:15
who is basically基本上 the master of his universe宇宙,
294
839534
2791
14:18
and his universe宇宙 is, you know, behind背後 the scenes場景
295
842325
2459
14:20
in the bowels腸子 of this particular特定 train培養 station
296
844784
2641
14:23
that only he can actually其實 navigate導航 through通過
297
847425
2304
14:25
and do it this way, and we had to make it feel that
298
849729
2299
14:27
this is his normal正常, everyday每天 sort分類 of life,
299
852028
2307
14:30
so the idea理念 of doing it as one shot射擊 was very important重要,
300
854335
2566
14:32
and of course課程, in shooting射擊 in 3D, which哪一個 is basically基本上
301
856901
2616
14:35
it's a huge巨大 camera相機 that's hanging off of a giant巨人 stick,
302
859517
4011
14:39
so to recreate重建 a steadycamsteadycam shot射擊 was the task任務,
303
863528
3522
14:42
and make it feel kind of like what the reaction反應 you got
304
867050
3266
14:46
when you saw the "Goodfellas好傢伙" shot射擊.
305
870316
1562
14:47
So what you're now going to see is how we actually其實 did it.
306
871878
3801
14:51
It's actually其實 five separate分離 sets shot射擊 at five different不同 times
307
875679
3185
14:54
with two different不同 boys男孩.
308
878864
1187
14:55
The one on the left is where the shot射擊 ends結束,
309
880051
2162
14:58
and the shot射擊 on the right is where it takes over,
310
882213
5426
15:03
and now we switch開關 boys男孩, so it went from Asa作為一個 Butterfield巴特菲爾德,
311
887639
3505
Asa Butterfield
15:07
who's誰是 the star of the show顯示, to his stand-in站在. (Music音樂)
312
891144
3874
15:10
I wouldn't不會 say his stunt特技 double. There's a crazy rig操縱
313
895018
1849
15:12
that we built內置 for this. (Music音樂)
314
896867
2464
15:15
And so this is, and now this is set number three
315
899331
3551
15:18
we're into, and then we're going to go into, basically基本上
316
902882
4380
15:23
the very last moment時刻 of the shot射擊 is actually其實
317
907262
2664
15:25
the steadycamsteadycam shot射擊. Everything else其他 was shot射擊 on cranes起重機
318
909926
2282
15:28
and various各個 things like that, and it literally按照字面 was doneDONE
319
912208
2045
15:30
over five different不同 sets, two different不同 boys男孩, different不同 times,
320
914253
3297
15:33
and it all had to feel like it was all one shot射擊, and what was
321
917550
2830
15:36
sort分類 of great for me was it was probably大概
322
920380
4695
15:40
the best-reviewed最佳評審 shot射擊 I've ever worked工作 on,
323
925075
2517
15:43
and, you know, I was kind of proud驕傲 of it when I was doneDONE,
324
927592
2588
15:46
which哪一個 is, you should never really be proud驕傲 of stuff東東, I guess猜測.
325
930180
4898
15:50
So I was kind of proud驕傲 of it, and I went to a friend朋友 of mine,
326
935078
2810
15:53
and said, "You know, this is, you know, kind of
327

15:55

15:57
What do you think was the reason

16:00
And he said, "Because no one knows知道

16:01
you had anything to do with it."
331
946005
