ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kevin Breel - Comedian, activist
Writer, comic and mental health activist Kevin Breel speaks up about depression.

Why you should listen

As a teenager, Kevin Breel almost took his own life. His story, so powerfully told in his viral TEDxYouth Talk, gives voice to an often silent struggle and offers a message of hope.

As Jack Knox writes in the Times Colonist :

His story, abbreviated, is this: He grew up in Cadboro Bay, a popular kid, fun at parties, English and drama awards, always on the honour roll, captain of the Lambrick Park basketball team when it was ranked No. 1 in the province. Under it all was the other him, the kid who plunged into depression at age 13 when his best friend died in a car crash.

Breel now speaks out about his own depression, with a mission of helping kids his age realize they're not alone.

es difícil para todos.
02:05
so much so that no one'suno talkinghablando about it.
43
113321

Tanto, que nadie lo hace.
02:07
And no one'suno talkinghablando about depressiondepresión, but we need to be,
44
115689
2394
Nadie habla de depresión,
pero deberíamos hacerlo,
02:10
because right now it's a massivemasivo problemproblema.
45
118083
3742
porque en la actualidad
es un problema a nivel mundial.
02:13
It's a massivemasivo problemproblema.
46
121825
1670
Un problema mundial de salud.
02:15
But we don't see it on socialsocial mediamedios de comunicación, right?
47
123495
1802
Pero no lo vemos
en los medios, ¿verdad?
02:17
We don't see it on FacebookFacebook. We don't see it on TwitterGorjeo.
48
125297
2088
No lo vemos
en Facebook, ni en Twitter.
02:19
We don't see it on the newsNoticias, because it's not happycontento,
49
127385
1822
No lo vemos en las noticias,
porque no es alegre,
02:21
it's not fundivertido, it's not lightligero.
50
129207
1629
no es divertido, no es trivial.
02:22
And so because we don't see it, we don't see the severitygravedad of it.
51
130836
3595
Y como no lo vemos,
no vemos su dureza.
02:26
But the severitygravedad of it and the seriousnessgravedad of it is this:
52
134431
3759
Pero la dureza y la gravedad
se deben a esto:
02:30
everycada 30 secondssegundos,
53
138190
1723
cada 30 segundos,
02:31
everycada 30 secondssegundos, somewherealgun lado,
54
139913
2204
cada 30 segundos, en algún lugar,
02:34
someonealguien in the worldmundo takes theirsu ownpropio life
55
142117
2193
alguien en el mundo se quita la vida
02:36
because of depressiondepresión,
56
144310
1077
a causa de la depresión.
02:37
and it mightpodría be two blocksbloques away, it mightpodría be two countriespaíses away,
57
145387
2240
Puede ser a dos manzanas
o a dos países de distancia,
02:39
it mightpodría be two continentscontinentes away, but it's happeningsucediendo,
58
147627
1530
o a dos continentes,
pero está pasando,
02:41
and it's happeningsucediendo everycada singlesoltero day.
59
149157
2570
y pasa cada día.
02:43
And we have a tendencytendencia, as a societysociedad,
60
151727
2964
Y tenemos la tendencia,
como sociedad,
02:46
to look at that and go, "So what?"
61
154691
5246
de verlo y decir: "¿Y qué?"
02:51
So what? We look at that, and we go, "That's your problemproblema.
62
159937
4655
¿Y qué? Lo vemos
y decimos: "Ese es tu problema.
02:56
That's theirsu problemproblema."
63
164592
2403
Ese es su problema".
02:58
We say we're sadtriste and we say we're sorry,
64
166995
1852
Decimos que lo sentimos
y que nos entristece,
03:00
but we alsoademás say, "So what?"
65
168847
1377
pero también decimos: "¿Y qué?"
03:02
