ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kamau Gachigi - Technologist
At Gearbox, Kamau Gachigi empowers Kenya's next generation of creators to prototype and fabricate their visions.

Why you should listen

Dr. Kamau Gachigi is the founding executive director of Gearbox, Kenya's first open makerspace for rapid prototyping, based in Nairobi. Gearbox provides a unique window into Industry 4.0 capabilities to innovators in Kenya, and it offers incubation/acceleration services. Gachigi also co-founded the Africa Innovation Ecosystems Group (AIEG), a company that focuses on creating and managing real-estate based innovation centers of varying scales.

Before establishing Gearbox, Gachigi headed the University of Nairobi's Science and Technology Park, where he founded a fab lab full of manufacturing and prototyping tools in 2009. He then built another lab at the Riruta Satellite in an impoverished neighborhood in the city. Gachigi is a member of the Global Council on the Future of Production under the World Economic Forum and of the consultative advisory group of the World Bank's Partnership for skills in the Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology.

02:56
And so I was ablecapable to convinceconvaincre

d'en acheter un pour l'université

03:02
And immediatelyimmédiatement, we had wonderfulformidable resultsrésultats.
61

Et nous avons eu des résultats immédiats.
03:04
We saw all kindssortes

Toutes sortes d'innovations
sont apparues,
03:06
and for the first time
in this contextle contexte at the universityUniversité,
63
174653

et pour la première fois
dans ce cadre universitaire,
03:09
engineeringingénierie studentsélèves
from differentdifférent disciplinesdisciplines
64
177487
3611
des étudiants ingénieurs
venant de disciplines différentes
03:13
were doing the lablaboratoire and practicalpratique exercisesexercices

65
181122

faisaient leurs travaux pratiques
ensemble dans le même espace.
03:17
NormallyNormalement, they'dils auraient be siloedcloisonnées.
66
185049
1851
D'habitude, ils sont isolés.
03:18
And not just that, but studentsélèves
who weren'tn'étaient pas engineersingénieurs at all
67
186924
2876
Et en plus de ça, des étudiants
n'étant pas ingénieurs
03:21
were alsoaussi workingtravail in the sameMême placeendroit,
68
189824
1902
travaillaient aussi dans le même espace,
03:23
and non-studentsles non-étudiants, people

69

et des gens de l'extérieur,

03:26
were alsoaussi comingvenir into this spaceespace.
70
194957
1603
venaient aussi dans cet endroit.
03:28
So you had this richriches mixmélanger of people,
71
196584
1667
Il y avait donc un mélange riche,
03:30
people who think
differentlydifféremment from one anotherun autre,
72
198275
2145
de personnes qui pensent
différemment,
03:32
and this always
is really good for innovationinnovation.
73
200444
2385
et ça c'est toujours très bon
pour l'innovation.
03:34
I was really proudfier of what we were seeingvoyant.
74
202853
2088
J'étais très fier de ce qu'il se passait.
03:36
So you can imagineimaginer my surprisesurprise
75
204965
1444
Imaginez donc ma surprise
03:38
when one day the deandoyen of engineeringingénierie
camevenu and said to me,
76
206433
3014
quand un jour le doyen
du département ingénieur me dit,
03:41
"KamauKamau, the studentsélèves
who spenddépenser mostles plus of the time in the FabFab LabLab

« Kamau, les étudiants

78
213392
1388
échouent aux examens. »
03:47
I said, "What do you mean?"
79
215251
1577
J'ai dit,
« Que voulez-vous dire ? »
03:49
And I lookedregardé into it, and he was right,
80
217791
2388
Et j'ai constaté qu' il avait raison,
03:52
and the reasonraison they were failingéchouer
81
220203
1563
et ils échouaient parce que
03:53
is that they'dils auraient honedaiguisé theirleur skillscompétences
so well in certaincertain things
82
221790
2791
leurs compétences dans certains domaines
étaient si bonnes
03:56
that they were going out into the cityville
and offeringoffre servicesprestations de service for moneyargent.
83
224605
3452
qu'ils allaient offrir leurs services
en ville pour de l'argent.
04:00
So they were makingfabrication moneyargent --
84
228081
1417
Ils gagnaient de l'argent --
04:01
(LaughterRires)
85
229522
1051
(Rires)
04:02
and they thereforedonc
weren'tn'étaient pas focusingse concentrer on theirleur studiesétudes.
86
230597
2731
et donc ne se concentraient pas
sur leurs études.
04:05
And I thought,
what a good problemproblème to have.
87
233352
2057
Et je me suis dit,
c'est un bon problème.
04:07
(LaughterRires)
88
235433
1016
(Rires)
04:08
Don't quotecitation me on that.
I'm an academicianacadémicien.
89
236473
2111
Ne me citez pas là-dessus.
Je suis professeur.
04:11
So we needednécessaire to scaleéchelle this,
90
239613
2604
Il fallait diminuer ça,
04:14
and at the universityUniversité,
things were a bitbit too bureaucraticbureaucratique,
91
242241
3182
et à l'université,
les choses sont trop bureaucratiques,
04:17
and so I moveddéplacé out and I hookedaccroché up
with people who, in NairobiNairobi,
92
245447
3215
donc j'ai déménagé et j'ai contacté
des gens qui, à Nairobi,
04:20

04:26
And some of these placesdes endroits

04:31
And togetherensemble we setensemble up a spaceespace

97

Et ensemble nous sommes en train
d'organiser un espace.
04:36
We'veNous avons moveddéplacé from where we were.
98

On a déménagé
04:37
We are in a much largerplus grand spaceespace,

04:39
and we're sortTrier of makingfabrication availabledisponible

et on met à disposition
toute une gamme de matériel,
04:42

04:49
It's a bitbit like a gymsalle de gym,

104

Comme une salle de sport,
on vient, on paye
04:52
you get taughtenseigné how to use the equipmentéquipement,
105
280168
1914
on apprend à utiliser le matériel,
04:54
and then you're setensemble freegratuit to innovateinnover
and do whateverpeu importe it is that you want,
106
282106
3715
et puis on est libre d'innover
ou de faire ce que l'on veut,
04:57
and you don't have to be
an engineeringénieur, necessarilynécessairement.
107
285845
2629
pas besoin d'être un ingénieur.
05:00
And some of the people in the spaceespace
are settingréglage up a smallpetit companycompagnie.
108
288498
3191
Certains sont en train
de monter une petite entreprise.
05:03
They just need a spaceespace at a deskbureau,
109
291713
1670
Un coin avec une table leur suffit,
05:05
and so we providefournir that at a feefrais,
110
293407
1573
et on leur loue ça,
05:07
and othersautres take up biggerplus gros spacesles espaces
and are ablecapable to setensemble up theirleur officesdes bureaux.
111
295004
3286
et d'autres prennent plus de place
et peuvent installer leur bureau.
05:10
They're furtherplus loin alongle long de.
112
298314
1232
Ils ont pris de l'avance.
05:11
Maybe theirleur companycompagnie has been runningfonctionnement
for a certaincertain periodpériode of time.
113
299570
3096
Ils dirigent leur entreprise depuis
un certain temps.
05:14
And so we're ablecapable
to accommodateaccommoder all of this
114
302690
2069
Donc on peut acceuillir
tout cela
05:16
in an innovationinnovation spaceespace

dans un espace d'innovation

122
324866
3064
« J'ai besoin de ce circuit
pour un système de paiement à l'acte. »
05:39
And so this is a modelmaquette for businessEntreprise
123
327954
2387
Donc c'est un modèle d'entreprise
05:42
that's madefabriqué accessibilityaccessibilité to goodsdes biens
and servicesprestations de service for very poorpauvre people
124
330365
4801
qui donne accès aux biens et services
pour les gens très pauvres
05:47
really much easierPlus facile,
because they're ablecapable to payPayer a little bitbit,
125
335190
2913
bien plus facilement
parce qu'ils peuvent payer
05:50
like a dollardollar a day, for exampleExemple,
126
338127
1795
un dollar par jour par exemple
05:51
for a specificspécifique serviceun service.
127
339946
1648
pour un service particulier.
05:53
And so this companycompagnie wanted
to pilotpilote a newNouveau ideaidée that they had,
128
341618
2985
Et cette entreprise voulait essayer
une nouvelle idée,
05:56
and so they just needednécessaire 50 circuitsles circuits,
129
344627
1785
et il leur fallait juste 50 circuits,
05:58
so they hiredembauché him to make them,
130
346436
1478
donc ils l'ont embauché
05:59
and what you're seeingvoyant him doing there is,
131
347938
2079
et ce qu'il fait là,
06:02
he's ablecapable to designconception on the computerordinateur
what the circuitcircuit will be
132
350041
3316
il dessine sur l'ordinateur
ce que sera le circuit
06:05
and then transfertransfert it
to an etchinggravure processprocessus --
133
353381
2104
et il le transfère à la gravure --
06:07
that's the imageimage on the topHaut right --
134
355509
1716
c'est l'image en haut à droite --
06:09
and then populateremplir the boardplanche
usingen utilisant this robotrobot.
135
357249
3244
et il remplit la plaque à l'aide du robot.
06:12
And so what would normallynormalement take him maybe
a day or something to soldersoudure by handmain,
136
360517
4691
Donc ce qui normalement lui prendrait
une journée à soudre à la main,
06:17
he can do in a fewpeu minutesminutes
usingen utilisant this machinemachine.
137
365232
2199
il le fait en quelques minutes
avec la machine.
06:19
So he was ablecapable to completeAchevée
the entiretout ordercommande withindans GearboxBoîte de vitesses,
138
367455
2793
Il a réussi à finir toute la commande
au sein de Gearbox,
06:22
and this is really importantimportant,
139
370272
1420
et ça c'est très important,
06:23
because if it wasn'tn'était pas for
what we providedà condition de right now,
140
371716
2763
parce que sans cette mise à disposition,
06:26
he would have had to have hiredembauché
a companycompagnie in ChinaLa Chine to do this,
141
374503
3883
il aurait dû sous-traiter une entreprise
en Chine pour le faire,
06:30
and because it's suchtel a smallpetit ordercommande,
it would have takenpris a long time.
142
378410
3260
et comme c'est une petite commande,
ça aurait pris du temps.
06:33
It would be a smallpetit companycompagnie,
143
381694
1516
Sous-traité à une petite boîte,
06:35
because biggros companiesentreprises
wouldn'tne serait pas take smallpetit ordersordres,
144
383234
2325
comme les grandes ne seraient pas
intéressées,
06:37
and even then, if they got a biggerplus gros ordercommande,
145
385583
2001
et s'ils avaient une plus grande commande,
06:39
they'dils auraient bumpbosse him off in favorfavoriser of that.
146
387608
2134
elle passerait devant lui.
06:41
And there's languagela langue problemsproblèmes and so on,
147
389766
1906
Et il y a les problèmes de langues,
06:43
so beingétant ablecapable to do it in countryPays
is really very importantimportant,
148
391696
2777
donc c'est important
de pouvoir le faire sur place,
06:46
and of coursecours pilotingpilotage as a phasephase de
withindans the progressle progrès of the businessEntreprise ideaidée
149
394497
5374
et bien sûr la phase d'essai
dans le développement du projet
06:51
is extremelyextrêmement importantimportant, because you can
go back and make correctionsservices correctionnels and so on.
150
399895
3785
est très importante, parce qu'on peut
faire des ajustements.
06:56

what you're looking at is a 3D renderrendre

on voit une représentation en 3D

In this instanceexemple,
it doublesdouble as a plasmaplasma cutterCutter

07:10
And so the plasmaplasma cutterCutter makesfait du possiblepossible
the cuttingCoupe of plateassiette and sheetdrap metalmétal,
157
418350
4984
On peut couper des plaques de métal,
07:15
and basicallyen gros, you make
a designconception on the computerordinateur
158
423358
2245
et on fait la conception
sur l'ordinateur
07:17
and sendenvoyer it over to the machinemachine,
159
425627
1556
et on l'envoie à la machine,
07:19
and then quicklyrapidement and preciselyprécisément,
it will cutCouper the shapesformes you want.
160

qui coupe les formes voulues
rapidement et précisément.
07:22
But in this machinemachine,
161
430287
1157
Mais sur cette machine,
07:23
you can alsoaussi changechangement the plasmaplasma cutterCutter

162
431468
3685
on peut aussi changer le découpeur plasma
et mettre une toupie,
07:27
and then you can carvetailler woodbois as well.
163
435177

pour tailler le bois.
07:29
So this was designedconçu

08:00
So we're really proudfier to be ablecapable to say

On est donc très fiers de dire
08:02
that we have an originaloriginal

178
470277

qu'on a un fabricant de

C'est très important...
08:12
(ApplauseApplaudissements)
182

08:37
ManyDe nombreux of them are planningPlanification

505203

Beaucoup veulent former

08:40
and that's really importantimportant
for the economyéconomie,
192
508371

et c'est très important
pour l'économie,
08:42
but when the magicla magie really happensarrive,

mais la magie
se produira vraiment,
08:44
when these companiesentreprises begincommencer to buyacheter

so supplyla fourniture chainchaîne developmentdéveloppement

196
517441

le développement de la chaîne

09:33
And so we'venous avons teamedfait équipe
WachiraWague up with a bankbanque,
212
561013
3024
Donc on a mis Wachira
en association avec une banque,
09:36
and the bankbanque is payingpayant him

213
564061
3118

09:39
on how to use this industrialindustriel robotrobot.
214
567203
1889
à utiliser ce robot industriel.
09:42
And the resultrésultat is that some of them
215
570131
2469
Et au final, certains d'entre eux
09:44
are going to be ablecapable to get loansprêts

216
572624
3961
vont pouvoir obtenir un prêt

09:48
OthersD’autres will be ablecapable to go to centerscentres

217
576609
3499
D'autres pourront aller dans des centres

09:52
get the designconception doneterminé,
218
580132
1271
réaliser leur conception,
09:53
and take the materialsmatériaux back
that have been madefabriqué really, really fastvite
219
581427

et rapporter les matériaux
fabriqués très très vite
09:56
and assembleassembler them in theirleur ownposséder spacesles espaces.
220
584951
1858
et les monter
dans leurs ateliers.
09:58
So somebodyquelqu'un makingfabrication a gateporte,
for exampleExemple, out of metalmétal,
221
586833
2785
La fabrication d'un portail en métal
par exemple,
10:01
maymai take a weekla semaine to make just one gateporte,
222
589642
1936
peut prendre une semaine,
10:03
but with this machinemachine,
they mightpourrait make 10 in a day.
223
591602
2453
mais avec cette machine,
on en ferait 10 par jours.
10:06
So the productivityproductivité of a largegrand swatheandains

224
594079
2672
La productivité d'une grande partie
de notre population
10:08

225

10:13
because of this kindgentil of machinemachine.
226
601677
1555
grâce à ce genre de machine.
10:15
And that's what we're at the beginningdébut of,
so this is really very excitingpassionnant.
227
603256

C'est le début, et c'est vraiment

She's in her mid-milieu-20s,

10:26
She said that schoolsécoles daysjournées are missedmanqué

232
614961
3382
Beaucoup de jeunes filles manquent
des jours d'école chaque mois
10:30
because of theirleur menstrualmenstruel cyclecycle,
233
618367

à cause de leur menstruations,
10:31
and they're not ablecapable

234
619986
2513
elles ne peuvent pas
acheter de serviettes hygiéniques.
10:34
And the reasonraison that she describeddécrit
235
622523
2032
C'est parce que, nous a-t-elle dit,
10:36
was that the manufacturersfabricants
packagedemballé these in bundlesfaisceaux of sevenSept to 10,
236
624579
3968
les fabricants les emballent
en lots de 7 à 10,
10:40
and breakingrupture it down
is unhygienicmanque d’hygiène at the retailvente au détail levelniveau,
237
628571
3461
et les ouvrir n'est pas
hygiénique au niveau de la vente,
10:44
and packagingemballage eachchaque one
of them is too expensivecoûteux.
238
632056
2682
et les emballer individuellement
coûte trop cher.
10:46
So she thought up an ideaidée,
whichlequel is brilliantbrillant, and simplesimple.
239
634762
3175
Donc elle a eu une idée,
brilliante, et simple.
10:49
Why don't we just use vendingdistributeurs automatiques machinesmachines?
240
637961
1859
Utiliser
des distributeurs automatiques.
10:51
And she, in a very cleannettoyer environmentenvironnement,
can breakPause down the bundlesfaisceaux
241
639844
3191
Elle peut, dans un environnement propre,
séparer les lots
10:55
and fillremplir up the vendingdistributeurs automatiques machinesmachines,
242
643059
1873
et remplir les distributeurs,
10:56
and then girlsfilles can buyacheter
these sanitarysanitaire towelsles serviettes
243
644956
3025
et les filles peuvent les acheter
11:00
in the privacyvie privée of a toilettoilette,
in a publicpublic spaceespace, in a schoolécole, and so on.
244
648005
4166
dans les toilettes, les espaces publics,
à l'école, etc.
11:04
She was ablecapable to pilotpilote this
and it workedtravaillé really very well,
245
652195
2953
Elle a pu faire un essai
qui a très bien marché,
11:07
and she's been ablecapable to sortTrier of
get the bugsbogues out and so on.
246
655172
2716
et elle a pu éliminer
les problèmes initiaux.
11:09
So the significanceimportance here
is that the pilotingpilotage processprocessus is possiblepossible.
247
657912
3461
Ce qui est important ici c'est que
cette phase de pilotage soit possible.
11:13
She's not an engineeringénieur.
248
661397
1233
Elle n'est pas ingénieur.
11:14
She was ablecapable to engageengager people in our spaceespace

249
662654

Elle a pu impliquer les gens présents
