ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ellen Gustafson - Social entrepreneur
Co-founder of FEED and creator of The 30 Project, Ellen Gustafson is trying to change the way the world eats.

Why you should listen

Ellen Gustafson co-founded FEED Projects in 2007, creating an immensely popular bag whose profits are donated to the UN World Food Program (WFP). As a former employee of the WFP, she supported their mission to provide school lunches in developing countries so that children could receive both the nutrition and education they need. FEED has also created special bags and a new fund to address the crisis in Haiti, helping the children they once fed at school to rebuild their schools.

At TEDxEast in May 2010, Gustafson launched The 30 Project -- an effort to address the world’s hunger and obesity problems as a holistic global food issue. In her new venture, she hopes to stimulate a movement that will change our food and agricultural systems over the next 30 years so that healthy, balanced meals are available to all. Before her efforts to fix the world’s food issues, Gustafson’s primary concern was international security. She wrote and edited pieces on international terrorism for ABC and was a research associate at the Council on Foreign Relations.

it's a hard단단한 thing to think about, because what we think about is eating먹기.

02:53
The numbers번호 are pretty예쁜 crazy미친.

it's really important중대한 to look at them as one system체계.
145
332000

05:50
We get a lot of our food식품 from all around the world세계,

05:57
The thing is, I've learned

06:04

06:09
You know, there's 30-year-년 cycles주기.
154
354000

06:11
I think 2010 can be a really interesting재미있는 year
155
356000
2000
06:13
because it is the end종료 of the 30-year-년 cycle주기,
156
358000
2000
06:15
and it's the birthday생일 of the global글로벌 food식품 system체계.
157
360000
2000
06:17
So that's the first birthday생일 I want to talk about.
158
362000
2000
06:19
You know, I think if we really think that
159
364000
2000
06:21
this is something that's happened일어난 in the last 30 years연령, there's hope기대 in that.
160
366000
3000
06:24
It's the thirtieth삼십 anniversary기념일 of GMOGMO crops작물

06:29
the farm농장 crisis위기 in America미국

376000
3000
06:34
So there's a lot of reasons원인 to take this 30-year-년 time period기간
165
379000

06:39
I'm not the only one who's누가 obsessed사로 잡힌 with this whole완전한 30-year-년 thing.

171
394000
3000
06:52
Well, I really care케어 about 1980
172
397000
2000
06:54
because it's also또한 the thirtieth삼십 anniversary기념일 of me this year.
173
399000
3000
06:57
And so in my lifetime일생,
174
402000
3000
07:00
a lot of what's happened일어난 in the world세계 --
175

07:04
a lot of this has really changed변경된.
177
409000
2000
07:06
So my second둘째 dream is that I think
178
411000
2000
07:08
we can look to the next다음 것 30 years연령
179
413000

07:12
And we know what's happened일어난 in the past과거,
181
417000
2000
07:14
so if we start스타트 now, and we look at technologies기술
182
419000
2000
07:16
and improvements개량 to the food식품 system체계 long term기간,
183
421000
2000
07:18
we might be able할 수 있는 to recreate다시 만들다 the food식품 system체계
184
423000
2000
07:20
so when I give my next다음 것 talk and I'm 60 years연령 old늙은,
185
425000
2000
07:22
I'll be able할 수 있는 to say that it's been a success성공.
186
427000

07:25
So I'm announcing발표하다 today오늘 the start스타트 of a new새로운 organization조직,

07:30
And the 30 Project계획 is really focused초점을 맞춘
