ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Amanda Palmer - Musician, blogger
Alt-rock icon Amanda Fucking Palmer believes we shouldn't fight the fact that digital content is freely shareable -- and suggests that artists can and should be directly supported by fans.

Why you should listen

Amanda Palmer commands attention. The singer-songwriter-blogger-provocateur, known for pushing boundaries in both her art and her lifestyle, made international headlines this year when she raised nearly $1.2 million via Kickstarter (she’d asked for $100k) from nearly 25,000 fans who pre-ordered her new album, Theatre Is Evil.

But the former street performer, then Dresden Dolls frontwoman, now solo artist hit a bump the week her world tour kicked off. She revealed plans to crowdsource additional local backup musicians in each tour stop, offering to pay them in hugs, merchandise and beer per her custom. Bitter and angry criticism ensued (she eventually promised to pay her local collaborators in cash). And it's interesting to consider why. As Laurie Coots suggests: "The idea was heckled because we didn't understand the value exchange -- the whole idea of asking the crowd for what you need when you need it and not asking for more or less."

Summing up her business model, in which she views her recorded music as the digital equivalent of street performing, she says: “I firmly believe in music being as free as possible. Unlocked. Shared and spread. In order for artists to survive and create, their audiences need to step up and directly support them.”

Amanda's non-fiction book, The Art of Asking, digs deeply into the topics she addressed in her TED Talk.

and it occurs to me I've never actually done this alone.
106
348441
2466
06:06
I've always been with my band or my crew.
107
350907
1546
06:08
Is this what stupid people do? (Laughter)
108
352453
4492
06:12
Is this how stupid people die?
109
356945
2487
06:15
And before I can change my mind, the door busts open.
110
359432
2066
06:17
She's an artist. He's a financial blogger for Reuters,
111
361498
3518
06:20
and they're pouring me a glass of red wine
112
365016
2314
06:23
and offering me a bath,
113
367330
1171
06:24
and I have had thousands of nights like that and like that.
114
368501
4955
06:29
So I couchsurf a lot. I also crowdsurf a lot.
115
373456
4025
06:33
I maintain couchsurfing and crowdsurfing
116
377481
3328
06:36
are basically the same thing.
117
380809
2288
06:38
You're falling into the audience
118
383097
2504
06:41
and you're trusting each other.
119
385601
1496
06:42
I once asked an opening band of mine
120
387097
2620
06:45
if they wanted to go out into the crowd and pass the hat
121
389717
2523
06:48
to get themselves some extra money, something that I did a lot.
122
392240
2128
06:50
And as usual, the band was psyched,
123
394368
2145
06:52
but there was this one guy in the band
124
396513
2112
06:54
who told me he just couldn't bring himself to go out there.
125
398625
4115
06:58
It felt too much like begging to stand there with the hat.
126
402740
3988
07:02
And I recognized his fear of "Is this fair?" and "Get a job."
127
406728
8682
07:11
And meanwhile, my band is becoming bigger and bigger.
128
415410
3446
07:14
We signed with a major label.
129
418856
2274
07:17
And our music is a cross between punk and cabaret.
130
421130
2761
07:19
It's not for everybody.
131
423891
2205
07:21
Well, maybe it's for you.
132
426096
3368
07:25
We sign, and there's all this hype leading up to our next record.
133
429464
3944
07:29
And it comes out and it sells about 25,000 copies in the first few weeks,
134
433408
5332
07:34
and the label considers this a failure.
135
438740
3376
07:38
And I was like, "25,000, isn't that a lot?"
136
442116
2551
07:40
They were like, "No, the sales are going down. It's a failure."
137
444667
2633
07:43
And they walk off.
138
447300
2278
07:45
Right at this same time, I'm signing and hugging after a gig,
139
449578
3031
07:48
and a guy comes up to me
140
452609
2144
07:50
and hands me a $10 bill,
141
454753
2272
07:52
and he says,
142
457025
1354
07:54
"I'm sorry, I burned your CD from a friend."
143
458379
3758
07:58
(Laughter)
144
462137
3249
08:01
"But I read your blog, I know you hate your label.
145
465386
3465
08:04
I just want you to have this money."
146
468851
2534
08:07
And this starts happening all the time.
147
471385
3840
08:11
I become the hat after my own gigs,
148
475225
3465
08:14
but I have to physically stand there and take the help from people,
149
478690
3286
08:17
and unlike the guy in the opening band,
150
481976
2209
08:20
I've actually had a lot of practice standing there.
151
484185
4030
08:24
Thank you.
152
488215
2116
08:26
And this is the moment I decide
153
490331
2151
08:28
I'm just going to give away my music for free
154
492482
2792
08:31
online whenever possible,
155
495274
1832
08:33
so it's like Metallica over here, Napster, bad;
156
497106
3236
08:36
Amanda Palmer over here, and I'm going to encourage
157
500342
2788
08:39
torrenting, downloading, sharing, but I'm going to ask for help,
158
503130
4349
08:43
because I saw it work on the street.
159
507479
3520
08:46
So I fought my way off my label and for my next project
160
510999
2928
08:49
with my new band, the Grand Theft Orchestra,
161
513927
2704
08:52
I turned to crowdfunding,
162
516631
2728
08:55
and I fell into those thousands of connections that I'd made,
163
519359
4168
08:59
and I asked my crowd to catch me.
164
523527
2768
09:02
And the goal was 100,000 dollars.
165
526295
3048
09:05
My fans backed me at nearly 1.2 million,
166
529343
3505
09:08
which was the biggest music crowdfunding project to date.
167
532848
3255
09:12
(Applause)
168
536103
4088
09:16
And you can see how many people it is.
169
540191
4017
09:20
It's about 25,000 people.
170
544208
4031
09:24
And the media asked, "Amanda,
171
548239
2328
09:26
the music business is tanking and you encourage piracy.
172
550567
2374
09:28
How did you make all these people pay for music?"
173
552941
2045
09:30
And the real answer is, I didn't make them. I asked them.
174
554986
5272
09:36
And through the very act of asking people,
175
560258
3129
09:39
I'd connected with them,
176
563387
2449
09:41
and when you connect with them, people want to help you.
177
565836
4935
09:46
It's kind of counterintuitive for a lot of artists.
178
570771
3774
09:50
They don't want to ask for things.
179
574545
1655
09:52
But it's not easy. It's not easy to ask.
180
576200
5916
09:58
And a lot of artists have a problem with this.
181
582116
2215
10:00
Asking makes you vulnerable.
182
584331
2241
10:02
And I got a lot of criticism online
183
586572
4363
10:06
after my Kickstarter went big
184
590935
1847
10:08
for continuing my crazy crowdsourcing practices,
185
592782
2782
10:11
specifically for asking musicians
186
595564
2419
10:13
who are fans if they wanted to join us on stage
187
597983
2846
10:16
for a few songs in exchange for love and tickets
188
600829
3502
10:20
and beer, and this was a doctored image
189
604331
3097
10:23
that went up of me on a website.
190
607428
3328
10:26
And this hurt in a really familiar way.
191
610756
3241
10:29
And people saying, "You're not allowed anymore
192
613997
2974
10:32
to ask for that kind of help,"
193
616971
1764
10:34
really reminded me of the people in their cars yelling, "Get a job."
194
618735
4568
10:39
Because they weren't with us on the sidewalk,
195
623303
4384
10:43
and they couldn't see the exchange
196
627687
3546
10:47
that was happening between me and my crowd,
197
631233
2037
10:49
an exchange that was very fair to us but alien to them.
198
633270
5490
10:54
So this is slightly not safe for work.
199
638760
1924
10:56
This is my Kickstarter backer party in Berlin.
200
640684
2672
10:59
At the end of the night, I stripped and let everyone draw on me.
201
643356
3481
11:02
Now let me tell you, if you want to experience
202
646837
2819
11:05
the visceral feeling of trusting strangers,
203
649656
3079
11:08
I recommend this,
204
652735
2102
11:10
especially if those strangers are drunk German people.
205
654837
4116
11:14
This was a ninja master-level fan connection,
206
658953
4642
11:19
because what I was really saying here was,
207
663595
2908
11:22
I trust you this much.
208
666503
2600
11:25
Should I? Show me.
209
669103
4120
11:29
For most of human history,
210
673223
1846
11:30
musicians, artists, they've been part of the community,
211
675069
5342
11:36
connectors and openers, not untouchable stars.
212
680411
4423
11:40
Celebrity is about a lot of people loving you from a distance,
213
684834
4342
11:45
but the Internet and the content
214
689176
2023
11:47
that we're freely able to share on it
215
691199
2608
11:49
are taking us back.
216
693807
2937
11:52
It's about a few people loving you up close
217
696744
3708
11:56
and about those people being enough.
218
700452
4487
12:00
So a lot of people are confused by the idea
219
