I'd like to introduce you
to an interesting person named Ötzi.

00:18
He lives in Italy

South Tyrol Museum of
Archaeology
00:22
because he's a mummy.
3
10125
1667
00:24
This is an artist's rendition
of what he might have looked like
4
12833
2976
00:27
when he was alive 5,300 years ago.
5
15833
1625
00:30
You want to see what he looks like today?
6
18481
1953

00:33
OK, brace yourselves,
gross mummy pic coming at you.

2875
00:37
So, he's not as handsome as he used to be,
9
25833
4476
00:42
but he's actually
in great shape for a mummy
10
30333
2768
00:45
because he was discovered frozen in ice.
11
33125
2292
00:48
Ötzi is the oldest mummy that's been
discovered with preserved skin.
12
36417
4226
00:52
5,300 years is super old,
13
40667
2101
00:54
older than the Egyptian pyramids,
14
42792
2267
00:57
and Ötzi's skin is covered
in 61 black tattoos,
15
45083
5935
01:03
all lines and crosses on parts of his body
16
51042
2476
01:05
where he might have experienced pain.
17
53542
2851
01:08
So scientists think
that they might have been used
18
56417
2559
01:11
to mark sites for some kind of therapy,
19
59000
1934
01:12
like acupuncture.
20
60958
1250
01:15
So clearly, if the oldest skin we've seen
21
63375
3643
01:19
is all tattooed up,
22
67042
1642
01:20
tattooing is a very ancient practice.
23
68708
2643
01:23
But fast-forward to today
and tattoos are everywhere.
24
71375
3893
01:27
Almost one in four Americans has a tattoo,
25
75292
2851
01:30
it's a multibillion-dollar industry,
26
78167
2684
01:32
and whether you love tattoos or hate them,
27
80875
2559
01:35
this talk will change the way
you think about them.
28
83458
2667
01:38
So, why are tattoos so popular?
29
86833
2417
01:42
Unlike Ötzi, most of us today use tattoos
for some kind of self-expression.
30
90542
4750
01:48
Personally, I love tattoos
because I love art
31
96333
3060
01:51
and there is something so wonderful to me,
32
99417
2309
01:53
almost romantic, about the way
a tattoo as an art form
33
101750
3476
01:57
cannot be commodified.
34
105250
2476
01:59
Right? Your tattoo
lives and dies with you.
35
107750
2518
02:02
It can't be bought or sold or traded,
36
110292
2684
02:05
so its only value
is really personal to you,
37
113000
2268
02:07
and I love that.
38
115292
1892
02:09
Now, I tend to gravitate
towards really colorful tattoos
39
117208
2685
02:11
because I'm obsessed with color.
40
119917
1726
02:13
I teach a whole course on it
at my university.
41
121667
2601
02:16
But my very first tattoo
was an all-black tattoo
42
124292
3142
02:19
like Ötzi's.
43
127458
1726
02:21
Yep, I did that clichéd thing
that young people do sometimes
44
129208
3643
02:24
and I got a tattoo
in a language I can't even read.
45
132875
3184
02:28
(Laughter)
46
136083
1560
02:29
OK, but I was 19 years old,
47
137667
2767
02:32
I had just returned
from my first trip overseas,
48
140458
3101
02:35
I was in Japan in the mountains
49
143583
2393
02:38
meditating in Buddhist monasteries,
50
146000
2476
02:40
and it was a really meaningful
experience to me,
51
148500
2268
02:42
so I wanted to commemorate it
with this Japanese and Chinese character
52
150792
3309
02:46
for "mountain."
53
154125
1292
02:48
Now, here's what blows my mind.
54
156708
3226
02:51
My 14-year-old tattoo
55
159958
2435
02:54
and Ötzi's 5,300-year-old tattoos
56
162417
3517
02:57
are made of the same exact stuff:
57
165958
3060
03:01
soot,
58
169042
1559
03:02
that black powdery carbon dust
59
170625
2101
03:04
that gets left behind in the fireplace
when you burn stuff.
60
172750
3601
03:08
And if you zoom way, way in
on either my tattoo or Ötzi's tattoos,
61
176375
4184
03:12
you'll find that they all
look something like this.
62
180583
2417
03:16
A tattoo is nothing more
than a bunch of tiny pigment particles,
63
184167
3559
03:19
soot in this case,
64
187750
1726
03:21
that get trapped in the dermis,
65
189500
1518
03:23
which is the layer of tissue
right underneath the surface of the skin.
66
191042
3851
03:26
So in over five thousand years,
67
194917
2726
03:29
we've done very little
to update tattoo technology,
68
197667
3184
03:32
apart from getting access to more colors
69
200875
2684
03:35
and slightly more efficient
methods of installation.
70
203583
2792
03:39
While I'm an artist, I'm also a scientist,
71
207958
2976
03:42
and I direct a laboratory
that researches nanotechnology,
72
210958
3893
03:46
which is the science of building things
with ultratiny building blocks,
73
214875
4268
03:51
thousands of times smaller even
than the width of a human hair.
74
219167
3642
03:54
And I began to ask myself,
75
222833
1810
03:56
how could nanotechnology serve tattooing?
76
224667
2416
04:00
If tattoos are just
a bunch of particles in the skin,
77
228125
3268
04:03
could we swap those particles out for ones
that do something more interesting?
78
231417
4083
04:08
Here's my big idea:
79
236542
1851
04:10
I believe that tattoos
can give you superpowers.
80
238417
2767
04:13
(Laughter)
81
241208
1643
04:14
Now, I don't mean
they're going to make us fly,
82
242875
2226
04:17
but I do think
that we can have superpowers
83
245125
2268
04:19
in the sense that tattoos
can give us new abilities
84
247417
3809
04:23
that we don't currently possess.
85
251250
1708
04:26
By upgrading the particles,
we can engineer tattooing
86
254167
3767
04:29
so that it will change
not only the appearance of our skin,
87
257958
3184
04:33
but also the function of our skin.
88
261166
1751
04:36
Let me show you.
89
264083
1560
04:37
This is a diagram of a microcapsule.
90
265667
2791
04:41
It's a tiny hollow particle
with a protective outer shell,
91
269083
3101
04:44
about the size of a tattoo pigment,
92
272208
2060
04:46
and you can fill the inside
with practically whatever you want.

04:50
So what if we put interesting materials
inside of these microcapsules
94
278417
4267
04:54
and made tattoo inks with them?
95
282708
1500
04:57
What sorts of things
could we make a tattoo do?
96
285083
2500
05:00
What problems could we solve?
97
288458
2226
05:02
What human limitations could we overcome?
98
290708
2084
05:06
Well, here's one idea:
99
294208
1292
05:08
one of our weaknesses as humans
100
296875
1601
05:10
is that we can't see
ultraviolet, or UV, light.
101
298500
3976
05:14
That's the high-energy part of sunlight
102
302500
1893
05:16
that causes sunburn
and increases our risk of skin cancer.
103
304417
3291
05:20
Many animals and insects
can actually see UV light, but we can't.
104
308875
3417
05:25
If we could, we'd be able to see sunscreen
when it was applied on our skin.
105
313292
3958
05:30
Unfortunately, most of us
don't wear sunscreen,
106
318208
3185
05:33
and those of us who do
107
321417
1601
05:35
can't really tell when it wears off,
because it's invisible.
108
323042
3309
05:38
It's the main reason
we treat over five million cases
109
326375
2643
05:41
of preventable skin cancer
every year in the US alone,
110
329042
3767
05:44
costing our economy
over five billion dollars annually.
111
332833
2917
05:49
So how could we overcome
this human weakness with a tattoo?
112
337167
3041
05:53
Well, if the problem is
that we can't see UV rays,
113
341375
4143
05:57
maybe we can make a tattoo
detect them for us.
114
345542
3017
06:00
So I thought, why don't we take
some microcapsules,
115
348583
3560
06:04
load it up with a UV-sensitive,
color-changing dye,
116
352167
3934
06:08
and make a tattoo ink out of that?
117
356125
1625

06:11
Now, one of the troubles
of being a tattoo technologist
118
359167
4351
06:15
is finding willing test subjects.
119
363542
1976
06:17
(Laughter)
120
365542
1517
06:19
And when it came time
to test this tattoo ink,
121
367083
3476
06:22
I thought it best not to torture
my poor graduate students.
122
370583
3810
06:26
So I decided to tattoo
a couple of spots on my own arm instead.
123
374417
4541
06:31
And It actually worked. Check it out!
124
379875
3184
06:35
I call these tattoos solar freckles
125
383083
2310
06:37
because they're powered by sunshine.
126
385417
2476
06:39
And right now, they're invisible,
127
387917
1601
06:41
but as soon as I expose them
to a UV light, acting as the Sun --
128
389542
3642
06:45
there they are, blue spots.
129
393208
1334
06:47
Now, I'm not wearing
sunscreen in this video,
130
395542
3059
06:50
but if I was, those blue spots
would not appear,
131
398625
3101
06:53
and then when my sunscreen wore off later,
132
401750
2309
06:56
the solar freckles
would reappear in UV light
133
404083
2476
06:58
and I would know that it was time
to reapply sunscreen.
134
406583
3226
07:01
So these tattoos act
as a real-time, naked-eye indicator
135
409833
3935
07:05
of your skin's UV exposure.
136
413792
1708
07:08
And of course,
137
416583
1310
07:09
I think there are lots of really cool,
artistic things you could do
138
417917
4934
07:14
with a color-changing tattoo like this,
139
422875
2375
07:18
but I hope that it will also
help us solve a big problem
140
426292
3934
07:22
in skin protection.
141
430250
2059
07:24
(Applause)
142
432333
5209
07:32
Let me give you another example.
143
440583
2185
07:34
Normal human body temperature
is about 97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit,
144
442792
5142
07:39
and if you fall outside of that range,
145
447958
2310
07:42
you need to seek
medical attention right away.
146
450292
3017
07:45
Now, the problem is that humans
can't detect our own body temperature
147
453333
3726
07:49
without a thermometer.
148
457083
1810
07:50
Sure, you could try the old
hand-on-the-forehead trick,
149
458917
2726
07:53
but there's zero scientific
evidence to back that up.
150
461667
2517
07:56
(Laughter)
151
464208
1768
07:58
So what if we could create
a tattooable thermometer
152
466000
2726
08:00
that you could access anytime?
153
468750
1708
08:03
Well, remember how the solar freckles
used a UV-sensitive dye
154
471333
4268
08:07
inside of the microcapsules
of the tattoo ink?
155
475625
3184
08:10
Well, you could also put
heat-sensitive dyes
156
478833
2601
08:13
inside of microcapsules
157
481458
1768
08:15
and you could make different tattoo inks
158
483250
1934
08:17
that change color
at different temperatures.
159
485208
2351
08:19
Suppose it was 96, 98,
and a hundred degrees Fahrenheit.
160
487583
5084
08:25
If you place those inks side by side,
161
493417
2267
08:27
now you have a temperature scale
162
495708
1893
08:29
tuned to the human body.
163
497625
2000
08:32
In this video, you can see
the different patches of tattoos
164
500500
4643
08:37
disappearing sequentially
165
505167
1351
08:38
as the pigskin we tested them on
166
506542
2184
08:40
is heated up.
167
508750
1726
08:42
So if you were to place a tattoo like this
168
510500
2018
08:44
in a location that was stable
to external temperature fluctuations --
169
512542
4766
08:49
maybe inside of the mouth,
perhaps on the back of the lip? --
170
517332
3043
08:53
then you'd be able to read
your body temperature anytime
171
521500
2643
08:56
by just glancing
at your tattoo in the mirror.
172
524167
2166
08:59
Amazing, right?
173
527042
1250
09:01
(Applause)
174
529750
1309
09:03
Thank you.
175
531083
1310
09:04
(Applause)
176
532417
3559
09:08
Another limitation that we have as humans
177
536000
2184
09:10
is that our skin
doesn't conduct electricity,
178
538208
3268
09:13
and that can be a good thing,
but not necessarily --
179
541500
3059
09:16
(Laughter)
180
544583
1601
09:18
if you have an electronic
biomedical implant,
181
546208
3851
09:22
like a pacemaker for example.
182
550083
2226
09:24
Right now, if you have a pacemaker,
183
552333
2268
09:26
you need surgery every five or 10 years
to replace the battery when it dies.
184
554625
4518
09:31
And wouldn't it be nice if, instead,
185
559167
2559
09:33
we could simply recharge the battery
through a patch of conducting skin?
186
561750
3583
09:38
Well, if you were to try to tackle
that problem with a tattoo,
187
566708
3226
09:41
the first step would be to make a tattoo
that conducts electricity.
188
569958
3893
09:45
So we've been working on
a conducting tattoo ink in my lab.
189
573875
3393
09:49
And right now, we're able to increase
the conductivity of skin over 300-fold
190
577292
5934
09:55
with our conducting tattoo ink.
191
583250
1875

Now, we have a long way to go

because I think that it could open up
a whole new world of possibility

I envision a future
