ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Christopher Soghoian - Privacy researcher and activist
Christopher Soghoian researches and exposes the high-tech surveillance tools that governments use to spy on their own citizens, and he is a champion of digital privacy rights.

Why you should listen

TED Fellow Christopher Soghoian is a champion of digital privacy rights, with a focus on the role that third-party service providers play in enabling governments to monitor citizens. As the principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union, he explores the intersection of federal surveillance and citizen's rights.

Before joining the ACLU, he was the first-ever technologist for the Federal Trade Commision's Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, where he worked on investigations of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Netflix. Soghoian is also the creator of Do Not Track, an anti-tracking device that all major web browsers now use, and his work has been cited in court.

is that the techtech companiesbedrijven have builtgebouwd

is dat de bedrijven die tools

02:55
And so, governmentregering officialsambtenaren
like BritishBritse PrimePrime MinisterMinister DavidDavid CameronCameron,
54
163165
3797
Vertegenwoordigers van de overheid,
zoals de Britse premier David Cameron,
02:58
they believe that all communicationscommunicatie --
emailse-mails, textsteksten, voicestem callscalls --
55
166986
4847
geloven dat alle communicatiemiddelen --
emails, tekstberichten, gesprekken --
03:03
all of these should be
availablebeschikbaar to governmentsoverheden,
56
171857
2588
alles zou beschikbaar moeten
zijn voor overheden,
03:06
and encryptioncodering is makingmaking that difficultmoeilijk.
57
174469
2102
en versleuteling maakt dat moeilijk.
03:09
Now, look -- I'm extremelyuiterst sympatheticsympathiek
to theirhun pointpunt of viewuitzicht.
58
177478
3384
Kijk -- Ik ben het erg eens
met hun standpunt.
03:12
We liveleven in a dangerousgevaarlijk time
in a dangerousgevaarlijk worldwereld-,
59
180886
2532
We leven in een
gevaarlijke tijd en wereld,
en er zijn echt heel erg slechte mensen.
03:15
and there really are badslecht people out there.
60
183442
2000
03:17
There are terroriststerroristen and other
seriousernstig nationalnationaal securityveiligheid threatsbedreigingen
61
185466
3115
Er zijn terroristen en andere
gevaren voor de nationale veiligheid
03:20
that I suspectverdachte we all want
the FBIFBI and the NSANSA to monitormonitor.
62
188605
3977
die we allemaal door de FBI en de NSA
willen laten in de gaten houden.
03:25
But those surveillancetoezicht
featuresKenmerken come at a costkosten.
63
193345
2703
Maar die afluistermogelijkheden
hebben nadelen.
03:29
The reasonreden for that is
64
197357
1155
De reden van de nadelen
03:30
that there is no suchzodanig thing
as a terroristterrorist laptoplaptop,
65
198536
2486
is dat een terroristenlaptop niet bestaat,
03:33
or a drugdrug dealer'sdealer cellcel phonetelefoon.
66
201046
1507
of een drugsdealerstelefoon.
03:34
We all use the samedezelfde
communicationscommunicatie devicesapparaten.
67
202902
2963
We gebruiken allemaal dezelfde
apparaten om te communiceren.
03:38
What that meansmiddelen is that
if the drugdrug dealers'dealers telephonetelefoon callscalls
68
206577
3675
Dat betekent: als de telefoongesprekken
van de drugsdealer
03:42
or the terrorists'terroristen telephonetelefoon callscalls
can be interceptedonderschept,
69
210276
2545
of die van een terrorist
onderschept kunnen worden,
03:44
then so can the restrust uit of oursDe onze, too.
70
212845
1996
dan kunnen de onze
ook onderschept worden.
03:46
And I think we really need to askvragen:
71
214865
1627
En we moeten ons bedenken:
03:48
Should a billionmiljard people
around the worldwereld- be usinggebruik makend van devicesapparaten
72
216516
3127
moeten een miljard mensen
gebruik maken van apparaten,
03:51
that are wiretapwiretap friendlyvriendelijk?
73
219667
1419
die vlot afgeluisterd kunnen worden?
03:55
So the scenarioscenario of hackinghacking of surveillancetoezicht

And really, this getskrijgt to the very problemprobleem

And so for that reasonreden,
I think that it's better

Dit houdt in dat in de toekomst,

encryptioncodering is going to make

Het alternatief houdt in

05:30
And so right now,
you probablywaarschijnlijk have the toolsgereedschap
