ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Billy Graham - Preacher
In his long career as a religious evangelist, the Rev. Billy Graham spoken to millions around the world and served as advisor to US presidents.

Why you should listen

According to his official bio, evangelist Billy Graham took the Bible literally where it says in Mark 16:15, "Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." It's possible that Graham preached the Gospel to more people in live audiences than anyone else in history -- nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories, with hundreds of millions more through television, video, film and webcasts.

Graham wrote some 25 books, and his counsel was sought by many US presidents. He was the first major evangelist to speak behind the Iron Curtain, calling for peace in countries throughout Eastern Europe and in the Soviet Union -- while during the Apartheid era he refused to visit South Africa until its government allowed for desegregated audiences. Through the praise and criticism of a public life that has nearly spanned a century, he held fast to his conviction that faith in Jesus is the only path to salvation.

experiência esclarecedora

I know that we're near the end of this conference,

3000
Eu sei que estamos perto do final dessa conferência,
01:39
and some of you may be wondering
22
87000
2000
01:41
why they have a speaker
23
89000
2000
porque convidaram um palestrante
01:43
from the field of religion.
24
91000
3000
do campo da religião.
01:48
Richard can answer that,
25
96000
2000
Richard pode responder isso,
01:50
because he made that decision.
26
98000
2000
porque ele tomou essa decisão.
01:52
But some years ago I was on an elevator in Philadelphia,
27
100000
3000
01:55
coming down.
28
103000
2000
descendo.
01:57
I was to address a conference
29
105000
2000
Eu iria falar numa conferência
01:59
at a hotel.
30
107000
2000
em um hotel.
02:01
And on that elevator a man said,
31
109000
2000
E naquele elevador um homem disse,
02:03
"I hear Billy Graham is staying in this hotel."
32
111000
3000
"Eu ouvi dizer que Billy Graham está hospedado nesse hotel."
02:06
And another man looked in my direction and said,
33
114000
3000
E outro homem olhou em minha direção e disse.
02:09
"Yes, there he is. He's on this elevator with us."
34
117000
3000
"Sim, ali está ele. Ele está nesse elevador conosco."
02:12
And this man looked me up and down
35
120000
2000
02:14
for about 10 seconds,
36
122000
2000
por cerca de 10 segundos,
02:16
and he said, "My, what an anticlimax!"
37
124000
2000
e ele disse, "Meu Deus, que anticlimax!"
02:18
(Laughter)
38
126000
5000
(Risos)
02:23
I hope
39
131000
3000
Eu espero --
02:27
that you won't feel that these few moments with me
40
135000
2000
02:29
is not a -- is an anticlimax,
41
137000
3000
não é um -- é um anticlimax
02:32
after all these tremendous
42
140000
2000
após todas essas tremendas
02:34
talks that you've heard,
43
142000
3000
palestras que vocês ouviram,
02:37
and addresses, which I intend to listen to every one of them.
44
145000
3000
02:40
But I was
45
148000
3000
Mas eu estava
02:43
on an airplane in the east some years ago,
46
151000
3000
02:47
and the man sitting across the aisle from me
47
155000
3000
e o homem sentado do outro lado do corredor oposto a mim
02:50
was the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina.
48
158000
2000
02:52
His name was John Belk. Some of you will probably know him.
49
160000
3000
O nome dele era John Belk. Alguns de vocês provavelmente o conhecem.
02:56
And there was a drunk man on there,
50
164000
2000
E havia um homem bêbado lá,
02:58
and he got up out of his seat two or three times,
51
166000
2000
03:00
and he was making everybody upset
52
168000
2000
e ele estava incomodando todo mundo
03:02
by what he was trying to do.
53
170000
2000
com o que ele estava fazendo,
03:04
And he was slapping the stewardess
54
172000
2000
ele estava dando tapinhas na aeromoça
03:06
and pinching her as she went by,
55
174000
3000
e a beliscando quando ela passava,
03:09
and everybody was upset with him.
56
177000
4000
e todos estavam chateados com ele.
03:13
And finally, John Belk said,
57
181000
2000
E finalmente, John Belk disse,
03:15
"Do you know who's sitting here?"
58
183000
3000
"Você sabe quem é que está sentado aqui?"
03:18
And the man said, "No, who?"
59
186000
2000
E o homem disse, "Não, quem?"
03:20
He said, "It's Billy Graham,
60
188000
2000
Ele disse, "É Billy Graham,
03:22
the preacher."
61
190000
2000
o pregador."
03:24
He said, "You don't say!"
62
192000
2000
O homem disse, "Não me diga!"
03:26
And he turned to me, and he said, "Put her there!"
63
194000
3000
03:29
He said, "Your sermons have certainly helped me."
64
197000
3000
Ele disse, "Seus sermões realmente me ajudaram."
03:32
(Laughter)
65
200000
8000
(Risos)
03:40
And I suppose that that's true
66
208000
2000
E eu suponho que isso seja verdade
03:42
with thousands of people.
67
210000
2000
para milhares de pessoas.
03:44
(Laughter)
68
212000
7000
(Risos)
03:51
I know that as you have been peering into the future,
69
219000
3000
03:55
and as we've heard some of it here tonight,
70
223000
3000
03:59
I would like to live in that age
71
227000
3000
eu gostaria de viver nessa época
04:02
and see what is going to be.
72
230000
3000
e ver como seria.
04:05
But I won't,
73
233000
2000
Mas eu não irei,
04:07
because I'm 80 years old. This is my eightieth year,
74
235000
3000
04:10
and I know that my time is brief.
75
238000
3000
e eu sei que meu tempo é curto.
04:15
I have phlebitis at the moment, in both legs,
76
243000
3000
Eu tenho flebite em ambas as pernas no momento,
04:18
and that's the reason that I had to have a little help in getting up here,
77
246000
3000
04:21
because I have Parkinson's disease
78
249000
1000
porque eu tenho o mal de Parkinson,
04:22
in addition to that,
79
250000
2000
adicionado a isso,
04:24
and some other problems that I won't talk about.
80
252000
3000
04:27
(Laughter)
81
255000
2000
(Risos)
04:29
But this is not the first time
82
257000
2000
Mas esta não é a primeira vez
04:31
that we've had a technological revolution.
83
259000
3000
que tivemos uma revolução tecnológica.
04:36
We've had others.
84
264000
2000
Nós tivemos outras.
04:38
And there's one that I want to talk about.
85
266000
3000
04:42
In one generation,
86
270000
2000
Em uma geração,
04:44
the nation of the people of Israel
87
272000
3000
a nação do povo de Israel
04:47
had a tremendous and dramatic change
88
275000
3000
teve uma mudança tremenda e dramática
04:51
that made them a great power in the Near East.
89
279000
3000
04:55
A man by the name of David
90
283000
2000
Um homem chamado Davi
04:57
came to the throne,
91
285000
2000
subiu ao trono,
04:59
and King David became one of the great leaders
92
287000
3000
05:02
of his generation.
93
290000
3000
da sua geração.
05:07
He was a man of tremendous leadership.
94
295000
2000
Ele era um homem de grande liderança.
05:10
He had the favor of God with him.
95
298000
3000
05:13
He was a brilliant poet,
96
301000
3000
Ele era um brilhante poeta,
05:17
philosopher, writer, soldier --
97
305000
3000
filósofo, escritor, soldado,
05:21
with strategies in battle and conflict
98
309000
3000
com estratégias em combate e conflito
05:24
that people study even today.
99
312000
2000
até hoje estudadas por nós.
05:27
But about two centuries before David,
100
315000
4000
05:31
the Hittites
101
319000
2000
os Hititas
05:33
had discovered the secret
102
321000
2000
haviam descoberto o segredo
05:35
of smelting and processing of iron,
103
323000
3000
da fundição e processamento do ferro,
05:39
and, slowly, that skill spread.
104
327000
2000
e lentamente, essa técnica se espalhou.
05:41
But they wouldn't allow the Israelis
105
329000
3000
Mas eles não permitiam que os Israelitas
05:44
to look into it, or to have any.
106
332000
3000
aprendessem ou tivessem qualquer acesso.
05:48
But David changed all of that,
107
336000
2000
Mas o Rei Davi mudou tudo isso
05:50
and he introduced the Iron Age
108
338000
2000
e ele introduziu a Idade do Ferro
05:52
to Israel.
109
340000
2000
a Israel.
05:54
And the Bible says that David laid up great stores of iron,
110
342000
3000
05:58
and which archaeologists have found,
111
346000
2000
sobre o quais arqueólogos descobriram,
06:00
that in present-day Palestine,
112
348000
2000
na Palestina dos dias atuais
06:02
there are evidences of that generation.
113
350000
3000
existir evidências daquela geração.
06:06
Now, instead of crude tools
114
354000
3000
Agora, ao invés de ferramentas rudimentares
06:09
made of sticks and stones,
115
357000
3000
feitas de madeira e pedra,
06:12
Israel now had iron plows,
116
360000
3000
Israel agora tinha arados de ferro
06:15
and sickles, and hoes
117
363000
2000
e foices e enxadas,
06:17
and military weapons.
118
365000
3000
e armas militares.
06:20
And in the course of one generation,
119
368000
2000
E no curso de uma geração,
06:23
Israel was completely changed.
120
371000
3000
Israel foi completamente transformada.
06:26
The introduction of iron, in some ways,
121
374000
3000
A introdução do ferro, de certa forma,
06:29
had an impact
122
377000
3000
teve um impacto
06:32
a little bit like the microchip
123
380000
2000
06:34
has had on our generation.
124
382000
2000
teve na nossa geração.
06:41
And
125
389000
2000
E
06:43
David found
126
391000
2000
Davi descobriu
06:45
that there were many problems that technology could not solve.
127
393000
3000
06:49
There were many problems still left.
128
397000
3000
Ainda havia muitos problemas sem solução.
06:54
And they're still with us, and you haven't solved them,
129
402000
3000
06:57
and I haven't heard anybody here speak to that.
130
405000
3000
07:01
How do we solve these three problems
131
409000
2000
Como solucionamos esses três problemas
07:03
that I'd like to mention?
132
411000
2000
que eu gostaria de mencionar?
07:06
The first one that David saw
133
414000
2000
O primeiro que Davi viu
07:08
was human evil.
134
416000
2000
era o mal do ser humano.
07:10
Where does it come from?
135
418000
3000
De onde ele vem?
07:13
How do we solve it?
136
421000
2000
Como resolvemos isso?
07:15
Over again and again
137
423000
2000
Inúmeras vezes
07:17
in the Psalms,
138
425000
2000
no livro dos Salmos,
07:19
which Gladstone said was the greatest book in the world,
139
427000
3000
07:24
David describes the evils of the human race.
140
432000
3000
Davi descreve o mal da raça humana.
07:27
And yet he says,
141
435000
2000
E ainda assim ele diz,
07:29
"He restores my soul."
142
437000
3000
"Ele restaura minha alma."
07:32
Have you ever thought about what a contradiction we are?
143
440000
3000
07:35
On one hand, we can probe the deepest secrets of the universe
144
443000
4000
07:39
and dramatically push back the frontiers of technology,
145
447000
4000
e dramaticamente alargar as fronteiras da tecnologia,
07:43
as this conference vividly demonstrates.
146
451000
4000
como essa conferência demonstra claramente.
07:48
We've seen under the sea,
147
456000
2000
Nós já vimos o fundo do oceano,
07:50
three miles down,
148
458000
2000
três milhas abaixo,
07:52
or galaxies hundreds of billions of years
149
460000
3000
07:55
out in the future.
150
463000
2000
luz no futuro.
07:58
But on the other hand,
151
466000
2000
Mas por outro lado,
08:01
something is wrong.
152
469000
2000
algo está errado.
08:05
Our battleships,
153
473000
2000
Nossos navios de guerra,
08:07
our soldiers,
154
475000
2000
nossos soldados,
08:09
are on a frontier now,
155
477000
2000
estão numa fronteira agora
08:11
almost ready to go to war
156
479000
2000
quase prestes a entrar em guerra
08:13
with Iraq.
157
481000
2000
com o Iraque.
08:15
Now, what causes this?
158
483000
2000
Agora, o que causa isso?
08:17
Why do we have these wars in every generation,
159
485000
3000
Porque temos essas guerras a cada geração,
08:20
and in every part of the world?
160
488000

Ele disse, "É mais fácil desnaturar plutônio

pensaram sobre isso

O Rei Davi disse

You see, the Bible teaches
227
674000
3000
Vejam vocês, a Bíblia ensina
11:29
that we're more than a body and a mind.
228
677000
3000
11:33
We are a soul.
229
681000
3000
Nós somos uma alma.
11:36
And there's something inside of us

684000
3000
E existe algo dentro de nós
11:39
that is beyond our understanding.

que vai além do nosso entendimento.

por Deus ou por algo mais
11:48
than we find in technology.

Your soul is that part of you that

yearns for meaning in life,

701000
2000
anseia por significado na vida,
11:55
and which seeks for something beyond this life.
237
703000
3000
11:58
It's the part of you that yearns, really, for God.
238
706000
2000

I find [that] young people all over the world
239
708000
2000
12:02
are searching for something.
240
710000
3000
estão buscando por algo.
12:05
They don't know what it is. I speak at many universities,
241
713000
3000
Eles não sabem o que é. Eu falo em muitas universidades,
12:08
and I have many questions and answer periods, and
242
716000
3000
e eu tenho muitos períodos de perguntas e respostas, e
12:11
whether it's Cambridge, or Harvard,
243
719000
2000
seja em Cambridge ou Harvard
12:13
or Oxford --
244
721000
2000
ou Oxford --
12:15
I've spoken at all of those universities.
245
723000
2000
Eu falei em todas essas universidades.
12:17
I'm going to Harvard in about three or four --
246
725000
2000
12:19
no, it's about two months from now --
247
727000
2000
12:21
to give a lecture.
248
729000
2000
para dar uma palestra.
12:23
And I'll be asked the same questions that I was asked
249
731000
2000
E me farão as mesmas perguntas que me fizeram
12:25
the last few times I've been there.
250
733000
3000
nas últimas vezes que eu estive lá.
12:28
And it'll be on
251
736000
2000
E elas serão sobre
12:30
these questions:
252
738000
2000
essas poucas questões:
12:32
where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?
253
740000
3000
De onde eu vim? Porque eu estou aqui? Para onde eu irei?
12:35
What's life all about? Why am I here?
254
743000
3000
Qual o sentido da vida? Porque eu estou aqui?

3000
"Quando você vê tudo o que acontece no mundo da ciência,
12:50
and in the working of the universe,
259
758000
2000
e no funcionamento do universo,
12:52
you cannot deny that there's a captain on the bridge."
260
760000
3000
12:56
I remember once,
261
764000
2000
Eu me lembro uma vez,
12:58
I sat beside Mrs. Gorbachev
262
766000
2000
eu me sentei ao lado da Sra.Gorbachev
13:00
at a White House dinner.
263
768000
2000
num jantar na Casa Branca.
13:03
I went to Ambassador Dobrynin, whom I knew very well.
264
771000
2000
13:05
And I'd been to Russia several times under the Communists,
265
773000
4000
13:09
and they'd given me marvelous freedom that I didn't expect.
266
777000
4000
13:15
And I knew Mr. Dobrynin very well,
267
783000
2000
E eu conhecia o Sr. Dobrynin muito bem,
13:17
and I said,
268
785000
2000
e eu disse,
13:19
"I'm going to sit beside Mrs. Gorbachev tonight.
269
787000
3000
"Eu vou me sentar ao lado da Sra. Gorbachev hoje a noite.
13:22
What shall I talk to her about?"
270
790000
2000
13:24
And he surprised me with the answer.
271
792000
2000
E ele me surpreendeu com a resposta.
13:26
He said, "Talk to her about religion and philosophy.
272
794000
3000
13:29
That's what she's really interested in."
273
797000
3000
13:32
I was a little bit surprised, but that evening
274
800000
3000
13:35
that's what we talked about,
275
803000
2000
foi sobre isso que conversamos,
13:37
and it was a stimulating conversation.
276
805000
2000
e foi uma conversa estimulante,
13:39
And afterward, she said,
277
807000
2000
e depois ela disse,
13:41
"You know, I'm an atheist,
278
809000
2000
"O senhor sabe, eu sou uma ateísta,
13:43
but I know that there's something up there
279
811000
2000
13:45
higher than we are."
280
813000
3000
maior do que nós."

The second problem
281
816000
2000
O segundo problema
13:50
that King David realized he could not solve
282
818000
3000
13:54
was the problem of human suffering.
283
822000
2000
era o problema do sofrimento humano.
13:56
Writing the oldest book in the world was Job,
284
824000
3000
13:59
and he said,
285
827000
2000
e ele disse,
14:01
"Man is born unto trouble as the sparks fly upward."
286
829000
3000
"Mas o homem nasce para a tribulação, como as faíscas se levantam para voar."
14:05
Yes, to be sure, science has done much to push back
287
833000
3000
14:08
certain types of human suffering.
288
836000
3000
certos tipos de sofrimento humano.
14:11
But I'm --
289
839000
2000
Mas eu --
14:13
in a few months, I'll be 80 years of age.
290
841000
3000
14:16
I admit that I'm very grateful
291
844000
2000
Eu admito que sou grato
14:18
for all the medical advances
292
846000
2000
por todos os avanços médicos
14:20
that have kept me in relatively good health
293
848000
2000
que me mantiveram com saúde relativamente boa
14:22
all these years.
294
850000
2000
todos esses anos.
14:24
My doctors at the Mayo Clinic urged me
295
852000
2000
Meus médicos na clínica Mayo me desencorajaram
14:26
not to take this trip out here to this -- to be here.
296
854000
3000
14:30
I haven't given a talk in nearly four months.
297
858000
3000
14:35
And when you speak as much as I do,
298
863000
2000
E quando você fala tanto quanto eu,
14:37
three or four times a day,
299
865000
2000
de três a quatro vezes por dia,
14:39
you get rusty.
300
867000
2000
você fica enferrujado.
14:41
That's the reason I'm using this podium
301
869000
2000
14:43
and using these notes.
302
871000
3000
e usando essas notas.
14:46
Every time you ever hear me on the television or somewhere,
303
874000
3000
14:49
I'm ad-libbing.
304
877000
2000
eu estou improvisando.
14:51
I'm not reading. I never read an address.
305
879000
3000
Eu não estou lendo. Eu nunca leio um pronunciamento.
14:55
I never read a speech or a talk or a lecture.
306
883000
2000
14:59
I talk ad lib.
307
887000
2000
eu falo de improviso.
15:01
But tonight, I've
308
889000
2000
Mas essa noite eu
15:03
got some notes here so that if
309
891000
2000
tenho algumas notas aqui caso
15:05
I begin to forget,
310
893000
2000
eu comece a esquecer,
15:07
which I do sometimes,
311
895000
3000
o que acontece as vezes,
15:10
I've got something I can turn to.
312
898000
3000
e eu tenho algo onde eu possa olhar.
15:13
But even here among us,
313
901000
2000
Mas mesmo aqui entre nós,
15:17
most --
314
905000
2000
em muitas --
15:21
in the most advanced society in the world,
315
909000
3000
nas sociedades mais avançadas do mundo,
15:24
we have poverty.
316
912000
2000
nós temos pobreza.
15:26
We have families that self-destruct,
317
914000
3000
Nós temos famílias que se destroem,
15:29
friends that betray us.
318
917000
2000
amigos que nos traem.
15:31
Unbearable psychological pressures bear down on us.
319
919000
3000
Pressões psicológicas insuportáveis pesam sobre nós.
15:34
I've never met a person in the world
320
922000
2000
Eu nunca encontrei uma pessoa no mundo
15:36
that didn't have a problem
321
924000
2000
que não tivesse um problema
15:38
or a worry.
322
926000
2000
ou uma preocupação.
15:40
Why do we suffer? It's an age-old question
323
928000
3000
Porque sofremos? É uma pergunta antiga
15:43
that we haven't answered.
324
931000
2000
que nós não respondemos.
15:45
Yet David again and again said
325
933000
3000
No entanto Davi mais uma vez disse
15:49
that he would turn to God.
326
937000
3000
que ele iria se voltar para Deus.
15:52
He said, "The Lord is my shepherd."
327
940000
3000
Ele disse, "O Senhor é o meu pastor."
15:56
The final problem that David knew he could not solve
328
944000
4000
16:00
was death.
329
948000
2000
era a morte.
16:03
Many commentators have said that death
330
951000
2000
Muitos comentaristas dizem que a morte
16:05
is the forbidden subject of our generation.
331
953000
3000
é o assunto proibido da nossa geração.
16:08
Most people live as if
332
956000
3000
A maioria das pessoas vivem como
16:11
they're never going to die.
333
959000
2000
se elas nunca fossem morrer.
16:13
Technology projects the myth
334
961000
3000
A tecnologia projeta o mito
16:16
of control over our mortality.
335
964000
3000
do controle sobre nossa mortalidade.
16:20
We see people on our screens.
336
968000
2000
16:22
Marilyn Monroe is just as beautiful on the screen
337
970000
2000
Marilyn Monroe é tão bonita nas telas
16:24
as she was in person,
338
972000
2000
como ela era pessoalmente,
16:26
and our -- many young people think she's still alive.
339
974000
3000
16:30
They don't know that she's dead.
340
978000
2000
Eles não sabem que ela está morta.
16:32
Or Clark Gable, or whoever it is.
341
980000
2000
16:34
The old stars, they come to life.
342
982000
4000
As velhas estrelas. Elas voltam a viver.
16:38
And they're --
343
986000
2000
E elas são --
16:41
they're just as great on that screen as they were in person.
344
989000
3000
16:46
But death is inevitable.
345
994000
2000
Mas a morte é inevitável.
16:48
I spoke some time ago to
346
996000
3000
16:51
a joint session of Congress, last year.
347
999000
3000
sessão adjunta do Congresso, ano passado.
16:55
And we were meeting in that room,
348
1003000
2000
E nós nos reunimos naquela sala,
16:58
the statue room.
349
1006000
2000
a sala das estátuas --
17:00
About 300 of them were there.
350
1008000
2000
mais ou menos 300 delas estavam lá.
17:03
And I said, "There's one thing that we have in common in this room,
351
1011000
4000
17:07
all of us together, whether Republican or Democrat,
352
1015000
2000
todos nós juntos, Republicanos ou Democratas,
17:10
or whoever."
353
1018000
2000
ou qualquer outro."
17:12
I said, "We're all going to die.
354
1020000
2000
Eu disse, "Todos nós iremos morrer."
17:14
And we have that in common with all these great men of the past
355
1022000
3000
17:17
that are staring down at us."
356
1025000
3000
que estão nos olhando do alto.
17:21
And it's often difficult for young people
357
1029000
2000
E é frequentemente difícil para os jovens
17:23
to understand that.
358
1031000
2000
entenderem isso.
17:26
It's difficult for them to understand that they're going to die.
359
1034000
3000
17:30
As the ancient writer of Ecclesiastes wrote,
360
1038000
4000
17:34
he said, there's every activity under heaven.
361
1042000
3000
17:38
There's a time to be born,
362
1046000
3000
Há tempo de nascer,
17:41
and there's a time to die.
363
1049000
2000
e tempo de morrer.
17:43
I've stood at the deathbed
364
1051000
3000
Eu estive junto ao leito de morte
17:46
of several famous people,
365
1054000
2000
de muitas pessoas famosas
17:48
whom you would know.
366
1056000
2000
as quais vocês reconheceriam.
17:50
I've talked to them.
367
1058000
2000
Eu falei com elas.
17:52
I've seen them in those agonizing moments
368
1060000
2000
17:54
when they were scared to death.
369
1062000
3000
quando elas estavam morrendo de medo.
17:57
And yet, a few years earlier,
370
1065000
3000
No entanto, alguns anos antes,
18:01
death never crossed their mind.
371
1069000
2000
a morte nunca havia passado pelas suas cabeças.
18:03
I talked to a woman this past week
372
1071000
3000
Eu falei com uma mulher semana passada
18:07
whose father
373
1075000
2000
cujo pai
18:10
was a famous doctor.
374
1078000
2000
era um médico famoso.
18:13
She said he never thought of God, never talked about God,
375
1081000
3000
18:16
didn't believe in God. He was an atheist.
376
1084000
3000
e não acreditava em Deus. Ele era ateu.
18:21
But she said,
377
1089000
2000
Mas ele disse,
18:23
as he came to die,
378
1091000
2000
quando ele estava para morrer,
18:25
he sat up on the side of the bed one day,
379
1093000
4000
ele sentou-se no lado da cama um dia,
18:29
and he asked the nurse if he could see the chaplain.
380
1097000
3000
e perguntou a enfermeira se ele poderia ver o capelão.
18:32
And he said, for the first time in his life
381
1100000
2000
18:34
he'd thought about the inevitable,
382
1102000
3000
que ele iria pensar sobre o inevitável,
18:39
and about God.
383
1107000
2000
e sobre Deus.
18:41
Was there a God?
384
1109000
2000
Existiria um Deus?
18:45
A few years ago, a university student asked me,
385
1113000
3000
Há alguns anos atrás um estudante universitário me perguntou,
18:49
"What is the greatest surprise in your life?"
386
1117000
3000
"Qual é a maior surpresa da sua vida?"
18:52
And I said, "The greatest surprise in my life
387
1120000
2000
E eu disse, a maior surpresa da minha vida
18:54
is the brevity of life.
388
1122000
3000
é a brevidade da vida.
18:57
It passes so fast."
389
1125000
3000
Ela passa tão rápido.
19:02
But it does not need to have to be that way.
390
1130000
2000
19:04
Wernher von Braun,
391
1132000
3000
Werner von Braun,
19:07
in the aftermath of World War II concluded, quote:
392
1135000
3000
19:10
"science and religion are not antagonists.
393
1138000
3000
"Ciência e religião não são antagônicas.
19:13
On the contrary, they're sisters."
394
1141000
3000
Pelo contrário, elas são irmãs."
19:17
He put it on a personal basis.
395
1145000
2000
Ele colocou isso a nível pessoal.
19:19
I knew Dr. von Braun very well.
396
1147000
3000
Eu conhecia bem o Dr. von Braun.
19:22
And he said, "Speaking for myself,
397
1150000
2000
E ele disse, "Falando por mim mesmo,
19:24
I can only say that the grandeur of the cosmos
398
1152000
3000
eu posso apenas dizer que a grandiosidade do cosmos
19:27
serves only to confirm
399
1155000
2000
serve apenas para confirmar
19:29
a belief in the certainty of a creator."
400
1157000
3000
uma crença na certeza de um criador."
19:32
He also said,
401
1160000
2000
Ele também disse,
19:34
"In our search to know God,
402
1162000
2000
"Em nossa busca para conhecer a Deus,
19:36
I've come to believe that the life of Jesus Christ
403
1164000
3000
19:40
should be the focus of our efforts and inspiration.
404
1168000
3000
19:44
The reality of this life and His resurrection
405
1172000
2000
A realidade dessa vida e da ressurreição dEle
19:46
is the hope of mankind."
406
1174000
3000
é a esperança da humanidade."
19:49
I've done a lot of speaking in Germany
407
1177000
2000
Eu falei muitas vezes na Alemanha
19:51
and in France, and in different parts of the world --
408
1179000
3000
19:54
105 countries it's been my privilege to speak in.
409
1182000
3000
105 países onde tive o privilégio de falar.
19:59
And I was invited one day to visit
410
1187000
3000
20:03
Chancellor Adenauer,
411
1191000
2000
Chanceler Adenauer
20:05
who was looked upon as sort of the founder of modern Germany,
412
1193000
3000
20:10
since the war.
413
1198000
2000
desde a guerra.
20:12
And he once -- and he said to me,
414
1200000
2000
E ele uma vez -- e ele disse para min,
20:14
he said, "Young man." He said,
415
1202000
2000
ele disse, "Jovem," ele disse,
20:16
"Do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ?"
416
1204000
3000
"Você acredita na ressurreição de Jesus Cristo?"
20:20
And I said, "Sir, I do."
417
1208000
2000
E eu disse. "Senhor, eu acredito."
20:22
He said, "So do I."
418
1210000
2000
Ele disse, "Eu também."
20:24
He said, "When I leave office,
419
1212000
2000
Ele disse, "Quando eu der baixa,
20:26
I'm going to spend my time writing a book
420
1214000
3000
eu vou gastar meu tempo escrevendo um livro
20:29
on why Jesus Christ rose again,
421
1217000
3000
sobre porque Jesus Cristo ressuscitou,
20:32
and why it's so important to believe that."
422
1220000
3000
e porque é tão importante acreditar nisso."
20:38
In one of his plays,
423
1226000
2000
Em uma de suas peças,
20:40
Alexander Solzhenitsyn
424
1228000
2000
Alexander Solzhenitsyn
20:43
depicts a man dying,
425
1231000
2000
descreve um homem morrendo,
20:45
who says to those gathered around his bed,
426
1233000
3000
20:48
"The moment when it's terrible to feel regret
427
1236000
2000
"O momento que é terrível para sentir arrependimento
20:50
is when one is dying."
428
1238000
3000
é quando alguém está morrendo."
20:53
How should one live in order not to feel regret when one is dying?
429
1241000
4000
20:58
Blaise Pascal
430
1246000
2000
Blaise Pascal
21:00
asked exactly that question
431
1248000
2000
fez exatamente essa pergunta
21:02
in seventeenth-century France.
432
1250000
2000
na França do século 17.
21:04
Pascal has been called the architect
433
1252000
2000
Pascal foi chamado de o arquiteto
21:06
of modern civilization.
434
1254000
2000
da civilização moderna.
21:09
He was a brilliant scientist
435
1257000
2000
Ele era um cientista brilhante
21:11
at the frontiers of mathematics,
436
1259000
2000
nas fronteiras da matemática,
21:13
even as a teenager.
437
1261000
2000
mesmo quando adolescente.
21:16
He is viewed by many as the founder of the probability theory,
438
1264000
3000
21:20
and a creator of the first model of a computer.
439
1268000
4000
21:24
And of course, you are all familiar with
440
1272000
2000
21:26
the computer language named for him.
441
1274000
3000
21:29
Pascal explored in depth our human dilemmas
442
1277000
2000
Pascal explorou em profundidade nossos dilemas humanos
21:31
of evil, suffering and death.
443
1279000
4000
do mal, sofrimento e morte.
21:35
He was astounded
444
1283000
3000
Ele estava espantado
21:38
at the phenomenon we've been considering:
445
1286000
3000
com o fenômeno que temos considerado:
21:41
that people can achieve extraordinary heights
446
1289000
2000
que as pessoas podem alcançar graus extraordinários
21:43
in science, the arts and human enterprise,
447
1291000
3000
na ciência, artes e empreendimentos humanos,
21:46
yet they also are full of anger, hypocrisy
448
1294000
3000
21:49
and have -- and self-hatreds.
449
1297000
3000
e têm -- ódio de si mesmas.
21:53
Pascal saw us as a remarkable mixture
450
1301000
2000
Pascal nos via como uma mistura impressionante
21:55
of genius and self-delusion.
451
1303000
3000
de gênio e engano próprio.
21:58
On November 23,
452
1306000
2000
Em 23 de novembro,
22:00
1654,
453
1308000
2000
1654,
22:03
Pascal had a profound religious experience.
454
1311000
3000
Pascal teve uma experiência religiosa profunda.
22:07
He wrote in his journal these words:
455
1315000
3000
Ele escreveu essas palavras no seu diário:
22:10
"I submit myself,
456
1318000
2000
"Eu me submeto,
22:12
absolutely,
457
1320000
2000
completamente,
22:15
to Jesus Christ, my redeemer."
458
1323000
3000
a Jesus Cristo meu Redentor,"
22:18
A French historian said,
459
1326000
2000
Um historiador Frances disse,
22:20
two centuries later,
460
1328000
3000
dois séculos mais tarde,
22:23
"Seldom has so mighty an intellect
461
1331000
2000
"Raramente um intelecto tão grande
22:26
submitted with such humility
462
1334000
3000
se submeteu com tanta humildade
22:29
to the authority of Jesus Christ."
463
1337000
3000
a autoridade de Jesus Cristo."
22:33
Pascal came to believe not only the love and the grace of God
464
1341000
3000
22:36
could bring us back into harmony,
465
1344000
3000
podia nos trazer de volta a harmonia,
22:41
but he believed
466
1349000
2000
mas ele creu
22:43
that his own sins and failures could be forgiven,
467
1351000
3000
22:46
and that when he died he would go to a place called heaven.
468
1354000
3000
22:51
He experienced it in a way that went beyond
469
1359000
2000
22:53
scientific observation and reason.
470
1361000
2000
da observação científica e da razão.
22:55
It was he who penned the well-known words,
471
1363000
3000
Foi ele quem escreveu o tão conhecido ditado,
22:58
"The heart has its reasons,
472
1366000
2000
"O coração tem razões
23:01
which reason knows not of."
473
1369000
3000
que a própria razão desconhece."
23:04
Equally well known is Pascal's Wager.
474
1372000
3000
Igualmente bem conhecida é a Aposta de Pascal.
23:07
Essentially, he said this: "if you bet on God,
475
1375000
3000
Essencialmente ele disse isto: "Se você aposta em Deus,
23:11
and open yourself to his love,
476
1379000
2000
e se abre para o Seu amor,
23:13
you lose nothing, even if you're wrong.
477
1381000
3000
23:16
But if instead you bet that there is no God,
478
1384000
3000
23:20
then you can lose it all, in this life and the life to come."
479
1388000
3000
23:25
For Pascal, scientific knowledge
480
1393000
2000
Para Pascal, conhecimento científico
23:27
paled beside the knowledge of God.
481
1395000
3000
se empalidecia diante do conhecimento de Deus.
23:31
The knowledge of God was far beyond
