ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jose Miguel Sokoloff - Anti-guerrilla creative
Ad exec Jose Miguel Sokoloff has led a multi-year marketing campaign that's helped Colombian guerrillas realize that they are wanted back home.

Why you should listen
Jose Miguel Sokoloff knows what it's like to go into a jungle to make a commercial in a Black Hawk helicopter surrounded by soldiers with machine guns. In the last few years he has planned and realized pro-bono ad campaigns on behalf of the Ministry of Defense against the guerrilla war in Colombia -- to persuade FARC guerrillas to demoblize.

Realizing that a guerrillero is as much a prisoner of his organization as are his hostages, Sokoloff and his team played on the promise of freedom. At Christmas 2010, his agency, Lowe-SSP3 Colombia, placed nine decorated holiday trees in the jungle near a banner ad that read: "If Christmas can come to the jungle, you can come home. Demobilize." It won gold at Cannes Lions -- but the most important prize was that it succeeded in its intent, creating a spike in demobilization rates.

The following year the agency planned a poetic campaign called "Rivers of Light" (Operación Ríos de Luz), which floated a raft of glowing plastic balls, filled with gifts and messages from family, down rivers that the revolutionaries typically travel. Christmas 2012's campaign, "Operation Bethlehem," lit up wayfinding "stars" over local villages, offering defectors a route back.

Meanwhile, Sokoloff's agency also handles large global consumer clients like Unilever, as well as the Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

06:52
But what I can tell you is that
our radiorádio strategyestratégia was workingtrabalhando.
124
400206
7971
Mas o que vos posso dizer é que
a nossa estratégia da rádio funcionava.
07:00
The problemproblema is that it was workingtrabalhando
in the lowermais baixo ranksfileiras of the guerrillaguerrilha.
125
408177
3684
O problema é que funcionava
com as baixas patentes da guerrilha,
mas não com os comandantes,
as pessoas mais difíceis de substituir.
07:04
It was not workingtrabalhando with the commanderscomandantes,
126
411861
2363
07:06
the people that are
more difficultdifícil to replacesubstituir,
127
414224
2211
07:08
because you can easilyfacilmente recruitrecruta
but you can't get the olderMais velho commanderscomandantes.
128
416435
5578
Porque é fácil recrutar, mas não é fácil
encontrar comandantes mais velhos.
07:14
So we thought, well,
we'llbem use the samemesmo strategyestratégia.
129
422013
3683
Então pensámos:
Usamos a mesma estratégia.
07:17
We'llNós vamos have commanderscomandantes
talkingfalando to commanderscomandantes.
130
425696
2566
Pomos comandantes
a falar com os comandantes.
E chegámos mesmo
a pedir a ex-comandantes da guerrilha
07:20
And we even wentfoi as farlonge
as askingPerguntando ex-commandersex-comandantes of the guerrillaguerrilha
131
428262
3776
para irem em helicópteros,
com microfones,
07:24
to flymosca on helicoptershelicópteros with microphonesmicrofones
132
432038
2735
07:26
tellingdizendo the people that
used to fightluta with them,
133
434773
3461
dizer àqueles que antes
combatiam a seu lado:
07:30
"There is a better life out there,"
134
438234
2113
"Há uma vida melhor cá fora. Estou bem."
"A guerrilha não vale a pena.", etc.
07:32
"I'm doing good,"
"This is not worthque vale a pena it," etcetc..
135
440347
2577
07:35
But, as you can all imagineImagine,
it was very easyfácil to counteractcontrariar,
136
442924
5106
Mas, como podem imaginar,
era muito fácil de contrapor,
07:40
because what was
the guerrillaguerrilha going to say?
137
448030
2553
porque os guerrilheiros diziam:
07:42
"Yeah, right, if he doesn't do that,
he's going to get killedmorto."
138
450583
3208
"Pois, se ele não disser
essas coisas, matam-no."
07:45
So it was easyfácil, so we were
suddenlyDe repente left with nothing,
139
453791
4065
Ficámos sem nada
porque os guerrilheiros
passavam a mensagem
07:50
because the guerrillaguerrilha

140
457856
2279
07:52
that all of those things are donefeito
141

de que todas aquelas coisas eram ditas,
07:55
because if they don't do it,
they're in dangerperigo.
142
462846
5502
porque eram obrigados.
Alguém na nossa equipa, alguém brilhante,
veio ter connosco e disse:

143

08:16

148

174

09:49
So riversrios are the highwaysrodovias of the jungleselva,
175
577351
3387
Os rios são as autoestradas da selva.
Foi algo que aprendemos.
09:52

176

2197
A maioria do recrutamento era feito

10:49
Then cameveio the peacePaz processprocesso,

Depois veio o processo de paz.
10:53

Alterou-se porque eram levados a pensar:

And theirdeles fearsmedos completelycompletamente changedmudou,

Os seus medos mudaram completamente.
