ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jose Miguel Sokoloff - Anti-guerrilla creative
Ad exec Jose Miguel Sokoloff has led a multi-year marketing campaign that's helped Colombian guerrillas realize that they are wanted back home.

Why you should listen
Jose Miguel Sokoloff knows what it's like to go into a jungle to make a commercial in a Black Hawk helicopter surrounded by soldiers with machine guns. In the last few years he has planned and realized pro-bono ad campaigns on behalf of the Ministry of Defense against the guerrilla war in Colombia -- to persuade FARC guerrillas to demoblize.

Realizing that a guerrillero is as much a prisoner of his organization as are his hostages, Sokoloff and his team played on the promise of freedom. At Christmas 2010, his agency, Lowe-SSP3 Colombia, placed nine decorated holiday trees in the jungle near a banner ad that read: "If Christmas can come to the jungle, you can come home. Demobilize." It won gold at Cannes Lions -- but the most important prize was that it succeeded in its intent, creating a spike in demobilization rates.

The following year the agency planned a poetic campaign called "Rivers of Light" (Operación Ríos de Luz), which floated a raft of glowing plastic balls, filled with gifts and messages from family, down rivers that the revolutionaries typically travel. Christmas 2012's campaign, "Operation Bethlehem," lit up wayfinding "stars" over local villages, offering defectors a route back.

Meanwhile, Sokoloff's agency also handles large global consumer clients like Unilever, as well as the Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

03:01
FourPatru yearsani before the treescopaci,
we were approachedabordat by the governmentGuvern

03:12
The governmentGuvern had a militarymilitar strategystrategie,
53

2452
Guvernul avea strategie militară,
avea o strategie legală,
03:14
it had a legallegal strategystrategie,
54
182534
1328
03:16
it had a politicalpolitic strategystrategie, but it said,
55

03:18
"We don't really have

so we decideda decis to

115

2961
06:29
The only thing that was
in his mindminte was to see her.
116
376913
3526
Numai la asta se gândea, s-o vadă.
06:32
The storypoveste was, they did meetîntâlni.
117
380439
2917
Până la urmă s-au revăzut.
Știu că vă întrebați dacă s-au întâlnit.
Da, s-au întâlnit.
06:35
I know you're wonderingîntrebându- if they did meetîntâlni.
118
383356
2531
06:38
They did meetîntâlni.
119
385887
1249
Ea a fost recrutată la 15 ani
și a plecat când avea 17,
06:39
She had been recruitedrecrutat when she was 15,
and she left when she was 17,
120
387136
4003
06:43
so there were a lot
of other complicationscomplicații,
121
391139
2060
a fost foarte complicat,
dar în final s-au întâlnit.
06:45
but they did eventuallyîn cele din urmă meetîntâlni.
122
393199
1732
Nu știu dacă mai sunt împreună,
06:47
I don't know if they're togetherîmpreună now,
but I can find out. (LaughterRâs)
123
394931
5275
dar pot să aflu.
(Râsete)
Dar ce pot să vă spun e
06:52
But what I can tell you is that
our radioradio strategystrategie was workinglucru.
124
400206
7971
că strategia noastră radio mergea.
Problema e că mergea
la gradele inferioare ale gherilei.
07:00
The problemproblemă is that it was workinglucru
in the lowerinferior ranksrândurile of the guerrillagherilă.
125
408177
3684
Nu mergea în rândul comandanților,
oamenii mai greu de înlocuit.
07:04
It was not workinglucru with the commandersComandanţii,
126
411861
2363
07:06
the people that are
more difficultdificil to replacea inlocui,
127
414224
2211
Pentru că e ușor să recrutezi,
dar cu comandanții e mai greu.
07:08
because you can easilyuşor recruitrecruta
but you can't get the oldermai batran commandersComandanţii.
128
416435
5578
07:14
So we thought, well,
we'llbine use the samela fel strategystrategie.
129
422013
3683
Atunci ne-am gândit
să folosim aceeași strategie:
să lăsăm comandanții
să se adreseze comandanților.
07:17
We'llVom have commandersComandanţii
talkingvorbind to commandersComandanţii.
130
425696
2566
07:20
And we even wenta mers as fardeparte
as askingcer ex-commanderscomandanţi de ex of the guerrillagherilă
131
428262
3776
Mai mult, le-am cerut
unor foști comandanți de gherilă
să zboare cu elicopterele, cu microfoane,
07:24
to flya zbura on helicopterselicoptere with microphonesmicrofoane
132
432038
2735
07:26
tellingspune the people that
used to fightluptă with them,
133
434773
3461
și să le spună
celor cu care luptau cândva:
07:30
"There is a better life out there,"
134
438234
2113
„E o viață mai bună afară”,
„O duc bine”,
„Ce faceți nu merită” etc.
07:32
"I'm doing good,"
"This is not worthin valoare de it," etcetc.
135
440347
2577
07:35
But, as you can all imagineimagina,
it was very easyuşor to counteractcontracara,
136
442924
5106
Dar, după cum vă puteți imagina,
asta se poate contracara ușor.
07:40
because what was
the guerrillagherilă going to say?
137
448030
2553
Pentru că acum partizanii puteau spune:
„Da, sigur, dacă nu face asta îl omoară."
07:42
"Yeah, right, if he doesn't do that,
he's going to get killeducis."
138
450583
3208
Le era ușor, așa că am rămas
dintr-odată cu mâinile goale,
07:45
So it was easyuşor, so we were
suddenlybrusc left with nothing,
139
453791
4065
07:50
because the guerrillagherilă
were spreadingrăspândire the wordcuvânt
140
457856
2279
fiindcă partizanii răspândeau vestea
că toate astea se întâmplau
07:52
that all of those things are doneTerminat
141
460135
2711
07:55
because if they don't do it,
they're in dangerPericol.
142
462846
5502
pentru că altfel
foștii comandanți erau în pericol.
08:00
And somebodycineva, some
brilliantSclipitor personpersoană in our teamechipă,
143
468348
3164
Cineva, un om isteț din echipa noastră,
08:03

08:16
And that was incredibleincredibil,
148
484393
2607
A fost incredibil,
pentru că ne-a sugerat
că trebuie să vorbim cu omul,
08:19
because that led us to think
that we neededNecesar to talk to the humanuman beingfiind

Mă emoționez când mă gândesc la el
09:20
because he was killeducis latermai tarziu in combatluptă

167
548431
4385
pentru că mai târziu a murit în luptă
și ne e foarte tare dor de el.
Dar am vrut să-l vedeți cu toții,
pentru că a avut un rol foarte important,
09:25
but I wanted you all to see him,
because he was really, really importantimportant.
168

He gavea dat us all the supporta sustine

09:35
What happeneds-a întâmplat latermai tarziu is that
the guerrillasluptători de gherilă who camea venit out
170
563220

Dar pe urmă partizanii care au ieșit

but you know what?
We really don't walkmers pe jos anymoremai.
173
573369
2530
Noi nu prea mai mergem pe jos.
Folosim râurile.”
09:48
We use riversrâuri."
174
575899
1452
09:49
So riversrâuri are the highwaysautostrăzi of the junglejunglă,
175
577351
3387
Râurile sunt autostrăzile junglei.
09:52
and this is something we learnedînvățat,
176
580738
2197
E un lucru pe care l-am aflat.
Iar cele mai multe recrutări se făceau
în satele din apropierea râurilor.
09:55
and mostcel mai of the recruitingrecrutare was beingfiind doneTerminat
in and around the riverrâu villagessate.
177
582935
5302
Atunci ne-am dus la aceste sate
de lângă râuri și am întrebat oamenii,
10:00
So we wenta mers to these riverrâu villagessate,
178
588237
2283
10:02
and we askedîntrebă the people,
179
590520
1901
că probabil unii din ei
cunoșteau partizanii direct.
10:04
and probablyprobabil some of them were
directdirect acquaintancescunoscuţii of the guerrillasluptători de gherilă.
180
592421
3354
I-am întrebat: „Puteți trimite
partizanilor un mesaj?”
10:07
We askedîntrebă them, "Can you sendtrimite
guerrillasluptători de gherilă a messagemesaj?"
181
595775
3994
Am adunat peste 6000 de mesaje.
10:11
We collectedadunat over 6,000 messagesmesaje.
182
599769
3390
Unele erau bilețele pe care scria „Ieși”.
10:15
Some of them were notesnotițe sayingzicală, get out.
183
603159
2646
Unele erau jucării. Unele erau dulciuri.
10:18
Some of them were toysjucarii.
Some of them were candybomboane.
184
605805
2717
10:20
Even people tooka luat off theiral lor jewelryBijuterii,
theiral lor little crossescruci and religiousreligios things,
185
608522
4190
Unii și-au scos chiar bijuteriile,
cruciulițele și obiectele religioase
și le-au pus în niște mingi plutitoare
pe care le-am trimis pe râu
10:24
and put them in these floatingplutitor ballsbile
that we senttrimis down the riversrâuri
186
612725
5415
10:30
so that they could be pickedales up at night.
187
618140
2595
ca să fie adunate noaptea.
Le-am trimis cu miile pe râuri
și le-am adunat apoi pe cele neluate.
10:32
And we senttrimis thousandsmii
of these down the riversrâuri,
188
620735
2358
10:35
and then pickedales them up
latermai tarziu if they weren'tnu au fost.
189
623093
2170
Dar multe au fost luate.
10:37
But lots of them were pickedales up.
190
625263
1532
Asta a produs, în medie,
o demobilizare la fiecare 6 ore.
10:38
This generatedgenerate, on averagein medie,
a demobilizationdemobilizare everyfiecare sixşase hoursore,
191
626795
4891
10:43
so this was incredibleincredibil and it was about:
Come home at ChristmasCrăciun.
192
631686
4060
A fost incredibil, era mesajul
„Vino acasă de Crăciun”.
10:49
Then camea venit the peacepace processproces,
193
636920
4081
Apoi a venit procesul de pace.
10:53
and when the peacepace processproces starteda început,
194
641001
2441
Și când a început procesul de pace
s-a schimbat total gândirea partizanilor.
10:55
the wholeîntreg mindsetmod de gândire
of the guerrillagherilă changedschimbat.
195
643442
2320
10:57
And it changedschimbat because
196
645762
2325
S-a schimbat pentru că
te pune pe gânduri:
11:00
it makesmărci you think, "Well,
if there's a peacepace processproces,
197
648087
2749
„Dacă e un proces de pace
înseamnă că probabil se termină.
11:03
this is probablyprobabil going to be over.
198
650836
1942
La un moment dat o să ies.”
11:04
At some pointpunct I'm going to get out."
199
652778
2112
11:07
And theiral lor fearstemerile completelycomplet changedschimbat,
200
654890
2206
Iar temerile lor s-au schimbat complet.
Nu mai erau: „Voi fi omorât?”.
11:09
and theiral lor fearstemerile were not about,
"Am I going to get killeducis?"
201
657096
3228
11:12
TheirLor fearstemerile were, "Am I
going to be rejectedrespins?
202
660324
3599
Temerile lor erau: „Voi fi oare respins?
11:16
When I get out of this,
am I going to be rejectedrespins?"
203
663923
2809
Când ies din asta, voi fi respins?”
Atunci de Crăciunul trecut,
iată ce am făcut:
11:18
So the pasttrecut ChristmasCrăciun,
what we did was we askedîntrebă --
204
666732
3071
11:22
we foundgăsite 27 mothersmame of guerrillasluptători de gherilă,
205

am găsit 27 de mame de partizani
11:25
and we askedîntrebă them to give us

206
673550
4234
și le-am rugat să ne dea

so as not to put theiral lor livesvieți in dangerPericol,
207
677784
4205

ca să nu le punem viețile în pericol,
11:34
and we askedîntrebă them to give
the mostcel mai motherlymaternă messagemesaj you can get,
208
681989
4276
și le-am rugat să ne dea cel mai autentic

219
721972
