ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Stuart Firestein - Neuroscientist
Stuart Firestein teaches students and “citizen scientists” that ignorance is far more important to discovery than knowledge.

Why you should listen

You’d think that a scientist who studies how the human brain receives and perceives information would be inherently interested in what we know. But Stuart Firestein says he’s far more intrigued by what we don’t. “Answers create questions,” he says. “We may commonly think that we begin with ignorance and we gain knowledge [but] the more critical step in the process is the reverse of that.”

Firestein, who chairs the biological sciences department at Columbia University, teaches a course about how ignorance drives science. In it -- and in his 2012 book on the topic -- he challenges the idea that knowledge and the accumulation of data create certainty. Facts are fleeting, he says; their real purpose is to lead us to ask better questions.

Stuart Firestein: În căutarea ignoranței

Filmed:

05:39
thoroughlycomplet consciousconştient ignoranceignoranţă.
126
327413
3147
05:42
So that's the kinddrăguț of ignoranceignoranţă that I want to talk about todayastăzi,
127
330560
2421
Despre ea vreau să vorbesc astăzi,
dar, primul lucru care trebuie lămurit e:
05:44
but of coursecurs the first thing we have to clearclar up
128
332981
1519
05:46
is what are we going to do with all those factsfapte?
129
334500
2103
ce vrem să facem cu toate descoperirile?
05:48
So it is trueAdevărat that scienceştiinţă pilespiloți up at an alarmingalarmant raterată.
130
336603
3674
Ştiința evoluează într-un ritm alarmant.
05:52
We all have this sensesens that scienceştiinţă is this mountainMunte of factsfapte,
131
340277
2810
Toți avem sentimentul
că știința e un munte de date,
05:55
this accumulationacumulare modelmodel of scienceştiinţă, as manymulți have calleddenumit it,
132
343087
4036
un model de acumulare
a cunoștințelor științifice
05:59
and it seemspare impregnableiulia, it seemspare impossibleimposibil.
133
347123
2451
care pare de nepătruns, de neatins.
Cum să poţi ştii vreodată tot?
06:01
How can you ever know all of this?
134
349574
1314
06:02
And indeedintr-adevar, the scientificștiințific literatureliteratură growsdezvoltă at an alarmingalarmant raterată.
135
350888
3581
Literatura științifică creşte alarmant.
06:06
In 2006, there were 1.3 millionmilion papershârtii publishedpublicat.
136
354469
3654
În 2006 s-au publicat
1,3 milioane de lucrări.
06:10
There's about a two-and-a-half-percentdouă şi jumătate de procente yearlyanual growthcreştere raterată,
137
358123
2632
Rata anuală de creștere e de 2,5%, anul
trecut publicându-se 1,5 mil. lucrări.
06:12
and so last yearan we saw over one and a halfjumătate millionmilion papershârtii beingfiind publishedpublicat.
138
360755
4390
06:17
DivideDecalajului that by the numbernumăr of minutesminute in a yearan,
139
365145

06:19
and you windvânt up with threeTrei newnou papershârtii perpe minuteminut.
140
367375
3138
06:22
So I've been up here a little over 10 minutesminute,
141
370513
1482
Sunt aici de peste 10 minute,
am ratat deja trei lucrări.
06:23
I've alreadydeja lostpierdut threeTrei papershârtii.
142
371995
1776
06:25
I have to get out of here actuallyde fapt. I have to go readcitit.
143
373771
2840
Trebuie să plec.
Trebuie să merg să citesc.
06:28
So what do we do about this? Well, the factfapt is
144
376611
3446
Ce facem cu asta?
Adevărul e că cercetătorii
reacționează prin neglijenţă controlată.
06:32
that what scientistsoamenii de știință do about it is a kinddrăguț of a controlleddirijat neglectneglijare, if you will.
145
380057
4509
06:36
We just don't worryface griji about it, in a way.
146
384566
2664
Pur și simplu nu ne îngrijorăm.
Informațiile sunt importante.
06:39
The factsfapte are importantimportant. You have to know a lot of stuffchestie
147
387230
2243
Un cercetător trebuie să ştie multe.
Ăsta-i adevărul.
06:41
to be a scientistom de stiinta. That's trueAdevărat.
148
389473
1810
06:43
But knowingcunoaștere a lot of stuffchestie doesn't make you a scientistom de stiinta.
149
391283
2927
Dar că știi multe nu înseamnă
că eşti cercetător.
06:46
You need to know a lot of stuffchestie to be a lawyeravocat
150
394210
2665
06:48
or an accountantcontabil or an electricianelectrician or a carpentercornel.
151
396875
3892
06:52
But in scienceştiinţă, knowingcunoaștere a lot of stuffchestie is not the pointpunct.
152
400767
3610
06:56
KnowingŞtiind a lot of stuffchestie is there to help you get
153
404377
3556
Faptul că ştii multe te ajută
să ajungi la mai multă ignoranţă.
06:59
to more ignoranceignoranţă.
154
407933
1388
07:01
So knowledgecunoştinţe is a bigmare subjectsubiect, but I would say
155
409321
2510
Cunoașterea e un subiect vast,
dar îndrăznesc să afirm
07:03
ignoranceignoranţă is a biggermai mare one.
156
411831
2487
07:06
So this leadsOportunitati us to maybe think about, a little bitpic
157
414318
2194
07:08
about, some of the modelsmodele of scienceştiinţă that we tendtind to use,
158
416528
2883
07:11
and I'd like to disabusetrezi you of some of them.
159
419411
1825
O să vă simplific câteva.
07:13
So one of them, a popularpopular one, is that scientistsoamenii de știință
160
421236
2313
Unul popular dintre ele e că cercetătorii
aranjază răbdători piese de puzzle,
07:15
are patientlycu răbdare puttingpunând the piecesbucăți of a puzzlepuzzle togetherîmpreună
161
423549
2628
07:18
to revealdezvălui some grandmare schemesistem or anothero alta.
162
426177
2773
ca să dezvăluie ceva mai măreţ.
Nu e adevărat.
07:20
This is clearlyclar not trueAdevărat. For one, with puzzlespuzzle-uri,
163
428950
2558
În primul rând, cu puzzle-urile,
producătorul garantează că există soluție.
07:23
the manufacturerproducător has guaranteedgarantat that there's a solutionsoluţie.
164
431508
3499
07:27
We don't have any suchastfel de guaranteegaranție.
165
435007
1749
Noi nu avem astfel de garanție.
07:28
IndeedÎntr-adevăr, there are manymulți of us who aren'tnu sunt so sure about the manufacturerproducător.
166
436756
3155
Mulți nici nu suntem siguri
cine-i producătorul.
07:31
(LaughterRâs)
167
439911
3063
(Râsete)
07:34
So I think the puzzlepuzzle modelmodel doesn't work.
168
442974
1757
Deci modelul puzzle nu-i valabil.
07:36
AnotherUn alt popularpopular modelmodel is that scienceştiinţă is busyocupat unravelingdestramare things
169
444731
3514
Alt exemplu e că știința descoperă lucruri
ca și cum desfaci foile cepei.
07:40
the way you unraveldescurca the peelscoji de of an onionceapa.
170
448245
2196
07:42
So peelpieliță by peelpieliță, you take away the layersstraturi of the onionceapa
171
450441
2989
Înlături pe rând straturile cepei
ca să ajungi la miezul adevărului.
07:45
to get at some fundamentalfundamental kernelkernel-ului of truthadevăr.
172
453430
2319
07:47
I don't think that's the way it workslucrări eitherfie.
173
455749
2187
Nici asta nu cred, că aşa funcţionează.
07:49
AnotherUn alt one, a kinddrăguț of popularpopular one, is the icebergaisberg ideaidee,
174
457936
2934
Alt model e ideea de aisberg:
07:52
that we only see the tipbacsis of the icebergaisberg but underneathdedesubt
175
460870
2460
07:55
is where mostcel mai of the icebergaisberg is hiddenascuns.
176
463330
2185
07:57
But all of these modelsmodele are basedbazat on the ideaidee of a largemare bodycorp of factsfapte
177
465515
3554
Toate aceste modele se bazează pe ideea
unui conglomerat de informații
08:01
that we can somehowoarecum or anothero alta get completedterminat.
178
469069
2420
pe care le putem, cumva, finaliza.
08:03
We can chipcip away at this icebergaisberg and figurefigura out what it is,
179
471489
3343
Putem sparge aisbergul în bucăţi mici
ca să ne dăm seama ce reprezintă,
08:06
or we could just wait for it to meltse topesc, I supposepresupune, these dayszi,
180
474832
2605
sau cred că azi putem doar
să așteptăm să se topească,
08:09
but one way or anothero alta we could get to the wholeîntreg icebergaisberg. Right?
181
477437
3227
dar cumva tot studiem
tot aisbergul, nu-i aşa?
08:12
Or make it manageableuşor de gestionat. But I don't think that's the casecaz.
182
480664
2467
Sau îl facem gestionabil.
Dar nu cred că aşa stau lucrurile.
08:15
I think what really happensse întâmplă in scienceştiinţă
183
483131
2399
Cred că în știință e ceva asemănător
cu o fântână magică,
08:17
is a modelmodel more like the magicmagie well,
184
485530
1830
08:19
where no mattermaterie how manymulți bucketsgăleți you take out,
185
487360
1837
din care oricâte găleți ai scoate,
mereu mai poţi scoate încă una,
08:21
there's always anothero alta bucketgaleata of waterapă to be had,
186
489197
2112
08:23
or my particularlyîn special favoritefavorit one,
187
491309
2127
08:25
with the effectefect and everything, the ripplesvaluri on a pondlac.
188
493436
2939
08:28
So if you think of knowledgecunoştinţe beingfiind this ever-expandingcontinuă expansiune rippleunda on a pondlac,
189
496375
3127
Dacă cunoaşterea e unda
în permanentă extindere,
08:31
the importantimportant thing to realizerealiza is that our ignoranceignoranţă,
190
499502
3382
e important să-ţi dai seama
că ignoranţa noastră,
08:34
the circumferencecircumferinţa of this knowledgecunoştinţe, alsode asemenea growsdezvoltă with knowledgecunoştinţe.
191
502884
3382
adică circumferinţa acestor cunoștințe
creşte odată cu cunoașterea.
08:38
So the knowledgecunoştinţe generatesgenerează ignoranceignoranţă.
192
506266
2763
Așadar, știința generează ignoranţă.
08:41
This is really well said, I thought, by GeorgeGeorge BernardBernard ShawShaw.
193
509029

George Bernard Shaw a spus-o într-un toast

I find that kinddrăguț of gloriousglorios, and I think he's preciselyexact right,

Consider asta excepțional

205
541275
2739
09:16
So I'd say the modelmodel we want to take is not
206
544014
1887
Modelul pe care l-am adopta nu constă
în a porni neştiutori, a aduna dovezi
09:17
that we startstart out kinddrăguț of ignorantignorant and we get some factsfapte togetherîmpreună
207
545901
3509
09:21
and then we gaincâştig knowledgecunoştinţe.
208
549410

obținând astfel cunoștințe.
09:23
It's rathermai degraba kinddrăguț of the other way around, really.
209
551553
2379
De fapt, e chiar invers.
La ce folosim aceste cunoștințe?
09:25
What do we use this knowledgecunoştinţe for?
210
553932
1907
09:27
What are we usingutilizând this collectionColectie of factsfapte for?
211
555839
2528
La ce folosește colectarea de informații?
09:30
We're usingutilizând it to make better ignoranceignoranţă,
212
558367
2857
O folosim pentru ignoranţă de calitate,
de calitate mai bună.
09:33
to come up with, if you will, higher-qualitycalitate superioară ignoranceignoranţă.
213
561224
3079
09:36
Because, you know, there's low-qualitycalitate scăzută ignoranceignoranţă
214
564303
1872
Deoarece există ignoranţă inferioară
şi ignoranţă de calitate. Nu-s la fel.
09:38
and there's high-qualitycalitate ignoranceignoranţă. It's not all the samela fel.
215
566175
2413
09:40
ScientistsOamenii de stiinta argueargumenta about this all the time.
216
568588
2370
Cercetătorii se contrazic
mereu pe această temă.
09:42
SometimesUneori we call them bullTaur sessionssesiuni.
217
570958
1965
Uneori le numim ședințe aprinse.
09:44
SometimesUneori we call them grantacorda proposalspropuneri.
218
572923
1918
09:46
But nonethelesscu toate acestea, it's what the argumentargument is about.
219
574841
3508
Cu toate acestea, tema discuției este importantă.
09:50
It's the ignoranceignoranţă. It's the what we don't know.
220
578349
1844
Este neștiința. Este ceea ce nu știm.
09:52
It's what makesmărci a good questionîntrebare.
221
580193
2690
Este ceea ce definește o întrebare bună.
09:54
So how do we think about these questionsîntrebări?
222
582883
1630
Deci, cum ajungem la aceste întrebări?
09:56
I'm going to showspectacol you a graphgrafic that showsspectacole up
223
584513
1952
Vă voi arăta un grafic care prezintă
09:58
quitedestul de a bitpic on happyfericit hourora posterspostere in variousvariat scienceştiinţă departmentsdepartamente.
224
586465
3867
câteva informații despre anumite afișe din diferite departamente științifice.
10:02
This graphgrafic askssolicită the relationshiprelaţie betweenîntre what you know
225
590332
4221
10:06
and how much you know about it.
226
594553
2190
10:08
So what you know, you can know anywhereoriunde from nothing to everything, of coursecurs,
227
596743
3515
10:12
and how much you know about it can be anywhereoriunde
228
600258
1683
10:13
from a little to a lot.
229
601941
2423
de la puțin la mult.
10:16
So let's put a pointpunct on the graphgrafic. There's an undergraduateuniversitare de licenţă.
230
604364
4232
Să punem un punct pe grafic. Avem aici un student.
10:20
Doesn't know much but they have a lot of interestinteres.
231
608596
2364
Nu posedă multe cunoștințe dar manifestă interes.
10:22
They're interestedinteresat in almostaproape everything.
232
610960

Este interesat de aproape orice.
10:24
Now you look at a master'sMaster studentstudent, a little furthermai departe alongde-a lungul in theiral lor educationeducaţie,
233
612651
3454
10:28
and you see they know a bitpic more,
234
616105
1351
10:29
but it's been narrowedîngustat somewhatoarecum.
235
617456
1890
dar este totuși limitat.
10:31
And finallyin sfarsit you get your PhPH-ul.D., where it turnstransformă out
236
619346
2719
10:34
you know a tremendousextraordinar amountCantitate about almostaproape nothing. (LaughterRâs)
237
622065
5105
cunoștințe vaste despre aproape nimic. (Râsete)
10:39
What's really disturbingderanjant is the trendtendinţă linelinia that goesmerge throughprin that
238
627170
3781
Ceea ce e de-a dreptul deranjant e tendința generată astfel,
10:42
because, of coursecurs, when it dipsgolurilor belowde mai jos the zerozero axisaxă, there,
239
630951
3775
deoarece, când linia ajunge sub axa zero,
10:46
it getsdevine into a negativenegativ areazonă.
240
634726
2262
ajunge într-o zonă negativă.
10:48
That's where you find people like me, I'm afraidsperiat.
241
636988
2915
Din păcate, acolo întâlnești oameni ca mine.
10:51
So the importantimportant thing here is that this can all be changedschimbat.
242
639903
3368
10:55
This wholeîntreg viewvedere can be changedschimbat
243
643271
1804
Toată această perspectivă se poate schimba
10:57
by just changingschimbare the labeleticheta on the x-axisaxa x.
244
645075
3161
doar prin schimbarea etichetei din axa x.
11:00
So insteadin schimb of how much you know about it,
245
648236
1917
11:02
we could say, "What can you askcere about it?"
246
650153
3541
am putea spune „Ce întrebări poți formula despre acest lucru?”
11:05
So yes, you do need to know a lot of stuffchestie as a scientistom de stiinta,
247
653694
2867
11:08
but the purposescop of knowingcunoaștere a lot of stuffchestie
248
656561
2629
dar scopul unei cunoașteri vaste
11:11
is not just to know a lot of stuffchestie. That just makesmărci you a geekGeek, right?
249
659190
2587

13:22
If there's a realreal roseTrandafir there, those moleculesmolecule will be the onescele,

you'llveți have the memorymemorie of a moleculemoleculă.

13:32
Here'sAici este anothero alta exampleexemplu: two very simplesimplu moleculesmolecule, again in this kinddrăguț of chemicalchimic notationnotaţia.
308
800836

Iată un alt exemplu: două molecule simple, prezentate sub forma unei denumiri chimice.
13:36
It mightar putea be easierMai uşor to visualizeimagina them this way,
309

13:38
so the graygri circlescerc are carboncarbon atomsatomi, the whitealb onescele
310
806873
2794
cercurile gri reprezintă atomi de carbon, cele albe
13:41

311
809667

13:44
Now these two moleculesmolecule differdiferi by only one carboncarbon atomatom
312
812442
4298
13:48
and two little hydrogenhidrogen atomsatomi that ridecălătorie alongde-a lungul with it,
313
816740

and yetinca one of them, heptylheptyl acetateacetat de,

and hexylhexil acetateacetat de is unmistakablynegreşit bananabanană.
316
823725

iar hextil acetatul este, negreșit, banană.
13:59
So there are two really interestinginteresant questionsîntrebări here, it seemspare to me.
317
827564
2557
14:02
One is, how can a simplesimplu little moleculemoleculă like that
318
830121
3215
14:05
createcrea a perceptionpercepţie in your braincreier that's so clearclar
319
833336
2468
14:07
as a pearpere or a bananabanană?
320
835804
1742
de pară sau de banană?
14:09
And secondlyîn al doilea rând, how the helliad can we tell the differencediferență
321
837546
3121
Și a doua întrebare, cum putem distinge
14:12
betweenîntre two moleculesmolecule that differdiferi by a singlesingur carboncarbon atomatom?
322
840667
4315
14:16
I mean, that's remarkableremarcabil to me,

324

14:21
And you don't even think about it, do you?

So what do we do? Well the geneticistsGeneticienii, I have to say,
377
986123
2334
Așadar, cum procedăm? Ei bine, specialiștii în genetică
16:40
have an interestinginteresant maximmaxim they livetrăi by.
378
988457

16:42
GeneticistsGeneticienii always say, you always get what you screenecran for.
379
990440
5252
16:47
And that's meanta însemnat as a warningavertizare.
380
995692
2861
Și ăsta e un avertisment.
16:50
So we always will get what we screenecran for,
381
998553
2319
16:52
and partparte of what we screenecran for is in our testingTestarea methodsmetode.
382
1000872
3455
16:56
Well, we hearauzi a lot about testingTestarea and evaluationevaluare,
383
1004327
3243
Ei bine, auzim multe despre testare și evaluare,
16:59
and we have to think carefullycu grija when we're testingTestarea
384
1007570
2187
17:01
whetherdacă we're evaluatingevaluarea or whetherdacă we're weedingplivitul,
385
1009757
3087
indiferent dacă evaluăm sau selectăm,
17:04
whetherdacă we're weedingplivitul people out,
386
1012844
1459
dacă eliminăm persoane,
17:06
whetherdacă we're makingluare some cuta taia.
387
1014303
3134
dacă facem trieri.
17:09
EvaluationEvaluare is one thing. You hearauzi a lot about evaluationevaluare
388
1017437
2641
Evaluarea e importantă. Auzi multe despre evaluare
17:12
in the literatureliteratură these dayszi, in the educationaleducational literatureliteratură,
389
1020078
2910
în literatura actuală, în literatura educațională,
17:14
but evaluationevaluare really amountssume to feedbackparere and it amountssume
390
1022988
2958
17:17
to an opportunityoportunitate for trialproces and erroreroare.
391
1025946
2154
17:20
It amountssume to a chanceşansă to work over a longermai lung periodperioadă of time
392
1028100
4494
17:24
with this kinddrăguț of feedbackparere.
393
1032594
1910
primind continuu acest feedback.
17:26
That's differentdiferit than weedingplivitul, and usuallyde obicei, I have to tell you,
394
1034504
2938
17:29
when people talk about evaluationevaluare, evaluatingevaluarea studentselevi,
395
1037442
2726
când oamenii discută despre evaluare, evaluarea elevilor,
17:32
evaluatingevaluarea teachersprofesori, evaluatingevaluarea schoolsșcoli,
396
1040168
2787
evaluarea profesorilor, a școlilor,
17:34
evaluatingevaluarea programsprograme, that they're really talkingvorbind about weedingplivitul.
397
1042955
4161
17:39
And that's a badrău thing, because then you will get what you selectSelectați for,
398
1047116
4210
17:43
whichcare is what we'vene-am gottenajuns so fardeparte.
399
1051326
1958
17:45
So I'd say what we need is a testTest that saysspune, "What is x?"
400
1053284
3441
17:48
and the answersrăspunsuri are "I don't know, because no one does,"
401
1056725
3092
17:51
or "What's the questionîntrebare?" Even better.
402
1059817
1741
sau „Care este întrebarea?”. Și mai bine.
17:53
Or, "You know what, I'll look it up, I'll askcere someonecineva,
403
1061558
2390
17:55
I'll phonetelefon someonecineva. I'll find out."
404
1063964
2700
o să sun pe cineva. O să aflu.”
17:58
Because that's what we want people to do,
405
1066664
1550
Pentru că asta vrem să facă oamenii,
18:00
and that's how you evaluatea evalua them.
406
1068214
1371
și așa îi evaluăm.
18:01
And maybe for the advancedavansat placementplasare classesclase,
407
1069585
1943
18:03
it could be, "Here'sAici este the answerRăspuns. What's the nextUrmător → questionîntrebare?"
408
1071528
3714
ar fi, „Iată răspunsul. Care e următoarea întrebare?”
18:07
That's the one I like in particularspecial.
409
1075242
1511
Asta-i întrebarea care îmi place în mod deosebit.
18:08
So let me endSfârşit with a quotecitat from WilliamWilliam ButlerButler YeatsYeats,
410
1076753
2177
18:10
who said "EducationEducaţie is not about fillingumplere bucketsgăleți;

care a afirmat „Învățământul nu înseamnă umplerea găleților;

412

ci aprinderea focului.”
18:16
So I'd say, let's get out the matchesmeciuri.
413
1084250

Deci, hai să scoatem chibriturile.
