ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Arthur Benjamin - Mathemagician
Using daring displays of algorithmic trickery, lightning calculator and number wizard Arthur Benjamin mesmerizes audiences with mathematical mystery and beauty.

Why you should listen

Arthur Benjamin makes numbers dance. In his day job, he's a professor of math at Harvey Mudd College; in his other day job, he's a "Mathemagician," taking the stage in his tuxedo to perform high-speed mental calculations, memorizations and other astounding math stunts. It's part of his drive to teach math and mental agility in interesting ways, following in the footsteps of such heroes as Martin Gardner.

Benjamin is the co-author, with Michael Shermer, of Secrets of Mental Math (which shares his secrets for rapid mental calculation), as well as the co-author of the MAA award-winning Proofs That Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof. For a glimpse of his broad approach to math, see the list of research talks on his website, which seesaws between high-level math (such as his "Vandermonde's Determinant and Fibonacci SAWs," presented at MIT in 2004) and engaging math talks for the rest of us ("An Amazing Mathematical Card Trick").

02:27
Now, it's no surpriseизненађење

Ne iznenađuje činjenica

that when you addдодати consecutiveza redom FibonacciFibonacci numbersбројеви,

nineдевет plusплус 25 is 34,

and yes, the patternобразац continuesнаставља.
70

i da, šablon se nastavlja.
02:54
In factчињеница, here'sево anotherдруги one.
71
162832

Zapravo, evo još jednog.

03:00
Let's see what we get there.

So one plusплус one plusплус fourчетири is sixшест.
75

1 + 1 + 4 je 6.
03:04
AddDodavanje nineдевет to that, we get 15.
76
172542

Tome dodajte 9, to je 15.
03:07
AddDodavanje 25, we get 40.
77

Dodajte 64 i to je 104.
03:12
Now look at those numbersбројеви.
79
180551

Sada pogledajte te brojke.
03:14
Those are not FibonacciFibonacci numbersбројеви,

I'll showсхов you by drawingцртеж a simpleједноставно pictureслика.
96
221184

Pokazaću vam uz pomoć
jednostavnog crteža.
03:56
We'llCemo startпочетак with a one-by-onejedan po jedan squareквадрат
97
224145
2687
Počećemo sa kvadratom
dimenzija 1x1
03:58
and nextследећи to that put anotherдруги one-by-onejedan po jedan squareквадрат.
98
226832
4165
i pored ćemo dodati
još jedan kvadrat dimenzija 1x1.
04:02
TogetherZajedno, they formобразац a one-by-twojedan do dva rectanglepravougaonik.
99
230997
3408
Zajedno daju pravougaonik
dimenzija 1x2.
04:06
BeneathIspod that, I'll put a two-by-twodvoje po dvoje squareквадрат,
100
234405
2549
Ispod toga, dodaću kvadrat
dimenzija 2x2,
04:08
and nextследећи to that, a three-by-threetri po tri squareквадрат,
101
236954
2795
a pored toga,
kvadrat dimenzija 3x3,
04:11
beneathиспод that, a five-by-fivepet po pet squareквадрат,
102
239749
2001
ispod toga, kvadrat dimenzija 5x5
04:13
and then an eight-by-eightosam sa osam squareквадрат,
103
241750
1912
i onda kvadrat dimenzija 8x8,
04:15
creatingстварање one giantгигант rectanglepravougaonik, right?
104
243662
2572
stvarajući jedan
ogromni pravougaonik, zar ne?
04:18
Now let me askпитати you a simpleједноставно questionпитање:
105
246234
1916
Dozvolite da vam postavim
jednostavno pitanje:
04:20
what is the areaподручје of the rectanglepravougaonik?
106
248150
3656
koja je površina pravouganika?
04:23
Well, on the one handруку,
107
251806
1971
Sa jedne strane,
04:25
it's the sumсум of the areasобласти
108
253777
2530
to je zbir površina
04:28
of the squaresквадрати insideу it, right?
109
256307
1866
kvadrata unutar njega, zar ne?
04:30
Just as we createdстворено it.
110
258173
1359
Baš kao što smo ga napravili.
04:31
It's one squaredna kvadrat plusплус one squaredna kvadrat
111
259532
2172
To je 1 na kvadrat + 1 na kvadrat
04:33
plusплус two squaredna kvadrat plusплус threeтри squaredna kvadrat
112
261704
2233
+ 2 na kvadrat + 3 na kvadrat
04:35
plusплус fiveпет squaredna kvadrat plusплус eightосам squaredna kvadrat. Right?
113
263937
2599
+ 5 na kvadrat + 8 na kvadrat.
Zar ne?
04:38
That's the areaподручје.
114
266536
1857
To je površina.
04:40
On the other handруку, because it's a rectanglepravougaonik,
115
268393
2326
Sa druge strane, zbog toga
što je to pravougonik,
04:42
the areaподручје is equalједнак to its heightвисина timesпута its baseбазу,
116
270719
3648
površinu dobijemo kada pomnožimo
visinu i osnovu,
04:46
and the heightвисина is clearlyјасно eightосам,
117
274367
2047
a visina je očigledno 8
04:48
and the baseбазу is fiveпет plusплус eightосам,
118
276414
2903
dok je osnova 5 + 8,
04:51
whichкоја is the nextследећи FibonacciFibonacci numberброј, 13. Right?
119
279317
3938
što je sledeći Fibonačijev broj, 13.
Zar ne?
04:55
So the areaподручје is alsoтакође eightосам timesпута 13.
120
283255
3363
Površina je takođe 8 puta 13.
04:58
SinceOd we'veми смо correctlyисправно calculatedizračunava the areaподручје
121
286618
2262
Pošto smo tačno izračunali površinu
05:00
two differentразличит waysначини,
122

05:02
they have to be the sameисти numberброј,
123
290567
2172
to mora da bude isti broj
05:04
and that's why the squaresквадрати of one,
one, two, threeтри, fiveпет and eightосам
124
292739
3391
i zbog toga kvadradne vrednosti
brojeva 1, 1, 2, 3, 5 i 8

125
