ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jinsop Lee - Multi-sense designer
Jinsop Lee is an industrial designer who believes that great design appeals to all five senses.

Why you should listen

A former professor of design, Jinsop Lee founded the firm Uncle Oswald Is My Hero, which produces clever iPod speakers from old telephone handsets. And we'll let him take it from here:

"My design background began when I was 5 years old. My mother cruelly refused to buy me a Star Wars X-wing fighter, so I built my own from Lego. Yes, I was the traumatized little boy in the corner of the playground holding the multi-coloured Lego X-wing fighter. However, this did teach me an important lesson: You don't have to follow the instructions that come with the box.

As an adult, I started my career as a suit-wearing design consultant, designing stuff and strategies for large companies. I then spent a mandatory two years in the Korean Army without killing anybody. Then I began teaching English, which eventually led to a job as an associate professor of industrial design. Being a professor means you're designing the most important thing of all: students and the type of designers they will later become.

"Now I am working on a series of short videos about industrial design. Each video follows a simple formula: the viewer must learn something new about design while laughing (or snickering) an average of two times per minute. It turns out the second criteria is much harder than the first."

00:22
If you're laughing, you know what I mean.

let me tell you about Chris克里斯 Hosmer霍斯默.
5
13738
2544
00:28
Chris克里斯 is a great friend朋友 of mine from my university大学 days,
6
16282
2440
Chris
00:30
but secretly偷偷, I hate讨厌 him.
7
18722
3115
00:33
Here's这里的 why. Back in university大学, we had a quick project项目
8
21837
2920
00:36
to design设计 some solar-powered太阳能 clocks时钟.
9
24757
1982
00:38
Here's这里的 my clock时钟.
10
26739
1554
00:40
It uses使用 something called the dwarf矮人 sunflower向日葵,
11
28293
2477
00:42
which哪一个 grows成长 to about 12 inches英寸 in height高度.
12
30770
2346
00:45
Now, as you know, sunflowers
13
33116
2066
00:47
track跟踪 the sun太阳 during the course课程 of the day.
14
35182
2236
00:49
So in the morning早上, you see which哪一个 direction方向 the sunflower向日葵 is facing面对,
15
37418
3362
00:52
and you mark标记 it on the blank空白 area in the base基础.
16
40780
3190
00:55
At noon中午, you mark标记 the changed position位置 of the sunflower向日葵,
17
43970
2951
00:58
and in the evening晚间 again, and that's your clock时钟.
18
46921
3372
01:02
Now, I know my clock时钟 doesn't tell you the exact精确 time,
19
50293
2586
01:04
but it does give you a general一般 idea理念 using运用 a flower.
20
52879
2728
01:07
So, in my completely全然 unbiased不偏不倚, subjective主观 opinion意见,
21
55607
3116
01:10
it's brilliant辉煌.
22
58723
1719
01:12
However然而, here's这里的 Chris'克里斯' clock时钟.
23
60442
2826
01:15
It's five magnifying放大 glasses眼镜 with a shot射击 glass玻璃 under each one.
24
63268
4051
01:19
In each shot射击 glass玻璃 is a different不同 scented oil.
25
67319
2921
01:22
In the morning早上, the sunlight阳光 will shine闪耀 down
26
70240
1519
01:23
on the first magnifying放大 glass玻璃,
27
71759
1659
01:25
focusing调焦 a beam光束 of light on the shot射击 glass玻璃 underneath.
28
73418
3030
01:28
This will warm up the scented oil inside,
29
76448
2199
01:30
and a particular特定 smell will be emitted发射.
30
78647
2584
01:33
A couple一对 of hours小时 later后来, the sun太阳 will shine闪耀
31
81231
1811
01:35
on the next下一个 magnifying放大 glass玻璃, and a different不同 smell will be emitted发射.
32
83042
3558
01:38
So during the course课程 of the day, five different不同 smells气味
33
86600
2681
01:41
are dispersed分散 throughout始终 that environment环境.
34
89281
2035
01:43
Anyone任何人 living活的 in that house can tell the time

2740
01:46
just by the smell.
36
94056
2472
01:48
You can see why I hate讨厌 Chris克里斯.
37
96528
2353
01:50
I thought my idea理念 was pretty漂亮 good,
38
98881
1362
01:52
but his idea理念 is genius天才,
39
100243
2673
01:54
and at the time, I knew知道 his idea理念 was better than mine,
40
102916
2621
01:57
but I just couldn't不能 explain说明 why.
41
105537
2822
02:00
One thing you have to know about me is I hate讨厌 to lose失去.
42
108359
3530
02:03
This problem's问题 been bugging窃听 me for well over a decade.
43
111889
3862
02:07
All right, let's get back to the question of why sex性别 is so good.
44
115751
3360
02:11
Many许多 years年份 after the solar太阳能 powered动力 clocks时钟 project项目,
45
119111
2861
02:13
a young年轻 lady淑女 I knew知道 suggested建议 maybe sex性别 is so good
46
121972
3704
02:17
because of the five senses感官.
47
125676
1940
02:19
And when she said this, I had an epiphany
48
127616
2809
02:22
So I decided决定 to evaluate评估 different不同 experiences经验 I had in my life
49
130425
3731
02:26
from the point of view视图 of the five senses感官.
50
134156
2488
02:28
To do this, I devised设计 something called the five senses感官 graph图形.
51
136644
3710
02:32
Along沿 the y-axisy轴, you have a scale规模 from zero to 10,
52
140354
3085
02:35
and along沿 the x-axisx轴, you have, of course课程, the five senses感官.
53
143439
3347
02:38
Anytime任何时候 I had a memorable难忘 experience经验 in my life,
54
146786
2584
02:41
I would record记录 it on this graph图形 like a five senses感官 diary日记.
55
149370
3995
02:45
Here's这里的 a quick video视频 to show显示 you how it works作品.
56
153365
3192
02:48

02:51
and today今天, I'm going to show显示 you what riding骑术 motorbikes摩托车

02:53

04:03
Now, for a period of three years年份, I gathered云集 data数据,
68
231962
3349
04:07
not just me but also some of my friends朋友,
69
235311
2756
04:10
and I used to teach in university大学, so I forced被迫 my --
70
238067
2499
04:12
I mean, I asked my students学生们 to do this as well.
71
240566
2687
04:15
So here are some other results结果.
72
243253
2630
04:17
The first is for instant瞬间 noodles面条.
73
245883
2237
04:20
Now obviously明显, taste味道 and smell are quite相当 high,
74
248120
3060
04:23
but notice注意 sound声音 is at three.
75
251180
4119
04:27
Many许多 people told me a big part部分
76
255299
1577
04:28
of the noodle-eating面条吃 experience经验 is the slurping noise噪声.
77
256876
3021
04:31
You know. (Slurps
78
259897
2382
04:34
Needless不必要 to say, I no longer dine用餐 with these people.
79
262279
2819
04:39
Okay, here what I found发现 interesting有趣 was
81
267435
3721
04:43
that taste味道 is at four, and many许多 respondents受访者 told me
82
271156
4669
04:47
it's because of the taste味道 of drinks饮料,
83
275825
1654
04:49
but also, in some cases, kissing接吻 is a big part部分 of the clubbing泡吧 experience经验.
84
277479
4506
04:53
These people I still do hang out with.
85
281985
2808
04:56
All right, and smoking
86
284793
2344
04:59
Here I found发现 touch触摸 is at [six], and one of the reasons原因
87
287137
5047
05:04
is that smokers吸烟者 told me the sensation感觉 of holding保持 a cigarette香烟
88
292184
3356
05:07
and bringing使 it up to your lips嘴唇 is a big part部分 of the smoking抽烟 experience经验,
89
295540
3697
05:11
which哪一个 shows节目, it's kind of scary害怕 to think
90
299237
2679
05:13
how well cigarettes香烟 are designed设计 by the manufacturers制造商.
91
301916
3210
05:17
Okay. Now, what would the perfect完善 experience经验
92
305126
3381
05:20
look like on the five senses感官 graph图形?
93
308507
2479
05:22
It would, of course课程, be a horizontal line线 along沿 the top最佳.
94
310986
3521
05:26
Now you can see, not even as intense激烈 an experience经验
95
314507
2580
05:29
as riding骑术 a motorbike摩托车 comes close.
96
317087
2233
05:31
In fact事实, in the years年份 that I gathered云集 data数据,
97
319320
2542
05:33
only one experience经验 came来了 close to being存在 the perfect完善 one.
98
321862
3238
05:37
That is, of course课程, sex性别. Great sex性别.
99
325100
3625
05:40
Respondents受访者 said that great sex性别
100
328725
1689
05:42
hits点击 all of the five senses感官 at an extreme极端 level水平.
101
330414
3855
05:46
Here I'll quote引用 one of my students学生们 who said,
102
334269
1692
05:47
"Sex性别 is so good, it's good even when it's bad."
103
335961
4665
“性爱这么好,好到甚至过程不理想的时候也是好。“
05:52
So the five senses感官 theory理论 does help explain说明
104
340626
3313
05:55
why sex性别 is so good.
105
343939
2117
05:58
Now in the middle中间 of all this five senses感官 work,
106
346056
2849
06:00
I suddenly突然 remembered记得 the solar-powered太阳能 clocks时钟 project项目
107
348905
2809
06:03
from my youth青年.
108
351714
1077
06:04
And I realized实现 this theory理论 also explains说明 why Chris'克里斯' clock时钟
109
352791
2992
06:07
is so much better than mine.
110
355783
1881
06:09
You see, my clock时钟 only focuses重点 on sight视力,
111
357664
3129
06:12
and a little bit of touch触摸.
112
360793
2438
06:17
It's the first clock时钟 ever that uses使用 smell to tell the time.
114
365214
4649
06:21
In fact事实, in terms条款 of the five senses感官,
115
369863
2066
06:23
Chris'克里斯' clock时钟 is a revolution革命.
116
371929
3013
Chris
06:26
And that's what this theory理论 taught me about my field领域.
117
374942
2638
06:29
You see, up till直到 now, us designers设计师,
118
377580
1899
06:31
we've我们已经 mainly主要 focused重点 on making制造 things look very pretty漂亮,
119
379479
3006
06:34
and a little bit of touch触摸,
120
382485
1796
06:36
which哪一个 means手段 we've我们已经 ignored忽视 the other three senses感官.
121
384281
3179
06:39
Chris'克里斯' clock时钟 shows节目 us that even raising提高 just one
122
387460
2470
Chris
06:41
of those other senses感官 can make for a brilliant辉煌 product产品.
123
389930
3400
06:45
So what if we started开始 using运用 the five senses感官 theory理论
124
393330
4031
06:49
in all of our designs设计?
125
397361
1235
06:50
Here's这里的 three quick ideas思路 I came来了 up with.
126
398596
2725
06:53
This is an iron, you know, for your clothes
127
401321
2603
06:55
to which哪一个 I added添加 a spraying mechanism机制,
128
403924
2769
06:58
so you fill up the vial小瓶 with your favorite喜爱 scent香味,
129
406693
2551
07:01
and your clothes衣服 will smell nicer更好,
130
409244
1868
07:03
but hopefully希望 it should also make
131
411112
1281
07:04
the ironing熨烫 experience经验 more enjoyable其乐融融.
132
412393
2323
07:06
We could call this "the perfumatorperfumator."
133
414716
3172
07:09
All right, next
134
417888
1485
07:11
So I brush my teeth twice两次 a day,
135
419373
2043
07:13
and what if we had a toothbrush牙刷
136
421416
2406
07:15
that tastes口味 like candy糖果,
137
423822
