ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alex Edmans - Finance professor, editor
Alex Edmans uses rigorous academic research to influence real-life business practices -- in particular, how companies can pursue purpose as well as profit.

Why you should listen

Alex Edmans is professor of finance at London Business School and managing editor of the Review of Finance, the leading academic finance journal in Europe. He is an expert in corporate governance, executive compensation, corporate social responsibility and behavioral economics.

Edmans has a unique combination of deep academic rigor and practical business experience. He's particularly passionate about translating complex academic research into practical ideas that can then be applied to real-life problems. He has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, at the World Bank Distinguished Speaker Series and in the UK House of Commons. Edmans is heavily involved in the ongoing reform of corporate governance, in particular to ensure that both the diagnosis of problems and suggested solutions are based on rigorous evidence rather than anecdote. He was appointed by the UK government to study the effect of share buybacks on executive pay and investment. Edmans also serves on the Steering Group of The Purposeful Company, which aims to embed purpose into the heart of business, and on Royal London Asset Management's Responsible Investment Advisory Committee.

Edmans has been interviewed by Bloomberg, BBC, CNBC, CNN, ESPN, Fox, ITV, NPR, Reuters, Sky News and Sky Sports, and has written for the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and Harvard Business Review. He runs a blog, Access to Finance, that makes academic research accessible to a general audience, and was appointed Mercers' School Memorial Professor of Business by Gresham College, to give free lectures to the public. Edmans was previously a tenured professor at Wharton, where he won 14 teaching awards in six years. At LBS, he won the Excellence in Teaching award, LBS's highest teaching accolade.

02:15
It's called Bayesian贝叶斯 inference推理.
37
123489
2410
02:18
And the very simple简单 version is this:
38
126251
2936
02:21
We care关心 about "does the data数据
support支持 the theory理论?"
39
129211
3268
02:25
Does the data数据 increase增加 our belief信仰
that the theory理论 is true真正?
40

02:29
But instead代替, we end结束 up asking,
"Is the data数据 consistent一贯 with the theory理论?"
41
137520
4383
02:34
But being存在 consistent一贯 with the theory理论
42
142838
2515
02:37
does not mean that the data数据
supports支持 the theory理论.
43
145377
2929
02:40
Why?
44
148799
1159
02:41
Because of a crucial

02:45
the data数据 could also be consistent一贯

46
153831
3558
02:49
But due应有 to confirmation确认 bias偏压,
we never consider考虑 the rival对手 theories理论,
47

02:58
Now, let's look at this for Belle's贝尔的 story故事.
49
166688
2413
03:01
Well, we care关心 about:
Does Belle's贝尔的 story故事 support支持 the theory理论
50
169125
4214
03:05
that diet饮食 cures治愈 cancer癌症?
51
173363

03:06
But instead代替, we end结束 up asking,
52
174990

“贝尔的故事
等同于饮食治愈癌症吗?”
03:08
"Is Belle's贝尔的 story故事 consistent一贯
with diet饮食 curing养护 cancer癌症?"
53
176801
4045
03:13
And the answer回答 is yes.
54
181790
1604
03:15
If diet饮食 did cure治愈 cancer癌症,
we'd星期三 see stories故事 like Belle's贝尔的.
55
183839
4103
03:20
But even if diet饮食 did not cure治愈 cancer癌症,
56
188839
2849
03:23
we'd星期三 still see stories故事 like Belle's贝尔的.
57

03:26
A single story故事 in which哪一个

58

03:31
just due应有 to being存在 misdiagnosed误诊

3174
03:35
Just like, even if smoking

60

03:39
you'd still see one smoker抽烟者

Just like, even if education

03:56
So the biggest最大 problem问题 with Belle's贝尔的 story故事
is not that it was false.
66
224056
3911
03:59
It's that it's only one story故事.

There might威力 be thousands数千 of other stories故事

04:26
Just like in society社会, you can't just
listen to the one percent百分,
75
254244
2968
04:29
the outliers离群,
76
257236

04:30
and ignore忽视 the 99 percent百分, the ordinary普通.
77
258418
2666
04:34
Because that's the second第二 example
of confirmation确认 bias偏压.
78
262022
3254
04:37
We accept接受 a fact事实 as data数据.
79

04:41
The biggest最大 problem问题 is not

我们生活在后真相世界;
04:45
it's that we live生活 in a post-data数据后 world世界.
81
273030
3769
04:49
We prefer比较喜欢 a single story故事 to tons of data数据.
82
277792
3744
04:54
Now, stories故事 are powerful强大,
they're vivid生动, they bring带来 it to life.
83
282752
3016
04:57
They tell you to start开始

84
285792

05:00
I did.
85
288038
1150
05:01
But a single story故事
is meaningless无意义的 and misleading误导
86
289696

05:06

87
294474
2849
05:11
But even if we had large-scale大规模 data数据,
88

05:13
that might威力 still not be enough足够.
89

2158
05:16
Because it could still be consistent一贯

90
304260
3138
05:20
Let me explain说明.
91
308136
1150
05:22
A classic经典 study研究
05:25
gives you a set of three numbers数字
93
313358
1952
05:27
and asks you to think of the rule规则
that generated产生 them.
94
315334
2905
05:30
So if you're given特定 two, four, six,
95
318585
4476
05:35
what's the rule规则?
96
323085
1150
05:36
Well, most people would think,
it's successive连续 even numbers数字.
97
324895
3219
05:40
How would you test测试 it?
98
328767
1515
05:42
Well, you'd propose提出 other sets
of successive连续 even numbers数字:
99
330306
3262
05:45
4, 6, 8 or 12, 14, 16.
100
333592
3318
05:49
And Peter彼得 would say these sets also work.
101
337546
2800
05:53
But knowing会心 that these sets also work,
102
341124
2564
05:55
knowing会心 that perhaps也许 hundreds数以百计 of sets
of successive连续 even numbers数字 also work,
103
343712
4765
06:00
tells告诉 you nothing.
104
348501
1348
06:02
Because this is still consistent一贯
with rival对手 theories理论.
105
350572
3358
06:06
Perhaps也许 the rule规则
is any three even numbers数字.
106
354889
3205
06:11
Or any three increasing增加 numbers数字.
107
359000
2133
06:14
And that's the third第三 example
of confirmation确认 bias偏压:
108
362365
2888
06:17
accepting验收 data数据 as evidence证据,
109
365277
3689
06:20
even if it's consistent一贯
with rival对手 theories理论.
110
368990
3000
06:24
Data数据 is just a collection采集 of facts事实.
111
372704
2952
06:28
Evidence证据 is data数据 that supports支持
one theory理论 and rules规则 out others其他.
112
376402
4923
06:34
So the best最好 way to support支持 your theory理论
113
382665
2483
06:37
is actually其实 to try to disprove驳斥 it,
to play devil's鬼才 advocate主张.
114
385172
3930
06:41
So test测试 something, like 4, 12, 26.
115
389466
4718
06:46
If you got a yes to that,
that would disprove驳斥 your theory理论
116
394938
3683
06:50
of successive连续 even numbers数字.
117
398645
1936
06:53
Yet然而 this test测试 is powerful强大,
118
401232
2016
06:55
because if you got a no, it would rule规则 out
"any three even numbers数字"
119
403272
4845
07:00
and "any three increasing增加 numbers数字."
120
408141
1712
07:01
It would rule规则 out the rival对手 theories理论,
but not rule规则 out yours你的.
121
409877
3341
07:05
But most people are too afraid害怕
of testing测试 the 4, 12, 26,
122
413968
4794
07:10
because they don't want to get a yes
and prove证明 their pet宠物 theory理论 to be wrong错误.
123
418786
4163
07:16
Confirmation确认 bias偏压 is not only
about failing失败 to search搜索 for new data数据,
124
424727
5676
07:22
but it's also about misinterpreting曲解
data数据 once一旦 you receive接收 it.
125
430427
3073
07:26
And this applies适用 outside the lab实验室
to important重要, real-world真实世界 problems问题.
126
434339
3548
