ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Barry Schwartz - Psychologist
Barry Schwartz studies the link between economics and psychology, offering startling insights into modern life. Lately, working with Ken Sharpe, he's studying wisdom.

Why you should listen

In his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz tackles one of the great mysteries of modern life: Why is it that societies of great abundance — where individuals are offered more freedom and choice (personal, professional, material) than ever before — are now witnessing a near-epidemic of depression? Conventional wisdom tells us that greater choice is for the greater good, but Schwartz argues the opposite: He makes a compelling case that the abundance of choice in today's western world is actually making us miserable.

Infinite choice is paralyzing, Schwartz argues, and exhausting to the human psyche. It leads us to set unreasonably high expectations, question our choices before we even make them and blame our failures entirely on ourselves. His relatable examples, from consumer products (jeans, TVs, salad dressings) to lifestyle choices (where to live, what job to take, who and when to marry), underscore this central point: Too much choice undermines happiness.

Schwartz's previous research has addressed morality, decision-making and the varied inter-relationships between science and society. Before Paradox he published The Costs of Living, which traces the impact of free-market thinking on the explosion of consumerism -- and the effect of the new capitalism on social and cultural institutions that once operated above the market, such as medicine, sports, and the law.

Both books level serious criticism of modern western society, illuminating the under-reported psychological plagues of our time. But they also offer concrete ideas on addressing the problems, from a personal and societal level.

Schwartz is the author of the TED Book, Why We Work

Barry Schwartz: The paradox of choice

07:31
life is a mattermatèria of choiceelecció.
137
426000
3000
la vida és qüestió de triar.
07:34
And the worldmón we used to liveen directe in lookedmirava like this.
138
429000
4000
Abans vivíem en un món així.
07:40
That is to say, there were some choicesopcions,
139
435000
2000
És a dir, hi havia algunes opcions,
07:42
but not everything was a mattermatèria of choiceelecció.
140
437000
2000
però no tot es podia triar.
07:44
And the worldmón we now liveen directe in looksaspecte like this.
141
439000
3000
I ara vivim en un món així.
07:47
And the questionpregunta is, is this good newsnotícies, or baddolent newsnotícies?
142
442000
6000
07:53
And the answerresposta is yes.
143
448000
3000
I la resposta és: sí.
07:56
(LaughterRiure)
144
451000
2000
(Rialles)
07:58
We all know what's good about it,
145
453000
2000
Tots sabem el que té de bo,
08:00
so I'm going to talk about what's baddolent about it.
146
455000
3000
08:03
All of this choiceelecció has two effectsefectes,
147
458000
3000
Tantes opcions tenen dos efectes,
08:06
two negativenegatiu effectsefectes on people.
148
461000
3000
dos efectes negatius sobre les persones.
08:09
One effectefecte, paradoxicallyParadoxalment,
149
464000
2000
Un efecte, paradoxalment,
08:11
is that it producesprodueix paralysisparàlisi, rathermés aviat than liberationalliberament.
150
466000
5000
08:16
With so manymolts optionsopcions to choosetriar from,
151
471000
2000
Amb tantes opcions per triar,
08:18
people find it very difficultdifícil to choosetriar at all.
152
473000
4000
la gent troba molt difícil decidir-se.
08:22
I'll give you one very dramaticDramàtic exampleexemple of this:
153
477000
3000
Us en donaré un exemple molt dramàtic,
08:25
a studyestudiar that was donefet of investmentsinversions in voluntaryvoluntari retirementjubilació plansplans.

08:44

162
511000
4000
que si només n'ofereixes 5. Per què?
09:00
Because with 50 fundsfons to choosetriar from,
163
515000
2000
Perquè si tens 50 fons per triar,
09:02
it's so damnmaleïda harddur to decidedecideixi whichquin fundfons to choosetriar
164
517000
4000

165

que ho acabes deixant per demà.
09:08
And then tomorrowdemà, and then tomorrowdemà,
166
523000
2000
I per demà, i per demà,
09:10
and tomorrowdemà, and tomorrowdemà,
167
525000
2000
i per demà, i per demà,
09:12
and of coursecurs tomorrowdemà never comesve.
168
527000
2000
i naturalment demà no arriba mai.
09:14
UnderstandEntendre that not only does this mean
169
529000
2000
Això no vol dir només
09:16
that people are going to have to eatmenjar doggos foodmenjar when they retirejubilar-se
170
531000

que alguns jubilats menjaran pinso de gos

because they don't have enoughsuficient moneydiners put away,
171
533000
2000
perquè no tindran prou estalvis,
09:20
it alsotambé meanssignifica that makingelaboració the decisiondecisió is so harddur
172
535000
3000
09:23
that they passpassar up significantsignificatiu matchinges posin en venda moneydiners from the employerempresari.
173
538000
4000
09:27
By not participatingparticipant, they are passingpassant up as much as 5,000 dollarsdòlars a yearcurs

175

09:35
So paralysisparàlisi is a consequenceconseqüència of havingtenint too manymolts choicesopcions.
176
550000
4000
09:39
And I think it makesfa the worldmón look like this.
177
554000
2000
09:41
(LaughterRiure)
178
556000
7000
(Rialles)
09:48
You really want to get the decisiondecisió right if it's for all eternityl'eternitat, right?
179
563000
4000
09:52
You don't want to pickcollir the wrongmal mutualmútua fundfons, or even the wrongmal saladamanida dressingvestir-se.
180
567000
3000
No et vulguis equivocar de fons, ni de salsa per a l'amanida.
09:55
So that's one effectefecte. The secondsegon effectefecte is that
181
570000
3000
09:58
even if we managegestionar to overcomesuperar the paralysisparàlisi and make a choiceelecció,
182
573000
5000
10:03
we endfinal up lessmenys satisfiedsatisfet with the resultresultat of the choiceelecció
183

184
582000
3000
que si haguéssim tingut menys opcions.
10:10
And there are severaldiversos reasonsraons for this.
185
585000
3000
Això és per diverses raons.
10:13
One of them is that with a lot of differentdiferent saladamanida dressingsapòsits to choosetriar from,
186
588000
4000
10:17
if you buycomprar one, and it's not perfectperfecte -- and, you know, what saladamanida dressingvestir-se is? --
187
592000

10:20
it's easyfàcil to imagineimaginar that you could have madefet a differentdiferent choiceelecció

10:27
this imaginedimaginat alternativealternativa inducesindueix you to regretlamentar the decisiondecisió you madefet,
190
602000
5000
10:32
and this regretlamentar subtractsresta from the satisfactionsatisfacció you get out of the decisiondecisió you madefet,
191

10:36

192
611000

encara que fos una bona decisió.
10:39
The more optionsopcions there are, the easiermés fàcil it is to regretlamentar anything at all
193
