Why you should listen

Tracy Chevalier pulls stories from paintings and historical episodes, finding the human thread behind opaque images. Her best-known book is Girl With a Pearl Earring, inspired by a Vermeer painting; other books include The Lady and the Unicorn and Burning Brightabout two children who become neighbours of William Blake. Her upcoming book, The Last Runaway, tells a story from the Underground Railroad.

For the anthology Imagined Lives, she wrote about an unknown portrait sitter whom she calls "Rosy." Hear the podcast of her story. and find more stories from the National Portrait Gallery.

Tracy Chevalier: Finding the story inside the painting

Kial do tiu ĉi viro... ruĝiĝas? Jen tri rakontoj inspiritaj de portretoj, inklusive tiun, kiu instigis ŝin verki sian famkonatan romanon, "Junulino kun perla orelringo".

I'm going to tell you about an affliction I suffer from.

Embarasan problemon mi oftege spertas.
00:20
And I have a funny feeling that quite a few of you

Kaj laŭ mi, pluraj el vi
00:23
suffer from it as well.

suferas la saman.

When I'm walking around an art gallery,

Kiam mi vizitas muzeon kaj paŝas
00:27
rooms and rooms full of paintings,
4

ĉambrojn post ĉambroj plenaj je pentraĵoj,
00:29
after about 15 or 20 minutes,

post 15-20 minutoj,
00:33
I realize I'm not thinking about the paintings.

mi ekkonscias, ke mi tute ne pensas pri ili.
00:35
I'm not connecting to them.

Mi ne empatias kun ili.

Instead, I'm thinking about that cup of coffee

Anstataŭ, mi pensas pri tiu kafotaso,
00:39
I desperately need to wake me up.

00:42
I'm suffering from gallery fatigue.
10

3184
Jen mia problemo: muzea laciĝo.
00:45
How many of you out there suffer from --
11
29951
2376
Kiom multe el vi ankaŭ spertas tion...
00:48
yes. Ha ha, ha ha!
12
32327
2005
Jes. Ha-ha! Ha-ha!
00:50
Now, sometimes you might last longer
13

2150
Foje eblas elteni pli longe
00:52
than 20 minutes, or even shorter,
14
36482
2094
ol 20 minutojn, foje malpli,
00:54
but I think we all suffer from it. And do you have
15

2214
sed laŭ mi, ni ĉiuj suferas ĝin. Kaj ĉu vi spertas
00:56
the accompanying guilt?
16
40790
2081
la kunestantan kulpiĝon?
00:58
For me, I look at the paintings on the wall
17
42871
2987
Miakaze, mi rigardas la pentraĵojn sur la muroj
01:01
and I think, somebody has decided to put them there,
18
45858
3015
kaj pensas, ke oni decidis alkroĉi ilin tie,
01:04
thinks they're good enough to be on that wall,
19
48873
2528
juĝante ilin sufiĉe interesaj por resti ĉe tiu muro,
01:07
but I don't always see it.
20
51401
1358
sed mi ne ĉiam vidas kial.
01:08
In fact, most of the time I don't see it.
21
52759
2664
Fakte, plejofte mi tute ne vidas kial.
01:11
And I leave feeling actually unhappy.
22
55423
3774
Kaj fine, mi eliras la ejon malfeliĉa.
01:15
I feel guilty and unhappy with myself,
23
59197
3467
Mi sentas min kulpa kaj malfeliĉa.
01:18
rather than thinking there's something wrong with the painting,
24
62664
2063
Anstataŭ ol pensi, ke io misas pri la pentraĵoj,
01:20
I think there's something wrong with me.
25
64727
1457
mi pensas ke iel mi mem estas misa.
01:22
And that's not a good experience, to leave a gallery like that.
26
66184
2908
Eliri artgalerion en tia animstato ne tre bonas.
01:24
(Laughter)
27
69092
1271
(Ridoj)
01:26
The thing is, I think we should give ourselves a break.
28
70363
2309
Nu, kial do tiom da mem-severeco?
01:28
If you think about going into a restaurant,
29
72672
2460
En restoracio, kiam oni rigardas la menuon,
01:31
when you look at the menu, are you expected to order
30
75132
3687
ĉu oni mendu ĉion ajn,
01:34
every single thing on the menu?
31
78819
2183
kion oni vidas?
01:36
No! You select.
32
81002
1882
Ne! Oni elektas.
01:38
If you go into a department store to buy a shirt,
33
82884
3175
En magazeno, kiam oni celas aĉeti ĉemizon,
01:41
are you going to try on every single shirt
34
86059
2977
ĉu oni provu ĉiun ĉemizon?
01:44
and want every single shirt?
35
89036
1328
Ĉu oni volas ĉiun?
01:46
Of course not, you can be selective. It's expected.
36
90364
4127
Kompreneble ne: oni estu selektema, tutnormale.
01:50
How come, then, it's not so expected
37
94491
2621
Nu, kial oni do devus ne esti elektema
01:53
to be selective when we go to an art gallery?
38
97112
2573
vizitante artgalerion? Kial atendi,
01:55
Why are we supposed to have a connection with every single painting?
39
99685
3295
ke oni sentu empation rilate al ĉiu pentraĵo?
01:58
Well I'm trying to take a different approach.
40
102980
2704
Nu, mi bezonas alian vidmanieron.
02:01
And there's two things I do:
41
105684
1618
Kaji faras du aferojn:
02:03
When I go into a gallery, first of all, I go quite fast,
42
107302
4494
unue, enirinte galerion, mi rapidas
02:07
and I look at everything, and I pinpoint the ones
43
111796
4235
kaj rigardas ĉion, kaj mi memoras la pentraĵojn,
02:11
that make me slow down for some reason or other.
44
116031
3054
kiuj malrapidigis min pro ajna motivo.
02:14
I don't even know why they make me slow down, but something
45
119085
2801
Mi eĉ ne scias, kial ili malrapidigis min, sed io
02:17
pulls me like a magnet
46
121886
2057
altiris min kiel magneto
02:19
and then I ignore all the others, and I just go to that painting.
47
123943
3118
kaj ignorigis ĉiujn aliajn,
do mi iras rekte al tiu pentraĵo.
02:22
So it's the first thing I do is, I do my own curation.
48
127061
2464
Do unue, mi iĝas mia propra muzeestro.
02:25
I choose a painting. It might just be one painting in 50.
49
129525
3296
Mi elektas pentraĵon. Eble unu el 50.
02:28
And then the second thing I do is I stand in front of that painting,
50
132821
3690
Kaj poste, mi staras antaŭ tiu pentraĵo
02:32
and I tell myself a story about it.
51
136511
3077
kaj kreas rakonton pri ĝi.
02:35
Why a story? Well, I think that we are wired,
52
139588
3598
Kial rakonton?
Laŭ mi, rakonti apartenas al nia eco,
02:39
our DNA tells us to tell stories.
53
143186
3891
rakontemo estas kodita en nia DNA.
02:42
We tell stories all the time about everything,
54
147077
2369
Oni estas ĉiam rakontantaj, pri io ajn,
02:45
and I think we do it because the world is kind of a crazy, chaotic place,
55
149446
5111
pro tio ke la mondo estas freneza, ĥaosa ejo.
02:50
and sometimes stories, we're trying to make sense of the world a little bit,
56
154557
3951
Foje per rakontoj oni provas
iomete sencigi la mondon,
02:54
trying to bring some order to it.
57
158508
2169
provas ordigi ĝin iomete.
02:56
Why not apply that to our looking at paintings?
58
160677
3991
Kial ne uzi tiun kapablon kiam oni rigardas pentraĵojn?
03:00
So I now have this sort of restaurant menu
59
164668
3715
Do nun, mi uzas la menuan metodon
03:04
visiting of art galleries.
60
168383
3223
por viziti muzeojn.
03:07
There are three paintings I'm going to show you now
61
171606
3208
Mi volas prezenti al vi tri pentraĵojn,
03:10
that are paintings that made me stop in my tracks
62
174814
3064
kiuj haltigis min dum travojado
03:13
and want to tell stories about them.
63
177878
2546
kaj faris min deziri rakonti pri ili.
03:16
The first one needs little introduction --
64
180424
3551
Ĉu la unua estas prezentenda?
03:19
"Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer,
65
183975
3031
"Junulino kun perla orelringo" fare de Johannes Vermeer,
03:22
17th-century Dutch painter.
66
187006
2156
17-jarcenta nederlanda pentristo.
03:25
This is the most glorious painting.
67
189162
2500
Plej bela pentraĵo.
03:27
I first saw it when I was 19,
68
191662
2144
Mi unuafoje vidis ĝin kiam mi estis 19-jara
03:29
and I immediately went out and got a poster of it,
69
193806
2280
kaj tuj aĉetis afiŝan kopion, kiun mi
03:31
and in fact I still have that poster. 30 years later it's hanging in my house.
70
196086
4157
ankoraŭ havas, post 30 jaroj.
03:36
It's accompanied me everywhere I've gone,
71
200243
3150
Ĝi akompanis min ĉien, kien mi iris;
03:39
I never tire of looking at her.
72
203393
2344
mi neniam tediĝas rigardante ĝin.
03:41
What made me stop in my tracks about her to begin with
73
205737
3779
Ekhaltigis min unuafoje, tutsimple
03:45
was just the gorgeous colors he uses
74
209516
2557
la mirindaj koloroj, kiujn la pentristo uzas,
03:47
and the light falling on her face.
75
212073
1944
kaj la lumo, kiu falas sur ŝia vizaĝo.
03:49
But I think what's kept me still coming back
76
214017
2784
Tamen, mi pensas, ke io alia
03:52
year after year is another thing, and that is
77
216801
3056
revenigis min jaron post jaro, kaj tio estas
03:55
the look on her face, the conflicted look on her face.
78
219857
3694
ŝia mieno, la konflikto legebla sur ŝia vizaĝo.
03:59
I can't tell if she's happy or sad,
79
223551
2418
Mi ne povas decidi ĉu ŝi estas gaja aŭ ne,
04:01
and I change my mind all the time.
80
225969
2967
kaj mia opinio estas ŝanĝanta.
04:04
So that keeps me coming back.
81
228936
3599
Pro tio, mi ĉiam revenas al ĝi.
04:08
One day, 16 years after I had this poster on my wall,
82
232535
4009
Iam, 16 jarojn post kiam mi surmurigis la afiŝon,
04:12
I lay in bed and looked at her,
83
236544
2682
kuŝante sur mia lito, mi rigardis ĝin
04:15
and I suddenly thought, I wonder what
84
239226
2579
kaj subite demandis min: "Kion faris
04:17
the painter did to her to make her look like that.
85
241805
3918
la pentristo, por ke ŝi tiel mienu?"
04:21
And it was the first time I'd ever thought that
86
245723
2944
Unuan fojon mi pensis,
04:24
the expression on her face is actually reflecting
87
248667
2800
ke ŝia mieno rekte respegulas
04:27
how she feels about him.
88
251467
2139
kion ŝi sentas pri li.
04:29
Always before I'd thought of it as a portrait of a girl.
89
253606
3156
Antaŭe, mi ĉiam vidis ĝin kiel portreto de junulino.
04:32
Now I began to think of it as a portrait of a relationship.
90
256762
4769
Ekde tiam, mi vidis ĝin kiel portreto de interrilato.
04:37
And I thought, well, what is that relationship?
91
261531
2832
Kaj la tuja demando estis: kia interrilato?
04:40
So I went to find out. I did some research and discovered,
92
264363
3208
Mi do strebis trovi respondon. Mi faris esploreton
04:43
we have no idea who she is.
93
267571
2325
kaj malkovris, ke oni ne scias kiu ŝi estis.
04:45
In fact, we don't know who any of the models
94
269896
2347
Verdire, oni ne konas iun
04:48
in any of Vermeer's paintings are,
95
272243
2360
el la modeloj de Vermeer,
04:50
and we know very little about Vermeer himself.
96
274603
2127
kaj tre malmulte pri Vermeer mem.
04:52
Which made me go, "Yippee!"
97
276730
2774
Mia reago estis: "Hura! Mi povas fari
04:55
I can do whatever I want, I can come up with whatever story I want to.
98
279504
4659
kion ajn mi volas, eltrovi kian ajn rakonton".
05:00
So here's how I came up with the story.
99
284163
2596
Sekve, jen kiel mi imagis la aferon.
05:02
First of all, I thought,
100
286759
1877
Unue, mi pensis:
05:04
I've got to get her into the house.
101
288636
2092
"Ŝi devas eniri la domon".
05:06
How does Vermeer know her?
102
290728
2488
Kiel Vermeer konatiĝis kun ŝi?
05:09
Well, there've been suggestions that
103
293216
1544
Nu, oni konjektis,
05:10
she is his 12-year-old daughter.
104
294760
4423
ke ŝi estas lia 12-jara filino.
05:15
The daughter at the time was 12 when he painted the painting.
105
299183
2225
Lia filino estis ja 12-jara kiam li faris tiun portreton.
05:17
And I thought, no, it's a very intimate look,
106
301408
2696
Tamen, ŝajnis al mi tre intima rigardo,
05:20
but it's not a look a daughter gives her father.
107
304104
2184
ne rigardo, kiun filino ĵetus al patro.
05:22
For one thing, in Dutch painting of the time,
108
306288
1840
Sciu, ke en la nederlanda pentrarto tiu-epoka,
05:24
if a woman's mouth was open, it was indicating sexual availability.
109
308128
3592
virino malfermanta la buŝon
montras seksan disponeblecon.
05:27
It would have been inappropriate for Vermeer
110
311720
1888
Ne estintus taŭge de Vermeer
05:29
to paint his daughter like that.
111
313608
1896
tiel portreti sian filinon.
05:31
So it's not his daughter, but it's somebody
112
315504
1880
Do: ne lia filino, sed iu tre intima,
05:33
close to him, physically close to him.
113
317384
2250
fizike proksima al li.
05:35
Well, who else would be in the house?
114
319634
2264
Kiu alia loĝis en tiu domo?
05:37
A servant, a lovely servant.
115
321898
3383
Servistino, belega servistino.
05:41
So, she's in the house.
116
325281
1561
Bone, ŝi estas endome.
05:42
How do we get her into the studio?
117
326842
2661
Kiel igi ŝin eniri la atelieron?
05:45
We don't know very much about Vermeer,
118
329503
2134
Malmulton oni konas pri Vermeer,
05:47
but the little bits that we do know, one thing we know
119
331637
2139
sed detalo ja konata de estas, ke li edziniĝis
05:49
is that he married a Catholic woman, they lived with her mother
120
333776
2991
kun katolikulinon, kies patrino loĝis kun la geedzoj,
05:52
in a house where he had his own room
121
336767
2273
en domo kie li havis propran ĉambron
05:54
where he -- his studio. He also had 11 children.
122
339040
4283
– lia ateliero. Ankaŭ, li havis 11 geinfanojn.
05:59
It would have been a chaotic, noisy household.
123
343323
3077
Sendube, la domo estis ĥaosa kaj bruega.
06:02
And if you've seen Vermeer's paintings before,
124
346400
2944
Se vi iam vidis la pentraĵojn de Vermeer antaŭe,
06:05
you know that they're incredibly calm and quiet.
125
349344
3864
vi scias kiel ili ŝajnas trankvilaj kaj kvietaj.
06:09
How does a painter paint such calm, quiet paintings with 11 kids around?
126
353208
3896
Kiel pentristo kreas bildojn tiajn
kun 11 kriaĉantaj geinfanoj?
06:13
Well, he compartmentalizes his life.
127
357104
2296
Nu, li partigis sian vivon.
06:15
He gets to his studio, and he says, "Nobody comes in here.
128
359400
3680
Enirante sian atelieron, li ordonas:
"Neniu eniru ĉi tien.
06:18
Not the wife, not the kids. Okay, the maid can come in and clean."
129
363080
4728
nek la edzino, nek la buboj…
Bone, krom la servistino, kiu venu por ordigi".
06:23
She's in the studio. He's got her in the studio, they're together.
130
367808
7051
Jen ŝi estas en la ateliero. Li sukcesis: kune ili estas.
06:30
And he decides to paint her.
131
374859
2080
Kaj li decidas portreti ŝin.
06:32
He has her wear very plain clothes.
132
376939
2268
Li vestigas ŝin per tre ordinaraj vestaĵoj.
06:35
Now, all of the women, or most of the women in Vermeer's other paintings
133
379207
3371
Ĉiuj virinoj, aŭ preskaŭ, ĉe la pentraĵoj de Vermeer
06:38
wore velvet, silk, fur, very sumptuous materials.
134
382578
5966
surhavas veluron, silkon, peltoj, tre luksajn ŝtofojn.
06:44
This is very plain; the only thing that isn't plain
135
388544
2520
Sed, tiuj ĉi estas tre ordinaraj. La sola neordinaraĵo
06:46
is her pearl earring.
136
391064
2040
estas la perla orelringo.
06:49
Now, if she's a servant, there is no way she could afford
137
393104
3447
Sed servistino neniel povus akiri
06:52
a pair of pearl earrings.
138
396551
2207
paron de perl-ornamaĵoj.
06:54
So those are not her pearl earrings. Whose are they?
139
398758
3262
Ili certe ne apartenas al ŝi. Sed al kiu?
06:57
We happen to know, there's a list of Catharina, the wife's clothes.
140
402020
5041
Bonŝance, estas listo de vestaĵoj
de la edzino Katarina,
07:02
Amongst them a yellow coat with white fur,
141
407061
3616
en kiu troviĝas flava mantelo kun blanka pelto,
07:06
a yellow and black bodice,
142
410677
1747
flava kaj nigra korsaĵo,
07:08
and you see these clothes on lots of other paintings,
143
412424
3694
kaj oni vidas tiujn en pluraj el la aliaj pentraĵoj,
07:12
different women in the paintings, Vermeer's paintings.
144
416118
3114
sur diversaj virinoj en la pentraĵoj fare de Vermeer.
07:15
So clearly, her clothes were lent to various different women.
145
419232
4478
Sendube, ŝiaj vestaĵoj estis pruntedonitaj
al diversaj virinoj.
07:19
It's not such a leap of faith to take
146
423710
2519
Ne estas troigo supozi,
07:22
that that pearl earring actually belongs to his wife.
147
426229
3584
ke tiu perla orelringo fakte apartenas al lia edzino.
07:25
So we've got all the elements for our story.
148
429813
3177
Jen ni havas ĉiujn elementojn de nia rakonto.
07:28
She's in the studio with him for a long time.
149
432990
2430
Ŝi povas resti en la ateliero longtempo.
07:31
These paintings took a long time to make.
150
435420
2043
Oni bezonis ja tempegon por fari pentraĵojn.
07:33
They would have spent the time alone, all that time.
151
437463
2871
Ili restis kune, tute solaj tiun tempon.
07:36
She's wearing his wife's pearl earring.
152
440334
2000
Ŝi surhavas la ornamaĵon de la edzino.
07:38
She's gorgeous. She obviously loves him. She's conflicted.
153
442334
2815
Rava ŝi estas. Klare, ŝi amas lin,
kaj sentas konflikton.
07:41
And does the wife know? Maybe not.
154
445149
2792
Kaj ĉu prikonscias tion la edzino? Eble ne.
07:43
And if she doesn't, well --
155
447941
3378
Kaj se ne, nu…
07:47
that's the story.
156
451319
1855
Ĉi tie finiĝas la rakonto.
07:49
(Laughter)
157
453174
2177
(Ridoj)
07:51
The next painting I'm going to talk about
158
455351
2590
Nun, ni vidu pentraĵon titolitan
07:53
is called "Boy Building a House of Cards" by Chardin.
159
457941
3247
"Knabo konstruanta ludkartdomon" fare de Chardin.
07:57
He's an 18th-century French painter best known for his still lifes,
160
461188
4376
Oni pli bone konas la aĵpentraĵojn
de tiu 18-jarcenta franca pentristo,
08:01
but he did occasionally paint people.
161
465564
2593
sed li kelkfoje portretis.
08:04
And in fact, he painted four versions of this painting,
162
468157
3967
Fakte, li pentris kvar versionojn de tiu ĉi portreto,
08:08
different boys building houses of cards, all concentrated.
163
472124
3960
pri knabo kiu faras kartdomon, tre serioze.
08:11
I like this version the best, because some of the boys
164
476084
3464
Mi preferas tiun ĉi version, ĉar kelkaj knaboj
08:15
are older and some are younger, and to me, this one,
165
479548
3393
estas pli aĝaj, kelkaj, pli junaj, kaj laŭ mi,
08:18
like Goldilocks's porridge, is just right.
166
482941
2952
kiel en la rakonto pri la tri ursoj, la kaĉo ĝuste taŭgas.
08:21
He's not quite a child, and he's not quite a man.
167
485893
3991
Ne ankoraŭ viro. Ne plu vera knabo.
08:25
He's absolutely balanced between innocence and experience,
168
489884
4793
Li situiĝas ekzakte inter senartifikeco kaj sperto,
08:30
and that made me stop in my tracks in front of this painting.
169
494677
4483
kaj tio igis min halti antaŭ tiu ĉi pentraĵo, kaj rigardi
08:35
And I looked at his face. It's like a Vermeer painting a bit.
170
499160
3717
lian vizaĝon. Ĝi estas Vermeer-ecan pentraĵon
08:38
The light comes in from the left, his face is bathed
171
502877
2623
La lumo venas de la maldekstra flanko. Liajn trajtojn
08:41
in this glowing light. It's right in the center of the painting,
172
505500
2224
ĝi delikate prilumas. Li staras ĝuste meze
08:43
and you look at it, and I found that when I was looking at it,
173
507724
3012
de la pentraĵo. Mi rigardis lin, kaj mi malkovris,
08:46
I was standing there going,
174
510736
1207
ke farante tion, mi estis pensanta:
08:47
"Look at me. Please look at me."
175
511943
2953
"Rigardu min, rigardu min, mi petas".
08:50
And he didn't look at me. He was still looking at his cards,
176
514896
2736
Sed li ne movis. Li nur priatentis siajn kartojn,
08:53
and that's one of the seductive elements of this painting is,
177
517632
2752
kaj jen unu el la allogaĵoj de la pentraĵo:
li tiom pensas
08:56
he's so focused on what he's doing that he doesn't look at us.
178
520384
4490
pri sia ludo, ke li ne direktas la rigardon al ni.
09:00
And that is, to me, the sign of a masterpiece,
179
524874
3893
Miavide, tio estas la stampo de majstroverko,
09:04
of a painting when there's a lack of resolution.
180
528767
3977
de pentraĵo, kiam malĉeestas konkludo.
09:08
He's never going to look at me.
181
532744
1521
Li neniam rigardos min.
09:10
So I was thinking of a story where,
182
534265
1679
Do mi pripensis rakonton en kiu, konsiderante
09:11
if I'm in this position, who could be there looking at him?
183
535944
3216
tiun situacion, iu estas tie, rigardante lin.
09:15
Not the painter, I don't want to think about the painter.
184
539160
2202
Ne la pentristo. Mi ne volas pensi pri la pentristo.
09:17
I'm thinking of an older version of himself.
185
541362
2526
Mi pensas pri pliaĝa versio de li mem.
09:19
He's a man, a servant, an older servant looking at this younger servant,
186
543888
5945
Kiam plenkreskulo, pliaĝa servisto,
kiu rigardas tiun junulon,
09:25
saying, "Look at me. I want to warn you about
187
549833
2471
diras: "Rigardu min. Mi volas averti vin
09:28
what you're about to go through. Please look at me."
188
552304
2450
pri kio atendas vin. Rigardu min, mi petas".
09:30
And he never does.
189
554754
1526
Kaj li neniam faras.
09:32
And that lack of resolution, the lack of resolution in "Girl with a Pearl Earring" --
190
556280
3803
Pri tiu malĉeesto de konkludo,
ankaŭ ĉe "Junulino kun perla orelringo",
09:35
we don't know if she's happy or sad.
191
560083
2044
oni ne scias ĉu ŝi estas feliĉa aŭ ne.
09:38
I've written an entire novel about her,
192
562127
1649
Mi verkis tutan romanon pri ŝi,
09:39
and I still don't know if she's happy or sad.
193
563776
2000
kaj ankoraŭ ne scias ĉu ŝi feliĉas aŭ ne.
09:41
Again and again, back to the painting,
194
565776
2104
Mi senĉese revenas al la pentraĵo por havigi al mi
09:43
looking for the answer, looking for the story to fill in that gap.
195
567880
4681
la respondon, la rakonteron, kiu ŝtopos la mankon.
09:48
And we may make a story, and it satisfies us momentarily,
196
572561
3447
Ni ja povas krei rakonton kelkatempe kontentigan,
09:51
but not really, and we come back again and again.
197
576008
5815
sed neniam definitive,
kaj oni revenu ree al la pentraĵo.
09:57
The last painting I'm going to talk about
198
581823
2538
La lasta portreto pri kiu mi parolos
10:00
is called "Anonymous" by anonymous. (Laughter)
199
584361
4864
titoliĝas "Sennomulo", fare de anonimulo. (Ridoj)
10:05
This is a Tudor portrait bought by the National Portrait Gallery.
200
589225
3051
Tiu estas Tudor-familiana portreto
aĉetita de la Nacia Portreta Muzeo.
10:08
They thought it was a man named Sir Thomas Overbury,
201
592276
2613
Oni pensis, ke temas pri Siro Thomas Overbury,
10:10
and then they discovered that it wasn't him,
202
594889
2664
sed oni poste malkovris ke ne, kaj nun
10:13
and they have no idea who it is.
203
597553
1600
oni malscias pri kiu temas.
10:15
Now, in the National Portrait Gallery,
204
599153
2143
Nu, en la Nacia Portreta Muzeo,
10:17
if you don't know the biography of the painting,
205
601296
1769
se oni ne konas la estintecon de pentraĵo,
10:18
it's kind of useless to you.
206
603065
1624
oni konsideras ĝin kiel orfon.
10:20
They can't hang it on the wall, because they don't know who he is.
207
604689
2424
Neeblas alkroĉi ĝin, ĉar oni ne scias pri kiu ĝi temas.
10:23
So unfortunately, this orphan spends most of his time in storage,
208
607113
4904
Do bedaŭrinde, ĝi plejofte restas en la konservejo,
10:27
along with quite a number of other orphans,
209
612017
2144
kun nemalalta nombro de aliaj orfoj,
10:30
some of them some beautiful paintings.
210
614161
2511
foje tre admirindaj.
10:32
This painting made me stop in my tracks for three reasons:
211
616672
5003
Tiu ĉi pentraĵo haltigis min pro tri motivoj:
10:37
One is the disconnection between his mouth
212
621675
2877
unue estas la senrilato inter la buŝo,
10:40
that's smiling and his eyes that are wistful.
213
624552
2705
kiu ridetas, kaj la okuloj, kiuj sopiras.
10:43
He's not happy, and why isn't he happy?
214
627257
3007
Li malĝojas, sed kial?
10:46
The second thing that really attracted me
215
630264
3717
La dua detalo, kiu altiris mian atenton
10:49
were his bright red cheeks.
216
633981
1716
estas liaj skarlataj vangoj.
10:51
He is blushing. He's blushing for his portrait being made!
217
635697
3607
Li ruĝiĝas. Oni portretas li, kaj li ruĝiĝas!
10:55
This must be a guy who blushes all the time.
218
639304
3034
Li probable estas ulo plej ruĝiĝema.
10:58
What is he thinking about that's making him blush?
219
642338
2142
Pri kio li pensas por ruĝiĝi tiel?
11:00
The third thing that made me stop in my tracks
220
644480
3776
La tria detalo, kiu haltigis min
11:04
is his absolutely gorgeous doublet.
221
648256
2800
estas la belega kamizolo.
11:06
Silk, gray, those beautiful buttons.
222
651056
3568
Silka, grizkolora kun belaj butonoj.
11:10
And you know what it makes me think of,
223
654624
1632
Kaj ĉu vi scias pri kio tio pensigas min?
11:12
is it's sort of snug and puffy; it's like a duvet spread over a bed.
224
656256
4792
Tio ŝajnas komforta kaj kvasta,
kiel lanuga super littuko.
11:16
I kept thinking of beds and red cheeks,
225
661048
2656
Mi senĉese pensis pri litoj kaj ruĝaj vangoj,
11:19
and of course I kept thinking of sex when I looked at him,
226
663704
2760
kaj kompreneble pri sekso, kaj mi pensis:
11:22
and I thought, is that what he's thinking about?
227
666464
2608
"Ĉu pri tio li pensas?"
11:24
And I thought, if I'm going to make a story,
228
669072
2272
Kaj mi diris min, se mi faru rakonton,
11:27
what's the last thing I'm going to put in there?
229
671344
1984
kio estu la lasta sceno, kiun mi enmetos en ĝi?
11:29
Well, what would a Tudor gentleman be preoccupied with?
230
673328
3630
Nu, pri kio zorgus Tudor-familia ĝentlemano?
11:32
And I thought, well, Henry VIII, okay.
231
676958
1930
Kaj la respondo estus – nu, Henriko la 8-a, bone.
11:34
He'd be preoccupied with his inheritance, with his heir.
232
678888
4144
Li zorgus pri sia heredaĵo, sia heredonto.
11:38
Who is going to inherit his name and his fortune?
233
683032
3649
Kaj kiu heredos lian nomon kaj riĉaĵojn?
11:42
You put all those together, and you've got your story
234
686681
3880
Kun ĉiuj tiuj elementoj, oni fine konsistigas rakonton,
11:46
to fill in that gap that makes you keep coming back.
235
690561
3354
kiu plenigos la mankon, kaj ĉiam revenigas homojn.
11:49
Now, here's the story.
236
693915
4721
Jen la rakonto.
11:54
It's short.
237
698636
2930
Mallonga.
11:57
"Rosy"
238
701566
2731
"Rozĉjo"
12:00
I am still wearing the white brocade doublet Caroline gave me.
239
704297
4050
Mi ankoraŭ surhavas la luksan blankan kamizolon,
donacitan de Karolina.
12:04
It has a plain high collar, detachable sleeves
240
708347
4311
Ĝi havas altan kolumon, malligeblajn manikojn,
12:08
and intricate buttons of twisted silk thread,
241
712658
3176
kaj komplikajn butonojn el torditaj silkaj fadenoj,
12:11
set close together so that the fit is snug.
242
715834
2926
kudritaj por ke la vestaĵo sidu bonege sur mi.
12:14
The doublet makes me think of a coverlet on the vast bed.
243
718760
3563
Ĝi pensigas min pri litkovrilo sur granda lito.
12:18
Perhaps that was the intention.
244
722323
3750
Eble estas intence. Mi ĝin unuafoje uzis
12:21
I first wore it at an elaborate dinner her parents held in our honor.
245
726073
4918
dum formala tagmanĝo, kiun ŝiaj gepatroj starigis niahonore.
12:26
I knew even before I stood up to speak
246
730991
1826
Mi sentis eĉ antaŭ ol leviĝi por diskuri,
12:28
that my cheeks were inflamed.
247
732817
2569
ke miaj vangoj estas ruĝegaj.
12:31
I have always flushed easily, from physical exertion,
248
735386
3701
Mi ĉiam ruĝiĝas facile, pro fizika strebo,
12:34
from wine, from high emotion.
249
739087
2355
vintrinkado aŭ emociiĝo.
12:37
As a boy, I was teased by my sisters and by schoolboys,
250
741442
4465
Dum mia infanaĝo, moketis min miaj fratinoj kaj kunlernantoj,
12:41
but not by George.
251
745907
2447
sed ne Georgo.
12:44
Only George could call me Rosy.
252
748354
3074
Nur Georgo povis nomi min Rozĉjo.
12:47
I would not allow anyone else.
253
751428
2159
Mi ne permesis al iu alia.
12:49
He managed to make the word tender.
254
753587
4224
Iel, li faris la vorton tenera.
12:53
When I made the announcement, George did not
255
757811
2799
Kiam mi anoncis mian edziĝon, Georgo
12:56
turn rosy, but went pale as my doublet.
256
760610
3064
ne ruĝiĝis, sed iĝis pala kiel mia kamizolo.
12:59
He should not have been surprised.
257
763674
1904
Li ne estus devinta senti surprizon.
13:01
It has been a common assumption
258
765578
1672
Oni ĉiam antaŭvidis,
13:03
that I would one day marry his cousin.
259
767250
3848
ke mi iam edziĝus lian kuzinon.
13:06
But it is difficult to hear the words aloud.
260
771098
2584
Sed malfacilas aŭdi la vortojn.
13:09
I know, I could barely utter them.
261
773682
3301
Mi scias: mi apenaŭ kapablis eldiri ilin.
13:12
Afterwards, I found George on the terrace overlooking the kitchen garden.
262
776983
4402
Poste, mi trovis Georgon sur la teraso
superanta la kuireja ĝardeno.
13:17
Despite drinking steadily all afternoon, he was still pale.
263
781385
5257
Kvankam li drinkis la tutan posttagmezon,
li estis plu pala.
13:22
We stood together and watched the maids cut lettuces.
264
786642
4225
Kune, ni rigardis la servistinojn, kiuj rikoltis laktukojn.
13:26
"What do you think of my doublet?" I asked.
265
790867
2262
"Kion vi pensas pri mia kamizolo?" demandis mi.
13:29
He glanced at me. "That collar looks to be strangling you."
266
793129
5444
Li ekrigardis min. "Ŝajnas kvazaŭ tiu kolumo strangolas vin."
13:34
"We will still see each other," I insisted.
267
798573
2004
"Ni plu vizitos unu la alian", mi insistis.
13:36
"We can still hunt and play cards and attend court.
268
800577
3288
"Ni povos ankoraŭ ĉasi, kartludi kaj kortegumi.
13:39
Nothing need change."
269
803865
1736
"Nenio ŝanĝu."
13:41
George did not speak.
270
805601
3717
Georgo restis silenta.
13:45
"I am 23 years old. It is time for me to marry
271
809318
3394
"23-jara mi estas. Alvenis la tempo por mi edziĝi
13:48
and produce an heir. It is expected of me."
272
812712
4105
